I graduated from the School of Medicine, Kumamoto University in 2014 and received my Ph.D. in Medicine from the Department of Public Health, Faculty of Life Sciences, Kumamoto University in 2018. I worked as a medical staff member at the Department of Community Medicine and General Practice, Kumamoto University Hospital, from 2016; as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychiatry, Division of Clinical Neuroscience, Faculty of Medicine, University of Miyazaki, from 2018; and as a Lecturer in the Division of Health Science, Center for Health Sciences and Counseling, Kyushu University, from 2022. In 2023, I was appointed Specially Appointed Associate Professor at the Office for Promotion of Community-Based Interprofessional Education, Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Pharmaceutical Sciences / Graduate School of Medicine, Dentistry and Pharmaceutical Sciences, Okayama University. Since April 2026, I have been serving as Lecturer in the Division of Epidemiology, Graduate School of Medicine, Tohoku University.

I am a board-certified psychiatrist, a designated mental health physician, and a certified occupational physician. My main research areas include suicide prevention, disaster medicine, community health, and mental health. Using large-scale epidemiological survey data, I examine the relationships among health behaviors, mental health, and social determinants from a public health perspective. I am also interested in the intersection of artificial intelligence and public health, including the appropriate use of generative AI in healthcare and educational settings.

I have served as a committee member, representative, and in other roles in organizations such as the Japan Primary Care Association, the Japanese Society of Psychiatry and Neurology, the Japanese Young Psychiatrists Organization, and the Japanese Association for Disaster Medicine. In 2025, I participated in the United Nations University SDG University Platform as a member from Okayama University, as well as in the United Nations Higher Education Sustainability Initiative in the area of AI and Research & Development, where I worked on cross-institutional collaboration in sustainability and mental health. I have also been continuously involved in social and community activities as an instructor for the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare’s Kokoro Supporter Training Program, a domestic trainer for JQAN related to the Sphere Standards, and a trainer for Save the Children’s Psychological First Aid for Children program.

My principal research fields are suicide prevention, disaster medicine, mental health, and public health, including the social determinants of health. Across these areas, I am engaged in research that also incorporates the use of AI.

    Abstract Aim We examined whether rurality was associated with psychiatric standardized claim ratios computed using medical‐institution location, and how these patterns related to area deprivation and residence‐based suicide mortality in Japan. Methods We conducted a nationwide ecological study of 335 secondary medical areas. Rurality, measured with the Rurality Index for Japan, and a census‐based Area Deprivation Index were population‐weighted from municipalities. Psychiatric specialty therapy claims (April 2023 to March 2024) from Japan's national health‐insurance claims open data were expressed as standardized claim ratios: observed claims billed by institutions in each area divided by national age–sex expected claims. Suicide deaths (April 2022 to March 2025) were expressed as age–sex standardized mortality ratios. Ecological rate‐ratio trends were estimated with quasi‐Poisson models. Results Outpatient claim ratios were lower in rural than urban areas but non‐monotonic (most urban, 108.4; fourth quintile, 76.9; and most rural, 81.3). Inpatient ratios peaked in the second quintile, and suicide mortality rose with rurality. Per 10‐point higher rurality score, outpatient volume was lower (rate ratio, 0.939; 95% confidence interval, 0.921–0.956) and remained lower after including deprivation (0.919; 0.896–0.942); the rurality–suicide association attenuated. Nearest‐three‐area pooling raised the most rural median outpatient ratio from 62.2 to 101.1. Conclusion More rural areas had lower outpatient psychiatric claim volume billed by local institutions relative to national age–sex benchmarks, but this contrast narrowed after nearest‐area pooling, consistent with cross‐boundary care. These institution–location ratios should prompt local review with residence‐based and capacity data, not be read as evidence of under‐provision.

    Introduction Rural–urban disparities in mortality persist across high-income countries but whether these differences reflect geographic barriers, socioeconomic disadvantage or both remains unclear. Disentangling these pathways is important for designing effective interventions but nationwide Japanese evidence that jointly models geographic remoteness and area deprivation in relation to cause-specific mortality remains limited. Methods This municipality-level ecological study analysed 4 078 801 deaths during 2017–2019 across 1890 municipalities in Japan. Rurality was measured using the Rurality Index for Japan, and socioeconomic deprivation using the Area Deprivation Index (ADI). Bayesian spatial Poisson models estimated rate ratios (RRs) for all-cause mortality and 34 cause-specific outcomes (35 outcomes in total) with and without ADI adjustment. Percentage attenuation was interpreted descriptively. Results After ADI adjustment, rural excess persisted for all-cause mortality overall (adjusted RR 1.010 (95% credible interval (CrI) 1.003 to 1.016)) and in females (1.009 (95% CrI 1.002 to 1.016), while the male estimate was close to the null. Rural excess also persisted for selected cardiovascular and cerebrovascular outcomes in the total population, including heart diseases, acute myocardial infarction, arrhythmias and conduction disorders, heart failure, cerebrovascular diseases and cerebral infarction (RRs 1.023–1.052), plus senility, unintentional injuries, traffic accidents and suicide. Aggregate malignant neoplasms, which overlapped with site-specific cancers, were near null in the total population, whereas tuberculosis, pneumonia, several site-specific cancers, asthma and liver disease showed urban excess, most notably tuberculosis (0.858 (95% CrI 0.814 to 0.905)). Conclusions Municipal rurality showed heterogeneous cause-specific associations with mortality after ADI adjustment. Higher rurality was associated with excess mortality for several time-sensitive or access-sensitive causes whereas infectious, respiratory, liver and site-specific cancer outcomes showed urban excess. Because the ecological design precludes causal inference about specific pathways reducing disparities requires cause-specific strategies addressing geographic access, socioeconomic disadvantage and urban-context risks, rather than uniform rural–urban policies.

    Background Medical interviewing is a critical skill in clinical practice, yet opportunities for practical training are limited in Japanese medical schools, necessitating urgent measures. Given advancements in artificial intelligence (AI) technology, its application in the medical field is expanding. However, reports on its application in medical interviews in medical education are scarce. Objective This study aimed to investigate whether medical students’ interview skills could be improved by engaging with AI-simulated patients using large language models, including the provision of feedback. Methods This nonrandomized controlled trial was conducted with fourth-year medical students in Japan. A simulation program using large language models was provided to 35 students in the intervention group in 2023, while 110 students from 2022 who did not participate in the intervention were selected as the control group. The primary outcome was the score on the Pre-Clinical Clerkship Objective Structured Clinical Examination (pre-CC OSCE), a national standardized clinical skills examination, in medical interviewing. Secondary outcomes included surveys such as the Simulation-Based Training Quality Assurance Tool (SBT-QA10), administered at the start and end of the study. Results The AI intervention group showed significantly higher scores on medical interviews than the control group (AI group vs control group: mean 28.1, SD 1.6 vs 27.1, SD 2.2; P=.01). There was a trend of inverse correlation between the SBT-QA10 and pre-CC OSCE scores (regression coefficient –2.0 to –2.1). No significant safety concerns were observed. Conclusions Education through medical interviews using AI-simulated patients has demonstrated safety and a certain level of educational effectiveness. However, at present, the educational effects of this platform on nonverbal communication skills are limited, suggesting that it should be used as a supplementary tool to traditional simulation education.

    Abstract There is insufficient research on the usefulness of psychological interventions, such as psychological first aid (PFA), during outbreaks. We searched for and critically appraised systematic reviews that examined the effectiveness of PFA during infectious disease outbreaks, such as the novel coronavirus disease (COVID‐19). Systematic reviews that examined the efficacy of PFA in the severe acute respiratory syndrome, Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus, Ebola virus disease, and COVID‐19 outbreaks were searched through PubMed on February 19, 2021. The three included systematic reviews were critically appraised and assessed using AMSTAR‐2. One review's overall confidence in its findings was evaluated as “high,” which suggested that PFA training had a favorable effect on healthcare personnel. Furthermore, the review also demonstrated that PFA was commonly used during outbreaks and could be delivered through multiple methods, such as a phone or video call. Although it was anticipated that PFA would improve subjective well‐being, reports showed no evidence of reduced depression or insomnia. Future studies should examine additional numbers of PFA recipients and conduct quasi‐experimental studies to better understand the effectiveness of PFA. Evidence on its effectiveness in infectious disease outbreaks is still lacking, along with research and evaluation methods. Quasi‐experimental studies, such as comparisons with other psychological interventions, are required to better understand the effectiveness of PFA.

    Suicide prevention is a crucial policy issue in Japan to be addressed nationally. Nevertheless, if there are regional differences in suicide, even in adjacent sub-regions, measures may need to be taken at the sub-regional level. Previous studies have not compared regional differences in suicide based on the size of policy units, such as prefectures, secondary medical areas, and municipalities. This study used the number of suicides from open data for 10 years from 2009 to 2018 to obtain shrinkage estimates of the standardized mortality ratio (SMR) using the Bayesian hierarchical model. We visualized and compared the regional disparities in suicide for each policy unit. For each gender and policy unit, adjacent regions had similar clusters of SMRs and positive spatial autocorrelation of global Moran’s I (p < 0.001 for each). Comparisons between each policy unit showed that even if the SMR was low for the prefectural units, there were regions with high SMRs in municipalities and secondary medical areas, and vice versa. It was found that assessing suicide solely on a prefecture-by-prefecture basis may overlook regional disparities in suicide. This research emphasizes the need to establish suicide indicators at the secondary medical or municipal level and execute individual suicide prevention interventions in neighboring communities. Prefectures can also play a role in developing collaborative cooperation between neighboring regions by acting as actors.

    AIM: To investigate the distribution of nurse practitioners (NPs) across Japan and their perceived facilitators and barriers to NP implementation in Japan. BACKGROUND: NP certification examinations have been conducted in Japan since 2011, and by 2020, there were 487 NPs in the country. The momentum of NP implementation is slower in Japan compared with other countries. METHODS: A cross-sectional descriptive study, following the STROBE guidelines, was conducted. Web-based survey questionnaires, developed by the authors, were administered to 248 NPs whose email addresses were maintained by the certification management body. RESULTS: Valid responses were obtained from 101 NPs (response rate: 40.7%), of which 34% were male. The respondents had more than 12 years of registered nurse experience on an average before enrolling in the graduate NP program. 53% were employed as NPs from the beginning, while 25% were initially employed as registered nurses and later advanced to NPs, and 11% still worked as RNs. A majority worked in hospitals with beds. Many NPs perceived the lack of NP national licensure and reimbursement benefits as barriers to NP implementation, whereas recognition from superiors and organizations was considered facilitators. CONCLUSIONS: Despite their small numbers in Japan, NPs take on crucial tasks and contribute to the appropriate distribution of medical resources. The NP licensure system and recognition from superiors and organizations may be necessary to promote NP roles in Japan. IMPLICATIONS FOR NURSING AND HEALTH POLICY: Some certified NPs still work as registered nurses. Recognition from nursing and organization administrators is critical to implementing NPs. To this end, a reimbursement system benefiting the organizations and a legislation facilitating NP employment are required.

    To examine the different patterns in utilization of psychological services between Japanese and American college students, a total of 316 American students (122 men and 194 women) and 362 Japanese students (147 men and 215 women) participated in this study. We used the following psychological instruments: Attitude Toward Seeking Professional Psychological Help scale, Interpersonal Openness (openness regarding professional psychological help) and Confidence Self-construal scale, Sex Role Inventory, and Recognition of Psychological Help. This study concluded that collectivism is a significant predictor of recognizing the need for mental health services in the U.S., while it is not in Japan. Compared to American and female participants, Japanese and male participants feel greater stigmas toward mental health professionals. Openness to psychological help collectivism was a significant predictor for openness among the American sample, while it was not in the Japanese sample. Collectivism was a significant predictor for openness among the American sample, while it was not in the Japanese sample. Individualism was a significant predictor for confidence in America, but it was not in Japan. As predicted, Japanese participants feel greater stigma and less recognition, openness, and confidence toward mental health services than Americans. It is important for mental health professionals to educate college students that individual who seek help have high masculine traits to ameliorate the negative attitude toward mental health professionals.

    BACKGROUND: Relatively low publication rates of abstracts presented at scientific meetings (i.e., 37.3%, 95% CI: 35.3-39.3) have been reported across various fields worldwide. However, no study has investigated the publication rate of abstracts presented at psychiatric meetings and factors associated with full publication in Japan. This study aimed to determine the proportion of conference abstracts in the psychiatric field that reach full publication in English and its associated factors in Japan. METHODS: A retrospective study was conducted to determine the publication rate of abstracts presented at the annual meetings of the Japanese Society of Psychiatry and Neurology (JSPN) in 2013 and 2014, the largest psychiatric meeting in Japan, by searching for full-text publications in PubMed and Google Scholar. Furthermore, we examined factors associated with a successful full publication of the conference abstract. RESULTS: Of the 737 abstracts evaluated, 132 (17.9%) were published in peer-reviewed journals; the publication rates for oral and poster presentations were 12.7% (46/363) and 23.0% (86/374), respectively. In multivariate logistic regression analyses, the following factors were significantly associated with successful publications: poster presentations (odds ratio [OR]: 1.67, 95% CI: 1.10-2.57), original studies (OR: 4.16, 95% CI: 2.44-7.47), and academic institutions (OR: 5.77, 95% CI: 3.44-10.19). CONCLUSIONS: The publication rate in English of the conference abstracts presented at the JSPN annual meetings was relatively lower than those in previous studies. Further encouragement of the publication of the abstracts presented in psychiatric conferences in Japan would be helpful in disseminating scientific findings in the field of psychiatry.     (Comment) Thank you for this study detailing the trends and factors associated with suicidal motives among students in Japan spanning from 2007 to 2022 [1]. The manuscript provides crucial insights into this somber issue. However, several critical contextual aspects necessitate further consideration. In Japan, suicide statistics are compiled by the National Police Agency and published by the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare. The data employed in Okada et al.'s report draws from these sources. Notably, in January 2022, the governmental agency substantially revised the categorization of reasons for suicide, expanding from 7 primary categories with 52 subcategories to 7 primary categories with 75 subcategories [2]. Despite the significant modifications in the variables used and their quantity in the data, this issue went unmentioned by Okada and colleagues. Inoue et al. have alerted the academic community about the substantial impact of this epidemiological data collection method on suicide research in Japan [3]. In addition to the aforementioned significant alterations, the National Police Agency, which previously aggregated three reasons for a suicide report up until 2021, updated this to four reasons starting from January 2022. Therefore, if the time series analysis of Okada et al. includes data after January 2022 without considering this level change, the findings after 2022 may need to be more accurate and should be interpreted with caution. We conducted an interrupted time series segmented regression analysis using data from January 2010 to December 2022 to investigate changes in the level and trend of identified suicide cases before and after the introduction of the new method [4]. Following the change in data collection methods, there was an increase of 839 cases (95% confidence interval 639–1,039 cases) in identified instances. This increase clearly indicates a level change due to the system revision. The new protocol, which increases the number of subcategories of reasons for suicide and records up to four reasons per person, is intended to understand the multifaceted causes of suicide better. This enriched data may allow government agencies and related institutions to refine and tailor suicide interventions and support measures more effectively. In conclusion, while the change in tabulation methodology makes it difficult to analyze a series of reasons for suicide, ongoing analysis and validation is essential to truly understand the impact of this change on suicide prevention measures.     未就学児の母親の受援力（支援を受け入れ，活用する力）の重要性が明らかになっている。本研究では父親も調査対象に加え，子育て世代の男女の受援力尺度の汎用性や性差等を明らかにし，さらに受援力のメカニズムや向上要因を探索することを目的とした。 当該年度は，2022年度，2023年度より継続してきた母親を対象とした量的研究（インターネット調査），質的研究（インタビュー調査，インターネット調査の自由記述）の分析を進めた。この他，すでに蓄積されているデータも活用し，受援力に関連すると考えられるネガティブサポート（望ましくない支援）体験や，妊娠，出産，子育て期の困難体験，新型コロナウイルス流行下の状況についての記述も進め，それらが母親の行動やwell-beingなどにどのような影響をもたらし得るのかを引き続き検討した。またこれらの結果を参考に，いかにして受援力を向上することができるのかという点についても，多角度から検討を行った。さらに受援力の変動可能性について，4時点の縦断データを用いて検証し，比較的短期間でも変動（向上）し得る可能性があることを確認した。こうした研究成果の一部は国内外の学会で発表し，論文化した。 一方，当該年度は父親を対象とした調査の開始年でもあり，これまで蓄積された母親の研究結果や文献レビューを元に，父親にも適した内容となる調査項目を作成した。これらを踏まえ，全国の子育て世代の男女1万人を対象としたインターネット調査を実施した。

    子どものための心理的応急処置 （Psychological First Aid for Children：子どものためのPFA）」は、災害時などに、ストレスを抱えた子どものこころを傷つけず適切に対応するための、誰もができるこころの応急手当てです。「子どものためのPFA」は、世界保健機関（WHO）などが2011年に開発したPFAマニュアルをもとに、子どもの発達段階の特性や年齢にあった必要な支援など、子どもに特化したマニュアルを2013年にセーブ・ザ・チルドレンが作成しました。2014年から日本国内でこの普及を行っています。 https://www.savechildren.or.jp/scjcms/sc_activity.php?d=2429
