    Abstract Brachiopod shells have been widely used as paleoenvironmental recorders because of their robust preservation in fossil records. However, accurately reconstructing past seawater temperatures from their oxygen (δ 18 O) and clumped isotope compositions requires identifying shells/shell portions that are minimally affected by kinetic isotope effects (KIE) and diagenetic alteration. This study investigated the potential of Raman spectroscopy as a rapid and non-destructive screening method for shells/shell portions. We conducted Raman spectroscopy on fossil and modern brachiopod calcite shells from Japan and Thailand, focusing on the ν₁ peak center position (peak center) and full width at half maximum (FWHM). The results revealed that intraspecific variations in the peak center and FWHM were relatively small, with each species exhibiting a distinct peak center and FWHM range. The brachiopod shell portions with low Mg and Sr concentrations exhibited peak centers and FWHM values that were closer to those of pure calcite. Depth profile analyses further indicated that shell portions at a 60–90% relative depth from the outer surface were the least affected by KIE and crystal distortion. Shells altered by meteoric diagenesis exhibited significant shifts in the peak center and FWHM, with higher Mn concentrations being more intense, corroborating diagenetic alteration. These findings suggest that Raman spectroscopy is an effective screening tool for selecting well-preserved brachiopod shells/shell portions suitable for paleoenvironmental reconstructions. Integrating Raman spectroscopy with conventional screening methods to identify well-preserved shells/shell portions is expected to raise the reliability of δ 18 O- and clumped isotope-based paleotemperature reconstructions.

    Abstract. Sea surface temperature (SST) variability in the south-eastern tropical Indian Ocean is crucial for rainfall variability in Indian Ocean rim countries. A large body of literature has focused on zonal variability associated with the Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD), but it is unclear whether meridional shifts in the position of the Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ), which at present co-vary with the IOD, may also occur independently. We have developed a new, monthly resolved Sr/Ca record from a sub-fossil coral cored at Enggano Island (Indonesia, 5° S, 102° E). Core sections containing diagenetic phases are omitted from the SST reconstruction. U/Th dating shows that the Sr/Ca-based SST record extends from 1917–1868 and from 1861–1823 with a relative age uncertainty of ±2.4 years (2σ). At Enggano Island, coastal upwelling and cooling in austral spring is coupled to the position of the ITCZ, and impacts SST seasonality. The sub-fossil coral indicates an increase in SST seasonality due to enhanced austral spring cooling between 1917 and 1855, which we attribute to stronger SE winds and a northward shift in the position of the ITCZ in austral spring. A nearby sediment core indicates SST cooling and a shallowing of the thermocline prior to ~1930. These results are consistent with an increase in the North-South SST gradient in the eastern Indian Ocean calculated from historical temperature data, that is not seen in the zonal SST gradient. We conclude that the relationship between meridional and zonal variability in the eastern Indian Ocean is non-stationary and influenced by long-term temperature trends.

    Temperature seasonality during the middle Cretaceous provides vital information about climate dynamics and ecological traits of organisms under the conditions of the “supergreenhouse” Earth. However, sub-annual scale paleotemperature records in the mid-latitude region remain limited. In this study, sclerochronological and stable oxygen isotope (δ18O) analyses of bivalve fossils from the northwestern Pacific (paleolatitude: 44°N) were used to estimate their life history and sub-annual scale temperature patterns of the middle Cretaceous. The materials studied included Cucullaea (Idonearca) delicatostriata and Aphrodina pseudoplana recovered from middle Turonian (middle Cretaceous) shallow marine deposits in Hokkaido, northern Japan. Growth increment width and shell δ18O of C. (I.) delicatostriata revealed that the growth rate was temporally maximized and then minimized, which can be interpreted as representing spring and winter growth, respectively. Approximately 25 fortnightly growth increments occurred within that cycle, suggesting that shell formation proceeded continuously throughout the year. Based on shell δ18O values, shallow-water temperatures from 28°C to 35°C with 7°C seasonality were estimated, under the assumption that seawater δ18O values were annually invariant at −1‰ relative to VSMOW. This temperature seasonality in the middle Cretaceous is more than 5°C smaller than the seasonality of modern shallow-water environments at the same latitudes. These findings, taken together with previous studies of other oceanic regions, suggest that the Northern Hemisphere had low seasonal shallow-water temperature variation of up to 10°C in the middle Cretaceous.

    Abstract Estimates of uplift rates for lithospheric forebulges are needed to understand exact plate motions at plate convergence zones and to delineate the fate of coral reefs atop the forebulges. A carbonate island on a lithospheric forebulge can provide excellent materials for estimating uplift rate because carbonate sediments can be dated and their paleo-water depth determined. We estimated the uplift rate of Kitadaito Jima Island, a carbonate island on the lithospheric forebulge of the Philippine Sea Plate that is subducting beneath the Eurasian Plate. Marine skeletal sands containing pebble-sized bioclasts and filling the concavity of an intertidal erosional notch at an elevation of ~ 71 m were found near the top of this island. Strontium isotope ages ranging from 1.78 to 2.01 Ma with an average of 1.89 Ma (standard deviation = 0.07 Ma) were obtained from these deposits. As global sea level at 1.89 Ma was ~ 21 m lower than the present, the mean uplift rate was estimated at ~ 49 m/million years (Myr) with a compounded uncertainty of ± 2.6 m/Myr. This rate is comparable to, or up to ~ 140 m/Myr less than, rates reported from other Indo-Pacific carbonate islands in similar tectonic settings. This study illustrates how contemporary Sr isotope age models and careful considerations of limestone sample depositional depths can yield more accurate and precise uplift rates of modern forearc bulges than possible in many older studies.

    Abstract We investigated the water-mass structure on the Okinawa Trough and Pacific sides of the southern Ryukyu Island Arc (Yonaguni, Iriomote, and Ishigaki subareas) using the Nd isotope composition (143Nd/144Nd ratios; expressed as εNd values) of benthic foraminiferal tests in surface sediments, which reflect bottom-water composition, along with hydrogen and oxygen isotope compositions (δD and δ18O values, respectively) and physical properties (temperature and salinity) of seawater. The Okinawa Trough side has lower εNd values than the Pacific side due to continental/island material inputs characterized by relatively low εNd values. Moreover, within the Okinawa Trough, other processes control the Nd behavior of seawater and primarily affect the Yonaguni and Iriomote subareas, as follows. (1) Surface and subsurface waters are influenced by Taiwanese river discharge combined with temporospatial variations in oceanographic conditions including Kuroshio Current meandering. (2) Intermediate water is characterized by low εNd values (down to − 8.2), possibly attributable to sediment plumes and turbiditic fluxes. (3) The εNd values of bottom water indicate upwelling and vertical mixing, with composition therefore being similar to those of intermediate water. The εNd profiles are better defined on the Pacific side. High εNd values occur in surface and subsurface (< 300 m depth, potential density < 25.0 kg m−3) waters, and low values (down to − 7.0) occur in subsurface–core-intermediate water (400–600 m depth, 26–27 kg m−3). εNd values increase slightly to − 4.0 below 750 m depth and remain constant down to about 2000 m depth, below which deep water shows a slight decrease in εNd values. Intermediate and bottom/deep waters are distinguished from upper layers by their lower δD and δ18O values.

    Abstract We applied a new geoarchaeological method with two carbonate archives, which are fossil snails from Sakitari Cave and stalagmites from Gyokusen Cave, on Okinawa Island, Japan, to reconstruct surface air temperature changes over the northwestern Pacific since the last glacial period. Oxygen isotope ratios (δ18O) of modern and fossil freshwater snail shells were determined to infer seasonal temperature variations. The observational and analytical data confirm that δ18O values of fluid inclusion waters in the stalagmite can be regarded as those of spring waters at the sites where snails lived. Our results indicate that the annual mean, summer, and winter air temperatures were lower by 6–7 °C at ca. 23 thousand years ago (ka) and 4–5 °C at ca. 16–13 ka than those of the present day. Our reconstruction implies that surface air cooling was possibly two times greater than that of seawater around the Ryukyu Islands during the Last Glacial Maximum, which potentially enhanced the development of the East Asian summer monsoon during the last deglaciation. Considering the potential uncertainties in the temperature estimations, the climatic interpretations of this study are not necessarily definitive due to the limited number of samples. Nevertheless, our new geoarchaeological approach using coupled δ18O determinations of fossil snails and stalagmite fluid inclusion waters will be useful for reconstructing snapshots of seasonally resolved time series of air temperatures during the Quaternary.

    <title>Abstract</title>Macroids and rhodoliths, made by encrusting acervulinid foraminifera and coralline algae, are widely recognized as bioengineers providing relatively stable microhabitats and increasing biodiversity for other species. Macroid and rhodolith beds occur in different depositional settings at various localities and bathymetries worldwide. Six case studies of macroid/rhodolith beds from 0 to 117 m water depth in the Pacific Ocean (northern Central Ryukyu Islands, French Polynesia), eastern Australia (Fraser Island, One Tree Reef, Lizard Island), and the Mediterranean Sea (southeastern Spain) show that nodules in the beds are perforated by small-sized boring bivalve traces (<italic>Gastrochaenolites</italic>). On average, boring bivalve shells (gastrochaenids and mytilids) are more slender and smaller than those living inside shallow-water rocky substrates. In the Pacific, <italic>Gastrochaena cuneiformis</italic>, <italic>Gastrochaena</italic> sp., <italic>Leiosolenus malaccanus</italic>, <italic>L. mucronatus</italic>, <italic>L</italic>. spp., and <italic>Lithophaga</italic>/<italic>Leiosolenus</italic> sp., for the first time identified below 20 m water depth, occur as juvenile forms along with rare small-sized adults. In deep-water macroids and rhodoliths the boring bivalves are larger than the shallower counterparts in which growth of juveniles is probably restrained by higher overturn rates of host nodules. In general, most boring bivalves are juveniles that grew faster than the acervulinid foraminiferal and coralline red algal hosts and rarely reached the adult stage. As a consequence of phenotypic plasticity, small-sized adults with slow growth rates coexist with juveniles. Below wave base macroids and rhodoliths had the highest amounts of bioerosion, mainly produced by sponges and polychaete worms. These modern observations provide bases for paleobiological inferences in fossil occurrences.

    The Pleistocene Ryukyu Group, composed of reef-complex deposits, crops out in southern Okinawa-jima, Ryukyu Islands, southwestern Japan. Here, based on new investigations, we revise the previous stratigraphic scheme for the Ryukyu Group and provide a formal stratigraphic description. In the study area, the Ryukyu Group comprises the Itoman, Naha, and Minatogawa formations. The Itoman Formation, composed mainly of coralline algal limestone, is thin (>2 m thick) and sporadically distributed. The Naha Formation rests unconformably on the Itoman Formation, reaches 50 m in thickness, and is exposed at elevations of up to ca. 170 m. The Naha Formation is divisible into four units; each unit is composed of coral limestone overlain by rhodolith, Cycloclypeus—Operculina, and detrital limestones, showing a deepening-upward sequence. The contact between the upper two units (units 3 and 4) is unconformable; this unconformity is present in other areas in Okinawa-jima, such as Yomitan, the Motobu Peninsula, and Ie-jima. Calcareous nannofossil assemblages indicate that deposition of the Naha Formation began at 1.392—1.706 Ma, and continued until after 0.853 Ma. The Itoman Formation and the lowest interval of the Naha Formation are coeval, and they represent, respectively, reef and off-reef facies of reef-complex deposits. The Minatogawa Formation rests unconformably on the Naha Formation, reaches 20 m in thickness, and consists of well-sorted detrital and coral limestones that are thought to have been deposited in a shallow lagoon (moat); its surface exposure is confined to elevations of less than 50 m. The geologic age of the Minatogawa Formation is unknown at this time.

    We present strontium (Sr) isotope data for island-surface dolomites at Kita-daito-jima, northern Philippine Sea. The 87Sr/86Sr ratios of 50 samples fall within a wide range from 0.709037 to 0.709079, corresponding to 4.9-2.1 Ma. This wide range in Sr ages reflects the fact that the island-surface dolomites comprise variable mixtures of geochemically distinct, diachronous, dolomite crystal phases. Our results indicate that the Sr isotope ages of multi-generational dolomites on carbonate islands such as Niue and Little Bahama Bank, as well as Kita-daito-jima, should be re-examined employing a new method that determines the Sr isotope ratio of individual crystal phases.

    Aqueously-altered meteorites and asteroids contain organic matter such as amino acids and sugars, which may have contributed to the supply of life's building blocks to the Earth. Such meteorites also contain carbonates with a wide range of carbon isotopic compositions enriched in 13C. In this study, we focused on the fact that formose-type reactions using aldehydes as a carbon source produce amino acids and sugars, and that these reactions are catalyzed by calcium. Various Formose-type reaction experiments were performed to identify the carbonates produced. The results showed that the carbonate produced was calcite, and that the calcite carbon was enriched in 13C compared to the insoluble organic matter produced at the same time. On the other hand, the extent of 13C enrichment is not enough to explain the wide range of 13C-rich carbon isotopic compositions found in the meteorites. Mixing with highly 13C enriched CO2 in asteroids may explain the wide range of 13C enrichments.

    カンブリア系の動物化石群として有名なカナダのバージェス頁岩の動物化石群を蒲郡市生命の海科学館から借用し、それらを2枚の偏光板で挟む手法を用いて光学観察することで軟体部を含む明瞭な形態情報を得ることができた。この手法で多数の標本が産出するMarrella splendensの表面を観察したところ、その腹部から尾部にかけて黒色の染みの存在がほぼすべての個体に見ることができた。この染みの面積は化石体の大きさに正の相関を持つことから、化石化過程の初期に体の内部から染み出した体液に起因するものであることが推察された。 カンブリア紀の動物多様化に比較される現象である、古生代末の大量絶滅後の海洋動物の回復現象に関する研究を、宮崎県高千穂地域の上村石灰岩をフィールドに行い、特にそこに含まれている二枚貝類のサイズ変化を追跡することで海洋底生動物と環境変遷との対応を調べた。その結果、ペルム紀・三畳紀境界以降サイズ増加が見られるものの、Smithian階以降順調に大型化するわけではなく、底生動物にとってストレスのかかった環境が継続していたことが示唆される。 またカンブリア紀に引き続いて多様化の現象が起きたオルドビス紀初期の化石群として、モロッコ産の節足動物化石の研究を開始し、これがカンブリア紀の生き残りで大型化した、二枚の殻を持つ節足動物化石である可能性を指摘することが出来た。この研究を進めるためには、今後モロッコ産の同様の化石標本を海外で観察し、比較する必要がある。

    過去の亜熱帯モード水の分布・物理・化学的性質を再現性高く復元するためには,現在の亜熱帯モード水影響下の現生生物・準化石の群集組成・地球化学データと実際の海洋観測データおよび水塊構造を比較し,亜熱帯モード水の分布・組成を定量的に評価できる手法を作成し,それを化石試料に応用する必要がある.2020年度は,2019年度に現生試料を用いて確立した手法を琉球列島周辺海域より得られた腕足動物の準化石に応用し,過去約2万年間の亜熱帯モード水の物理・化学的性質(水温・塩分・溶存酸素濃度・炭酸系など)および分布と琉球列島中層域の水塊構造の時系列変化を検討した.具体的には,2019年度に確立したB. lucida準化石が1)合弁試料,2)離弁試料,3)破片試料だった場合に分けたサンプリング法に基づいて粉末試料を作成し,その炭素・酸素同位体分析,微量金属元素分析,放射性炭素年代測定などを行った.また,琉球列島周辺の表層堆積物のネオジム・ストロンチウム同位体比も検討した.その結果,B. lucida準化石の炭素・酸素同位体比から過去2万年間の水温・塩分,溶存無機炭素濃度の空間分布の変化を部分的に復元することができた.また,同準化石の微量金属元素濃度分析は,同一試料に物理・化学クリーニングを行い,その必要性について検討している.琉球列島周辺の表層堆積物のネオジム・ストロンチウム同位体比を分析した結果,沖縄本島周辺と八重山諸島周辺とで,亜表層水の海水の起源が異なる可能性が示唆された.

    Sr isotope stratigraphy is widely used to determine sedimentation ages of marine sediments and carbonates. However, dating of quaternary samples by this method was difficult so far because the precision of the 87Sr/86Sr ratio measurement was insufficient to distinguish the very small 87Sr/86Sr variation of the seawater during this period. To resolve this technical bottleneck problem, we developed method for an ultra-high precision analysis of 87Sr/86Sr ratio using dynamic-multicollection thermal ionization mass spectrometry. The long-term analytical reproducibility of 87Sr/86Sr ratio achieved in this study was 2 ppm (2RSD). This analytical precision is sufficient to discriminate between 100 ky cycle of glacial-interglacial periods of the quaternary era. Analysis of foraminifera samples separated from oceanic drilling cores suggested that the current seawater Sr isotopic evolution curve may contain very small systematic errors in the quaternary part.

    We investigated carbon, oxygen, and neodymium isotopes of foraminifers collected from IODP sites U1460 and U463 to delineate the history of the Leeuwin Current and its surrounding surface water masses for the last 4 million years. The cores are mainly composed of shallow water carbonates. We defined Marine Isotope Stage (MIS) of the cores using the correlation between the oxygen isotope records, calcareous nannofossil biostratigraphy, and global benthic LR04 stack from Lisiecki and Raymo (2005). Our results indicate that the modern Leeuwin Current system had initiated from ~1 million years ago, and it became a modern state after the Mid-Brunhes Event. Our records also infer that the LC was not reduced during glacial periods.

    Two species of fossil algae were discovered from the Ediacaran of Zuun Arts, western Mongolia. The beds that contained these algae were concluded as special type of sedimentary rock known as "Burgess-type deposit" based on the chemical analysis and the mode of preservation. In addition, vertical trace fossils were discovered from the Ediacaran of Bayan Gol gorge. These trace fossils show U-shape that penetrate down to 4cm below the uppermost opening, suggesting that the producer was a bilaterian animal that was elongate in form and could burrow deep into the sediment, thus possessed ample musculature. Also this burrow suggests existence of predatory animals. This discovery was contradictory to the existing interpretation about Ediacaran life, firstly giving possible evidence of the existence of bilaterian animals and also predatory animals.

    There are significant intrashell variations in carbon and oxygen isotope composition (d13C and d18O, respectively) and trace element concentrations in modern brachiopod shells. This knowledge was applied to Carboniferous and Permian brachiopod shells collected from central Thailand, resulting in the establishement of a standard protocol to find shell portions, the original isotopic and chemical compositions of which were not affected by the vital effect and diagenetic alteration. Capitanian (Permian) seawater temperature estimated from the d18O values of such shell portions was 28-35 °C. This value is very similar to that in the equatorial region.

    The sclerochronology and geochemistry of a giant clam Tridacna gigas shell collected from the South Ryukyus, Japan has been investigated for reconstructing paleoinsolation and paleoenvironmental changes during the Middle Holocene. Black and light growth bands were clearly confirmed in the T. gigs shell. Since growth variation in the Tridacna shell showed the seasonality, we inferred that such growth bands are probably daily increments. Oxygen isotope composition of the Tridacna shell showed secular changes in sea surface temperature (SST) during the Middle Holocene. Seasonal amplitude of the SST in the Middle Holocene was close to that of recent SST variation. The oxygen isotope profile indicate long-lasting warming during the Middle Holocene.
