Methane (CH4) is the second most important greenhouse gas and has been rising following a brief period of stabilization from 1999 to 2006. Determining the cause of this rise is critical for reducing emissions and predicting future climate sensitivity. The carbon and hydrogen stable isotopic composition of atmospheric CH4 is controlled by variability in isotopically distinguishable emission categories and fractionating sink processes. While most studies using atmospheric δ13C-CH4 data suggest a dominantly microbial source for recent CH4 growth, this understanding is not uniform, and uncertainties remain [S. Schwietzke et al., Nature 538, 88-91 (2016), S. Basu et al., Atmos. Chem. Phys. 22, 15351-15377 (2022), J. Thanwerdas, M. Saunois, A. Berchet, I. Pison, P. Bousquet, Atmos. Chem. Phys. 24, 2129-2167 (2024)]. Here, we present a harmonized global measurement record of atmospheric δD-CH4 and estimate emissions from 1999 to 2022 with global isotope mass balance calculations using both carbon and hydrogen isotopic ratios. We conduct thorough uncertainty analyses to separate absolute magnitude and emission trend uncertainties and find with high confidence that trends in δ13C-CH4 and δD-CH4 observations are both consistent with an entirely microbial emission driver of the post-2006 CH4 rise, while fossil fuel emissions have remained relatively stable.

Urban areas are increasingly recognized as significant sources of methane (CH4) emissions, with recent studies highlighting unexpectedly high emissions from fossil fuel-related sources. Here, we conducted quasi-continuous, one-year eddy covariance measurements of CH4 and ethane (C2H6) fluxes in Sakai, a major metropolitan area in Japan. By leveraging the coemission of CH4 and C2H6, we separated and quantified contributions from natural gas leakage and biogenic sources. Results show that 65-78% of the total annual CH4 flux (10.7 g CH4 m-2 yr-1) originated from natural gas, with emissions elevated during daytime and weekdays, indicating strong links to anthropogenic activity. Natural gas-related CH4 fluxes remained high year-round and were further amplified in summer and winter, likely reflecting seasonal gas demand. Footprint analysis identified hotspots near steel and chemical industries, suggesting important point sources. Although biogenic CH4 contributed less overall, fluxes increased in warmer months. Mobile surveys revealed multiple localized sources within the flux footprint, enabling identification of specific facilities. These findings indicate that much of the natural gas-related CH4 emissions are not captured in local inventories, underscoring the need for improved quantification and mitigation. Eddy covariance and mobile monitoring are effective tools to support data-driven urban methane policies.

Abstract. Atmospheric methane (CH4) growth rates reached unprecedented values in the years 2020–2022. To identify the main drivers of this increase, an inverse modeling study estimated regional and sectoral emission changes for 2016–2022. Three inverse estimates based on different sets of atmospheric CH4 observations (surface observations only, surface and aircraft observations, and GOSAT observations) consistently suggest notable emission increases from 2016–2019 to 2020–2022 in the tropics (15° S–10° N) (10–18 Tg CH4 yr−1) and in northern low latitudes (10–35° N) (ca. 20 Tg CH4 yr−1), the latter of which likely contributed to the growth rate surge from 2020. The emission increase in the northern low latitudes is attributed to emissions in South Asia and northern Southeast Asia, which abruptly increased from 2019 to 2020, and elevated emissions continued until 2022. Meanwhile, the tropical emission increase is dominated by Tropical South America and Central Africa, but emissions were continuously increasing before 2019. Agreement was found in the sectoral estimates of the three inversions in the tropics and northern low latitudes, suggesting the largest contribution of biogenic emissions. Uncertainty reductions demonstrate that the flux estimates in Asia are well constrained by surface and aircraft observations. Furthermore, a sensitivity test with the probable reduction of OH radicals showed smaller emissions by up to 2–3 Tg CH4 yr−1 in each Asian region for 2020, still suggesting notable emission contributions. These results highlight the importance of biogenic emissions in Asian regions for the persistent high growth rate observed during 2020–2022.

type:Atmospheric science/Climatology type:Glaciology Air sampled from polar firn is useful for reconstructing atmospheric composition over the last few decades and understanding the trapping processes of air in the ice sheets, as well as determining the age of air relative to the ice at the same depth. This paper presents the composition of firn air collected at H128 and NDFN in Dronning Maud Land, East Antarctica. The firn air at both sites was carefully sampled using a sampling system developed at the National Institute of Polar Research. We provide elemental and isotopic ratios of N2, O2, Ar, Kr, Xe, and Ne, as well as concentrations of CO2, CH4, N2O, SF6 and CFCs for both sites, measured using high-precision measurement systems across multiple laboratories. The data would be valuable for studying air entrapment processes in firn and reconstructing past ice sheet environments and atmospheric compositions. source:https://doi.org/10.17592/001.2024102102

Abstract. Systematic measurements of atmospheric methane (CH4) mole fractions at the northern high latitudes only began in the early 1980s. Although CH4 measurements from Greenland ice cores consistently covered the period before ∼ 1900, no reliable observational record is available for the intermediate period. We newly report a data set of tracegases from the air trapped in firn (an intermediate stage between snow and glacial ice formation) collected at the NGRIP (North Greenland Ice Core Project) site in 2001. We also use a set of published firn air data at the NEEM (North Greenland Eemian ice Drilling) site. The two Arctic firn air data sets are analysed with a firn air transport model, which translateshistorical variations to depth profiles of trace gases in firn. We examine a variety of possible firn diffusivity profiles, using a suite of measured trace gases, and reconstruct the CH4 mole fraction by an iterative dating method. Although the reconstructions of the Arctic CH4 mole fraction before the mid-1970s still has large uncertainties (> 30 ppb – parts per billion), we find a relatively narrow range of atmospheric CH4 history that is consistent with both depth profiles of NGRIP and NEEM. The atmospheric CH4 history inferred by this study is more consistent with the atmospheric CH4 scenario prepared for the NEEM firn modelling than that for the CMIP6 (Climate Model Intercomparison Project Phase 6) experiments. Our study shows that the atmospheric CH4 scenario used for the NEEM firn modelling is considered to be the current best choice for the Arctic CH4 history, but it should not be used to tune firn air transport models until being verified by further measurements from sources such as the Arctic ice cores. Given the current difficulty in reconstructing the CH4 history with low uncertainty from the firn air data sets from Greenland, future sampling and measurements of ice cores at a high-accumulation site may be the only way to accurately reconstruct the atmospheric CH4 trend over the 20th century.

Many studies addressed the global cycle of methane, an important greenhouse gas. Yet variations of atmospheric methane concentration over the last 40 years have not been well explained. Synthesis analysis, which combines both bottom-up and top-down methodologies, is the current activity of the international research community. Measurements of isotope ratios of atmospheric methane have been made for the last decades. However, the research background has changed dramatically due to advances such as increasing number of data aided by progress of measurement techniques, more detailed survey of isotope signatures of various methane sources, and the aforementioned synthesis analyses. This presentation will cover the current understanding of the global methane budget and challenges in isotope measurement.

Air from porous layers above ice sheets (firn) is valuable for reconstructing atmospheric composition from the present to up to about 100 years back in time. Accurate estimation of diffusivity profile in the firn is key to reliable reconstruction of atmospheric history of trace gases. In this study, we set up a measurement system for halocarbons and analyzed air samples collected from firn in the Greenland. Using the measurement halocarbon data, we constrained diffusivity profile in the firn to reconstruct the methane concentration over the last 50 years. It is shown that reliable reconstruction of the Arctic methane concentration is possible back to 1970s.

Temporal variations of atmospheric CH_4 concentration over the last 130 kyrs were reconstructed from deep ice cores drilled at Dome Fuji, Antarctica and NGRIP and NEEM, Greenland. By analyzing the reconstructed differences of CH_4 concentration between north and south polar regions using an atmospheric model, spatiotemporal variations of CH_4 emissions from natural sources were closely examined. The values ofδ^<13>C andδD of atmospheric CH_4 were also reconstructed using the Dome Fuji deep ice core. Based on their temporal variations, causes of glacial/interglacial variations in atmospheric CH_4 were discussed especially in terms of changes in CH_4 emissions from natural sources.
