    本研究では、「古代寺領荘園の中世的展開」を具体的に考えるため、法隆寺・弘福寺・東大寺の古代荘園から適切な事例を選び、原史料と現地に即した検討を進めることとしている。今年度の研究においては、当初計画をやや変更した部分もあったが、以下のような研究実績を得ることができた。 (1)東寺文書（東寺文書・東寺百合文書・教王護国寺文書）を博捜し、東寺末寺となった弘福寺の古代荘園に関する史料を集成した。すでに目録と仮釈文は完成しており、弘福寺領荘園を考えるための基礎作業を終えた。 (2)個別荘園の研究として、法隆寺領播磨国鵤荘と東大寺領美濃国大井荘について、これまでの調査・研究を再検討し、荘園故地を踏査することにより、古代荘園としての実態を把握した。前者については、弥生時代に始まる水田地帯が5世紀にミヤケとされ、7世紀に法隆寺に施入されて古代荘園となり、ほぼそのままの領域が11世紀中葉に中世荘園に転成したこと、古代には田租・出挙を中心とした経営が行なわれたらしいことなどを解明した。後者については、墾田主体の荘園が古代から中世へ連続する様相をよく示し、その間に荘域が約2倍に拡大したことを、新発見の文書を吟味しつつ現地に即して論じることができた。このほか興福寺領古代荘園にも中世に連続する様相を見出し、その予備的考察を行なった。 (3)教王護国寺文書のうち、5279カットのデジタル撮影を行なった。その結果、文書群全体の8割強がデジタル画像としてデータ化された。このデータは本研究で活用できただけでなく、近い将来におけるネット公開に向けて大きな蓄積となった。

    本研究課題は、平成30年度から助成を受けた基盤研究(C)「日本古代の畿内・近国における牧の総合的研究」において明らかにした「生産牧」「備蓄牧」に「中継牧」「名目牧」と類別する牧を加え、古代の牧の実態および存在意義についてより複合的に解明せんとするものである。その１年目にあたる令和4年度は「中継牧」に重点を置き、古代官道と馬の利用についての知見を得ることから研究に着手した。 研究会において、研究協力者の山中章氏より、発掘調査などによる考古学分野からの鈴鹿関・不破関の復元的研究についての発表をして頂き、軍事施設である関に伴う馬の飼育空間について意見交換し、成果をメンバーで共有した。その情報共有を踏まえて、古代山陽道の駅家である草上駅・邑智駅(兵庫県姫路市)、布勢駅(たつの市)、高田駅(上郡町)、安芸駅(広島県府中町)の各推定地を巡見し、鈴鹿関・不破関の復元案と、各駅家との立地・地形を比較検討した。 併せて、天皇の御馬を放牧したことが文献から知られる播磨国家島牧(兵庫県姫路市家島)も巡見した。既に知られるように、家島には古墳や製塩遺跡、延喜式内社があり、歴史的にも重要な意味を持つことが推量される。60疋の御馬を平安京から山陽道を通って家島へと歩かせる行列を道中で見せ、京へ向かう海上通行者に対して畿内へ入る手前で天皇の御牧を見せつけることは、天皇による示威行為に他ならない。家島は備蓄牧に類別できるが、牧には示威という機能も加味して考えることが重要との認識を得た。

    (1)中世前期貴族社会における病気と治療という研究を継続し、収集した諸史料の分析および英訳を行って、医師のいわゆる「医学」的な活動のみならず、呪術的・儀礼的な側面を中心に分析した論文を完成させ、初めて英語圏の研究者に紹介した。古記録や『医心方』にみえる反支という禁忌や借地文という呪符を中心に執筆を行ったが、医師の呪術的・儀礼的な活動を論じる余地があるため、さらなる論文を予定している。 (2)呪術の研究の一部である『延喜式』巻三十七「典薬寮」の英訳作業を進め、「医学」的な研究の史料としてのみならず、日本古代における王権関係の儀式を知るため、本式の重要性について報告し、それに基づいて論文を執筆している。海外の研究では日本の典型的な儀式として取り扱われるのが仏教系や神祇関係の儀式であるが、『延喜式』では王権関係の儀式が多く記録されており、「典薬式」にもそういった儀式がみられる。植物や調合薬の記述やリストが多いにも関わらず、例えば第一条「元日御薬」を通じて、日本古代の文化や社会の独特な知識体系を垣間見ることができる。つまり、「典薬式」を素材に、当時の儀礼史や文化史の一端を論じることが可能で、儀式の性格および役割や、「医学」と「宗教」といった近代概念の前近代歴史研究への適用を再検討するきっかけにもなり得ると思われる。 (3)歌人として知られる藤原定家の日記である『明月記』を中心に、中世前期における天文異変に変遷した地震について史料を収集、分析した。仏教書の『大智度論』や中国の天文書に基づいて、地震と月を結びつける言説がすでに『御堂関白記』にみられるが、鎌倉時代初期に定着していく。定家は天文に興味を持ち、地震も詳細に記録した。ところが、彼の天文関係の情報源は陰陽師のみならず、『明月記』の記事のもとに、自分の従者にも天体観察を行わせていたことなどがわかった。

    本研究は、東アジア食文化で重要な位置を占め、農書など歴史史料に記載が多いアブラナ科作物を研究材料とする。アブラナ科作物は世界各地で栽培され、東アジアの米主食文化圏では中心的副食で、近年ではこれらの品種の保存を通じ、遺伝的多様性の重要度への認識が高まっている。 本研究では、公刊の歴史史料や地方文書等から、品種・栽培技術・栽培環境に関する情報を収集し、過去の品種の形態的特徴や栽培方法を人文学的側面から把握すること、現品種にどの形質が受け継がれ、どの形質が選抜の過程で失われたかという問題や、現存品種間の交雑、遺伝解析、各作物が持つゲノムが環境、肥培管理から受ける要因を、比較ゲノム等の手法により、農学的・植物学的な理解を行い、最終的に文理融合による解釈から、アブラナ科作物品種の歴史的変化を踏まえた将来の農資源の在り方、多様性を理解することを目的としている。 2021年度は、国内外での調査や研究会合を計画していたが、折からの新型コロナ蔓延という社会情勢のために、そのほとんどが実施できなかった。ただし、研究班内での研究交流については、オンライン方式によって何とか複数回開催をするにとどまった。 他方で、文系側研究者らは、日本史史料に見える記事の収集作業を実施し、データ整理も併せて行い、さらに近世京都の史料については、史料の釈読や校注作業も実施した。また、理系側研究者らは、農学分野での論文発表、アウトリーチ活動を適宜開催するなどの活動を展開し、コロナ蔓延下の状況でできる範囲での活動を実施した。

    In our research, we sought to discover what ancient pastures were like around the capital, where a large number of horses were needed. Based on our fieldwork, we identified the location of pastures in the Kinki area and elucidated what they had looked like, analyzed historical materials, and sought to uncover their historical value. For comparative purposes, we visited and compared the presumed locations of pastures in the Azuma and south Kyushu areas. We noted that people had raised a large number of horses in the pastures of the Kinki area, which functioned as small stockpile pastures, playing a role as a control valve of the supply and demand of horses. We also noted that the system involving large pastures for production in remote areas and small pastures for stockpiles in the Kinki area had been adapted not only for public pastures, but also for private ones, and was already established in the eighth century at the latest.

    In this research, we conducted comparative historical research on the walled cities and Buddist stupas built in the eastern Eurasia in the 5-13th centuries, and also studied the method of creating a 3D archive. Since the situation of the spread of the new coronavirus occurred around the middle of the research period, and it became difficult to conduct the field survey in Japan and overseas as originally planned, we decided to conduct basic research on the relationship between the walled cities and Buddist stupas, and selected the historical development of Heijo-kyo and Nagaoka-kyo in Japan in the 8th century, and the development of the city castle system and the acceptance of Buddhism in the 10th century in the Kitan (Liao) period in East Asia. Eventually, as research results in these fields, we compiled a compilation and translation of basic historical materials and a report on the method of creating a three-dimensional archive.

    1) Uploaded and made accessible historical documents held by royal and noble archives: approximately 660,000 to the homepage of the University of Tokyo Historiographical Institute and 8,000 to the homepage of Youmei Bunko. 2) Collected roughly 50,000 images of Higashiyama Obunko documents and 40,000 images of Imperial Household Agency Archives-held Nakai Lineage documents.     It is commonly accepted that Japanese society evolved to the level of a centralized state by the seventh century. In terms of material culture, the earliest Buddhist temple was erected in 596 in the Nara basin where the central polity was located. The erection of Buddhist temple became the symbol of authority, replacing keyhol-shaped mounded tombs. In the southern Hitachi region of eastern Japan, however, our study has made it clear that the construction of keyhole-shaped mounded tombs continued in the early seventh century. Moreover, two early-7th century keyhole-shaped mounded tombs, excavated during this research project, were very distinctive from each other, although they are located in close neighborhood. One was enclosed by two moats, and the other was enclosed by a platform and a single moat. This strongly suggests that local elites remained somewhat autonomous. If this is indeed the case, the central polity in the seventh century in Japan was not fully centralized.

    Introducing a new concept of “the Buddhist capital area”, we tried to elucidate the historical characteristics of the capital area in ancient Japan by studying the social and cultural roles of Buddhist temples. “The Buddhist capital area” had three types of typical temples; (1)temples located in mountains around the capital, (2)temples linked to the powers, and (3)temples deeply involved in traffic and transportation. Through interdisciplinary research on many cases, “the Buddhist capital area” has been proven along with diversity of consisting areas. However, we could not find the same kind of “the Buddhist capital” in ancient China or Korea, which highlights the uniqueness of ancient Japanese society.

    On the East Asia, where there is rice food culture, cruciferous crops, Chinese cabbage, turnip, etc., were differentiated into a lot of cultivars, and were cultivated as leaf and root vegetables as well as oil materials. In order to understand the distribution and cultivation of cruciferous crops, interdisciplinary research based on the historical resources and plant genetics and breeding was performed. The researchers on agricultural sciences, humanities, and social sciences collaboratively surveyed about cultivation, food culture, utility, and related techniques of cruciferous plants. Furthermore, we discussed the relationship between cruciferous crops and human society from a view points of culture history and genetics.Our results from this research will be published as a general book in future.

    We digitally photographed one million documents held by royal and noble archives manuscript collections such as the Higashiyama Obunko, Yomei Bunko, and the Imperial Household Agency Library’s Kujou House and Fushimi no Miya House lineages and made them available for viewing at the University of Tokyo Historiographical Institute Library. By elucidating the transmission processes of the Royal Collection derived from the Takamatsu no Miya House lineageand the Imperial Household Agency Gosho Collection, we carried out reconstructive research on the divided Yanagihara House lineage manuscript collection.We introduced and provided transcriptions of roughly 30 hitherto unknown documents and fair copies held by royal and noble archives by way of Research on Royal and Noble Archives, vol. 5-6 and JSPS Research Bulletins.We published “On Archives”, a survey of the field of Japanese Library Catalog Studies and also “Court Culture via the Konoe House Treasures,”a record of public lectures.

    Regarding Todaiji, an important temple, there are many unknown points in the situation of the Nara and Heian period. "Todaiji Yoroku" is the most basic historical material to know the real image of Todaiji temple in this era. In this project, we reexamined the "Todaiji Yoroku Conference" from the current research level and tried to compile the research from various interdisciplinary fields and draw a new Todaiji temple history. We held "Todaiji Yoroku Conference " 16 times (report number 87) and supplementary research group 40 times, and write the contents of the research presentation as a paper, and publish it as a total of three books "Todaiji new research" I made a plan. Two of them have been published as "Todaiji Temple Art and Archaea", "Todaiji Temple in History" (Hozokan). We will also make diligent efforts to publish the remaining volume.

    Our research focus sort to explore the development of functions within the ancient Buddhist temple sites of Japan, especially that of their ceremonial and management facilities. Within the Japanese archipelago, we investigated the excavation results of more than twenty temple sites in the Kinki region. With a combination of archaeological and historical documentary research, each site was studied to reconstruct the ceremonial and management activities of the temples. We then further compared the excavation results of temple sites from the regions of Tohoku, Chubu and Chugoku. After this, we conducted a similar survey of Korean temple sites, especially those where large-scale excavations had taken place. With our research outcomes, we held an international symposium comparing the management of Buddhist temples between Japan and Korea. This concluded with a discussion on the importance of the ‘software aspects’ or ephemeral practices of functions taking within Buddhist temple complexes.

    In the Japanese imperial court, document system with origins in ancient times was used throughout pre-modern, and influenced to various political groups. We named it as "imperial court documents system", and clarified its historical transition. In addition, we elucidated manners to handle those documents. The imperial court document system in Japan was inherited from China, and was reorganized in Heian period to the inquiry documents system. So Senji, Kanmon and Sadamebumi became more important. Transfer documents and account books that played central role once, began to diffuse to some political groups such as Kuge or Buke.

    We catalogued roughly 1 million digital images of documents held by the Royal Household and major noble library collections, and made detailed individual inventory entries for 200, 000 items listed by the Higashiyama Obunko-bon and Fushimi no Miyake-bon. Preparations to make these available in the reading room of the Historiographical Institute, University of Tokyo, are underway. Two other projects were completed : a database for searching the names of personages that appear in mokkan, and a chronology about the interactions of ancient Japan with other countries, including the transmission of Chinese texts(kanseki). Also published were Research on Royal and Noble Libraries, vols. 3-4, four volumes of research findings. and bibliographies of individual royal and noble library collections. For the purposes of community outreach, roughly one hundred lectures were delivered in venues such as the Y. mei Bunko Lectures and Iwase Bunko Lecture Series ; a portion of these lectures was made into a book aimed at the general public

    When we think about Japanese ancient politics and religion, national temples and their manors are very important. In this study, I repeated detailed historical materials investigation and local surveys, and clarified the actual situation of national temples and their manors. At first, about the national temples, I traced the formation process of Todaiji temple in detail, and elucidated relations with the policy of Kokubunji temples. Next, by comparison with the Buddhist ceremony in the royal palace, I restored a real image about the Buddhist ceremony of the national temples. And I investigated the manors of Guhukuji temple, Kofukuji temple and Todai-ji temple. As a result, it became clear that Emperors or nobles had ever owned most of the manors of the national temples, and they left the method of the management of that time. In addition, about Kofukuji temple and Todaiji temple, I succeeded in restoring a change process from the ancient manors to the medieval manors.

    The purpose of this research is to investigate documents which Doshu and Inke (inside groups of Nara temple) left behind, and do a fundamental study about the character of these documents so that we can clarify a construction and a life of Nara temple, which played an important part in both religious and secular sides of the Medieval Period. After we started our study in 2003, we investigated Todaiji Housyuin documents (more than 800 items) which Doshu of Todaiji Hokkedo and Chumondo left behind, and Ichijoin documents (more than 2000 items, both Housyuin documents and Ichijoin documents are owned by The Kyoto University Museum) which Nijoke left behind. Nijoke is Boukan of Ichijoin, which is a representative Inke of Kohfukuji temple. Even though Housyuin documents are rare both in the quality and in the number, they have never been investigated in earnest. We finished the investigation of original documents of all items and made a records plus a catalog. Along with that, we finished reprinting documents made in Heian, Kamakura era. We also investigated original documents of Ichijoin documents, and finished making a catalog of all 2287 items. With the result mentioned above, we perused Housyuin documents and Ichijoin documents, and printed seven related references in scientific research report.

    1) On Maruyama-nishi site, recently found in Todaiji-temple, we collected roof edge tiles to research. As a result, roof tiles made for the primary building of Maruyama-nishi site were classified as early Kofukuji-temple types. So we estimated that a temple was founded at Maruyama in late 720's. 2) On Maruyama-nishi site, we made a survey to make large-scale maps. We also investigated underground with radar and electrical systems, and succeeded in finding ruins clearly. We believe firmly that a big temple has been berried there. 3) We researched Todaiji-temple documents to collect datum of Tenchiin-temple, Otomodera-temple and domains located near Todaiji-temple, and constructed a database. Consequently, we made it clear that at Maruyama existed a forest temple in Nara period, Shimakon'in-temple in Heian period, an unknown small temple in Kamakura period, rice paddy and forest in Edo period. 4) We have come to conclusion that Kinshoji-temple was founded at Maruyama, Fukujuji-temple at Join block, and these two temples were unified into Konkomyoji-temple that subsequently developed to Todaiji-temple. Todaiji-temple must have been originally built as a forest temple by the organization inherited from Kofukuji-temple.

  23. The Study on Urban-Documents in premodern Japan

    1) We investigated the following urban-document groups kept in the Kyoto University Museum. Ancient and Medieval documents: Komonjoshu, Todaiji Temple Documents, Ichijoin Temple Documents, and Kyoogokokuji Temple Documents. Early Modern documents: Nakayamake Family Documents, Uekawake Family Documents, and Gionmachi Documents. After recording on cards, we constructed data bases of each document groups. At the same time, we made copies of important documents. As a result, some properties of urban-documents which were made by lords in Medieval Nara and families in Early Modern Kyoto have became clear. We'll be able to grow ''Urban-Documents'' as a historical concept. 2) To compare to the above-mentioned document groups, we investigated the following urban-document groups kept in the other archives. Ancient and Medieval documents: Mibuke Family Documents, Nijoke Family Documents, Omiyake Family Documents, Todaiji Temple Documents, and Toji Temple Documents. Early Modern documents: Itakurake Family Documents. And we made it clear that some civil court documents ware included in Itakura Family Documents, and from them we can know the actual state of the administration and society in the early modern Kyoto. 3) We collected and investigated of decisions in the Kamakura period. 4) We multilaterally examinated ''Urban-Documents'' as a historical concept and confirmed its availability.

    1) We investigated on stamped ancient documents owned by some temples, libraries and museums. And we recorded their datails, and collected photographes. We almost finished the investigation on Todaiji-temple, Toji-temple and Eizanji-temple documents. 2) We studied institutions about ancient official stamps enacted in Taiho-Rituryo (****) and the other laws. As the result, we made it clear that Naiin (** ; the stamp of King) was used for orders to local govemment offices, and that Gein (** ; the stamp of Cabinet) was used for copies of them. And we explained that the shape of Naiin was widely informed to local govemment offices in 701. 3) We collected the shape of Kokuins (** ; the stamps of local govemment offices) and studied changes on them. As the result, we made it clear that the Kokuins used in Tenpyo Period (729-749) was casted in 704 as a work to decide characters of local govements' name, and that the recasting of Kokuins was started in the middle of 8th century. 4) We studied the form of Gein-syoin (**** ; stamping Gain) with manuscripts on Cabinet politics. As the result, we explained that the origin of Gein-syoin was Kanin (** ; supervision of stamps) enacted in Rituryo, and that Gein-syoin was carried out until 10th century in the Cabinet office. 5) We collected the shape of Soins (** ; the stamps for granary) , explain the change of Yamato Soin (****) , and made it clear that Soins were used by Zuryoes (** ; govemors) illegally staying in Kyoto.

    1)古代仏教教団の検討の手始めとして、東大寺の組織・法会について検討した。素材として天平勝宝8歳(756)の「東大寺図」を選び、描かれた内容を現地地形や他史料を勘案しつつ分析した。結果は以下の通り。(1)東大寺は平城京東山の諸宗教施設(山の東大寺)とそこに結縁する都市民の信仰を基盤として成立した。しかし、官寺(野の東大寺)としての発展には光明皇后と良弁の果たした役割が決定的であった。この二重性こそが奈良時代東大寺の特色である。 (2)「東大寺図」には描かれないものの、成立当初から多数の僧侶集団が存在し、彼らが法会を執行していた。その運営についても、従来からのものと国家的要請に基づくものという二重性が指摘でき、また山林と水の宗教的重要性が再確認された。 (3)「東大寺図」に示された四至は平安時代になって拡大し、それが偽文書「東大寺寺地勅定文」に表現されている。東大寺領川上荘や春日山東方の山林修行場の発展が、その背景にあったと考えられる。 2)奈良・平安時代の太政官政務を分析し、そこから律令官人集団の行動原理の変容について考察を加えた。検討に当たっては、政務作法を具体的に復原した。これによって以下の二点が明らかとなった。 (1)決裁者が文書を閲読する「申文刺文」形式の政務の成立・発展によって、律令制以前からの口頭伝達を基盤とする官司運営理念に大きな変化がもたらされた。 (2)律令官司の共同性の確保においては食事の占める意味が大きいが、「申文刺文」形式の政務は正式の政務の後の食事の場において発展した。

    The research in humanity studies is normally carried out on personal bases not as a research group. Therfore, the cost for the development of databases should be as low as possible. The information used for retrieval should be given automatically, it possible, because the amount of text or image data is sometimes enormous, and it is virtually impossible to prepare this information manually. The development was mainly centered on image data input and their effective retrieval, which is suitable for researchers in humanity studies. In this research, the 8mm video tape is used for image storage. One of the large problems which we encounter for the use of tapes is that we ordinarily need long time to search required image from a tape. To overcome this obstacle, we connected a video camera and other sensors like GPS with a personnal computer(PC), and automatically collected sensor output to a PC floppy disc. The information is used later to point the tape automatically at the adequate tape position where the acquired image is recorded. The GPS sensor is useful if geographical position of recorded place is unknown. The sensor detecting the direction of camera recording is also effective, and the necessary interface has been designed and produced. As the economical and handy camera has relatively low image resolation. Therefore the classic documents in scroll with many hand-written characters should be recorded magnifying and separating in parts. We developed a technique to automatically joint recorded images, by recognizing the same character positions in partial images of the same document. As for classic text processing, the database of the Shokunihongui (a historical book in ancient Japanese history), and a classic law document in Thailand were open for retrieval use at the Data Processing Center, Kyoto University. These are also available in book forms form publishers. These are now effectively used for research. Annually, in February or March, a symposium was held for computer applications in Asian Studies at the Data Processing Center in Kyoto University. Some problems are still left for future development. The problems include the design and development of the multimedia database, in which the character and image data are linked effectively. The extraction of captions from video images, and the detection of chang in camera direction have been tried.
