Abstract The electron antineutrino flux limits are presented for the brightest gamma-ray burst (GRB) of all time, GRB221009A, over a range of 1.8–200 MeV using the Kamioka Liquid Scintillator Antineutrino Detector. Using multiple time windows ranging from minutes to days surrounding the event to search for electron antineutrinos coincident with the GRB, we set an upper limit on the flux under the assumption of several power-law neutrino source spectra, with power-law indices ranging from 1.5 to 3 in steps of 0.5. No excess was observed in any time windows ranging from seconds to days around the event trigger time T 0. For a power-law index of 2 and a time window of T 0  ±  500 s, a flux upper limit of 2.34  ×  109 cm−2 was calculated. The limits are compared to the results presented by IceCube.

Abstract Preceding a core-collapse supernova (CCSN), various processes produce an increasing amount of neutrinos of all flavors characterized by mounting energies from the interior of massive stars. Among them, the electron antineutrinos are potentially detectable by terrestrial neutrino experiments such as KamLAND and Super-Kamiokande (SK) via inverse beta decay interactions. Once these pre-supernova (pre-SN) neutrinos are observed, an early warning of the upcoming CCSN can be provided. In light of this, KamLAND and SK, both located in the Kamioka mine in Japan, have been monitoring pre-SN neutrinos since 2015 and 2021, respectively. Recently, we performed a joint study between KamLAND and SK on pre-SN neutrino detection. A pre-SN alert system combining the KamLAND detector and the SK detector was developed and put into operation, which can provide a supernova alert to the astrophysics community. Fully leveraging the complementary properties of these two detectors, the combined alert is expected to resolve a pre-SN neutrino signal from a 15 M star within 510 pc of the Earth at a significance level corresponding to a false alarm rate of no more than 1 per century. For a Betelgeuse-like model with optimistic parameters, it can provide early warnings up to 12 hr in advance.

Abstract We have established a method to measure picograms-per-gram (pg g−1) levels of 238U and 232Th in scintillation films by combining the dry ashing method and inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. Trace amounts of 238U and 232Th were measured in up to 2 g of scintillation film with almost 100% collection efficiency. This paper details the experimental procedure, including the pretreatment of the samples and labware, detection limit of the method, collection efficiencies of 238U and 232Th, and measurement of 238U and 232Th in a polyethylene naphthalate film. This method is also applicable to 238U and 232Th measurements in other low-background organic materials for rare-event search experiments.

Abstract A new ultra-low background high-purity germanium (HPGe) detector has been installed at the Kamioka underground experimental site. The background count rate in the energy range from 40 keV to 2700 keV is about 25% lower than that of the first HPGe detector installed in 2016, which has the same detector specification and similar shielding geometry. This paper describes the shielding configuration, including the cleaning of the material surface, the comparison of calibration data and simulation, the time variation of the background spectra, the sample measurement procedure, and some results of the radioactivity in the selected samples.

Abstract NEWAGE is a direction-sensitive dark matter search experiment with a 3D tracking detector based on a gaseous micro time projection chamber. A direction-sensitive dark matter search was carried out at Kamioka Observatory with a total live time of 318.0 days resulting in an exposure of 3.18 kg·days. A new gamma-ray rejection and a head–tail determination analysis were implemented for this work. No significant non-isotropic signal from the directional analysis was found and a 90% confidence level upper limit on a spin-dependent weakly interactive massive particle (WIMP)–proton cross section of 25.7 pb for a WIMP mass of 150 GeV/c2 was derived. This analysis marks the most stringent upper limit in the direction-sensitive dark matter searches.

We evaluate the impact of radioactive impurities in $\rm Gd_2(\rm SO_4)_3\cdot \rm 8H_2O$ on diffuse supernova neutrino background searches and solar neutrino observation and confirm the need to reduce radioactive and fluorescent impurities by about three orders of magnitude from commercially available high-purity $\rm Gd_2(\rm SO_4)_3\cdot \rm 8H_2O$. In order to produce ultra-high-purity $\rm Gd_2(\rm SO_4)_3\cdot \rm 8H_2O$, we have developed a method to remove impurities from gadolinium oxide, Gd2O3, consisting of acid dissolution, solvent extraction, and pH control processes, followed by a high-purity sulfation process. All of the produced ultra-high-purity $\rm Gd_2(\rm SO_4)_3\cdot \rm 8H_2O$ is assayed by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry and high-purity germanium detectors to evaluate its quality. Because of the long measurement time of high-purity germanium detectors, we have employed several underground laboratories for making parallel measurements including the Laboratorio Subterráneo de Canfranc in Spain, Boulby in the UK, and Kamioka in Japan. In the first half of production, the measured batch purities were found to be consistent with the specifications. However, in the latter half, the $\rm Gd_2(\rm SO_4)_3\cdot \rm 8H_2O$ contained one order of magnitude more 228Ra than the budgeted mean contamination. This was correlated with the corresponding characteristics of the raw material Gd2O3, in which an intrinsically large contamination was present. Based on their modest impact on SK physics, they were nevertheless introduced into the detector. To reduce 228Ra for the next stage of gadolinium loading to SK, a new process has been successfully established.

Abstract The decay of the primordial isotopes 238U, 235U, 232Th, and 40K has contributed to the terrestrial heat budget throughout the Earth's history. Hence, the individual abundance of those isotopes are key parameters in reconstructing contemporary Earth models. The geoneutrinos produced by the radioactive decays of uranium and thorium have been observed with the Kamioka Liquid‐Scintillator Antineutrino Detector (KamLAND). Those measurements have been improved with more than 18‐year observation time, and improvement in detector background levels mainly with an 8‐year nearly reactor‐free period, which now permit spectroscopy with geoneutrinos. Our results yield the first constraint on both uranium and thorium heat contributions. The KamLAND result is consistent with geochemical estimations based on elemental abundances of chondritic meteorites and mantle peridotites. The High‐Q model is disfavored at 99.76% C.L. and a fully radiogenic model is excluded at 5.2σ assuming a homogeneous heat producing element distribution in the mantle.

Abstract We present the results of a search for core-collapse supernova neutrinos, using long-term KamLAND data from 2002 March 9 to 2020 April 25. We focus on the electron antineutrinos emitted from supernovae in the energy range of 1.8–111 MeV. Supernovae will make a neutrino event cluster with the duration of ∼10 s in the KamLAND data. We find no neutrino clusters and give the upper limit on the supernova rate to be 0.15 yr−1 with a 90% confidence level. The detectable range, which corresponds to a >95% detection probability, is 40–59 kpc and 65–81 kpc for core-collapse supernovae and failed core-collapse supernovae, respectively. This paper proposes to convert the supernova rate obtained by the neutrino observation to the Galactic star formation rate. Assuming a modified Salpeter-type initial mass function, the upper limit on the Galactic star formation rate is <(17.5–22.7) M yr−1 with a 90% confidence level.

Anomalies became clear as neutrino oscillations have been measured deeply. Sterile neutrino was introduced to solve the anomalies and some experiments were proposed to look for the sterile neutrinos. One of the strategies to solve the anomaly is to measure ultra-short base line neutrino oscillations; a neutrino source is installed right next to a neutrino detector. KamLAND is a low background neutrino detector that has an excellent achievement to measure the reactor neutrino oscillations and that solved the solar neutrino puzzle. A possibility to install the neutrino source in the KamLAND site was discussed and developed in this research.

I have searched for the neutron-less quadruple beta decay of 136Xe in XMASS. The neutrino-less quadruple decay violates the lepton number, and the process can undergo even in the case that neutrino is a Dirac particle.XMASS is an 832 kg liquid xenon detector. Thanks to its low background event rate, and its capability of beta/gamma events separation, this neutrino-less quadruple beta decay search was conducted with high sensitivity. No significant excess from the known background was observed and the first experimental constraint of the half-life of this decay mode was set. I reported this result at the JPS conference. The paper related to this research is under preparation. XMASS also has 124Xe isotopes that can undergo neutrino-less quadruple electron capture. To search for this process, I generated signal and background simulation data. This background simulation data can be used for other physics targets, such as dark matter searches using the whole XMASS data set.

In order to address to one of the biggest mysteries in the universe, the dark matter, this research project has challenged two tasks: dark matter search with a large-scale experimental apparatus, and development and research of a next-generation dark matter search apparatus. As for the first subject, in this study, we searched for the seasonal modulation signal by dark matter, which the previous research (DAMA / LIBRA) claims, and denied the result. In addition, we searched for dark matter candidates called Bosonic-Super WIMPs, and for the first time published the conclusion that "the vector type cannot be the main component of dark matter". For the second issue, we developed and improved ultra-low background technology.

Creation of matter dominated universe requires violation of lepton number conservation. The violation can be verified by the observation of neutrinoless double beta decay (0nDBD). Our aim is to observe 48Ca 0nDBD with the world best sensitivity by CANDLES system for which we improved performance of the system and developed methods for the enrichment of 48Ca. We installed light pipe, cancellation coil of earth magnetic field and temperature control system which increase light output and lead to improvement of energy resolution. Construction of passive shield leads to reduction of backgrounds by two-orders-of magnitudes. We confirmed that our revised CANDLES III system has sensitivity better than of current limit for 48Ca 0nDBD. We then started long term measurement. We developed enrichment methods by crown-ether resin. A new promising method based on electrophoresis (MCCCE method) was also developed.

In this research, we developed a low energy neutron source for dark matter search. From Yttrium (Y88) and Beryllium9 (BeO ceramic), we can obtain almost monochromatic 152 keV neutron via photo-nuclear reaction. Obtained energy spectrum from this calibration source is similar to the few keV nuclear recoils expected from low-mass weakly interacting massive particles. <BR> We developed this source and collected neutrons with helium 3 neutron counter and with XMASS-I experiment detector, which is a dark matter search experiment. Due to insufficient data taking time, it is hard to evaluate the scintillation efficiency and the scintillation decay time constant of this low energy neutron nuclear recoil, which was set for the purpose of this research. However, it was achieved to observe nuclear recoil-like signal from this calibration source.
