    In this study, the tensile deformation behavior of an electron beam melted Ti−6Al−4V alloy was examined by in situ X-ray diffraction (XRD) line-profile analysis. The as-built Ti−6Al−4V alloy specimen showed a fine acicular microstructure that was produced through the decomposition of the α′-martensite during the post-melt exposure to high temperatures. Using high-energy synchrotron radiation, XRD line-profile analysis was successfully applied for examining the evolution of dislocation structures not only in the α-matrix but also in the nanosized, low-fraction β-phase precipitates located at the interfaces between the α-laths. The results indicated that the dislocation density was initially higher in the β-phase and an increased dislocation density with increasing applied tensile strain was quantitatively captured in each constitutive phase. It can be thus concluded that the EBM Ti−6Al−4V alloy undergoes a cooperative plastic deformation between the constituent phases in the duplex microstructure. These results also suggested that XRD line-profile analysis combined with highenergy synchrotron XRD measurements can be utilized as a powerful tool for characterizing duplex microstructures in titanium alloys.

    Microstructure dependence on mechanical properties were investigated for Ti-17 forged at temperatures between 700 and 850 ˚C with deformation ratio from 33 to 80 %, and solutiontreated at 800˚C for 4 hours and aged at 620 ˚C for 8 hours. The microstructure was observed after solution and aging treatments. The volume fraction and the size of the primary alpha phase was controlled by solution treatment temperature, not forging temperature and deformation ratio. Forging temperature affected the morphology of grain boundary (GB) alpha phase. Deformation ratio affected the grain size and the aspect ratio of the horizontal and vertical grain size of the prior beta phase. The tensile strength was investigated at room temperature, 450, and 600 ˚C. Forging temperature and deformation ratio did not affect the tensile strength because there is no large difference of the volume fraction of the alphaphase. On the other hand, the elongation and the reduction of area increased with increase of the aspect ratio of the prior beta grains; that means, increase of the deformation ratio. Raising of forging temperature also increased elongation and reduction of area due to the film-like GB alphaphase.

    Microstructural conversion mechanisms under hot forging process (at temperatures ranging from 750 °C to 1050 °C and strain rates ranging from 10–3 s–1 to 1 s–1) of a Ti-5Al-2Sn-2Zr-4Mo-4Cr (Ti-17) alloy with a lamellar starting microstructure were experimentally identified in this work. After that, constitutive formulae for predicting the microstructural evolution were established followed by calculation using finite-element (FEM) analysis. In the α phase, a lamellae kinking is the dominant mode in the higher strain rate region and dynamic globularization frequently occurs at higher temperatures. On the other hand, continuous dynamic recrystallization is the dominant mode below the transition temperature, Tβ (880~890 °C) in the β phase. And, at conditions of lower strain rates and higher temperatures, dynamic recovery tends to be more active. For microstructural prediction, a set of constitutive equations modeling the microstructural evolution and forging properties are established by optimizing the experimental data followed by implementation in the DEFORM-3D software package. Herein, microstructural evolution on dynamic globularization process, dynamic recrystallization behavior are predicted according to both approaches of physical model and artificial neural network model followed by FEM simulation. In these calculated results, there is a satisfactory agreement between the experimental and simulated results, indicating that the established series of constitutive models can be used to reliably predict the properties of a Ti-17 alloy after forging.

    The hot deformation behavior and microstructural evolution of Ti–5Al–2Sn–2Zr–4Mo–4Cr (Ti-17) alloy in the β-phase field were examined. Hot compression tests were conducted at temperatures ranging from 700 and 1100 °C and strain rates ranging from 10-3 to 1 s-1. The obtained true stress–true strain curves exhibited steady-state flow behavior at temperatures above the β-transus temperature (Tβ ~ 890 °C). The microstructural observations suggested that the dynamic recovery process represents a dominant mechanism for the β-phase of the alloy. In contrast, the flow softening was identified at 700 °C at a strain rate of 10–3 s–1. The formation of fine acicular α microstructures was noticed in such a deformation condition, indicating that dynamic phase transformation can occur in the metastable β-phase during hot deformation. Such a dynamic phase transformation also occurred preferentially at the initial β-grain boundaries as well as sub-boundaries that created within the βmatrix via dynamic recovery. The β-processing conditions were also examined by constructing processing maps based on the dynamic materials model (DMM).

    To obtain an intrinsic stress-strain response with no effects on stress due to the friction between the sample and the anvils or on the temperature increase due to adiabatic heating, a method of compensating for a stress-strain response was proposed. Using the stress-strain response that was compensated for, a processing map, consisting of both power dissipation efficiency and flow instability map, was constructed. On the basis of our observations using EBSD, it was found that the processing map after the compensation can be effectively used to well predict the optimum hot forging conditions.

    A trial on an artificial hip joint stem made of Ni-free Co-29Cr-6Mo alloy was conducted by an isothermal hot semiclosed die forging method. The hot forging conditions (i.e., sample dimensions, forging temperature and stroke-speed) were determined by process simulation using &ldquo;DEFORM-3D&rdquo; based on FEM. A prototype stem with a shape designed using a FEM simulator was successfully obtained without surface defects or flaws under the predetermined forging conditions. The microstructure of the obtained stem consisted of mainly the &epsilon; (H.C.P.) phase as well as the minor &gamma; (F.C.C.) and &sigma;(CoCr:P42/mnm) phases. In addition, inhomogeneous distributions of the &sigma; phase and grain size could be observed in the microstructure of the stem, resulting from the inhomogeneous distributions of effective strain rate, effective strain and effective stress induced in the stem during the forging process. Thus, Vickers hardness exhibited marked scattering, depending on the position of the stem.

    This review described our recent results on the synchrotron X-ray and neutron diffraction-based microstructural characterizations for α + β duplex titanium alloys, with a particular focus on additively manufactured (AM) Ti−6Al−4V alloys. The use of synchrotron radiation enables dislocation structure analysis, which utilizes convolutional multiple whole profile (CMWP) fitting, not only for the α-matrix but also for the fine β-phase in the acicular microstructures via line profile analysis. Moreover, we employed Rietveld texture analysis and successfully determine the textural evolution upon multiple phase transformations during electron beam powder bed fusion. These techniques revealed novel understandings on the phase transformation and resulting microstructural evolution in AM processes and can be applied for other duplex titanium alloys as well as plastic deformation analysis based on in-situ measurements upon external loading. The advantages and limitations of the employed techniques are also discussed.

    Structural materials that are used in environmental and energy applications are expected to have various properties, such as strength at both room and elevated temperatures, corrosion and wear resistance, and fatigue strength, simultaneously. Additive manufacturing (AM), an emerging material processing technology, is highly promising for the development of novel materials by utilizing the unique thermal history that cannot be achieved in conventional manufacturing. In this review, we focus on high entropy alloys (HEAs), which generally consist of multiple principal elements in (near) equimolar ratios, and their intersection with AM technologies. The microstructural evolution during electron beam powder bed fusion and its effects on the mechanical and corrosion properties are summarized based on the results for an equimolar AlCoCrFeNi HEA. It was demonstrated that in addition to nonequilibrium solidification in a highly confined melt pool, the subsequent solid-state phase transformation and associated solute partitioning between the constituent phases during the in-process high-temperature exposure play an important role in the significant improvement of the alloy performance. Consequently, an excellent combination of mechanical properties and corrosion resistance, which surpasses that obtained in the conventional casting, was achieved. This obtained knowledge indicates the importance of optimizing not only the solidification behavior but also the entire thermal history (including post-processing), broadening the alloy design space, and providing opportunities for developing high-performance alloys for harsh environments.

This alloy's hardness, scratch resistance, and light weight will be merits when used for watch exteriors. However, the alloy has poor plasticity and difficulty in hot forging. These shortcomings must be overcome to satisfy the high aesthetic demand for watch exteriors. This paper reports optimum forging conditions and process design guidelines obtained by forging simulation. The simulation enabled us to evaluate the forging processes and allowed us to fabricate the fine features of watch exteriors.</p>

    Co - Cr - Mo alloy has excellent corrosion resistance and abrasion resistance, and it is widely used as a biomaterial such as an artificial hip joint.     High entropy alloys (HEAs) are defined as the alloys with five or more elements with atomic concentration between 5 and 35%. It has been reported that many of HEAs have superior properties, such as high strength, high temperature strength, and good corrosion resistance. However, it is difficult to fabricate HEAs with conventional manufacturing routes, including forging and rolling. Therefore, we experimented in applying electron beam melting (EBM) which is known as a 3D printer for metallic materials to the fabrication of HEAs. We succeeded in producing equiatomic AlCoCrFeNi HEAs by EBM and investigated the microstructure and mechanical properties. As a result, plastic deformability of EBM specimen was much higher than that of the conventional casting specimen due to the constituting fine grains and the formation of ductile secondary phase. On the other hand, it was confirmed that Vickers hardness was varied depending on the product&rsquo;s build height in EBM process.

    The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of carbon concentration on microstructures and tensile properties of Co-33Cr-9W-0.34N-(0.01-0.31)C (mass%) cast alloys. The microstructures of the alloys primarily consisted of the γ (fcc) phase. The amount of carbide precipitates at the interdendritic region increased with increasing carbon concentration. Accordingly, the alloys exhibited higher yield stress (>600 MPa) than conventional Co-Cr dental cast alloys. On the other hand, elongation-to-failure showed a maximum (〜50%) at carbon concentrations of 〜0.1 mass%. The results of the current study can aid in the design of high-strength Co-Cr-based dental cast alloys.

    The purpose of this study was to experimentally clarify the effects of alloying elements and thermomechanical processing on the microstructural evolution and tribocorrosion behavior of Cu-added/carbide-strengthened martensitic steels. In addition to electron microscopy techniques, microstructural analysis using neutron diffraction was performed, and with the aid of quantitative microstructural information, we obtained guidelines for improving the mechanical properties, corrosion resistance, and tribocorrosion characteristics simultaneously, and optimized the manufacturing process. Moreover, we discovered the process-microstructure-property relationship and its underlying mechanisms, which are important for fundamental studies as well as for their practical applications.

    GB cracks in difficult-to-weld superalloys made with PBF-EB are affected by the interaction of multiple factors, including mechanical and compositional effects. This study applied a machine learning-based method to optimize the high-dimensional PBF-EB parameter space of lloy713ELC. It was shown that the optimized sample crack tendency can be ranked using the quasi-total plastic strain index (QTPSI) defined and calculated by thermomechanical analysis. By comparison with the weldable superalloy Alloy 718, the non-weldability is largely due to its thermal expansion effect. The combination of this thermal expansion effect, liquefaction effect and strain aging cracking effect revealed the essential cause of the non-weldability of Alloy 713ELC.

    We have investigated the factors for controlling the microstructures, that determine the material property, in the parts built by powder bed fusion (PBF) type additive manufacturing (AM), which is the major metal 3D printers (3DP). Beam scanning tests, microstructure observation, process monitoring, and numerical simulations revealed the essentials of microstructure formation in PBF. For instance, the crystal grain structure of the built parts is found to be modified variously from a highly oriented single crystal-like ones to isotropic polycrystals by appropriate combinations of beam power, scanning speed, and the scanning line intervals of electron beam or laser beam for fusing metal powder. Very fine cellular crystals are formed owing to the very high cooling rate. The correlation between the unique solidification conditions and the microstructures has been found to be greatly affected by the fluid flow along solid-liquid interface depending on the physical properties of the alloys.

    In this study, the relationship between the dislocation structures in the metastable parent phase and subsequent deformation-induced martensitic transformation (DIMT) was examined in several structural alloys, such as biomedical Co-Cr-Mo alloys, titanium alloys, and high entropy alloys. It was demonstrated that introducing parent phase’s dislocations accelerated or retarded the γ (fcc) → ε (hcp) DIMT, depending on the alloy composition. The obtained results are helpful for designing novel structual alloys with an enhanced combination of strength and ductility.

    In this study, we present a novel concept for strengthening biomedical Co-Cr alloys by introducing high density of lattice defects. A high tensile/fatigue strength was obtained in Co-Cr-Mo alloy specimens prepared with multipass hot rolling. Using X-ray diffraction line profile analysis, we demonstrated that the overall strengthening achieved in the proposed process cannot be explained by considering grain refinement and dislocation densities and revealed a significant contribution of stacking faults in the developed alloys.

    まず、昨年度透過電子顕微鏡を用いて見出したナノ窒化物について、X線小角散乱実験によるサイズおよび数密度を定量評価のための基礎検討を行った。本合金系において初めての小角散乱実験であったが、ラボX線回折装置では蛍光X線の影響が強く、正確な測定値を求めることが困難であることがわかった。この点については中性子小角散乱に手法を変えることで解決可能と考えられ、平成27年度にJ-PARCのiMATERIAビームラインにおいて測定を行う予定である。 さらに、昨年度調査を行った引張特性のN添加量依存性については、今年度は高Cr組成とし、N含有量を高く設定したCo-Cr基合金を作製し、同様の検討を行った。なお、本合金は熱間加工が困難であるため歯科鋳造合金としての実用化が検討されており、本研究でも鋳造材での評価を行った。Cr添加量の増加に伴い、合金化可能なN添加量の増加も増加し、その結果、鋳造材でありながら50%近い引張伸びを示すことがわかった。また、この合金にさらにCを添加することで、NおよびCの複合添加効果により十分な延性を維持したまま鍛造材と同等の鋳造材としては極めて高い強度が得られることを見出した。 上記の研究成果について、アメリカで行われた国際会議(Materials Science and Technology 2014およびTMS 2015、いずれもアメリカ鉱物金属材料学会が主催)において口頭発表および関連するポスター発表を行った。また、日本金属学会講演大会および日本歯科理工学会で口頭発表を行うとともに、国際誌に論文を投稿した。
