This study proposed a method to evaluate proper experimental conditions of eddy current tests under a low signal-to-noise ratio. This method was applied to quantify the detection reliability of the eddy current test to detect corrosion pits on the surface of austenitic stainless-steel weld cladding from the perspectives of probability of detection and probability of false alarm. The fluctuations of flaw signal and noise were described using truncated bivariate normal distributions of a two-dimensional vector composed of the real and imaginary components of a signal. The probabilities of detection and false alarms were formalized as cumulative distributions of the estimated distributions of the maximum flaw signal and the noise exceeding a decision threshold. The receiver operating characteristic curves were created by coupling the probabilities of detection and false alarms at various thresholds. The area under the curve was used to quantify the detection reliability, simultaneously considering the probabilities of detection and false alarms. The results obtained in this study support the applicability of this method in quantitatively evaluating the detection reliability of a non-destructive inspection under a low signal-to-noise ratio.

In this study, a multivariable probability of detection (POD) model is developed to quantify the detection capability of a low frequency electromagnetic (LFEM) testing method with permanently installed sensors to monitor the thinning of pipe walls. Numerical simulations are utilized to predict the signal response by modeling LFEM testing against local wall thinning with different profiles. By probabilistically calibrating the simulated signal response with a limited number of experimental samples, signal response distributions due to various flaw profiles are inferred. Subsequently, a model is developed using Monte Carlo simulation to determine the distribution of the signal response affected by sensor placement and to calculate the POD. The resultant POD contours reflect the effect of multiple flaw parameters and sensor placement on the detection capability of the LFEM testing method.

This study explores the applicability of microwave nondestructive testing to detect a metal pipe’s inner crack. Three-dimensional finite element simulations were conducted to study the inspectability of cracks using microwaves in different modes and the dependency of the reflection characteristics of microwaves on crack size. The simulation results showed that microwaves in the TM01 and TE01 modes can detect circumferential and axial cracks, respectively. The positive relationship between crack size and intensity corresponding to the reflected microwaves was obtained in simulations and then verified by experiments. In both simulations and experiments, the axial crack length showed a small influence on the results, especially for shallow crack detection. In the experiments, circumferential and axial cracks with a width of 0.3 mm were detected using microwaves. The experimental results revealed that signal amplitudes decreased when a slit penetrated a pipe wall, probably due to a microwave leakage.

In this study, a simulation-assisted probability of detection (POD) analysis that considers multiple flaw parameters and signal features is presented, including an evaluation of its applicability to eddy current testing for weld inspection. In the proposed method, both the real and imaginary parts of eddy current signals were considered, unlike conventional methods that only consider signal amplitude. Type 304 stainless steel plates were joined by butt welding, and slits were fabricated on the weld path. The eddy current inspection was conducted using a uniform eddy current probe. Numerical simulations were also performed using the finite element method, with the model imitating the experimental situation. The POD contours were calculated using the proposed method, and they exhibited a reasonable tendency. In addition, the 95% lower confidence intervals of the proposed and conventional PODs were compared and were almost equal with respect to the decision threshold, indicating the applicability of the proposed method.

It is still a big challenge to calculate the probability of defect detection for inspecting pits on austenitic stainless steel welding using traditional POD models. Because we determine the decision threshold, the POD curve has a lot of changes as the decision threshold changes, there is no clear reason to insist which threshold is reasonable. This study proposes a new probability of detection (POD) model to quantitatively assess the detection capability of eddy current probes for inspecting pits on austenitic stainless steel welding. The experimental results show that the proposed model is more reasonable than traditional ones. The novel POD model was employed to analyze three eddy current probes, uniform, TR, plus-point probes on austenitic stainless steel welding. The results reveal that the uniform eddy current probe has the best detection capability for inspecting pits on among the three probes.

Structural health monitoring (SHM) is a promising method for maintaining the integrity of structures. A reasonable approach is necessary to quantify its detection uncertainty by taking into account the effect of random sensor locations on inspection signals. Recent studies of the authors proposed a model that adopts Monte Carlo simulation to numerically obtain the distribution of inspection signals influenced by random sensor locations. This model can evaluate the effect not only of multiple defect dimensions but also of the placement of sensors on the detection uncertainty. However, its effectiveness has only been confirmed using pseudo-experimental signals generated by artificial pollution. This study aims to examine the effectiveness of the proposed model in quantifying the detection uncertainty of SHM methods using the experimental signals of low frequency electromagnetic monitoring for inspecting wall thinning in pipes. The results confirm the capability of the proposed model to correctly characterize the distribution of inspection signals affected by random sensor locations and to determine the reasonable probability of detection.

In this study, a TE01 mode converter was developed to locate an axial crack on the inner surface of a metal pipe. Three-dimensional finite element simulation was conducted to evaluate the effect of inserted coaxial cables on the transmission characteristic of the mode converter. The result showed that the energy of TE mode microwaves leaned to transmit to one side when the cables penetrated with inclination. To demonstrate the effectiveness of the mode converter, experimental verification was conducted. The mode converter was fabricated based on the simulation result. Microwaves were emitted through the pipe wall of the converter to propagate on both sides (‘right side’ and ‘left side’) of a pipe with an artificial slit. Compared with the signals from each side, the reflection from the slit on the right side was more significant than that on the left side. This result is consistent with the numerical simulation result.

This study proposes a probability of detection (POD) model to quantitatively evaluate the capability of eddy current testing to detect flaws on the inner surface of pressure vessels cladded by stainless steel and in the presence of high noise level. Welded plate samples with drill holes were prepared to simulate corrosion that typically appears on the inner surface of large-scale pressure vessels. The signals generated by the drill holes and the noise caused by the weld were examined using eddy current testing. A hit/miss-based POD model with multiple flaw parameters and multiple signal features was proposed to analyze the measured signals. It is shown that the proposed model is able to more reasonably characterize the detectability of eddy current signals compared to conventional models that consider a single signal feature.

This study evaluated the effect of pipe diameter on the applicability of a technique using TE11 mode microwaves for in-pipe crack detection. Three TE11 mode converters of different inner diameters were designed based on theoretical calculations and verified via numerical simulations. The working bandwidths of these mode converters were 7.0, 4.0, and 1.9 GHz. Experimental verification was carried out using brass pipes with the corresponding three inner diameters, and with pipe lengths up to 21–25.5 m. An axial and a circumferential slit were introduced to simulate cracks and deployed at multiple positions along the pipes under test. The results showed that both axial and circumferential slits could be detected and located for an inner pipe diameter up to 39 mm and at a distance of 15 m–24 m.

This study investigated the effect of a bend on microwave NDT (non-destructive testing) applied for rapid pipe inspections. The factors affecting the mode conversion of microwaves due to a bend were deducted theoretically and verified through numerical simulation. Both theoretical and numerical results revealed that the mode conversion at a bend was actually determined by the frequency normalized by the cut-off frequency of an arbitrary mode (f/fc), the ratio of the curvature radius to the inner diameter of the pipe (r/D) and the bend angle (α). Subsequent experimental evaluations were performed using four groups of pipes with different inner diameters and five different bends. The effect of a bend was quantitatively evaluated by comparing the reflection signals from pipe wall thinning in a straight pipe with those in a bent pipe. The results showed that the presence of a bend led to a decrease in the reflection signal behind the bend, and the extent of decrease also depended on r/D and α of the bend. Furthermore, the length or the depth of the pipe wall thinning did not noticeably affect the decrease in reflection signal, when the bend’s dimensions were certain.

This study proposes a probability of detection (POD) model for the probabilistic analysis of the detectability of electromagnetic acoustic resonance (EMAR) method for the detection and evaluation of pipe wall thinning. Forty-one carbon steel plate samples with an artificially corroded groove were prepared to simulate pipe wall thinning caused by flow-assisted corrosion. Experiments were performed to gather EMAR signals from the samples, and subsequently the depths of the grooves were evaluated based on the fundamental frequency of the measured signals. The results of the experiments showed that the error in evaluating the depth of a groove tended to increase with the depth. The results also confirmed that the surface roughness of the groove would contribute to the error, and the thickness of a plate without corrosion can be quite accurately evaluated. Analysing the measured EMAR signals using the proposed POD model, which takes these characteristics into consideration, and a conventional one confirmed that the proposed model can more reasonably evaluate the probability of detection against small wall thinning, as well as the false-positive rate.

A mechanical lap joint fabricated with high-temperature superconducting (HTS) tapes is proposed for the application to joint-winding in HTS magnets for fusion reactors. The applicability of the joint has been validated, however, it could not be guaranteed because the joint resistance is unpredictable before the entire conductor is cooled and energized. Identifying the factors that affect the joint resistance is necessary to develop a method to predict this parameter at room temperature. In this report, we evaluated the correlation between the electrical resistance of contact interfaces (contact resistance) and the contact area observed using X-ray computer tomography scan (observed contact area), and discussed appropriate techniques for this prediction. A total of 40 mechanical lap joint samples were prepared. The observed contact areas were segmented from cross-sectional images of contact interfaces using a graph cut image segmentation, while the contact resistances were calculated from measured joint resistances. The correlation indicated that the prediction of contact resistance is more precise when base on the observed contact area compared to the conventional method using the nominal contact area. However, some of dispersive contact resistivity still remained due to inhomogeneous distribution of fine-structure on contact interface.

This study proposed a long-range non-destructive pipe inspection approach using linearly-polarized circular TE11 mode microwaves, enabling rapid detection of both axial and circumferential cracks on the inner surface of a metallic pipe. The applicability of the TE11 mode microwaves for crack detection was discussed in the light of the currents induced on the inner surface of a pipe due to the propagation of the TE11 mode microwaves. A dual-bend structured mode converter was designed to propagate linearly-polarized TE11 mode microwaves inside a pipe with a certain inner diameter, based on the theoretical and numerical analysis of mode conversion due to a bend. A 3.5 GHz working bandwidth of the mode converter was achieved with a conversion efficiency of the TE11 mode of over 90%. Experimental verification was conducted using stainless-steel pipes with an inner diameter of 23 mm and a total length of 7 m. An axial and a circumferential slit were introduced to simulate cracks. The experimental results confirmed reflections from both the axial and circumferential slits, indicating that the TE11 mode microwaves are applicable to crack detection. The results also confirmed the correlation between TE11 mode polarization and its detection sensitivity toward slits with different orientations along the circumferential direction. Furthermore, the axial and circumferential slits situated at different longitudinal and circumferential locations in the pipe were successfully detected by orthogonally deploying the mode converter to change the polarization of the TE11 mode by 90°.

<p>This study proposes long-range nondestructive inspection of the inner surface of a pipe without open end using microwave emitted by a probe attached to the pipe wall. Three-dimensional finite element simulations were conducted to evaluate how to propagate microwave effectively inside a pipe having an inner diameter of 19 mm. The simulations considered a coaxial cable penetrating the pipe wall to emit microwave inside the pipe. Experimental verifications were then carried out using a brass pipe with a total length of 4.5 m and a probe fabricated on the basis of the results of the numerical simulations. The experiment confirmed clear reflections due to artificial wall thinning 1 m away from the probe situated approximately at the center of the pipe. The experiment also revealed that directivity of the microwave depended on the frequency, which agrees with the results of the numerical simulations.</p>

This study demonstrates that an artificial flaw that has an arbitrary boundary profile and the response to non-destructive testing similar to a natural crack can be fabricated by bonding surfaces with artificial grooves using diffusion bonding. Artificial flaws with a small openings and widely spread boundary profiles inside can be realized by bonding Type 316L stainless steel blocks with artificial grooves. The artificial flaw is designed so that its surfaces have a 20% physical contact. The conditions for bonding are based on the results of preliminary experiments. Validations are carried out using two electromagnetic non-destructive testing methods: direct current potential drop and eddy current tests, whose results are well reproduced by finite element simulations. Subsequent destructive testing confirms that the actual profile of the artificial flaw agrees well with the designed one.

This paper experimentally demonstrates that controlling AC distribution inside conductive material enables one to perform volumetric examination using electromagnetic phenomena. Several current distributions are superposed to locally realize AC distribution having a phase difference of 180 degrees between currents flowing near the surface and those deeply inside, and having non-exponential decay in depth direction. Experimental results clearly show that measuring the phase of magnetic field outside the material as a function of the ratio of the superposition provides information about the depth of defects quantitatively. In addition, this approach is applicable even though the depth of defects is much deeper than the standard depth of penetration; experimental results show clear differences between signals due to near-side notches 10, 12, 15, and 20 mm deep, when an exciting frequency of 100 kHz is adopted.

This paper evaluates the applicability of the extremely low frequency eddy current testing to the monitoring of wall thinning appearing on the inner surface of pipes. Magneto-Impedance sensor arrays are used to detect signals due to wall thinning. Plates made of SS400 with artificial grooves are prepared to simulate wall thinning in a large diameter pipe. We carry out numerical simulations and experiments to evaluate the effect of the depth and width of the grooves on signal. The results show the maximum amplitude and the full width at half maximum of signals correspond approximately to the depth and width of the grooves, respectively.

This study evaluates nuclear characteristics of molten salt, namely LiF-NaF-BeF_2 (FLiNaBe), from the viewpoint of its application to a liquid blanket system in a fusion reactor. Monte Carlo numerical simulations using MVP-2.0 with JENDL-4.0 data library and time-dependent nuclear transmutation analysis are carried out to evaluate tritium breeding ratio, change in the compositions of the molten salt. Induced radioactivity of Na contained in FLiNaBe is also evaluated. The results of the numerical analysis reveal that the thermophysical properties of FLiNaBe should vary because the compositions of the molten salt definitely change due to the fusion plasma neutron during power plant operation.

This study develops a methodology to apply a microwave nondestructive inspection technique, which detects and evaluates flaws appearing inner wall of a pipe from the reflection and transmission of microwave propagating inside the pipe, to a pipe with an arbitrary diameter. Three-dimensional finite element simulations are carried out to evaluate the effect of the profile of a microwave probe on the reflection and transmission of the microwave. The results reveal that elliptic microwave probe, which is newly developed in this study, realizes small reflection at the probe as well as single-mode propagation inside the pipe. Experimental validations using a straight pipe with an inner diameter of 39 mm and length of 2 m confirm that the elliptic microwave probe provides much clearer signals due to a wall thinning than conventional one.

This study reports a method to fabricate imitative stress corrosion cracking suitable for the development of nondestructive testing and evaluation methods. The method is to embed a partially-bonded region, which simulates the characteristics of stress corrosion cracking, inside a material by bonding together surfaces having artificial grooves. Since the sizes of the grooves are smaller than the spatial resolution of nondestructive testing method applied, the material property realized can be regarded as uniform as the actual stress corrosion cracking. The grooves are introduced using mechanical machining, which enables one to control the characteristics of the simulated flaw. Four specimens made of type 316L austenitic stainless steel are fabricated. The method is demonstrated by visual and eddy current examinations.

This study proposes a signal processing method that significantly enhances the nondestructive evaluation of flaws appearing inside pipe wall from the reflection of microwaves propagating inside the pipe. The signal processing method modifies the phase of incident microwave as a function of frequency so that the reflection due to an anomaly at a certain distance is observed as a pulse. Validations are carried out both by experiments and finite element simulations using a straight brass pipe with a outer diameter of 25mm and a wall thickness of 3mm. This study considered wall thinning artificially introduced into the inner surface of the pipe. The results of the validations demonstrate the effectiveness of the signal processing method even when wall thinning have a complicated boundary profile.

In the present work, relationship between probability of piping failure and loss of function in the system, and risk by piping failure are evaluated for the system of plural pipes in nuclear power plants. Appling these risk-informed, the calculation model and the code to minimize amount of total piping weight (piping cost) is developed by performing suitable thickness distribution of every piping under the condition of equivalent or lower than the present risk. Validity and applicability of the code are investigated.

In order to develop a high strength W coating with oxidation resistance by passive film formation, we tried to form a strengthen W composite coating by friction stir processing (FSP). The result indicated that Cr can be mixed into the surface of VPS-W by filling the grooves or surface cracks of VPS-W coating with Cr carbide powder. In the exploration of W alloy film formation by 3D printing technology, W film formation by the Selective Laser Melting method (SLM method) was attempted, but it was confirmed that it was difficult to suppress the interfacial reaction in the first layer. Thus, we tried W lamination with suppressed oxidation by plasma spraying as a pretreatment, and obtained promising results of W lamination with suppressed oxidation by using Cu as a bond layer and Ar/H2 gas as the plasma gas.

We have proposed a completely new concept of a fusion reactor that combines ultra-high-energy 14 MeV neutrons generated by fusion reactions with high-level waste (fission products and minor actinides) contained in spent nuclear fuel produced by nuclear power plants. We have performed designing of the minor actinide fuel and transmutation system, and also the blanket including the fission products transmutation system. We have indicated successful scenarios that it is possible to surely reduce the domestic storage amount of these high-level wastes by introducing the innovative fusion reactors to Japan.

This study attempted the application of remote field eddy current technique to the evaluation of two-phase flows from outside the pipe, especially for the purpose of confirming presence of coolants in the case of a loss of coolant accident. Detailed three-dimensional finite element simulations and experiments revealed, however, high frequency excitation necessary to distinguish water and air makes it difficult to realize remote field phenomena in case of pipes carrying the fluids are made from metals. Furthermore, even the pipes are made from composite materials whose electrical conductivity is much smaller than that of the metals, it was difficult to obtain tomographic images of the two-phase flows with a high spatial and time resolutions as originally expected.

We established a method to predict the jointing resistance of the REBCO tapes under cryogenic temperature, strong magnetic field environment and improved heat transfer correlation for pool boiling in the metal porous media indispensable for the cooling performance prediction. In addition, we introduced joint piece and low temperature heat-treatment into the bridge-type mechanical lap joint of the 10kA conductor to succeed realizing 1/3 jointing resistance with 1/6 fabrication time. Furthermore, we performed a pinning center introduction based on a critical state model and a self-magnetic field evaluation by using proton beam irradiation to show controllability of a critical current density, which indicates the possibility of the function-divided conductor based on the superconductivity physics. According to the above results, the demountable high Tc superconducting magnet for an innovative nuclear fusion reactor is demonstrated together with the general jointing method for the magnets.

This study aimed at the development of a nondestructive testing method using microwave for the long-range inspection of corrosions under insulations. Three-dimensional finite element simulations were conducted, whose results revealed that situating coaxial cables carrying TEM microwave circumferentially with an equal distance enables to convert TEM microwave propagating inside the coaxial cables into another TEM microwave propagating inside insulators. Subsequent experimental verifications were performed using a eight-way power divider and double pipes with artificial grooves simulating a corrosion under insulation. The experiment confirmed a clear signals due to the artificial grooves, and the time-of-flight of the signals agreed well with the actual location of the artificial grooves.

This study attempted to develop a method to obtain the tomographic image of electromagnetic properties inside living body non-invasively using time-dependent electromagnetic fields. Three-dimensional finite element simulations were carried out to discuss the suitable structure and arrangement of transmitters and receivers. Subsequent experimental verification were conducted using a dedicated measurement system equipped with arrayed magneto-Impedance element sensors and automated PC-controlled rotational stage. Cylindrical phantoms were prepared for the experimental verification. The results of the experimental verification qualitatively agreed with the ones obtained by the three-dimensional finite element simulations.

We conducted this research aiming for realization of universal joint techniques to be applied to a remountable high-temperature superconducting magnet. We set three objectives in this research: 1) Establishment of universal joint techniques, 2) Optimization of cooling system using porous media and 3) Design and fabrication of a large-scale conductor and its joint. In the research of the cooling system, we confirmed that metal porous media can suppress film boiling and the fact implies that the system is suitable for the remountable magnet. In addition, we fabricated a large-scale conductor having mechanical joint section and achieved a current of 100 kA. Based on the above results, we demonstrated the concept of joint techniques and a remountable high-temperature superconducting magnet.

This study developed a method to significantly enhance the information contained in signals of non-destructive methods using time-dependent electromagnetic fields. Numerical simulations and experimental verifications were carried out to fully reveal the physical background of the method applied to kHz electromagnetic fields. They also evaluated the applicable limit of the method, and confirmed that the magnetic property of the target would enable to make probes smaller. Studies for the application to GHz electromagnetic fields demonstrated that controlling electromagnetic fields leads to a significant improvement of signal-to-noise ratio.
