    C-I bond extension and fission following ultraviolet (UV, 262 nm) photoexcitation of 2- and 3-iodothiophene is studied using ultrafast time-resolved extreme ultraviolet (XUV) ionization in conjunction with velocity map ion imaging. The photoexcited molecules and eventual I atom products are probed by site-selective ionization at the I 4d edge using intense XUV pulses, which induce multiple charges initially localized to the iodine atom. At C-I separations below the critical distance for charge transfer (CT), charge can redistribute around the molecule leading to Coulomb explosion and charged fragments with high kinetic energy. At greater C-I separations, beyond the critical distance, CT is no longer possible and the measured kinetic energies of the charged iodine atoms report on the neutral dissociation process. The time and momentum resolved measurements allow determination of the timescales and the respective product momentum and kinetic energy distributions for both isomers, which are interpreted in terms of rival 'direct' and 'indirect' dissociation pathways. The measurements are compared with a classical over the barrier model, which reveals that the onset of the indirect dissociation process is delayed by ∼1 ps relative to the direct process. The kinetics of the two processes show no discernible difference between the two parent isomers, but the branching between the direct and indirect dissociation channels and the respective product momentum distributions show isomer dependencies. The greater relative yield of indirect dissociation products from 262 nm photolysis of 3-iodothiophene (cf. 2-iodothiophene) is attributed to the different partial cross-sections for (ring-centred) π∗ ← π and (C-I bond localized) σ∗ ← (n/π) excitation in the respective parent isomers.

    Ultrafast x-ray photoelectron diffraction (UXPD) for free molecules has a promising potential to probe the local structures of the molecules in an element-specific fashion. Our UXPD scheme consists of three steps: (1) near-infrared laser (NIR) with ns pulse duration aligns sample molecules, (2) ultra-violet laser with fs pulse duration pumps the aligned molecules, and (3) soft x-ray free-electron laser (SXFEL) with fs pulse duration probes the molecules by measuring x-ray photoelectron diffraction (XPD) profiles. Employing steps of (1) and (3), we have measured I 3 d XPD profiles from ground state iodobenzene aligned by the NIR laser with the SXFEL. Then, we have intensively calculated I 3 d XPD profiles with density functional theory, taking degrees of alignments of the molecules into account, to extract a distance between C and I atoms in iodobenzene from the experimental I 3 d XPD profiles. Although we have failed to determine the distance from the comparison between the experimental and theoretical results, we have succeeded in concluding that the degeneracies of the initial state eliminate the sensitivity on molecular structure in the I 3 d XPD profiles. Thus, the observation of fine structures in the XPD profiles could be expected, if a nondegenerate molecular orbital is selected for a probe of UXPD. Finally, we have summarized our criteria to perform UXPD successfully: (1) to use SXFEL, (2) to prepare sample molecules with the degree of alignment higher than 0.8, and (3) to select a photoemission process from a nondegenerate inner-shell orbital of sample molecules.

    Abstract The photoelectron angular distribution asymmetry parameters β of the Xe 3d subshell were investigated using an x-ray free-electron laser (XFEL) at photon energies of 750 and 800 eV. Owing to the perfect polarization of the XFEL and two-dimensional momentum imaging capability of our velocity map imaging spectrometer, we determined the β values with high accuracy. The β values were also investigated based on relativistic time-dependent density functional theory calculations of up to 900 eV of photon energies. By comparing all the available experimental results including our data with the most reliable theories on the photon energy dependence of the β parameters, serious differences are noted between the experiments and theories. Further studies on resolving this difference will provide new insight into the photoionization processes of the deep inner shells.

    We demonstrate the generation of femtosecond pulses with targeted time-dependent polarization. In order to shape desired pulses, we feed back analyzed results from a homemade polarization characterization system. The characterization of momentary polarization is based on the Fourier transform analyses of dual-channel spectral interferometry. The genetic algorithm (GA) is employed to find optimum modulation parameters for the pulse shaper. We successfully shape femtosecond pulses whose ellipticity increases at a constant rate. With the target rate of 3.44×10-3 fs-1, we achieve pulses with the rate of 3.24×10-3 fs-1 at the 150 th generation of GA. The relative error between the shaped pulse and the target pulse is less than 6% over the main part of the pulse. This shows that our shaping technique is capable of shaping femtosecond pulses with desired timedependent polarization. Time-dependent polarization pulses have many potential applications as discussed in the text.

    High-order harmonic generation (HHG) from atoms and molecules offers potential application as a coherent ultrashort radiation source in the extreme ultraviolet and soft X-ray regions. In the three-step model of HHG, an electron tunnels out from the atom and may recombine with the parent ion (emitting a high-energy photon) after undergoing laser-driven motion in the continuum. Aligned molecules can be used to study quantum phenomena in HHG associated with molecular symmetries; in particular, simultaneous observations of both ion yields and harmonic signals under the same conditions serve to disentangle the contributions from the ionization and recombination processes. Here we report evidence for quantum interference of electron de Broglie waves in the recombination process of HHG from aligned CO2 molecules. The interference takes place within a single molecule and within one optical cycle. Characteristic modulation patterns of the harmonic signals measured as a function of the pump-probe delay are explained with simple formulae determined by the valence orbital of the molecules. We propose that simultaneous observations of both ion yields and harmonic signals can serve as a new route to probe the instantaneous structure of molecular systems.

    Multiphoton ionization processes in aligned I2 molecules are actively controlled by the homemade pulse shaping system, with which a time-dependent polarization pulse can be generated and controlled. We find a correlation between a femtosecond time-dependent polarization pulse and the production efficiency of evenly or oddly charged molecular ions. We achieve much better controllability of the correlation with a time-dependent polarization pulse than with a pulse having a fixed ellipticity. The results suggest the existence of an unknown tunnel ionization mechanism which is characteristic of a time-dependent polarization pulse. Our experiments point to new directions in optimal control studies with molecular systems, as discussed in the text.

    The molecular alignment technique utilizing the interaction between the intense nonresonant laser field and the induced dipole moment is applied to the homonuclear rare gas dimers Rg2 (Rg=Ar, Kr, and Xe). The degree of alignment is investigated by Coulomb exploding Rg2 and by measuring the angular distributions of the fragment ions. At the same peak intensity of the laser field, the degree of alignment ≪cos2 θ ≫ becomes larger in order of Ar2, Kr2, and Xe2, reflecting the order of magnitudes of their polarizability anisotropy Δα. By taking I2 molecules as a reference, Δα of Ar2, Kr2, and Xe2 are estimated to be 0.5, 0.7, and 1.3 Å3, respectively.

    The orientation of polar molecules is demonstrated by the combination of electrostatic and nonresonant, nanosecond Nd:YAG laser fields. The orientation is probed by Coulomb exploding the molecules with a femtosecond laser pulse and detecting the fragment ions with the time-of-flight mass spectrometer. A significant asymmetry is observed in the signal magnitudes of the forward and the backward fragments, which is well explained in terms of the above-mentioned combined-fields scheme proposed by Friedrich and Herschbach [J. Phys. Chem. A 103, 10280 (1999)]. The degree of orientation is enhanced by increasing the peak intensity of the laser field and the magnitude of the electrostatic field, or by lowering the initial rotational temperature. The experimental results obtained are compatible with our numerical simulations.

    We demonstrate that molecules with a moderate permanent dipole moment can be oriented with combined electrostatic and pulsed, nonresonant laser fields. We use OCS molecules as a sample.     The photodissociation processes of the manganese cluster ions Mnn+ (n=3 and 4) were investigated in the visible and near-infrared photon-energy ranges. The threshold energies were determined for the two-atom-loss channels by measurements of the spectra of the partial photodissociation cross sections. The binding energies of Mnn+ (n=3 and 4) were obtained by using these threshold energies and the known bond dissociation energy of Mn2+. The bond dissociation energies of Mn3+, D0(Mn2+⋯Mn), and Mn4+, D0(Mn3+⋯Mn), were determined to be 0.83±0.05 and 1.04±0.07 eV, respectively. Thus the binding energies (per atom) of Mn3+ and Mn4+ turned out to be 0.74±0.03 and 0.82±0.05 eV, respectively. These findings show that the interaction between manganese atoms is exceptionally weak, compared with other transition-metal cluster ions.

    The optical absorption spectrum of a vanadium tetramer ion, V4+, was obtained by measuring a photodissociation efficiency of an ion complex, V4+Ar, as a function of the photon energy of the laser pulse used for the photodissociation. The optical absorption spectrum thus obtained was simulated by a density functional calculation to search for the most probable geometric structure which reproduces the measured spectrum. The analysis showed that V4+ is most likely to have a “distorted” tetrahedral structure with C2v symmetry. The ground electronic state of V4+ was found to be a low spin state, A12. The relatively broad spectral profile is explained in terms of the distortion related to a low-energy vibration. Geometry optimization of the Amsterdam density functional (ADF) calculation also predicts C2v symmetry for the structure of V4+.

    Photodissociation spectra of cobalt cluster ion–argon atom complexes, Co+nAr (n=3–5), were measured by detecting the product ions, Co+n and Con−1+, with a tunable laser pulse from an optical parametric oscillator in the photon-energy range from 0.7 to 2.8 eV. The photodissociation spectra thus obtained are equivalent to the optical absorption spectra of the underlying cobalt cluster ions, Co+n, because the argon atom is weakly bound to Co+n. The spectrum was analyzed by means of a spin-polarized DV-Xα calculation, and the electronic and the geometric structures of Co+3 and Co+4 were determined. The analysis shows that all the transitions in the entire energy range studied occur between occupied and unoccupied energy levels associated with 3d atomic orbitals (AOs) having the minority spin. The spin difference (difference in population per Co atom between the majority and the minority spins) was evaluated from the electronic structures thus obtained. The spin differences of 2.00 for Co+3 and 1.75 for Co+4 indicate ferromagnetic spin coupling in these cobalt cluster ions.

    私たちは,光化学反応途中の分子構造ダイナミクスを直接観測することを最終的な目標として,超高速X 線光電子回折法という手法の開発研究を続けている.これまでに,硬X 線・軟X 線の超短パルスである自由電子レーザーを利用して,配列した分子からの光電子角度分布の観測に成功した.同時に,光電子回折理論に基づくシミュレーションを利用して分子の瞬時構造を推定するための解析プロトコルを確立した.また,自由電子レーザー実験では必然的に表れる遅延時間の揺らぎの影響を低減するために,光電子と同時に生成されるフラグメントイオンの運動量を基にデータを並べ替える手法を試みた.その結果、光電子角度分布の分子配列依存性を明らかにした.開発の現状を紹介するとともに,今後の課題を議論する.

    We succeeded in measuring Ar 3p photoelectron sideband spectra due to two-color XUV + NIR laser fields. In our calculations of the first-order time-dependent perturbation model, the sideband spectra are well reproduced by considering the timing jitters between the XUV and the NIR pulses. The present approach can be used as a method to evaluate the timing jitters inevitable in FEL experiments. We performed time-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy of valence orbitals of aligned CO2 molecules using the femtosecond SX-FEL and the synchronized NIR, and then obtained the photoelectron angular distributions of the CO2 molecules aligned in the laboratory frame. We also calculated such angular distributions by considering the degree of alignment. From this, the simulation of the experimental results suggests that, when the degree of alignment can be increased up to 0.8, the molecular geometries during ultrafast photochemical reactions can be extracted from the experimental.

    The present study aims to observe the structural dynamics during ultrafast photochemical reactions by the photoelectron diffraction using the free electron laser (FEL), in the extreme ultraviolet (EUV) regions. I focused on developing the time-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy by synchronizing the optical laser and EUV-FEL pulses. One example is the sideband spectra of Ar 3p photoelectrons by the optical laser and EUV-FEL pulses, which appear only when the two pulses are temporally overlapped. The observed intensities and the angular distributions of sidebands are reasonably reproduced by theoretical simulations by considering the timing jitter between the two pulses. Another examples are the photoelectron angular distributions of CO2 molecules nonadiabatically aligned by optical laser pulses. The observed alignment dependence of the angular distributions is well reproduced by theoretical simulations, which ensures the validity of our time-resolved measurement methodology.

    With an intense femtosecond two-color pulse optimized for the generation of even-order harmonics from CO molecules, we directly measure the actual degrees of orientation by utilizing the Coulomb explosion imaging technique with appropriate probe polarization. We find that the macroscopic orientation of CO molecules is negligible even when significant even-order harmonics are observed. This finding shows that the generation of even-order harmonics cannot be ascribed to the macroscopic orientation of CO molecules. The rotational wave packet of CO molecules created with an intense femtosecond two-color pulse is thought to be in an uninvestigated quantum state, which is beyond the Born-Oppenheimer approximation, without inversion symmetry at any of the three steps of high-order harmonic generation, leading to the generation of even-order harmonics.

    We have developed a spectral interferometer with high accuracy and high stability in order to evaluate the time-dependent polarization state of the third harmonics generated from aligned molecular samples. By using the developed system, we measured the polarization states of the third harmonics generated from aligned CO2 molecules, and found that the polarization state critically depends on the pressure of the sample molecules. The intensity and the ellipticity do not increase monotonically as the pressure increases but show 3-4 phases. A detailed propagation simulation of the pressure dependence will reveal the basic properties of molecules such as components of polarizability and hyperpolarizability.

    Laser-field-free one- and three-dimensional orientation of state-selected asymmetric top molecules has been achieved by rapidly turning off a linearly- and elliptically-polarized laser field, respectively, in a weak electrostatic field. After the success of the proof-of-principle experiment of all-optical molecular orientation with an intense nonresonant two-color laser field, higher degrees of molecular orientation have been achieved with state-selected molecules. Completely field-free molecular orientation can be achieved by rapidly turning off an intense nonresonant two-color laser field with the plasma shutter technique. On the other hand, various new findings have been obtained by observing both intensity and phase spectra of high-order harmonics generated in aligned molecules with carrier-envelope-phase-stabilized femtosecond pulses. The most advanced and sophisticated molecular imaging technique has been developed and the studies on “electronic stereodynamics in molecules” have been successfully opened.

    (1)2波長レーザー光により形成される非対称レーザー電場を用いた分子配向制御手法の開発において、Even-Lavieバルブの導入により試料分子の初期回転温度を下げ、イオドベンゼン(C_6H_5I)分子の配向制御が実現していることの確実な証拠を得た。これにより、初期回転温度の低下による配向度の向上と本手法の汎用性の実証に成功した。 (2)非断熱的に配列した分子に対し、フェムト秒Ti:sapphireレーザー光の基本波と第2高調波の偏光を直交させて照射することによって観測される高調波スペクトルの解析から、N_2,O_2分子などの分子軌道に関する情報を得る新しい分子軌道イメージング手法の開発を進めた。必要な高調波スペクトルの観測と参照用の高調波スペクトルの理論計算を行い、分子軌道に関する情報の抽出法について検討した。 (3)配向した分子を試料とし、高次高調波発生を始めとする「分子内電子の立体ダイナミクス」の研究を推進するためには配向度の高い分子試料の生成が不可欠である。この目的のため、分子の初期回転量子状態を選択できるhexapole focuser(6極集束器)やmolecular deflector(分子偏向器)を組み込んだ装置の設計を行った。 (4)分子の初期回転量子状態を選択した試料に対し、フェムト秒2波長レーザーパルスをその強度やパルス幅を最適化して照射することにより、配向度の十分高い分子試料を生成できることを理論計算により示した。

    (Visible to near infrared spectral range) We have developed a technique of non-collinear optical parametric amplification (NOPA) to generate ultrashort visible pulses. The pulses enable us to observe and analyze ultrafast dynamics of various real-time molecular vibrations whose frequencies are up to 3000 cm^<-1>. The ultrashort pulses have broadband spectrum, therefore the ultrafast dynamics of the real-time molecular vibrations can be observed in the entire broadband spectrum of the laser pulses, which gives the dependence of the ultrafast dynamics on the probe photon energy and clarifies its detailed dynamics. We have developed a multi (128 ch) double lock-in amplifier combined with spectrometer to observe the signal in the entire broadband spectrum of the ultrashort pulses. The multi channel lock-in amplifier can simultaneously measure all of the 128 probe wavelengths, which makes the measurement time 128 times shorter than before. The quick measurement enables to increase the signal to noise (S/N) ratio increased more than 10 times or measure the signal continuously changing parameters in good S/N ratio. Using the ultrashort visible pulses and the multi channel lock-in amplifier, we could observe the real-time signal of the sample in broadband with a fine time resolution, which can resolve the real-time molecular vibration. (Vacuum ultraviolet spectral range) We have developed an original technique to generate ultrashort light pulses in the VUV region by using high-order harmonic generation (HHG) from aligned molecules. First, we have succeeded in the optimal control of multiphoton ionization processes in aligned I_2 molecules with time-dependent polarization pulses. This means that we have developed the most advanced technique to control tunnel ionization which is the first step of HHG. Second, our novel technique to observe both ion yields and harmonic signals under the same experimental conditions enabled us to observe the first clear evidence of quantum interference of electron de Broglie waves in the recombination process, i.e., the third step of HHG from aligned CO_2 molecules. Third, we applied the polarization gate technique to HHG from non-adiabatically aligned N_2 molecules. Contrary to our expectations based on ellipticity dependence of HHG from aligned molecules, we have found that the spectral width of each harmonic tends to be broader when the molecular axis is perpendicular to the major axis of elliptical polarization. Theoretical calculations show that our observations are characteristic of time-dependent polarization pulses. This means that molecular alignment can be used as an important control parameter in addition to the carrier envelope phase when we generate attosecond pulses with polarization gated few-cycle pulses.

    (1)静電場とレーザー電場の併用による分子の配向度の増大 本研究グループでは、レーザー技術に基づいた分子操作と配列あるいは配向した分子試料を用いた応用実験を進めている。分子の配向については、静電場とレーザー電場の併用により、既に1次元的および3次元的な分子の配向が可能であることの原理実証実験に成功した。しかし、配向した試料分子を応用実験に利用するためには、配向の度合いを増大させることが重要である。 昨年度までに、比較的高い静電場強度でも安定に動作する装置を新たに設計・開発し、装置がほぼ設計どおりに動作することを確認した。今年度は、クラスターが形成されにくいHe中に5%に希釈されたOCS分子を試料とし、背圧10気圧、静電場4.4kV/cm、レーザー光のピーク強度4.1x10^<12>W/cm^2の条件で、原理実証実験で得られたよりも高い配向度を実現することに成功した。 (2)分子内量子過程のフィードバック型最適制御技術の高度化と非断熱分子配列への適用 2次元イオン画像をフィードバック用の信号として用いる技術を開発し、非断熱領域の分子配列の最適制御に適用した。N_2分子を試料とし、ポンプ光のエネルギーが一定の条件でhalf revival付近の配列度を最大化するようにフィードバックをかけた。その結果、最適パルスとして単一の超短パルスが得られるときと、強度のほぼ等しいダブルパルス(個々のピーク強度は単一パルスの半分以下)が得られるときがあることが分かった。ダブルパルスの効果について時間依存Schrodinger方程式を数値積分して調べたところ、half revival付近よりもむしろポンプ光入射直後(量子力学的にfull revivalと同等)の配列度の増大に有効であることを示唆する結果が得られた。このため、干渉計を組んで発生させたダブルパルスの時間間隔を変化させて配列度を調べたところ、特定の時間間隔で配列度が極大値を取ることが分かった。この結果は、数値計算の結果と定性的に一致するものであった。

    本年度は特に、静電場とレーザー電場の併用による分子の頭と尻尾を区別した配列制御の実現を目指して研究を進め、実際に明確な証拠を観測することに成功した。実験では、昨年度開発した装置を飛行時間型(Time-Of-Flight : TOF)イオン分析モードで使用し、その特性を最大限利用した。上記の手法の静電場としてイオンの加速電場を、レーザー電場としてナノ秒Nd : YAGレーザーの基本波を用いた。プローブ用フェムト秒チタンサファイアレーザー光の偏光方向をTOF軸と平行にして入射した場合、フラグメントイオンには一般にその初速度が検出器方向かあるいは反対方向かに対応してforward成分とbackward成分が現れる(TOFスペクトル)。Nd : YAGレーザー光を照射しない時は、TOFスペクトルの形状はほぼ対称であり、分子がランダムな方向を向いている結果と解釈できる。一方、Nd : YAGレーザ光を照射すると、TOFスペクトルに明らかな非対称性が観測された。これは、試料分子が配列を起こした結果と解釈できる。実際、この非対称性は試料分子の電気陰性度に関する簡単な考察から予想されるものと一致した。配列度を決める3つのパラメータは、レーザー光の強度と静電場の大きさと分子の回転温度である。実験でも、レーザー光や静電場を強くしたり、分子の回転温度を下げることにより配列度を大きくできることを確認した。今回、試料分子として、主にOCSを用いたが、OCSと比べると条件の悪いHClについても同様の効果を確認した。 上記の実験と理論との比較のため、シュレーディンガー方程式を数値的に解くための計算コードの開発を並行して進めた。分子の回転周期に比べて配列がゆっくり進む断熱領域における計算結果は上記の実験結果を支持するものであった。さらに、非断熱領域における配列過程の時間発展を調べるための計算コードの開発も行った。

    前年度に開発したクラスター源を用い、本年度は、高強度レーザー電場による配向制御のクラスターへの適用可能性を調べた。特に、希ガス原子で構成されるvan der Waals二量体Rg_2について配向の度合を系統的に調べ、同じピーク強度のレーザー光を用いた場合、Ar_2、Kr_2、Xe_2の順に配向の度合が大きくなることを見出した。観測された配向度の大きさは、分極率の異方性Δαの大きさを反映している。また、Δαが既知のヨウ素分子についても配向の度合を測定し、さらに、独自に開発した数値シミュレーションコードを利用することによって、Rg_2の分極率の異方性Δαを定量的に評価することに初めて成功した。 さらに、Rg_2の多光子イオン化過程を詳細に調べるため、フェムト秒レーザー光の時間幅を変えながら解離生成物の速度分布を測定した。多くの二原子分子では、時間幅が長くなるにつれて原子間距離が伸び、enhanced ionizationの効果を反映して解離生成物がレーザーの偏光方向に大きく偏って分布する。これに対し、Rg_2では、レーザー光の時間幅が長くなっても原子間距離はほとんど変わらずenhanced ionizationの効果は見られないが、解離生成物の分布が徐々に偏光方向に偏ることを明らかにした。これはRg_2の非断熱的な配向に対応すると考えられる。 一方、分子の配向・配列技術の発展として、三次元的な構造をもつ分子の配列可能性を検証した。楕円偏光したレーザー電場と静電場を併用することにより、3,4-dibromothiophene分子を三次元的に配列させることに成功した。
