    The Heian eruption (Eruptive episode A) is the latest activity of Towada Volcano, Northeast Japan that occurred in the 10^<th> century A.D. The activity comprised both magmatic and phreatomagmatic eruptions, that produced deposits of corresponding faces. It is proved that the Heian eruption started with a magmatic eruption and was followed by a phreatomagmatic eruption, then the magmatic-phreatomagmatic cycle repeated once, and finalized by effusion of a large pyroclastic flow. This eruption sequence is constructed on the basis of our new recognition of the second phreatomagmatic deposits in the proximal area (OYU-4), and correlation of the proximal base surge deposits (OYU-S) with the distal phreatomagmatic deposits (OYU-2). The Towada caldera including the vent of the Heian eruption (Nakanoumi caldera) is known to be abundant water in the Heian Period. The Heian eruption indicates that the magmatic eruption does occur in the existence of abundant water in the early stage of eruption and it migrates into the phreatomagmatic explosion as time passes. This eruption sequence provides evidence that the silicic magma does not necessarily cause phreatomagmatic eruption even in the presence of enough water.

    Geological, petrographical and geochemical characteristics of the Baidrag granite pluton from the Tsagaan Tsahir Uul area can be summarized as following; The granitic complex is composed of two types of granites, distinguished by its biotite content. The modal abundance of biotite varies gradually between the two rock types. Major and trace element geochemical characteristics of the granitic rocks are similar, but they differ by SiO_2 content. FeO, CaO, Sr, and Ba contents of the biotite granite are slightly higher than those of the two mica granite. Both granites are medium to high potassium calc alkaline, and have peraluminous chemical features. Studied mineralogical composition and major and trace element geochemistry show that the granitic rock of Tsagaan Tsahir Uul area has volcanic arc granite (VAG) characteristics.

    Mineralogical analysis methods were applied for textures of stone property. Identification of the rock used in cultural properties and decipherment of the rock texture were carried out in this study. Research subjects are cultural property materials composed of andesite and siliceous rocks. Mineral and rock texture were observed by Raman spectroscopy, cathodoluminescence method, and optical microscopy, and chemical analyses carried out by an electron microprobe analyzer. Electron back-scattered diffraction analysis also used to identify the crystallographic direction of minerals. We tried to identify the mineralogical features of the stone and to identify the place of origin of the stone using these texture analysis

    We researched about precipitation processes of low-crystallinity minerals, which have crystal structure with numerous defects, from low temperature solution on the basis of observations for their textures and occurrence. The low-crystallinity mineral, which precipitates under metastable condition or out of stable region, are major in mineral species on the earth, and contribute to the diversity of minerals. It is considered that origins of the metastable phase were effects of impurity and interface energy. We will propose a new model for nucleation process of low-crystallinity minerals.

    Along the coastal areas in Miyagi Prefecture, the Great East Japan Earthquake produced countless disaster heritage. We performed a field survey and documents investigation on them to clarify the significance in science or in the disaster reduction. These results will be used for the education of disaster reduction for a child and the citizen. To achieve this goal, we need the text book for the science communicator or geoguide to explain the significance of the disaster heritage. We chose 243 learning point (mainly disaster heritage) by the field and literature investigation. Also we made an explanation story for the education tour around those areas. The results were summarized in one guide book and three leaflets.

    In order to evaluate the frequency of small-scale eruption in a volcano, the purpose of this study is to establish a method for detecting the tracks indicating the eruptive episode in volcanic soils. It is proved that the existence of a clay mineral implies thesmall-scale eruptive event, but it is difficult to reconstruct the volcanic activity for a very small content of this clay mineral. On the other hand, radiocarbon age obtained from the sample of age known was good agreement with the old document. This result indicates that it is possible to decide the precise age by this 14C wiggle-matching method.

    This project researches for Tumen river area which China, the Democratic Peoples Republic of Korea (DPRK), and Russia, mainly focuses on its natural and social change which is caused by development in past several years. In the term of project, we carried out field work on Yanbian Korean nationality autonomous prefecture in China and other related areas. Recently economic development of Tumen river area is carried on by cooperation of China, DPRK and Russia, but does not progress very much, because of delays of development in DPRK and Russia, and some accidental occurrence factors such as expansion of SARS. In such situation, An ecological environment of Tumen river is kept well generally, except for midstream which is affected slightly by Musan, a mining industry city of DPRK. Many Korean lives in Yanbian as one of the national minority which is recognized by government of China. Under the progress of development that was brought by socialism market economy and the interchange with the Republic of Korea, their ethnic identity comes cultural influence of Han Chinese and Korean both sides.

    本年度の調査では以下について調査・研究を行った。 火山地域に分布する火山灰土壌の起源について検討するため,母材の第1候補である火山噴火によってもたらされた一次テフラについて記載を行い,それぞれの噴出物の特徴をおさえ,その結果をふまえて火山灰-火山灰間に挟まれる土壌層の構成物との比較・検討を行った。具体的な調査地域は霧島火山群と中国東北部・白頭山(中国名:長白山)であり,前者は鬼界アカホヤ火山灰(6.3Ka)以降,後者では10世紀噴火以降に形成された土壌層を対象とした。両地域とも土壌層の総層厚は火山から離れるに従い減少することから,黄砂に代表されるような大陸起源の風成塵のみで説明することは困難である。土壌の構成物を詳しく検討すると以前の噴火による一次テフラと同種の鉱物で大部分が構成されており,土壌層の生成に一次テフラ(再堆積を含む)が大きな役割を果たしていることが示唆される。一次テフラの直上の土壌層中では,テフラ層から離れるに従いテフラ構成物の量は減少することから,基本的には噴火直後には再堆積が活発に行われることで母材が供給されたと考えられる。一方,一次テフラ間の火山灰土壌層中で一次テフラと比して粘土の含有量が高くなる層準が認められる場合がある。これは,顕著な堆積物としては認識できないが,一次テフラの場合と同様に噴火直後の再堆積により濃集したためと考えられ,噴火の存在を間接的に示すといえる。従って以上のように露頭鉛直方向でのテフラ,及び土壌層の構成物量変化を検討することでテフラ噴出物として認識できない過去の小規模噴火の発生履歴をみいだすことができると考えられる。

    Baitoushan volcano, situated on the border between China and North Korea, is one of the most active volcanos in the world, and is known by the 10^<th> century big eruption. Our research intends to clarify the details of this 10^<th> century eruption and its historic effects on the surrounding area. For this purpose, we have investigated geological and petrological features of the volcanic products by the field survey on the Chinese area. In addition to this approach, we made the reexamination of the historic documents existing in Korea, China and Japan. The following things have been newly found by this research. (1)The 10^<th> century eruption consists of two eruptive phases with minor dormancy, and the two times of huge ignimbrite eruption have occurred at the very short period. (2)The 9^<th> century eruption, which wasn't known so far, was found. It has possibility that this new eruption has affected the extinction of Bo-Hai dynasty. (3)The 10^<th> century eruption age is around AD 938, based on the chronological study and literature research. (4)The distribution map indicating the "Abolishment of Township" is good agreement with the area of 10^<th> century eruption ejecta. It is considered that this implies the disaster area induced by this big eruption.

    This research work intends to establish the scaling rule that relates the explosion energy and depth of volcanic explosion to the extension and strength of volcanic disaster such as volcanic blast wave, pyroclastic surge and ballistic fragment. For this purpose, we made some field explosion experiments under both of the conditions on the dry ground and in water. These two years we have concentrated on the underwater experiment for getting the understanding of submarine eruption. The main points of observation accompanied to the experiments are as follows : 1.Observation of underwater pressure waves using blast-sensor and underwater microphone 2.Observation of shock wave in the air using blast sensor and high-speed video recorder 3.Observations of water-dome and ballistic fragment usnig visible and infra-red video recorders 4.Simultaneous recording of eqrthquake, air wave and visible image of the explosion The weigh of explosives used (Kiri-dynamite) were ranged from 250g to 4000g, adn the scaled depth ranged from 0 to 2.15 m/g^1/3. Based on these experiments, weconvinced that the scaling rule for underwater volcanic eruption could be also establishd as in the case on dry ground.

    Main purpose of this project is to make a system for volcanic blast wave measurement both in the air and in the water, and to determine the explosion energy and depth of explosive eruption. The ability of the system is as follows : 1. Sampling rate : 〜200 kHz 2. Number of data collection : ca. 10000 For making the system, field explosion experiment was needed. Using this chance, we have attempeted to establish the scaling rule which govern the relations among explosion energy, explosion depth and surface phenomenon of volcanic explosion such as the crater formation and ejection of ballistic fragment. On 31 March 2000, Usu volcano in Hokkaido, Japan, erupted after 22 years dormancy, and it was characterized by numerous numbers of small-scale phreatic explosion. We have attacked to determine the energy and the depth of Usu eruption based on the observations and the scaling rule. These results indicated that the experimental eqtuations obtained in the field experiment relating the explosion energy and depth to the explosion phenomenon explained well quantitatively the real phenomenon at Usu phreatic explosion. The representative explosion energy observed ranged from 10^10 J to l0^12 J, and the representative depth ranged from almost crater surface to about 30 m deep.

    天然に産する火成岩の風化・変質について,その進行段階に応じた変化について,構成物の変化や組織の変化を記述することで検討を行う。手法としては偏光顕微鏡,及び電子顕微鏡観察,X線回折,EPMAが挙げられる。
