Abstract Time-resolved X-ray magnetic circular dichroism under the effects of ferromagnetic resonance (FMR), known as X-ray ferromagnetic resonance (XFMR) measurements, enables direct detection of precession dynamics of magnetic moment. Here we demonstrated XFMR measurements and Bayesian analyses as a quantitative probe for the precession of spin and orbital magnetic moments under the FMR effect. Magnetization precessions in two different Pt/Ni-Fe thin film samples were directly detected. Furthermore, the ratio of dynamical spin and orbital magnetic moments was evaluated quantitatively by Bayesian analyses for XFMR energy spectra around the Ni $$L_{2,3}$$ absorption edges. Our study paves the way for a microscopic investigation of the contribution of the orbital magnetic moment to magnetization dynamics.

Two-dimensional transition metal dichalcogenides (2D TMDs) have shown exceptional electrochemical catalytic activity for the efficient generation of hydrogen through electrochemical water splitting. In the case of molybdenum disulfide (MoS2), a prominent member of 2D TMDs, the electrochemically active sites primarily reside at the edges, while the basal plane, which constitutes the majority of the MoS2 structure, remains relatively inactive. In this study, we aimed to activate the inert sites of the basal plane with some defective structure for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) by employing an electrochemical-probe in combination with voltage sweeping. The initiation of HER at these previously inactive sites was visualized and confirmed using scanning electrochemical cell microscopy (SECCM). Our findings reveal that the enhanced HER activity originates from surface defects induced by the probing process.

The ability of two-dimensional, layered transition-metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) to promote hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) has attracted much attention for hydrogen-generation applications. Their electrocatalytic active sites originally come from unique electronic properties at the edges. Here, we use scanning electrochemical cell microscopy (SECCM) to visualize and quantify the electrochemical HER activities of tungsten disulfide (WS2) islands. We show that the HER correlated current distribution is affected by the number of WS2 layers. SECCM imaging provides a direction for future designs in TMD-based electrocatalysts.

Abstract We report measurements of low-temperature magnetoresistance in Sr1−x La x CuO2 (x = 0.1) epitaxial thin film grown on (110) DyScO3 single crystal. A positive magnetoresistance which is anisotropic and hysteretic with respect to the in-plane direction of magnetic field appears in Sr1−x La x CuO2 below T = 5 K, coinciding with antiferromagnetic ordering and strong magnetic anisotropy in DyScO3. The interplay of magnetotransport in epitaxial Sr1−x La x CuO2 with magnetism in the substrate is discussed based on magnetostriction and magnetic relaxation in DyScO3.

In this research project, we focused on superconducting materials with topological band structures, and explored spin transport phenomena under the interplay of spin orbit interaction and dissipation-free environment. We constructed measurement devices with junctions of topological superconducting materials and ferromagnets, and performed spin injection and detection experiments. We found a resistance response specific to the superconducting state and discussed its origin. In addition, we demonstrated modulation of resistivity in thin film high-temperature superconductor cuprate films by magnetization relaxation and magnetostriction in the crystal substrate.

The role of spin excitations in the appearance of superconductivity in high-temperature superconductors has been long discussed. In this study, we aim to observe spin excitations in high-temperature superconducting materials by the injection of spin current. The samples are high-temperature cuprates and iron-based superconductors coated with a thin film of ferromagnetic metal. By applying microwaves to the ferromagnetic coating, spin current injected into the superconductor material is estimated from the magnetic damping constant. As a result, we observed a change in damping constant close to the superconducting transition temperature in cuprate materials and below the structural transition temperature in iron-based materials. We have considered the origin of this effect.
