    The present study analysed archaeological pottery in the early Yayoi period of the prehistoric Japanese archipelago, i.e. Ongagawa style pottery, which has been traditionally regarded as an indicator of the spread of rice farming in the archipelago. To this end, we quantified the two- and three-dimensional data of outlines and surfaces of the pottery, based on elliptic Fourier and spherical harmonics analyses, respectively. The results show morphological variation is spatially and temporally structured, consistent with an archaeological view that the pottery style spread via two routes (the Japan Sea route and Setouchi route) with the potential of more complex interactions between the transmission routes. The present study exemplifies a useful quantitative method to theorize cultural evolutionary trajectories of archaeological remains.

    Abstract This study examines the morphological variations within and between regional populations via geometric morphometrics of larger samples of three-dimensional data of Jōmon human crania (N= 363, including 146 females, 215 males and two unknown-sex individuals) from 97 sites to investigate the population interactions in the period, which Japanese anthropologists and archaeologists have extensively discussed. The results show that morphological variations are more pronounced within individual populations especially in the principal component one, relating to the facial width, degree of prognathism, and location of occipital areas, in contrast to the relatively smaller variations observed between different phases and geographical regions. This observation is consistent with the possibility that the population interactions of the Jōmon people had been widespread and continuous, and which has an important implication for their resilience against severe climate changes at that time: The relative stability of the Jōmon society might be sustained by their frequent interactions with various populations, as suggested by insights from relevant archaeological, ethnographic, and genetic research.

    The present study collected a larger set of three-dimensional data on human crania from the Kofun period (as well as from previous periods, i.e., the Jomon and Yayoi periods) in the Japanese archipelago (AD 250 to around 700) than previous studies. Three-dimensional geometric morphometrics were employed to investigate human migration patterns in finer-grained phases. These results are consistent with those of previous studies, although some new patterns were discovered. These patterns were interpreted in terms of demic diffusion, archaeological findings, and historical evidence. In particular, the present results suggest the presence of a gradual geological cline throughout the Kofun period, although the middle period did not display such a cline. This discrepancy might reflect social changes in the middle Kofun period, such as the construction of keyhole-shaped mounds in the peripheral regions. The present study implies that a broader investigation with a larger sample of human crania is essential to elucidating macro-level cultural evolutionary processes.

    Abstract The importance of ending poverty and reducing economic inequality has been explicitly recognized globally. Climate extremes are a critical global risk and can lead to economic damages, but empirical evidence of their effects on economic inequality is limited. Here, we focus on Mongolian pastoralism, which has a coupled socio-ecological system, to examine the trend of economic inequality among herders following a climate extreme event. Mongolia experienced a winter disaster in 2009 that caused a mortality of about 20% of the total number of livestock across the country. We used a long-term livestock panel dataset at the household level (n = 787) during 2004–2013 to examine changes in the economic distribution after the disaster. Economic inequality increased after the disaster (Gini coefficient increased from 0.46 to 0.61), and the increased level of inequality remained 4 years after the disaster. A decomposition of the inequality analysis showed that within-group inequality largely contributed to the greater total inequality, and household groups with a small number of livestock had the largest increase in inequality. Moreover, household groups that did not recover their livestock number had a higher loss rate of livestock during the disaster than household groups that did recover. Although the number of total livestock in the study area did recover after 4 years, we empirically showed that inequality among herders increased after the disaster. This result suggests that economic distributions are critical when examining the socio-economic impacts of climate extremes. We also suggest that preparing for disasters during normal years to alleviate loss of livestock during a disaster, especially for households with a small number of livestock, is a critical way to reduce poverty in the face of more frequent climate extremes.

    The present study examines the 3-dimensional data of human crania from the Yayoi period (800 BC to AD 250) of the Japanese archipelago by geometric morphometrics to investigate demic diffusion patterns. This is the first study on the Yayoi crania using their 3D data and geometric morphometrics with a much larger number of skeletal remains outside of the Kyushu regions than previous studies. The comparative results between the Jōmon and Yayoi samples show that the Yayoi people not only in the eastern parts but also in the western parts of the archipelago are significantly different from the final Jōmon people and the Yayoi people were not strongly affected by the Jōmon people. A relatively gradual geological cline is also found among the Yayoi population, suggesting that the immigrants from the continental East Asia moved from the western parts to the eastern parts of the archipelago though the causes of the morphological changes are unclear.

    SfM/MVS photogrammetry has received increasing attention due to its convenience, broadening the range of its applications into archaeology and anthropology. Because the accuracy of SfM/MVS depends on photography, one important issue is that incorrect or low-density point clouds are found in 3D models due to poor overlapping between images. A systematic way of taking photographs solve these problems, though it has not been well established and the accuracy has not been examined either, with some exceptions. The present study aims to (i) develop an efficient method for recording pottery using an automated turntable and (ii) assess its accuracy through a comparison with 3D models made by laser scanning. We recorded relatively simple pottery manufactured by prehistoric farmers in the Japanese archipelago using SfM/MVS photogrammetry and laser scanning. Further, by measuring the Hausdorff distance between 3D models made using these two methods, we show that their difference is negligibly small, suggesting that our method is sufficiently accurate to record pottery.

    The origins and consequences of warfare or large-scale intergroup violence have been subject of long debate. Based on exhaustive surveys of skeletal remains for prehistoric hunter-gatherers and agriculturists in Japan, the present study examines levels of inferred violence and their implications for two evolutionary models, which ground warfare in parochial altruism versus subsistence. The former assumes that frequent warfare played an important role in the evolution of altruism, while the latter sees warfare as promoted by social changes induced by agriculture. Our results are inconsistent with the parochial altruism model but consistent with the subsistence model, although the mortality values attributable to violence between hunter-gatherers and agriculturists were comparable.

    本申請課題の目的は、人間の社会構造における多様性の発生要因および発生過程を、とくに格差に注目して長期的スケールで説明可能なモデルを構築することである。本年度は、ナミビアおよびモンゴルでのフィールド調査を予定していたが、新型コロナウイルス感染症流行のため再度、実施を延期することとなった。その代替として、昨年度に引き続き、すでに入手済みのモンゴルにおける家畜頭数推移の調査データを分析した。分析により、モンゴルにおいて2009-2010の雪害の後、ジニ係数で測定した家畜所有の不平等が拡大したこと、家畜数の少ない世帯間での不平等がとくに顕著であったこと、災害で家畜を多く失った世帯ほど回復が困難となることなどを明らかにした。この研究は学会で報告され、国際誌への投稿を準備中である。また、雪害における格差拡大のメカニズムについては、個体群動態におけるアリー効果に着目した数理モデルを提案し、データを分析した。その結果については別個、学会にて報告し、国際誌への投稿を予定している。数理モデル構築については、ナミビアとモンゴルの事例を包括的に説明可能な一般性の高いモデルの作成を試みている。昨年に引き続き、牧畜と農耕という2つの生業への分散的投資の割合を戦略としてモデル化し、さらに環境変動を加味した場合に、いかなる戦略が均衡戦略となり、その下で財産の不平等の程度がどのようになるかを検討した。

    研究代表者の野口は、これまでの建築模型の分析・考察を継続し、自身がデザイン・制作した建築模型をシャルジャ首長国の展覧会において展示・発表した。また、研究の総括に向けて成果物のまとめ方についての検討をした。山口睦（以下研究分担者）は、ソリッドモデル制作サークルを対象として航空模型の製作について調査を行った。田村は、3Dプリンタで模型を制作するためもととなる対象の3次元計測についての分析と考察をし、考古遺物の3次元計測に関する論文を出版した。安田は、当研究会で博物図譜における「写し」の行為について報告した。また九州国立博物館の展覧会より、日本美術史における自然物の模型や模写の歴史的変遷を調査した。今石は、引き続き日本の年中行事に用いられるツクリモノについての事例収集および分析を行った。大塚は、前年度の分析をさらにすすめ、複製技術によってもたらされた供物しての紙銭は、財貨の象徴としてだけではなく、消滅可能性という記号としての働きを有していることを明らかにした。妙木は、これまでの調査・研究を継続し、徳島の妖怪伝承における見えないものの可視化をテーマにした研究発表を行うとともに、徳島県三好市の「かかしの里」における日常生活の再現としてのかかしの調査を行った。高山は、前年度に引き続き労働模範の事例を集め、社会主義国における労働模範の顕彰について考察した。山口未花子は、動物をどのように表すのか、それはなぜなのかという点について、専門家との対話を通じて見識を深めた。また自身の狩猟実践のなかで皮、毛皮の利用について、教育や制作への応用がどのように可能かを検討した。 <BR> 以上の各自の研究活動を踏まえ、第1回研究会（オンライン、2021年9月13日）で山口未花子・妙木・安田による研究発表、第2回研究会（オンライン、2022年3月18日）で山口睦による研究発表を行った。

    本研究は、大学の博物館や地域資料を扱う博物館の国内外の事例を調査し、空間と展示のデザインという視点を織り込みながら、地域資料の展示公開モデルを探ることを目的としている。 ただし、2020年度はコロナ禍と直面したために、予定していた海外調査はすべて中止とし、国内調査もわずかに実施したのみとなった。代わりに力を入れたのは、研究者、学芸員、デザイナーらとの研究会を数多く開催することだった。具体的には、地方の学芸員（野林厚志、小金沢智）、アーカイブ研究者（齋藤歩）、美術・建築の批評家（暮沢剛巳、謝宗哲）、展示研究者（三宅拓也、菊地尊也）、展示デザイナー、（木下史青、吉野博ら）、地域資料を活用するアーティスト（伊達伸明、上田假奈代）との研究会を開催し、レクチャーの後に討議や意見交換を行った。もっとも、コロナ禍のため、東北大に招聘しての対面での実施は難しく、ほとんどの回はオンラインによって実施した。様々な視点から、資料を効果的に活用する知見を数多く得ることができた。 なお、一時的にコロナ禍が落ついたタイミングでのみ、研究メンバーは現地調査を実施した。八戸市ではいくつかの文化施設や開館予定の美術館、十和田市では現代美術館を訪問し、学芸員や市の担当者からヒアリングを行うことができた。 実践的なプロジェクトとしては、以下のものを実施した。仙台藝術舎CREEKと協同し、地元のアーティストが大学の資料に触発されて作品をつくり、それらを紹介する企画として、「宛先のない作用 #０：ダイガクにねむるモノにまつわるゲイジュツ」展（2020年10月1日-12日）を仙台フォーラスの7階において開催した。また大学の研究者へのヒアリングを抜粋したテキスト、土器の3Dプリントによる複製なども、あわせて展示することで、大学博物館、地域資料、 アートの相乗効果を生みだした。

    本研究課題では、(1) 約13-2万年前のユーラシア大陸の広域にわたる石器製作技術のデータの定量的解析と、(2) 解析によって得られたパターンを生み出したプロセスの検討や方法論の妥当性を確認するためのシミュレーションをおこなった。（1）のデータ解析において、石器製作技術のデータ化には、Graham Clarkeが提唱し、John Sheaが拡張した石器製作技術の分類である「モード」を、さらにPaleoAsiaプロジェクトが拡張したものを用いている。453遺跡、895石器群を対象とし、あるモードが注目してる石器群に存在していれば1を、していなければ0をコードし、各石器群について01のベクトル配列を作成した。この配列の多様性を、多変量解析をもちいて定量化・可視化した。その結果、おおまかにではあるが、通時的に東西で石器製作技術が異なること、時間とともに、西アジアおよび北アジアに新しい技術が普及していくことが示唆された。少なくとも変化の一部は、現生人類の拡散と関連する可能性がある。この結果は、Quaternary International誌に掲載された。 (2) のシミュレーションにおいては、世界地図を10度ずつに区切り、地理空間をメッシュに分割した。メッシュ上で、エージェントは出生・死亡、文化伝達、移住をおこなう。各メッシュは、対応する現実の空間の標高に応じて環境収容力が決まっており、適応的な新技術は、メッシュの環境収容力を上げると仮定した。一定時間シミュレーションを走らせた後、パレオアジアDBに収録されているのと同じ遺跡からサンプリングをおこない、現実のデータと比較した。現在、実際のデータに近いデータをシミュレーションによって生成することはできていないが、現実のデータが単なるサンプリングバイアスである可能性は低いという見通しを得ている。 本研究課題の成果を含む、文化進化研究一般の数理モデルやデータ解析について扱った『文化進化の数理』を出版した。

    Morphological analysis of Ongagawa style pottery from the Yayoi period, the construction of a transmission model, and the creation of a database were conducted. Data on Ongagawa-style pottery from northern Kyushu, Chushikoku, Kinki and Tokai was collected, and its spatio-temporal variation was quantified using elliptical Fourier analysis, a method of geometric morphometrics. In addition, a mathematical model of cultural evolution was constructed, the parameters of the model were estimated from the data, and the mathematical model was used to examine how the nature of archaeological data affects the results of statistical analysis. In addition, we constructed a database of pottery, and built a system that allows the above-mentioned analysis to be performed with just a click on a browser.

  10. Mathematical analysis on morphological transformation and variation of iron arrowheads in protohistoric Japan

    In this project, we got 600 outline figures of metal arrowheads from the Kofun period protohistric Japan (3-7c AD) as well as the Korean peninsula by an elliptical fourier analysis to illustrate thier temporal transfromation process and spatial variations. Especially we found significant variations of the willow-leaf-shaped iron arrowheads between Northern Kyushu and the other districts, as well as temporal transformation among them. Furthermore we discovered that willow-leaf-shaped bronze arrowheads began to change their shapes drasticalliy in the late forth century. It was proved to be multilineal diversification by main ingredient analysis. In doing so, we popularized a procedure to illustrate the process and mechanism of artifacts of the past objectively, quantitively and more visually than ever.

    The aim of present study is to introduce mathematical analysis into archaeology, with a particular focus on methods in studies on cultural evolution. The present study has two steps. In the first step, I quantified shapes of a type of pottery in the early phase of the Yayoi period by using methods in geometric morphometrics. Then I visualized geographical variation in shapes of the pottery. This variation could be related with the spreading process of the pottery. In the second phase, I developed a database for the pottery with several analytical methods. In this database, we can intuitively use the above methods just by clicking subjects and methods on a web browser.
