<p>In this study, we used topic modeling based on latent Dirichlet allocation with about 60,000 datasets collected over nine years at a university to analyze the free descriptions obtained through course evaluation questionnaires, which have been considered to be difficult to utilize because of various limitations including their manual classif ication. We labeled the 170 extracted topics according to a series of steps and verif ied the validity of the labels. The results conf irmed that the labels had an adequate level of validity, demonstrating that classif ication via topic modeling is suitable for human senses from a holistic viewpoint. In this analysis, we also linked free descriptions with information on courses and visualized information using cross-tabulation to see the proportion of topics included in each of the courses and characteristics of the topic distribution in each course. This analysis method can be applied in the f ields of institutional research and learning analysis in future studies.</p><p></p>

<p>This study aimed to analyze nine years' worth of sixty thousand free descriptions of course evaluation questionnaires, which originally appeared to be overly difficult to handle in terms of extracting information that had been administered to a certain University Students using a topic model based on Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA). We extracted 170 topics and labeled them based on a series of steps, and then checked the validity. Consequently, an adequate level of validity was observed, revealing a comprehensible classification by topic model that fit the human senses. This study further offered analyses linking information about the group of courses to which each free description belonged, and visualized the ratio of topics in each course group, or features of topic distribution of each course group compared to the entire spectrum using cross tabulation. Such analyses are expected to be applied in the fields of Institutional Research (IR) and Learning Analytics (LA) in future studies.</p>

<p>We evaluated the effects of a nutrition education program using HyperMirror, a video-mediated communication system, on the acquisition of appropriate food and dietary choice skills among Japanese and Thai schoolchildren, and the applicability of HyperMirror for a nutrition education program. HyperMirror uses composite video images and mirrored self-images to make geographically remote individuals feel as if they are in the same room.</p><p>The nutrition program, assessed using a pre-post study design, was conducted in 2006 (wherein the target was food choices based on food groups) and 2007 (wherein the target was planning a well-balanced breakfast). Periodic newsletters were distributed between the yearly sessions to ensure knowledge retention. Subjects were students (aged 9-10 years in 2006) from urban areas of Japan (n=70) and Thailand (n=21) who participated in both the lectures in 2006 and 2007.</p><p>The study environment was evaluated after every year's distance lecture.</p><p>We also assessed program impact in terms of changes in nutritional knowledge, attitudes and behaviors towards appropriate food and dietary choice. The following behavioral objectives were assessed; (1) making appropriate diet choices, (2) understanding and being interested in foreign dietary/food cultures, and (3) being concerned about their own nutrition after three weeks of distance learning in 2007.</p><p>The mean study environment scores were high overall for both sessions (3.8 for Japanese students, 4.4 for Thai), and changes in nutritional knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors were observed. Over 50% of Japanese and Thai students agreed on behavioral objective (1), while agreement rates for behavioral objectives (2) and (3) were greater among Thai than among Japanese students, partly because the periodical newsletters helped maintain students' learning interest and retention. Our study showed that a distance-learning nutritional education program using HyperMirror effectively induced behavioral channges and improved knowledge of food culture. We also confirmed HyperMirror's applicability to such programs.</p>

This research reported on a trial practice of a flipped jigsaw collaborative learning (flipped jigsaw) of English as a foreign language (EFL) at a university in Japan. Its design, preparation, implementation, and overall evaluation were introduced. Individual works set as outside-class activities adopted a flipped classroom approach to jigsaw collaborative learning to free more class time for collaborative learning. The EFL students needed more opportunities to practice their target language with quality interactions among other students and teachers. The flipped jigsaw was designed to increase learners&#039; quality interactions and reach their higher cognitive goals. Three video clips were selected for expert group learning, and a report with four open-ended questions was assigned to each expert group as a pre-expert group discussion activity. The expert group discussion was conducted face-to-face in a classroom, and the jigsaw group discussion was held in an online chat format. The overall evaluation based on students&#039; perceptions of the flipped jigsaw (Class A: N = 89, Class B: N = 74) indicated that they might think that they were practicing English more than in the usual computer-assisted language learning activities. Interest in the final topic, expectation to improve their English, and satisfaction scored over 3 points in a 6-point Likert questionnaire. The results showed slightly positive attitudes toward the flipped jigsaw, regardless of the registered classes.

The study investigated the contents of the following two latest statements to examine the media use of infants: (1) "Media Use by Children Younger Than 2 Years."(American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) , November, 2011.), (2) "Technology and Interactive Media as Tools in Early Childhood Programs Serving Children from Birth through Age 8."(National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC), January, 2012). As a result, the AAP considered on the media use of infants from the viewpoints of health and development. In addition, the adverse effects of the background media on children were pointed out. On the other hand, various conditions under which teachers can use the media for infants effectively were introduced by NAEYC. In addition, it was insisted on the needs to raise infants' digital citizenship. Both organizations commonly shared the idea that the infants who are younger than two years old should not use the media. Therefore, it seems was desirable to clarify what occurs through the interactive learning activities with the media in order to think about a future education environment.

This study investigated learners of English as a foreign language (EFL) who engaged in a group discussion and saw how their discussion was affected by a preceding conversation with a chatbot. The chatbot was designed to reflect the Socratic inquiry method based on Eliza, a computer program developed for psychotherapy. Two case studies were conducted, and 130 university students (Case 1: n=63; Case 2: n=67) were divided into experimental and control groups and observed. Case 1 served as the pilot study and focused on the effects of a chatbot conversation on the discussion; the critical thinking, satisfaction, and number of conversations in experimental and control groups were analyzed. Case 2 examined the difference in critical thinking pre- and post-discussion in both groups. Case 1 showed that a preceding conversation with a chatbot might lead to an increase in the number of contributions that students made to conversations and could increase the number of conversations in which the students participated. Case 2 results showed that pre-discussion with a chatbot could increase the students&rsquo; awareness of critical thinking and enable them to form inquiring mindsets.

The objective of this study is to determine to what degree the objectives of a distance learning class were achieved, through a quantitative analysis of data gathered from a questionnaire. The questionnaire consisted of three main sections: overseas orientation, identity, and attitude as a global human resource. Analyses indicated that members of the class initially had higher levels of overseas orientation than non-members, whereas there were no significant differences on the other sections. Conversely, pretest-posttest comparisons revealed that the response to"I want to live overseas in the future,"which is a subordinate item of overseas orientation showed improvement as the class progressed. Additionally, psychosocial identity and some items of attitude as a global human resource like "I should have endurance," also showed improvement. As these improvements were consistent with the objectives of the class, this suggests that the class was somewhat effective. Furthermore, regression analyses indicated that improvements in psychosocial identity and attitudes towards making judgments objectively were associated with improvements in overseas orientation. An analyses of the subordinate items of the overseas orientation section also revealed that improvements in psychosocial identity were associated with improvements in the students'desire to live or work overseas, whereas it had no significant relevance to improvements in their desire to study abroad.

This research aims to develop collaborative language learning systems based on social and cognitive presence for learning settings out of class, and evaluate their effects on learning attitude and performance. The main purpose of this system is focusing on the building of a learning community, therefore the Community of Inquiry (CoI) framework suggested by Garrison, Anderson, and Archer (2000) was considered to design this system. This system “C4” (spelled out as C quad) consists of three functions: chatbot, constitutive chat, and contribution visualization for the enhancement of social and cognitive presence. In this paper, we explain system design and architecture, and discuss future work.

The purposes of this preliminary study are (1) to investigate possible factors for English as a foreign language (EFL) learners&#039; behavior and attitudes towards computer-supported collaborative learning focusing on online discussion. Comment numbers, satisfaction and perceived group contributions on two online discussions of 58 EFL students were analyzed with multiple regression correlation, in relation with items of six inventories; (a) social skill (Kikuchi, 2007), (b) Self-efficacy for English learning with CSCL based on Matsunuma (2006), (c) English learning strategy (Kubo, 1999), (d) Social presence and cognitive presence with text-chat developed based on Gunawardena &amp; Zittle (1997), (e) Felder-Soloman Index of Learning Style (ILS) (Felder &amp; Silverman, 1988), and (f) researcher-developed questionnaire for a discussion task. The results show that 11 items collectively account for 76.2% of the comment number variance (F(11,46)=13.39, p&lt;.01), 15 items and &quot;sequencer type score of learning style significantly explain 89.2% of the learners&#039; satisfaction (F(16, 41)=21.12, p&lt;.01), and 2 items and &quot;sequential&quot; type score of learning style describe 32.8% of the learners&#039; perceived contribution (F(3, 54)=8.80, p&lt;.01). There are three overlapped items and one learning style type for all prediction equations. It indicates that 25 items and 11 items for sequential/global type in the learning style types may be utilized to predict EFL learners&#039; behavior and attitudes towards online discussion.

Student evaluation of teaching would be fruitful only when it leads to an enhancement in teaching. Using basic statistics, classifications and regression trees to measure student satisfaction, and association rules to mine data and text, we develop an effective feedback system to analyze student evaluations and provide their results to concerned faculties. The system provides faculties with information they may use for further improvement of their teaching. An opinion survey conducted among the faculties who used the feedback system revealed that, by and large, the system was perceived to be useful towards class improvement. Moreover, the function employing the association rule for free descriptions was considered to be an effective tool for enhancing education. The binary tree analysis, on the other hand, did not receive a high appraisal on account of the presentation of the result and the fact that the teachers were not familiar with the concept. Given that the evaluation questions addressing visibility and understandability were scored relatively lower, the system will be improved in the near future through a modification to its interface.

This research analyzed installation situation of kindergarten websites, and is based on a complete enumeration of 12,804 kindergartens in Japan. With 669 randomly extracted websites, the research analyzed its contents such as service for parents, information disclosure, and utilization of websites for kindergarten affairs. Results were as follow: (1) a difference in the rate of website installation was found in settings of kindergartens (between urban and suburban) and also in a way kindergartens are managed (between public and private); and (2) contents analysis revealed diversification of website contents and characteristics of kindergartens with rich website contents (such as management of two-way communication like blogs and e-mail form and frequency of website updates). The research concludes by pointing out future challenges in utilizing ICT in kindergartens: establishing websites, providing trainings to kindergarten teachers in using ICT, and disseminating advantages of utilizing ICT in kindergarten affairs.

Today, it is essential to consider what added values our university can provide to its alumni through comprehensive educational curriculums in liberal arts and specialized fields. That is, it is imminently necessary to critically review our university's education from the perspective of educational and learning results. A way to examine learning outcomes directly is to get feedback from our alumni about what they have learned from the university's curriculums. The Institute for Higher Education Research and Practice surveyed alumni regarding their views during academic year 2006. The environment surrounding the university's education, and our university itself, have been changing since that time and it is necessary to check the results of our educational curriculums at regular intervals to ensure future improvement. This study seeks to reexamine the role our general education curriculums in all faculties have played by obtaining and analyzing our alumni's feedback to consider how to provide education in the future.

We developed a feedback system of leaning strategies based on models created by using data mining technology which is applied to the data obtained from high school students. After trial use of this system, we evaluated the system from the point of view as follows. a.Validity of the models. b.The effectiveness of metaphors built into the system. c.Subjective evaluation from users. The results were as indicated below. (a) Validity of the models was verified, because the difference of academic ability estimated from the models was observed in the data obtained from monitor test. (b) The signal metaphor which represents the achievement levels of learning strategies was turned out to be effective, because the length of the time spent to read the explanation of leaning strategies differed according to the color of signal, while the direct road metaphor which represents the order of learning strategies was understood by nearly half of the students. (c) Some users insisted the animations used in the system were too long, but the evaluation as a whole system was favorable.

This study aims at examining what kind of indexes are applicable to grasp learners' condition of participation or tendency of learners' statement on BBS. Twelve indexes for grasping learners' condition of participation, and three indexes for grasping tendency of learners' statement are calculated automatically with a system we developed and displayed on the web browser. We calculated these indexes based on a log data of an e-learning class, and investigated their validity through questionnaire and interview. The result shows that the diversity of posted words is relatively appropriate to grasp learners' condition of participation, because it had strong correlation with assessment of learners' condition of participation by estimators who grasp the communication on BBS well. It is also implied that indexes of tendency of learners' statement are available to take a general view of discussion on BBS.

We developed a communication system to support Family School Relationship via Internet. This system was tested along three classes in a kindergarten. About 70% of the parents used it and over 2500 messages were exchanged during the evaluation period of over two months and a half. Through the analysis of the exchanged messages and the results obtained from questionnaires, we can affirm that the herein described system allowed parents and teachers to share information and images related to children. Such aspect is essential to enhance the continuity between kindergarten and home.

We investigated how the application "ASCA", which was developed with the aim of using tablets as a support tool for early childhood care and education, is used in kindergarten/nursery school. As a result, 1)Nursery teachers realized that it was effective not only for the use of tablets for children during care/education, but also for the use by nursery teachers in the assessment of childhood care and education. 2)Although it was used only for the purpose of being used by nursery teachers for assessment, they came to the idea that children can use tablets together to deepen their care/education assessment. We have concluded that it is important that we have two points of view: 1)the apps may be developed to use for not only children and also nursery teacher together in kindergarten/nursery school, 2) tablets (or apps) may use to not only visualize the learning of children and also use to support the assessment for nursery teachers.

In this study, the IR system that is useful for university faculty and staff in supporting students has been investigated. We developed an early alert system, or ‘Risk Detector’ (hereafter RD), to identify at-risk students before their potential risks become aware and to prevent the students from dropouts and holdovers. RD was expected to pinpoint high risk students with the machine learning method called Soft Margin Support Vector Machine and to indicate a list of metrics of each student as well as the prediction of dropout. After feeding actual students’ data into the RD, its accuracy rate of prediction was 93%, which meant it provided highly reliable results of discriminant analysis and reasonable precision. In addition, RD was recognized trustworthy by faculty members who assessed it. On the contrary, poor UI and intelligibility of each value on RD were pointed out and discussed as future issues.

In this study, we developed an e-Learning system of the disaster prevention education for lower grade elementary school students. The Necessity of this system was as follows. In conventional teaching policy of Japan, for example, if an earthquake or a fire occurred, school children would be trained to wait for their teachers’ instructions and to evacuate by following the teachers’ guidance. However, if an earthquake happens at recess, students scatter and take a break in and out of school buildings and, therefore, it is extremely difficult, if not impossible, for them to follow their teachers’ directions. As a result, it is necessary to develop an evacuation strategy, especially for schoolchildren who are left inside the school buildings and cannot receive teachers’ directions face to face. The result of actual evacuation drills were successful. All of lower grade elementary school students could evacuate smoothly without doing wrong action.

In this study, We tested the difference of 2D and 3D in distance education environment from three points of view as follows: Cognition of the course in terms of course evaluation, Cognition of the video in terms of stereoscopic effect, realistic sensation, or feeling of fatigue, and Cognition of Social Presence. As a result, it was revealed that 3D video offered stereoscopic effect, and students felt realistic sensation to the class or felt familiarity to the teacher. However, 3D video inferior to 2D in terms of eye-friendliness, because students felt uncomfortable and tiered while watching 3D video. There was no difference between 2D an 3D in terms of course evaluation such as understandability, satisfaction, and way of teaching. There was no difference concerning Social Presence either.

This study aims to develop online English learning system with the functions of Aptitude Treatment Interaction(ATI), social support, and cognitive support and evaluate this system. For ATI, we developed collaborative filtering system for the recommendation. In analysis phase, we considered the effects of collaborative filtering as ATI support technology on online English learning system through the analysis of the practice data of this system. For social support and cognitive learning function, we developed the collaborative system with the consideration of "split-little-pond" effect."Split-little-pond" effect is one of academic self-concept. Academic self-concept is self-knowledge or self-concept about academic skill or ability. Academic self-concept is formed negatively or positively by social comparison such as the comparison with test score of their classmates."Split-little-pond" effect means academic self-concept formed by social comparison mentioned above. This system allows learners to use cognitive learning strategies such as marking and annotation. The results show that collaborative filtering seems to have direct effect on learning. However, collaborative filtering has positive effect on learner's understanding of learning strategies by the recommendation based on learner's interest in the content of English reading. For social and cognitive support, this system seems to be effective on the promotion of the use of cognitive learning strategies, but the significant effect on social support was not confirmed in this study.

I examined (1) the concrete factor that affects the satisfaction to and understanding of the lecture, and (2) the relationship between items included in the questionnaire and keywords included in the free description, utilizing the data collected as the course evaluation questionnaire at Osaka University. As a result, it became clear that Speaking skill of the lecturer or difficulty level of the lecture etc. would affect the satisfaction and understanding level of the lecture. In addition, I found that some keywords did not represent the literal meaning : When the keyword "rapid" was included in the free description, learners tended to feel that the lecture was "difficult".

This research focused on using ICT to create tools to facilitate educational international exchanges combining the use of "HyperMirror," a video-conferencing system that encourages physical interactions due to an increased sense of shared presence, and international television, which was used to facilitate learning about partner schools. "HyperMirror" superimposes a mirror-image of one's own video over the video of a remote location and allows participants to perform joint physical activities such as pointing and shaking hands. During this research, digital satellite phones and the Internet were used to connect grade schools, middle schools, and high schools from Afghanistan, Kenya (Masai), Mongolia, Thailand, the United States, and Japan for international exchanges. Osaka University connected with educators at American universities, American educational conferences, and instructional seminars held around Japan. Web sites to support these educational exchange projects were created using Wiki and Moodle software along with separate web sites to facilitate communication among participating educators. Schools were outfitted with equipment to allow viewing of international satellite television broadcasts. In addition, small delays in video transmission and high-definition "HyperMirror" were studied. Ways to better facilitate "HyperMirror" activities and the effects of the "HyperMirror" environment on participants' psychological states were studied. Tests showed that participants started to notice video delays of 100 milliseconds in their own video feed and 160 milliseconds for the remote location's video feed. When video delays reached 260 milliseconds, the feeling of presence in a single room normally created by the "HyperMirror" system was lost. "HyperMirror" and traditional video-conferencing experiences were compared and the words most commonly used to describe things during video-conferences were recorded. In the "HyperMirror" video-conferences, participants tended to use less complicated descriptions since they could point to things and use simple phrases such as "this......" to describe things in their shared environment.
