    The 64Cu/67Cu pair is an ideal set of theranostic radionuclides for treating patients based on their genetic profiles. We propose a novel production route for this radionuclide pair using accelerator-generated neutrons. We report experimental measurements of the absolute activity and radionuclide purity of 64Cu and 67Cu, produced by irradiating 64Zn and 68Zn with these neutrons. The measured results were consistent with simulated values. 64Cu and 67Cu were separated from the irradiated natural Zn and 68Zn using sublimation and column separation techniques. The production methods for 64Cu and 67Cu developed in this study are expected to enhance their availability in an economically sustainable manner.

    Currently, targeted alpha therapy (TAT) is a new therapy involving the administration of a therapeutic drug that combines a substance of α-emitting nuclides that kill cancer cells and a drug that selectively accumulates in cancer cells. It is known to be effective against cancers that are difficult to treat with existing methods, such as cancer cells that are widely spread throughout the whole body, and there are high expectations for its early clinical implementation. The nuclides for TAT, including 149Tb, 211At, 212/213Bi, 212Pb (for 212Bi), 223Ra, 225Ac, 226/227Th, and 230U, are known. However, some nuclides encounter problems with labeling methods and lack sufficient preclinical and clinical data. We labeled the compounds targeting prostate specific membrane antigen (PSMA) with 211At and 225Ac. PSMA is a molecule that has attracted attention as a theranostic target for prostate cancer, and several targeted radioligands have already shown therapeutic effects in patients. The results showed that 211At, which has a much shorter half-life, is no less cytotoxic than 225Ac. In 211At labeling, our group has also developed an original method (Shirakami Reaction). We have succeeded in obtaining a highly purified labeled product in a short timeframe using this method.

    <title>Summary</title>Chemical studies on element 104, rutherfordium (Rf), at JAERI (Japan Atomic Energy Research Institute) are reviewed. The transactinide nuclide261Rf has been produced in the reaction248Cm(18O, 5<italic>n</italic>) at the JAERI tandem accelerator with the production cross section of about 13 nb. On-line anion-exchange experiments on Rf together with the lighter homologues, group-4 elements Zr and Hf, in acidic solutions have been conducted with a rapid ion-exchange separation apparatus. From the systematic study of the anion-exchange behavior of Rf, it has been found that the properties of Rf in HCl and HNO3solutions are quite similar to those of Zr and Hf, definitely confirming that Rf is a member of the group-4 elements. However, we have observed an unexpected chemical behavior of Rf in HF solutions; the fluoride complex formation of Rf is significantly different from those of the homologues. Prospects of extending chemical studies on transactinide elements in the near future at JAERI are briefly considered.

    Abstract Macropa has formed more stable complexes with 225Ac, although DOTA has been extensively used as a chelator for 225Ac. This study aimed to design and synthesize two novel 225Ac-labeled RGD peptides, [225Ac]Ac-Macropa-c(RGDyK) ([225Ac]1) and [225Ac]Ac-Macropa-[c(RGDyK)]2 ([225Ac]2), and to evaluate their potential for targeted alpha therapy (TAT) of glioblastoma. Further, whether combination therapy with homoarginine (hArg), a modulator of lysosomal function, could further improve therapeutic efficacy was investigated. In Colon-26 cells, [225Ac]2 demonstrated significantly higher cellular uptake and cytotoxicity than [225Ac]1. In Colon-26 tumor-bearing mice, [225Ac]2 exhibited higher tumor accumulation and significant tumor growth inhibition. In GL261 glioblastoma cells, [225Ac]2 showed comparable cellular uptake to that in Colon-26 cells, and combination with hArg in vitro improved its cytotoxicity. However, no significant difference in therapeutic efficacy was observed between the hArg-treated and control groups in the orthotopic GL261 glioblastoma mouse model. The results of this study indicate the potential of 225Ac-labeled RGD peptides incorporating Macropa as a chelator as promising agents for TAT. However, the further optimization of combination strategies and pharmacokinetics is required.

    For the research and development of accelerator-driven systems (ADSs) and fundamental ADS reactor physics research using the Kyoto University Critical Assembly combined with the fixed-field alternating gradient (FFAG) accelerator, we are conducting a series of experiments on double-differential neutron yields using the FFAG accelerator at Kyoto University.     Flerovium (Fl, element 114) is the heaviest element chemically studied so far. To date, its interaction with gold was investigated in two gas-solid chromatography experiments, which reported two different types of interaction, however, each based on the level of a few registered atoms only. Whereas noble-gas-like properties were suggested from the first experiment, the second one pointed at a volatile-metal-like character. Here, we present further experimental data on adsorption studies of Fl on silicon oxide and gold surfaces, accounting for the inhomogeneous nature of the surface, as it was used in the experiment and analyzed as part of the reported studies. We confirm that Fl is highly volatile and the least reactive member of group 14. Our experimental observations suggest that Fl exhibits lower reactivity towards Au than the volatile metal Hg, but higher reactivity than the noble gas Rn.

    The sensitive $^{90}$Sr analysis with accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS) was developed for the advances of environmental radiology. One advantage of AMS is the ability to analyze various environmental samples with $^{90}$Sr/$^{88}$Sr atomic ratios of 10$^{-14}$ in a simple chemical separation. Three different IAEA samples with known $^{90}$Sr concentrations (moss-soil, animal bone, Syrian soil: 1 g each) were analyzed to assess the validity of the chemical separation and the AMS measurement. The $^{90}$Sr measurements were conducted on the AMS system combined with the Ion Laser InterAction MasSpectrometry (ILIAMS) setup at the University of Vienna, which has excellent isobaric separation performance. The isobaric interference of $^{90}$Zr in the $^{90}$Sr AMS was first removed by chemical separation. The separation factor of Zr in two-step column chromatography with Sr resin and anion exchange resin was 10$^{6}$. The $^{90}$Zr remaining in the sample was removed by ILIAMS effectively. This simple chemical separation achieved a limit of detection $<$ 0.1 mBq in the $^{90}$Sr AMS, which is lower than typical $\beta$-ray detection. The agreement between AMS measurements and nominal values for the $^{90}$Sr concentrations of IAEA samples indicated that the new highly-sensitive $^{90}$Sr analysis in the environmental samples with AMS is reliable even for high matrix samples of soil and bone.

    <title>Abstract</title> In 2014 the first synthesis of a transactinide carbonyl complex – seaborgium hexacarbonyl – was reported. This was achieved in gas-phase chemical experiments in a beam-free environment behind the recoil separator GARIS. Extending this work to heavier elements requires more efficient techniques to synthesize carbonyl complexes as production rates of transactinide elements drop with increasing atomic number. A novel approach was thus conceived, which retains the benefit of a beam-free environment but avoids the physical preseparation step. The latter reduces the yields for products of asymmetric reactions such as those used for the synthesis of suitable isotopes of Sg, Bh, Hs and Mt. For this a series of experiments with accelerator-produced radioisotopes of the lighter homologues W, Re and Os was carried out at the tandem accelerator of JAEA Tokai, Japan. A newly developed double-chamber system, which allows for a decoupled recoil ion thermalization and chemical complex formation, was used, which avoids the low-efficiency physical preseparation step. Here, we demonstrate the feasibility of this newly developed method using accelerator-produced short-lived radioisotopes of the 5d homologues of the early transactinides.

    <title>Abstract</title> The aim of this study was to identify relevant Rf chemical species by using reversed-phase extraction chromatography with 2-thenoyltrifluoroacetone (TTA) resin as the stationary phase. Because TTA can be used to extract specific metal ions, the distribution ratios of the system enabled determination of the specific complex formation constant of Rf. We performed several experiments on chemical systems with Zr, Hf, No, and Rf, determined their adsorption coefficients, and deduced the <italic>K</italic> d values for Rf.

    <title>Abstract</title> Online gas-solid adsorption studies with single-atom quantities of Hg, Tl, and Pb, the lighter homologs of the superheavy elements (SHE) copernicium (Cn, <italic>Z</italic>=112), nihonium (Nh, <italic>Z</italic>=113), and flerovium (Fl, <italic>Z</italic>=114), were carried out using short-lived radioisotopes. The interaction with Au and SiO2 surfaces was studied and the overall chemical yield was determined. Suitable radioisotopes were produced in fusion-evaporation reactions, isolated in the gas-filled recoil separator TASCA, and flushed rapidly to an adjacent setup of two gas chromatography detector arrays covered with SiO2 (first array) and Au (second array). While Tl and Pb adsorbed on the SiO2 surface, Hg interacts only weakly and reached the Au-covered array. Our results contribute to elucidating the influence of relativistic effects on chemical properties of the heaviest elements by providing experimental data on these lighter homologs.

    85Zr, 169Hf, and 261Rf were produced simultaneously from natGe (18O, xn), natGd (18O, xn), and 248Cm (18O, 5n) reactions, respectively, and the volatility of their chlorides was examined using an isothermal gas chromatographic system. The observed gas chromatogram indicated that ZrCl4, HfCl4, and RfCl4 had almost similar volatility.

    Summary Hassium, element 108, was produced in the fusion reaction between26Mg and248Cm. The hassium recoils were oxidizedin-situto a highly volatile oxide, presumably HsO4, and were transported in a mixture of He and O2to a deposition and detection system. The latter consisted of 16 silicon PIN-photodiodes facing a layer of NaOH, which served, in the presence of a certain partial pressure of water in the transport gas, as reactive surface for the deposition of the volatile tetroxides. Six correlated α-decay chains of Hs were detected in the first 5 detectors centred around detection position 3. In analogy to OsO4, which forms Na2[OsO4(OH)2], an osmate(VIII), with aqueous NaOH, HsO4presumably was deposited as Na2[HsO4(OH)2], a hassate(VIII).

    The oxidation state of actinide elements encapsulated in fullerenes is studied. HPLC elution behavior of actinidefullerenes is classified into two groups; the elution behavior of the first group, encapsulating U, Np, and Am, issimilar to that of the light lanthanide fullerenes, such as La, Ce, Pr, and Nd, while the behavior of the second group, encapsulating Th and Pa, is quite different from that of any lanthanide fullerenes. The chemical species in the mainHPLC elution peak of each group were identified as M @C82 and M @C84 (M=metal atom) from the mass of the U and Th fullerenes, respectively. The oxidation states of the U and Th atoms in the fullerenes were deduced to be 3+ and 4+, respectively, from the UV/vis/NIR absorption and XANES spectroscopy.

    Characteristics of nuclear deformation properties at scission of two fission modes, symmetric and asymmetric, are reviewed. Existence of two kinds of scission configurations associated with the symmetric and asymmetric fission modes is pointed out: elongated and compact configurations. Each symmetric and asymmetric scission property is discussed in terms of shape elongation evaluated from fragment total kinetic energy (TKE). Fragment deformation at scission is also discussed based on neutron multiplicity data. From the systematic study of the scission properties in a wide range of actinide fission, the bimodal fission observed in spontaneous fission (SF) of the heavy actinides is interpreted as the result of the presence of the two fission paths of the ordinary asymmetric mode and a strongly shell-influenced symmetric one. The correlation between the fragment shell structures and the asymmetric mass-yield curves is described.

    The fluoride complexation of the group-4 elements Zr, Hf and Rf, and of the pseudo-homolog Th, has been investigated in mixed HNO3/HF solutions by studying Kd values on both cation exchange resins (CIX) and anion exchange resins (AIX) using the automated rapid chemistry apparatus ARCA. On the CIX, the four elements are strongly retained as cations below 10-3M HF. For Zr and Hf, the decrease of the Kd values due to the formation of fluoride complexes occurs between 10-3M HF and 10-2M HF. For Rf and Th, this decrease is observed at one order of magnitude higher HF concentrations. On the AIX, for Zr and Hf, a rise of the Kd values due to the formation of anionic fluoride complexes is observed between 10-3M HF and 10-2M HF, i.e. in the same range of HF concentrations where the decrease of the Kd values on the CIX is observed, yielding a consistent picture. For Rf and Th, on the AIX, no rise of the Kd values is observed even if the HF concentration is increased up to 1 M. By varying the concentration of the counter ion NO3-which is competing for the binding sites on the AIX resin, it could be shown, nevertheless, that Rf does form anionic fluoride complexes. Apparently, there is a more specific competition of NO3-with respect to [RfFx](x-4)-than with [ZrFy](y-4)-and [HfFz](z-4)-.

    Heavy elements beyond mendelevium (_<101>Md) are usually available in quantities of only a few atoms at a time for experiments, and so studies on their chemical properties have to be performed based on the single atom chemistry with an accelerator online experiment. Therefore, chemical properties of the so-called superheavy elements are little known and remain to be further investigated. The synthesis of Element 113 in RIKEN demonstrates that full studies of superheavy elements are indeed underway in Japan. Recently we found some new chemical properties of rutherfordium (_<104>Rf) at JAERI. Here we have briefly demonstrated the fascinating studies involved in probing the structure of the periodic table at its uppermost end, where relativistic effects drastically influence chemical properties. As well, the present status of chemical studies on superheavy elements in Japan is reviewed, and some research plans for the near future are briefly discussed.

    The ground－state band of the neutron－rich transuranium nucleus 250Cm was established up to spin 12 by in－beam <TEX>$\gamma$</TEX>－ray spectroscopy using the two－neutron transfer reaction with a 248Cm target and a 162 MeV 18O beam. Deexcitation <TEX>$\gamma$</TEX>rays in 250Cm were identified by selecting the kinetic energies of 16O particles using Si <TEX>$\Delta E$</TEX>–<TEX>$E$</TEX>detectors. The moment of inertia of 250Cm154 is considerably smaller than that of 248Cm152, which supports the existence of the deformed subshell closure at <TEX>$N=152$</TEX>in Cm isotopes.
