11. Texture and formation process of jasper, ‘Nishiki-ishi’ from Tsugaru region, Japan Peer-reviewed

Nishiki-ishi is a kind of jasper and shows mixed bright red, yellow-brown, green, and black colors. It occurs in Tsugaru region, Aomori Prefecture Japan and has been used for ornaments. Most of the raw stones are usually collected at shingle beaches, and few outcrops of the jasper are found out. Therefore, the occurrence of Nishiki-ishi has not been reported in detail. To elucidate the formation process of Nishiki-ishi, we observed textures of the rocks and minerals by optical and electron microscopes, Raman spectroscopy and analyzed the chemical compositions of minerals by an electron micro-probe analyzer.
Nishiki-ishi were collected from two localities: Aoiwa, Nakadomari-machi, Kita-Tsugaru and Tappi-zaki, Sotogahama, Higashi-Tsugaru, Aomori Prefecture, Japan. It mainly consists of mixtures of micro-crystalline and crypto-crystalline quartz, opal-CT and iron-containing minerals.
Its colors are caused by iron-containing minerals; hematite (red), celadonite (green), goethite (yellow), siderite (yellow), pyrite (black), and marcasite (black). These iron-containing minerals, which exhibit needle-like or granular forms, are included as fine grains in quartz crystal and fill boundaries among the quartz crystals.
The macroscopic structure of Nishiki-ishi is breccia-like or clastic. In the texture, breccia fragments show yellow or red colors, and green and black parts filled up the space between breccia fragments. Yellow-brown and red color parts of Nishiki-ishi have flamboyant and mosaic (jigsaw) textures, which consist of micro-quartz and optically length-slow type spherules of quartz. Black and green color parts are also composed of opal-CT, chalcedony, and micro-quartz. These features are considerable differences of quartz textures between in brecciated fragments and at the matrix among brecciated fragments. Nishiki-ishi was formed by silicification of volcanic rocks during volcanic activity. After the silicified rocks brecciated, quartz and chalcedony precipitated in the breccia.

Metastable phases of silica minerals, which are opal, cristobalite, moganite, melanophlogite, chibaite, etc, precipitate under low-temperature hydrothermal solutions. The metastable silica minerals change to the stable phase quartz. After the phase transition, the crystal shapes remain intact, and pseudomorphs after the metastable minerals are observed. We carried out crystallographical analyses for the textures of the pseudomorphs after the metastable minerals by using scanning and transmission electron microscopes and EBSD method.

The compression behavior of distorted rutile-type hydrous minerals has attracted much interest because of their high stability under high-pressure conditions. We performed an X-ray diffraction experiment of synthetic guyanaite (β-CrOOH) with distorted rutile-type structure up to 6 GPa at 300-700 K. The data of P-V-T was fitted to a second-order Birch-Murnaghan EoS with following parameters: bulk modulus KT0 = 191±20 GPa, volumetric thermal expansion coefficient α = (3.3±1.5)×10-5 K-1.

Spinel structure has two important sites; tetrahedral T-site and octahedral M-site. In the spinel series minerals, there is a relationship between the equilibration temperature and T-O and M-O lengths. The purpose of this study is tried to estimate the equilibration temperature of a natural spinel from Madagascar using T-O and M-O lengths. The chemical formula of this sample was determined as Mg0.94Fe0.04Al2.00O4 by EPMA analysis. Main crystallographic information were obtained by single crystal X-ray diffraction measurement as follows: the lattice constant (a) was 8.0915(6) Å, the oxygen fractional coordinates (u) was 0.26363(4). And the equilibration temperatures calculated from T-O and M-O lengths, which were corrected for the effect of iron, were 561 K and 585 K, respectively.

Montmorillonite (MT) is a rare mineral with which crystal structure analyses has not yet been achieved, though it is a very familiar mineral. Its single crystallization was tried using a high purity MT powder prepared by Keizo Suzuki (Hokkaido Univ.).After holding the MT (25-75wt%H2O) at 5.5GPa and 1700 °C for 1 hour, it processed by various cooling processes. The recovered samples were observed by OM. SEM and XRD. A part of them was investigated by the X-ray single crystal oscillation method.By quenching (〜1000 °C/min) from 1700 °C, MT crystals in the form of needle and in irregular forms were obtained. However, MT might not be stable even at low temperature, since it decomposed into the anhydrous silicates by slow cooling and by re-heating (>400 °C) after quenching to the room temperature. The present results suggest an availability to obtain MT single crystals for an X-ray sutructure analysis.

Three kinds of superstructures of wollastonite were synthesized. The two among three are twice as large as the basic structure. However, they have different structures. One has the stacking of the two basic-wollastonite units with b/2 displacement. The other has the two non-displacement units of the basic wollastonite. The third superstructure is four times as large as the basic structure. It has the four non-displacement units of the basic wollastonite.

Growth textures and twin boundary structures of quartz twinned after Japan Law were studied by observations of etch figures and cathode luminescence, and molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. Near the composition plane of Japanese twin, hourglass-shaped sectors are observed to have mosaic textures composed of polysynthetic Brazil twin. This sector corresponds to a growth sector of {10-11} or {01-11}, where the composition plane is smooth and flat {11-22}.From the MD simulations, it is shown that {11-22} is the only composition plane that does not incorporate dislocations, and that dislocations are not required at a junction of Japanese and Brazil twin boundaries. These facts indicate that {11-22} composition plane of Japanese twin serve as a source of Brazil twin during the course of growth.

High-pressure single crystal X-ray diffraction experiments and FT-IR observations of natural chondrodite, synthesized OH-chondrodite and phase A have been conducted. FT-IR observations of natural chondrodite showed that the peaks shifted to lower wave-numbers with increasing pressure. This suggested that hydrogen bonding would be formed in its structure under highpressure conditions.
As results from X-ray diffraction experiments under high-pressure conditions, bulk moduli of these minerals were determined and their crystal structures were refined. The relationships between bulk modulus and packing index and summation of the filling factor for humite minerals and some DHMS phases were plotted on a simple positive line, respectively. Also, as results from structural refinements under high-pressure conditions, the polyhedral bulk moduli were obtained. Compression mechanism of humite minerals was controlled by the octahedral compression mainly.

This study took on the challenge of elucidating water in the lower mantle using state-of-the-art high-pressure experiments, synchrotron radiation X-ray diffraction, neutron diffraction techniques, and analytical techniques. In particular, we focused on the study of "hydrous bridgmanite," a stable high-pressure hydrous phase widely existed in the Earth's deep interior, to elucidate the transport of water into the lower mantle and its storage capacity. As a result, the importance of substitution of Al in deep Earth minerals was clarified, and the substitution mechanism strongly depends on the crystal structure (coordination number) of deep Earth minerals.

We investigated the structure and properties of deep-Earth materials. We developed experimental techniques in collaboration with the A01-3 Group, using high pressure-temperature ultrasonic methods to measure the elastic wave velocities of hydrous and non-hydrous phases in the Earth's mantle. Moreover, we measured the velocities of silicate glasses, magmas, and metallic liquids under high pressure and temperature to study the heterogeneous structure of the Earth's deep interior. We conducted melting experiments on mantle materials under high pressure, and developed a model that attribute the chemical heterogeneity of the mantle to the transportation of ultrabasic magmas. Through the investigation of the solubility of nitrogen in silicate minerals at high pressure, we revealed that stishovite contains higher amounts of nitrogen compared to other minerals. Based on these experimental results, we proposed a new model for stishovite-transported nitrogen in the Earth's mantle and core.

We have explored the possible existence of water in the deep Earth by using the techniques of the state-of-the-art high-pressure synthesis experiment, synchrotron X-ray in situ observation and neutron scattering experiment. As the result, it became clear that bridgmanite, which is the most abundant mineral in the lower mantle, can contain significant amounts of water in its crystal structure. The fact was confirmed by chemical compositional change, possible existence of hydrogen and lattice constant change by single crystal X-ray diffraction, the detection of OH vibration peak by IR spectroscopy, the detection of hydrogen position by neutron diffraction, and the changes of physical properties such as bulk modulus. Furthermore, it became clarified that the similar substitution can occur in superhydrous phase B and phase D, which are the other high-pressure hydrous phases in the deep mantle.

Water in the Earth has been transported from the oceans into its deep interior, where it forms hydrous deep mantle minerals. Wadsleyite and ringwoodite have been considered as the two most important host minerals incorporating this type of water as hydroxyl groups. To constrain the capacity of water in their structures and also to understand the effect of such water on their physical properties, it is essential to quantitatively determine the sites and occupancies of hydrogen in their structures. We thus conducted neutron time-of-flight Laue single crystal diffraction studies of synthetic crystals of them. Single crystals, which have size and quality suitable for the method, were synthesized by a newly-developed slow-cooling method at the relevant high pressure and temperature conditions. The structures of two hydrous minerals have been successfully determined in very high resolution in space.

Single crystal X-ray diffraction studies on delta-AlOOH were conducted to clarify its structural change under high-pressure conditions. Around 8 GPa, the pressure induced phase transition was observed, which is second order phase transition. The space group was changed from P21nm to Pnnm. The evolutions of axial ratio (a/c and b/c) with pressure were significantly changed around the phase transition pressure. Structure determination of the post-transition phase was successful, and the O-O distance related to hydrogen bonding was significantly compressed with pressure. This findings shows that the hydrogen bonding in delta-AlOOH was made more strengthen. As the results, hydrogen in the post-transition phase was arranged disorderly between its two equivalent sites. Hydrogen bonding does not show the hydrogen bonding symmetrization strictly up to 8 GPa.

We researched about precipitation processes of low-crystallinity minerals, which have crystal structure with numerous defects, from low temperature solution on the basis of observations for their textures and occurrence. The low-crystallinity mineral, which precipitates under metastable condition or out of stable region, are major in mineral species on the earth, and contribute to the diversity of minerals. It is considered that origins of the metastable phase were effects of impurity and interface energy. We will propose a new model for nucleation process of low-crystallinity minerals.

More and more application of neutron diffraction technique is expected in the field of mineral physics in the near future. Crystallographic information about hydrogen positions in some important hydrous minerals was successfully obtained in quite wide range of pressure-temperature conditions. These could give some new insights of hydrogen positions in some mantle minerals, a pressure-induced hydrogen-bond symmetrization mechanism, the relationship between specific thermal expansion and dynamical behavior of hydrogen atoms, and the relationship between cationic substitution and hydrogen positions in some crustal minerals.

Sets of X-ray diffraction intensities up to 7.9 GPa of a single crystal of 35x35x24 micron hydrous ringwoodite Mg_<1.97>SiH_<0.06>O_4, synthesized by Ohtani and Mizobata (1998) using a multi-anvil apparatus at conditions of 1680 ℃ and 22 GPa were measured using synchrotron radiation at the beam line BL-10A, Photon Factory, High Energy Accelerator Research Organization, Tukuba, Japan. The modified Merrill-Bassett type diamond anvil pressure cell was used. The 4:1 fluid mixture of methanol and ethanol was used for pressure medium. The compressibility of the unit cell is close to the compressibility of the MO_6 octahedron. The mean Si-O distance stay almost constant up to 7.9 GPa. The compression of the crystal structure is governed by the compression of MO_6 octahedron. This is consistent to the fact that the bulk modulus is affected significantly by the substitution of Mg by 2H. The octahedral shared edges are compressed more than the unshared edges, keeping the edge lengths of SiO_4 tetrahedron almost constant. The space group and hydrogen positions of δ-(Al_<0.84>4Mg_<0.07>Si_<0.09>)OOH are investigated using a single crystal synthesized using a multi-anvil apparatus under conditions of 1000 ℃ and 21 GPa. The space group determined by single-crystal x-ray diffraction is to Pnn2, with unit cell parameters of a=4.6975(8)Å, b=4.2060(6)Å, c=2.8327(4)Å, and V=55.97(1)Å^3. Partial occupancy of the Al site by Mg and Si suggests the possibility of a limited solid solution between δ-AlOOH, stishovite, and a hypothetical CaCl_2-type Mg(OH)_2 that is 16% denser than brucite. Difference Fourier maps reveal two small but significant Fourier peaks attributable to hydrogen atoms. Atomic distances and angles around the first peak indicate a hydrogen bond with O【triple bond】O distances of 2.511Å, while those around the second peak are suggestive of a bifurcated hydrogen bond with O【triple bond】O distances of 2.743Å and 2.743Å.

Structure and property of some hydrous phases whose stability field correspond to that of upper mantle of the earth have been studied. It was found that there is probably continuous solid solution between hydrous and anhydrous wadsleyite. Small degree of Mg-Si disorder was found in the structure of hydrous ringwoodite. With increasing pressure, shifts of OH-stretching vibration band to higher wave numbers were observed in phlogopite, while shifts of OH-stretching vibration band to lower wave numbers were observed in muscovite. Structural behaviors of phase A and chondrodite under pressure were found to be similar to that of forsterite.
