Abstract Sensors for detecting chloride ions have been required for routine monitoring of industry and human health. This study proposes a concept of an ion sensor based on CuO x nanofilms with different oxygen contents. The CuO x -based sensors exhibited an increase in DC current for those with low oxygen content and a decrease for those with high oxygen content following exposure to a chloride ion solution. AC impedance analysis suggested differential reactions of chloride ions in the bulk and surface regions of CuO x , dependent on the oxygen content. For the CuO x -based sensors with a ratio of 0.78 oxygen to copper atoms at chloride ion concentrations of 10−1000 ppm, the sensitivity in the bulk region calculated from AC impedance was 61−2926, which was higher than the sensitivity of 1.3−2.6 calculated from DC impedance. Finally, CuO x -based sensors demonstrated identifiability for chloride ions compared to sodium and calcium ions.

    More details Close

Thermoplastic carbon fiber-reinforced plastics (CFRPs) are increasingly utilized in the aerospace industry owing to their beneficial properties and enhanced formability relative to thermoset CFRPs. Despite the extensive use of these materials, studies focusing on compression after impact (CAI) tests with impact energies exceeding 20 J for thermoplastic CFRPs remain scarce. This study examines CAI tests on quasi-isotropic laminates of thermoplastic CFRP, subjected to a low-velocity impact energy of 27.04 J. For comparison, quasi-isotropic laminates of thermoset CFRP were subjected to a low-velocity impact energy of 36.5 J. These tests reveal that the CAI strength of both materials is comparable, notwithstanding the lower fiber volume fraction in the thermoplastic CFRP. Further, this research incorporates a finite element (FE) analysis to investigate the damage mechanisms in thermoplastic CFRP. The FE model, integrating interlaminar damage observed during the impact tests, accurately predicted the relationship between compressive stress and strain, correlating closely with the experimental outcomes. It was observed that both interlaminar and intralaminar damage propagation were constrained until the point of maximum compressive stress. Prior to reaching this maximum, a region of elevated compressive stress in the fiber direction was noted in the 0° layer near the non-impacted side. These findings indicate that the compressive stress in the fiber direction in the 0° layer adjacent to the non-impacted side is pivotal in dictating the final failure, which determines the CAI strength of thermoplastic CFRP laminates.

A bending test scheme for accurately determining the structural elasticity of human nails is reported. The structural elasticity expresses the deformability of a multilayered material for bending, and it is the flexural rigidity without depending on the external dimensions. The human nail samples used in this study were prepared from the free ends of the nails and are, therefore, curved, so the equation to determine the structural elasticity was derived from elastic, curved beam theory. The structural elasticity of the nail samples determined by the bending tests was found to be 2.19 GPa, and this value decreased by about 50% when nail polish was put on the nails. Lower value of the Young's modulus of the nail polish was found to cause decrease in the structural elasticity of the sample. Moreover, we also measured the structural elasticity of samples of hair prepared from the same person by the bending tests. Surprisingly, the structural elasticity of the hair (4.37 GPa) was found to be twice that of the nails.

To effectively use micro or nano materials and create advanced materials systems from them, welding techniques for such small scale materials are vital. For this purpose, the tips of two thin wires were welded together with Joule heat and the conditions required to achieve it was discovered experimentally. In this paper, the Joule heat welding of thin wires to thin films deposited on substrates is described. To derive the conditions required to achieve this, a heat conduction model for a cylindrical element in the film located at the contact between the wire and the film is considered and the critical thickness of the film above which the welding conditions are independent of film thickness is derived analytically. The validity of the heat conduction model was experimentally verified by welding 0.8 μm diameter Pt wires onto thin Pt films on electrically-insulated substrates. The experiments are performed for various combinations of the length of the wire and the thickness of the films. The current required for welding the wires onto the films having the thickness over the critical thickness are investigated and the conditions required for the welding are found to be coincident with those for welding the tips of two wires with Joule heat.

This paper describes a technique for measuring the thickness of both side coatings on steel plates. The technique utilizes the acoustic resonance phenomena which occurs at the top and back surfaces of the plate. The values of thickness of both surfaces are determined from both surface echoes or only the rear surface echo. Focused and non-focused ultrasonic transducers were employed in this study and the effect of acoustic focusing on the accuracy of thickness measurement was investigated. The thickness of both side coatings was between 10 and 30 μm, and the corresponding resonant frequency was between 20 and 90MHz. The values of thickness at both surfaces of the plate, evaluated by both types of ultrasonic transducers, were in good agreement with those observed directly by the microscope after the ultrasonic measurement. The experimental facts suggested that acoustic focusing did not affect the accuracy of thickness measurement. Focused ultrasonic transducer demonstrated the local measurement of the coating thickness and the evaluated area was estimated to be 45 μm. On the other hand, simultaneous measurement of the thickness of both side coatings was possible with the non-focused ultrasonic transducer.

Wide range compact sensor is preferably sought for force sensing in testing of micro objects or local area of macro objects with the observation of high resolution microscope. This paper presents the design and development of an integrated passive cantilever type force sensing unit with the specificities of range variation, interchangeability of components and compact size by incorporating with cantilever, probe and a capacitive sensor for measurement of large range micro-newton forces in wide scope of application. In the design, the tactile force at the probe perpendicularly attached to the cantilever is converted as cantilever deflection, which is measured by the capacitive sensor. In connection to a tiny capacitive sensor a compatible cantilever with double-beam structure is considered. Cantilever length variation facility is incorporated in the unit for obtaining different force measurement ranges by using the same cantilever. Characterization of the cantilever is performed against a standard load cell. The force resolution with a typical cantilever is estimated as 10 nN. The elastic property of human hair is efficiently determined by testing with the combination of a digital microscope and the developed sensor system. The utility of the unit for different resolution/range by the interchangeability of cantilevers is also demonstrated. Experimental results show that this integrated force sensing unit achieves good sensitivity and linearity, and wide measurement range.

This paper describes a way to select a solid layer for performing the high-resolution acoustic imaging of electronic materials under the dry environment. A dry acoustic microscopy performs the transduction of broadband, high-frequency ultrasound via a solid layer inserted between water and a sample. Firstly, the acoustic impedance matching between water, the layer and the sample is considered, and an equation for predicting the frequency response of inserted layer is shown. The transmission of broadband ultrasound into an acrylic resin sample is performed with the layers made of two polymers and two elastomers and without the layer, and the efficiency of dry ultrasonic transmission is determined. Based on the theoretical consideration and the experimental results, a solid layer for clearly visualizing the defects in electronic materials by means of the present dry manner is discussed. Furthermore, we demonstrate the acoustic imaging of an encapsulated package and a Si/Si bonding sample via the selected layers. The present acoustic microscope promises the realization of high-resolution acoustic imaging of the delamination of the encapsulated package and the nanometer gaps in the Si/Si bonding sample without having to immerse the samples in water.

The surface SH waves technique has been used to evaluate the fatigue cracks at the surface of mild steel specimens. By adjusting incident angle of SH wave transducer, surface SH waves passing through the surface region of materials are received. In this study, the diffraction of surface SH waves received by double-probe technique was used. Firstly, the specimens introduced surface slit were inspected. With the results that the amplitude decreased and the propagation time increased with the slit depth. Secondly, the shapes of the fatigue cracks, which initiated at a small drill hole by rotating-bending fatigue, were evaluated with the difference between the propagation time of the inspected plate with crack. Obtained results showed that the evaluated values of crack length and crack depth were good agreement with the measured values. Furthermore, this technique was applied to evaluating the crack growth behavior.

Hard shot-peening (HSP) treatment was very successful for the improvement of the high cycle fatigue strength of SUS 316 L steel. However, the surface roughness by the HSP treatment was one of the dropping factors on the fatigue strength. In order to separate surface roughness effects from effects of compressive residual stress and strain hardening by the HSP treatment, the HSP-treated SUS 316 L was annealed in the vacuum to remove residual stress and recrystallization in hardened layer. The rotating bending fatigue tests for the annealed specimen were carried out under water cooling condition. The fatigue limit of annealed SUS 316 L was about 60 MPa lower than that of non-peened specimen which was about 200 MPa. To simulate the actual surface roughness, fatigue tests for the single notch specimens and small drilled holes specimens were carried out. As a result, the surface roughness effects by the HSP treatment were not consistent with the √(area) parameter model. The effects were explained by considering the stress concentration factor.

Defects in products and the physical properties of materials can be visualized or evaluated by ultrasound. This is because ultrasound is reflected at the discontinuity and the sound velocity is related with elasticity of materials. First, this article shows that very thin defects can be visualized by ultrasound. Dry-contact ultrasonic technique, which visualizes the internal structure in a sample without getting the sample wet, is introduced. Moreover, changes in the physical properties of a polymer film due to the thermal degradation can also be detected by ultrasound.

This paper reviews the transmission of high frequency broadband ultrasound via a thin layer in contact with a solid. A large part of this article deals with the physics of the acoustic resonance in a material system comprising water, a thin layer and a solid. Generally, it is very difficult to maintain the continuity between the layer and the solid during transmission of the ultrasound. The dry-contact ultrasonic technique, where the air at the layer/solid interface has been evacuated, enables the transmission of high frequency broadband ultrasound via the interface and allows us to realize acoustic imaging without the sample getting wet. In this case, to realize high-resolution acoustic imaging of a solid sample, selection of the layer to be inserted is important, and the acoustic resonance phenomenon is used for this purpose. The dry-contact and conventional ultrasonic techniques and their respective inspection capabilities are compared in this article. Moreover, the acoustic resonance phenomenon is used to characterize layered media. The acoustic properties of a thin polymer film, i.e., the acoustic impedance, ultrasonic velocity and density, can be accurately determined, and any scattering sources, e.g., voids, etc., can be detected with high sensitivity using this technique. The thicknesses of coatings on both surfaces of a steel plate can also be precisely measured by observing the acoustic resonance phenomenon occurring in the ultrasonic transmission system.

The quality of the bi-metal interface of a plate-type thermoelectric generator has been improved, and the effective thermoelectric conversion was realized by stacking them. The low-dimensional metallic materials, such as thin wire and thin plates, were joined together by Joule heating, and the quality of the joining interface was evaluated by the techniques with the current or the sound. Oxidizing the bi-metal interface of the plate-type generator was found to be effective to enhance its performance, and the maximum power was estimated theoretically. A theoretical model to predict the performance of the stacked-type thermoelectric generator, which was composed by stacking multiple plate-type generators, has been proposed, and the validity of the model was verified. The maximum power was estimated to be 50uW at the small temperature difference of 40K when 100 plate-type generators were stacked with the Ag past. This is the useful knowledge for the practical use.

With utilizing the frequency dependence of the reflection coefficient of sound reflected at a thin layer, a technique to accurately determine the acoustic impedance of the outer environment contacted with the layer has been proposed. Furthermore, it has been verified that the changes in the temperature or the pressure of the outer environment such as the liquid or gas are sensitively detected by the proposed technique. The reflection plate having thin layer for observing the acoustic resonance phenomenon at the plate/outer environment interface was fabricated, and the frequency characteristics of the echo reflected at the plate/outer environment interface were confirmed to be sensitively changed depending on the temperature of the outer environment. The pressure of gas was also considered to be sensitively monitored by the proposed technique. Finally, a sensor for sensitively monitoring the outer environment was fabricated, and its usefulness was confirmed.

Suppression and utilization of electromigration (EM), which is a phenomenon of atomic diffusion due to electron flow in high density, and utilization of stress migration (SM) caused by a gradient of hydrostatic stress were studied by considering the effect of passivation on these migration phenomena. Regarding the suppression, EM damages of void and hillock in passivated metallic thin-film lines and solder balls covered with underfill material were treated. Here, the threshold current density, which is the critical value of current density for the initiation of damages, was characterized based on the distribution of atomic density in a material covered with passivation. Regarding the utilization, on the other hand, fabrication of metallic micro materials based on EM or SM with the controlled use of passivation was demonstrated.
