    This systematic review aimed to determine how cellulose nanofiber (CNF) enhance the mechanical properties, biocompatibility, and functional versatility of dental materials, based on in vitro evidence. A systematic review protocol was developed according to PRISMA 2020. The literature search was conducted using MEDLINE/PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, Scopus, and Embase for English-language publications with no date restrictions, yielding 180 publications. After removing duplicates, 150 remained, from which 23 were evaluated in full. 17 in vitro studies met the inclusion criteria, of which 13 had a low risk of bias, 4 had a moderate risk, and none had a high risk. Across all included investigations, CNF consistently improved mechanical performance, particularly flexural and compressive strength, while maintaining or enhancing biocompatibility in various cell culture models. CNF's nanofibrillar structure and modifiable surface chemistry also expanded its functional versatility, enabling applications such as drug encapsulation and targeted antimicrobial delivery. Overall, CNF emerges as a promising biomaterial for modern dentistry, offering superior mechanical reinforcement, favorable cell responses, and wide-ranging functional modifications. Further in vivo research and clinical trials are necessary to confirm its long-term safety and efficacy, thereby facilitating the translation of these in vitro findings into standard dental practice.

    Elucidate the dicalcium phosphate dihydrate (DCPD)-coated-beta-tricalcium phosphate (β-TCP) porous granules osteoinductivity performance in adipose-derived mesenchymal stem cells (ADMSCs). β-TCP porous was made by adding the sodium chloride (NaCl) powders with the dry powder of DCPD and CaCO3 in the concentrations 40:60 (by wt%). Then, DCPD layer will be formed on porous β-TCP granules by immersing the granules in an acidic calcium phosphate solution. ADMSCs cultured was used to examine the biocompability of 300-600 µm and 600-1,000 µm DCPD-coated-porous β-TCP by means of microculture tetrazolium technique (MTT assay) and scratch assay. Bone morphogenic protein-2 (BMP-2), Osterix, Runt-related transcription factor-2 (Runx2), Alkaline phosphatase (ALP), Osteopontin, Osteonectin expression were investigated. The DCPD-coated porous β-TCP granules were culture together with ADMSCs is biocompatible. BMP-2, Runx2, Osterix, ALP, Osteopontin, Osteonectin expression in ADMSCs after culture together with DCPD-coated-β-TCP significantly enhanced. DCPD-coated-porous-β-TCP granules have good biocompatibility and high osteoconductivity in ADMSCs.

    BACKGROUND: Achieving optimal color control in chairside CAD/CAM ultra-thin veneers, remains a significant challenge for dental clinicians and technicians. This study aims to investigate the effect of ultra-thin CAD/CAM medium translucency (MT) lithium disilicate veneers and tooth-colored resin substrates on final tooth shade and whiteness. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Disk-shaped ceramic veneers (IPS e.max CAD MT, Ivoclar Vivadent, Liechtenstein) with a thickness of 0.3 mm were fabricated in BL2, BL3, BL4, B1, A1, A2, and A3 shades. Additionally, 4-mm thick resin substrates (Tetric N-Ceram, Ivoclar Vivadent, Liechtenstein) were prepared in A2, A3, A3.5, and A4 shades to simulate tooth-colored substrates. Veneer-resin composites were prepared by combining veneer specimens and resin substrates. Color coordinates of tooth-colored resin substrates (R), veneer-resin composites (C) and the shade guide tabs (G) were obtained using a spectroradiometer. Color differences of ΔE00(C-R), ΔE00(C-G) and ΔE00(R-G) were then calculated with the CIEDE2000 formula. The initial and final shades were considered matched when ΔE00(R-G) or ΔE00(C-G) was clinically acceptable or minimal. Additionally, whiteness differences (ΔWID) between R and C specimens were recorded. Two-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) was performed, followed by the Tukey HSD. The significance level was set at p < 0.05. RESULTS: Both the shades of resin substrates and veneer shades had significant effects on ΔE00(C-R) and ΔWID (p < 0.001), while no interaction effects were observed (p > 0.05). They increased with darker resin substrates and lighter veneers, except for no significant differences among BL4, B1, and A1 veneers. The largest color difference was observed for BL2 veneers on A4 substrates (ΔE00(C-R) = 6.9 ± 0.3, ΔWID = 19.0 ± 1.5), while the smallest occurred with A3 veneers on A2 substrates (ΔE00(C-R) = 2.4 ± 0.6, ΔWID = 5.6 ± 1.0). Final tooth shades were maximally transformed to lighter shades, with A2, A3, A3.5, and A4 substrates shifting to 2M1, 2L1.5, 2R2.5, and 3L1.5, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: Both resin substrates and veneer shades significantly influence final tooth shade and whiteness independently. 0.3-mm thick CAD/CAM MT lithium disilicate veneers produce substantial shade and whiteness transformations, making them effective for shade enhancement.

    Physical stimulation, which is a key factor affecting the metabolism of osteoblasts and their precursor cells, plays an important role in bone remodeling; however, the role of micro-vibrations in osteoblast differentiation is unclear. In the present study, we determined the effects of frequency-regulated repeated micro-vibration (FRMV) on cell proliferation and established a method to induce osteoblast differentiation through FRMV using the mouse pre-osteoblast-like cell line MC3T3-E1, which is widely used in bone metabolism research. The results indicated that FRMV significantly influenced the proliferation of MC3T3-E1 cells in a normal growth medium. FRMV at 42.2 Hz significantly promoted proliferation, whereas FRMV at 92.1 Hz showed no effect on the proliferation rate. Moreover, FRMV at 42.2 Hz significantly increased alkaline phosphatase (ALP) enzyme activity and ALP gene expression in MC3T3-E1 cells. Treatment with LDN193189, a bone morphogenetic protein (BMP) signaling inhibitor, revealed that the FRMV-induced upregulation in ALP enzyme activity and ALP gene expression were significantly suppressed in MC3T3-E1 cells. The results suggest that the FRMV protocol developed in the present study induces osteoblast differentiation through the BMP signaling pathway. Thus, FRMV may contribute to the development of effective bone regeneration technologies.

    C-H dissociation and C-C coupling are two key steps in converting CH4 into multi-carbon compounds. Here we report a synergy of Au and Ag to greatly promote C2 H6 formation over Au1 Ag single-atom alloy nanoparticles (Au1 Ag NPs)-modified ZnO catalyst via photocatalytic oxidative coupling of methane (POCM) with O2 and H2 O. Atomically dispersed Au in Au1 Ag NPs effectively promotes the dissociation of O2 and H2 O into *OOH, promoting C-H activation of CH4 on the photogenerated O- to form *CH3 . Electron-deficient Au single atoms, as hopping ladders, also facilitate the migration of electron donor *CH3 from ZnO to Au1 Ag NPs. Finally, *CH3 coupling can readily occur on Ag atoms of Au1 Ag NPs. An excellent C2 H6 yield of 14.0 mmol g-1  h-1 with a selectivity of 79 % and an apparent quantum yield of 14.6 % at 350 nm is obtained via POCM with O2 and H2 O, which is at least two times that of the photocatalytic system. The bimetallic synergistic strategy offers guidance for future catalyst design for POCM with O2 and H2 O.

    PURPOSE: This study aimed to determine the effects of denture adhesives on denture retention and occlusal force in complete denture wearers in a multicenter, randomized, parallel-group controlled trial. METHODS: Two hundred edentulous patients wearing complete dentures were allocated to three groups: powder-type denture adhesive, cream-type denture adhesive, and control (saline solution). Denture adhesives and saline solution were applied to the dentures for 4 days. The retentive force of the dentures and occlusal force were measured using a force transducer occlusal force meter at baseline and after 4 days of intervention. In addition to between-group comparisons, subgroup analyses of denture retention and occlusal force were performed based on the level of difficulty of the edentulism treatment. The levels were ranked as I (easy), II, III, and IV (difficult). RESULTS: Cream-type denture adhesives significantly improved the retentive force of the dentures (P<0.01) and occlusal force (P<0.05), with no significant differences between baseline and post-intervention forces in the powder-type denture adhesive and control groups. In within-group comparisons, cream-type denture adhesives improved both the retentive and occlusal forces at Level II (P<0.05), and powder-type denture adhesives improved the occlusal force at Level II (P<0.01). CONCLUSIONS: Application of cream-type denture adhesives effectively improves the denture retention and occlusal force in complete denture wearers with a moderate degree of difficulty during edentulism treatment.

    Zirconia-based bioceramic is a potential material for dental implants developed and introduced in dentistry 30 years ago. However, some limitations still exist for zirconia implants caused by several factors, such as manufacturing difficulties, low-temperature degradation (LTD), long-term stability, and clinical experience. Several studies validated that some subtle changes on the zirconia surface might significantly impact its mechanical properties and osseointegration. Thus, attention was paid to the effect of surface modification of zirconia implants. This review generally summarizes the surface modifications of zirconia implants to date classified as physical treatment, chemical treatment, and surface coating, aiming to give an overall perspective based on the current situation. In conclusion, surface modification is an effective and essential method for zirconia implant application. However, before clinical use, we need more knowledge about these modification methods.

    The number of complete denture wearers will rise with the increase in the elderly population. Long-term use of ill-fitting dentures causes mechanical injury and deformation of the basal seat mucosa. Tissue conditioners are used to restore the deformed unhealthy basal seat mucosa and to return it to the normal position by distributing the load applied at mastication. However, the main problem with this material is that the plasticizer will gradually leach out causing the material to harden. Therefore in this study, we examined the influence of different solutions on the dynamic viscoelasticity, surface roughness and compliance. We used a new tissue conditioner &ldquo;TissueCare&rdquo; (TC) and 3 commercial tissue conditioners; COE-Comfort (CC), Shofu Tissue Conditioner II (STC) and Bosworth Softone (BST). Distilled water, artificial sali-va and cottonseed oil were used for the solution. The dynamic viscoelasticity was most stable over time with material TC. Surface roughness was most stable over time with STC. Artificial saliva had the largest effect on the surface roughness of materials. TC satisfied ISO standard, and it was classified in class II of the low initial compliance. The influence of solution and immersion time on the dynamic viscoelasticity, sur-face roughness and compliance of the material was different. The results suggest that the new tissue conditioner &ldquo;TissueCare&rdquo; is extremely durable, and should be used clinically mainly for temporary relining.

    The purpose of this study was to determine the influence of sericin powder on absorption and solubility of tissue conditioners. The absorption was increased with increased of the sericin powder content. The significant difference was found among the materials in the absorption. In the solubility, no significant difference was found among the materials. The samples contain sericin powder of higher molecular weight (M_w) showed lower absorption than contain lower M_w sericin powder samples. The results suggest that the absorption and solubility of tissue conditioners were greatly influenced by the addition of the sericin powder to the component of these materials.

    The purpose of this study was to determine the influence of components on the water sorption and solubility of trial tissue conditioners. Two kinds of new plasticizer (DEHM and DIAA) were used for component of liquid of tissue conditioner. Significant difference were found among the materials in the water sorption and solubility (p<0.05). The results suggest that the water sorption and solubility of tissue conditioners were greatly influenced by the component of these materials. From the standpoint of water sorption and solubility, development of tissue conditioners using new plasticizer's might be possible.

    The purpose of this study was to determine the influence of sericin powder on dynamic viscoelasticity and durability of tissue conditioners. A significant difference was found among the materials in the initial dynamic viscoelasticity. The results suggest that the dynamic viscoelasticity and durability of tissue conditioners were greatly influenced by the addition of the sericin powder to the component of these materials. From the standpoint of dynamic viscoelasticity and durability, the optimal amount (less than 3wt%) is necessary for the addition of sericin powder to the component of tissue conditioners.

    This study evaluated influence of ultraviolet rays on dynamic mechanical properties of silicone maxillofacial prosthetic materials. The ultraviolet rays (312nm, 364nm) and sunshine were applied to the materials for 0, 500, 1000 and 1500 hours. The materials with no application of ultraviolet rays and sunshine were also used as control. Storage modulus, loss modulus and loss tangent at 1 Hz were measured. The results suggested that ultraviolet rays and sunshine deteriorated the silicone maxillofacial prosthetic materials.

    我々は最近、神経分化モデルPC12細胞やその派生株(PC12-P1F1)に対し周波数制御式反復微細振動(FRMV)依存的に神経細胞分化を誘導する方法を考案した。しかしその分子機序は不明であり、他の細胞分化モデルへの汎用性の検討も不十分であった。本年度研究ではFRMV研究の効率的な推進のため、FRMVによる神経細胞分化誘導機構の更なる解明を目指した検討を行った。更にFRMVの汎用性の検討のため、FRMVによる骨芽細胞分化誘導法に関する技術的検討も行った。 [方法]神経細胞分化誘導については、これまでに確立したFRMVをPC12-P1F1細胞に負荷し分化を誘導した。その際、細胞内シグナル経路を構成するERK1/2、p38およびJNK経路のシグナル阻害剤を作用させ、同細胞におけるFRMV依存的神経細胞分化誘導機構にこれら経路が関与する可能性を検討した。骨芽細胞分化誘導モデルとしてMC3T3-E1細胞を播種したプレートを微細振動装置にセットし、分化を誘導するため、設定可能な範囲で種々の条件のFRMV処理を行った。アルカリホスファターゼアッセイを用いて骨芽細胞分化を定量的に評価した。 [成果]FRMVがPC12-P1F1細胞の神経突起伸長を誘導する細胞内シグナル経路は不明であったが、ERK及びp38K経路の阻害剤(U0126およびSB203580)によりFRMV依存的な神経突起伸長が抑制されることから、両経路が必須の役割を担うことが示唆された。一方、JNK経路の阻害剤SP600125を用いた実験により、FRMV依存的神経突起伸長が促進されたことから、同阻害剤もFRMV依存的な神経細胞分化誘導の制御に有用であることが示唆された。また、MC3T3-E1細胞を用いた実験系では、神経細胞分化に適用した条件とは異なる刺激条件にてFRMVが骨芽細胞分化誘導にも有効である可能性が実験系により示された。

    TiNコーティングは, 硬度, 耐摩耗性, 耐食性等に優れ, 審美的な金色を呈すること, さらに抗菌性や生体親和性も期待されるため, 歯科インプラントアバットメント表面の機能向上にも適していると考えられる. しかし, 従来の成膜法(PVD法, CVD法等)では, アバットメントのような複雑な立体構造体への応用は難しく, 成膜プロセス上の煩雑さ, 安全面やコスト面においても様々な問題が残されている. マイクロ波ドライプロセスTiNコーティング法は,圧力や雰囲気置換を行わない大気中においてTiN形成が可能という独自性を持ち, 安価で簡便なプロセスであり, アバットメントへの応用に適している. 本研究は, 硬度, 耐摩耗性, 耐食性, 審美性, 細胞動態および軟組織封鎖性という観点から, マイクロ波ドライプロセスTiNコーティング法のアバットメント表面における最適成膜条件の探索を行い, トランスレーショナルリサーチの展開へ向けての基盤を形成する. 今年度は, 市販のアバットメントへの応用を想定した試料の作製・材料学的評価を進めた. Ti6Al4円盤(直径5mm, 厚さ1mm)にマイクロ波ドライプロセスによるTiNコーティングを施した試料を作製した. 反応時間は10分とし, 800℃, 850℃, 900℃, 950℃, 1000℃の反応温度でコーティングを施した. SEM像では全ての反応温度において波模様の微細構造を認めた. XRD分析の結果からは, 反応温度が高いほど窒化が進行しており, 950℃, 1000℃でTiNを認めた. この結果, 市販のアバットメントへの成膜条件として, 上記の反応温度が妥当であることが確認された.

    In this study, we performed basic research on the use of cellulose nanofibers (CNFs) as dental materials. Hydrophobization, pressurization conditions and biocompatibility of CNF have been investigated. 1. The mechanical strength was enhanced by increasing the pressure during fabrication process. 2. Although the chemically hydrophobized CNFs could improve surface wettability, they showed higher water-absorption than acrylic resins.3. Using the infrared spectroscopy correlation table, it suggests that hydrophilic functional groups on the CNF surface have been replaced with hydrophobic ones. 4. The cytotoxicity test showed that the cell viability of CNF did not meet the ISO standard of 70% which indicates non-cytotoxicity. 5. According to the sensitization test, CNF samples showed no any inflammatory reaction and no sensitization reactions which is represented the delayed allergic reactions.

    The purpose of this study was to establish a method for providing a graded structure to zirconia material to improve its bioactivity and mechanical properties, and to conduct basic research leading to the development of highly functional dental zirconia materials. In this study, the effects of various treatments and bioactive substances on the surface of zirconia on the proliferation and differentiation of osteoblasts and gingival fibroblasts were investigated, as well as their cytotoxicity. The results showed that electrochemical treatment can improve the bioactivity of the material surface, and that the bioactive substances positively affect the differentiation and proliferation of osteoblasts and promote the differentiation of gingival fibroblasts with a certain level of antibacterial activity and no cytotoxicity. These results contribute to the development of high-performance dental zirconia materials.

    Osteoblasts are extremely important for bone remodeling processes. Previously, we found a method to induce neurite outgrowth of rat PC12 cells in a temperature-controlled repeated thermal stimulation (TRTS)-dependent manner using a heating plate that is capable of controlling the medium temperature. However, few studies have examined the effect of the TRTS on the osteoblastic differentiation. The present study investigated the effects of the TRTS on the osteoblastic differentiation in murine pre-osteoblastic MC3T3-E1 cells. We clarified the effects of the TRTS on growth rates, alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activity and alizarin red staining (as a marker of osteoblast maturation). These results suggest that TRTS can induce the osteoblastic differentiation in the cells and might offer an effective and novel technique for bone regeneration.

    The aim was to evaluate the basic mechanical properties of a pure cellulose nanofiber (CNF) specimen compared with a commercial denture base material (PMMA acrylic resin). Pure CNF specimens fabricated under various conditions were examined. The flexural strength (FS) and flexural modulus (FM) values of the specimens were measured by a three-point bending test. The morphologies of the fractured surfaces were examined using SEM. The hydrophobic treatment with an anionic surface sizing agent did not improve their water absorption. The hydrophobic specimens with substitution by methanol favorably affected the mechanical properties of the CNFs. The pure CNF specimen fabricated under particular conditions had higher FS and FM values than the control, which suggests that CNFs have potential as a "petroleum-free" alternative to acrylic resin denture base materials. The pure CNF is potentially useful as a denture base material, which is assumed to be applicable to CAD/CAM.

    本研究期間においては,歯科用インプラント材料として用いられるチタンおよびジルコニア表面において,骨芽細胞が「良好な」形態形成を示すことに直接関与する分子の特定を目的としている.物質表面に対する細胞接着には,細胞外基質とこれに対する受容体である細胞膜タンパクの結合が必要である.これまでの研究から,細胞接着に主要因子とされるインテグリンはハイドロキシアパタイト上への接着には重要であったがインプラント材料として頻用されるチタンにおいては必須ではないことが明らかにされている.さらに我々の知見では,ジルコニアおよびチタン上での細胞接着はインテグリンのみでは不十分であり,特にヘパラン硫酸プロテオグリカン(Heparan sulfate proteoglycan : HSPG)の関与が示唆された.HSPGには膜貫通型のSyndecan, GPIアンカー型のGlypican,分泌型のSerglycineやPerlecanが存在するため,分子種の絞り込みが必要である.一方,我々のこれまでの研究成果では,ジルコニア表面に対する骨芽細胞の接着はEDTAおよびヘパリンにより阻害されることから,Laminin結合タンパクの関与が疑われていた.この条件に適合するHPSGはSyndecanファミリーであったため,詳しい分子種の特定を目的としてRNAiによるスクリーニングを行っている.現在,有望なSyndecanファミリー遺伝子についてOff-target効果の排除などを含めて裏付けを進めているところである.

    It is desirable that the denture patients who have severe alveolar bone loss are supplied with one soft denture liners with the multi-function of tissue conditioning, dynamic impression taking and long-term soft lining. The purpose of current study is to develop light-polymerized and multi-function soft denture liner having self-cleaning and mucosa-healing acceleration functions. Relationship between the composition and dynamic viscoelastic properties during setting, and influence of monomers on osteoclast differentiation were mainly determined during the period of this research. The monomers and plasticizers that would be effective in the liquids composition were determined. The results obtained in the present study would contribute to the development of the new type of multi-function soft denture liner.

    To investigate the efficacy of denture adhesives, randomized controlled clinical trial was carried out in ten multi-center institutions. As an intermediate result, no significant difference has been observed between the experimental groups and control group, in terms of objective and subjective outcomes. The trial targeted 300subjects as sample size and yet 49% has been achieved. The lack of statistical power may have affect the intermediate results.

    Many elderly denture patients have dry mouth and severe alveolar resorption. Thus, most of them do not wear the dentures due to decubitus ulcer and redness of denture intaglio surface. The purpose of this study is development of a mouth moisturizer using the colloidal platinum with antioxidative effect and chymase inhibitor. Rheological properties, adhesion strength and biocompatibility were mainly evaluated in the present study. Although additional evaluation of the function of mucous membrane damage healing would be necessary, rheological properties, adhesion strength and biocompatibility of mouth moisturizers were unraveled.

    The purpose of this study was to development of oral care material include crude drug which can prevention and treatment of denture stomatitis, dry-mouth and so on. In this study we investigated the influence of component on the mechanical properties and angiogenesis of oral care materials. The results suggest that the the durability of oral care materials can improve by combination of components of materials from viewpoint of viscoelasticity; and the angiogenesis was greatly influenced by the components of oral care materials. From this results, it is possible to produced crude drug active ingredient formulated oral care materials. It is indicated that the denture stomatitis and dry mouth can prevented and treated by this materials.

    The purpose of this research is to develop a fluorinated tissue conditioner with high durability and healing acceleration function by bioactive substances. The gelation characteristics, dynamic viscoelastic properties, their changes with time, solubility of components, and cytotoxicity were evaluated. The liquid component that showed high cytotoxicity was determined. The problems of current tissue conditioners were discussed. The system of three dimensional culture by gingival epithelia cell and gingival fibroblast was also developed. Subsequently, the efficacy of fluorinated monomers and healing acceleration were examined. The fluorinated monomers produced the materials having higher durability.

    This research aimed at development of the plants component combination oral care products with decrudescence effect of dry mouth and halitosis deodorization effect. In this study, we determined the influence of natural plant ceramide from pineapple and Tian Cha ectract BGW on the decrudescence effect of dry mouth and halitosis deodorization effect. The natural plant ceramide suggested possibility having a humidity retention effect of the human oral mucosa as well as skin. In addition, Tian Cha polyphenol component liquid showed a halitosis deodorization effect. The results were suggested that the development of the plants component combination oral care products is possible.

Rheological properties of commercial soft denture liners and denture adhesives and influence of chemical composition, such as the kind and content of monomers and cross-linking agents, on setting characteristic, water absorption, solubility and dynamic viscoelastic properties were evaluated. Furthermore, experiments in cytotoxicity and compatibility with denture cleansers were conducted. Theexperiments in influence of moisturizers and photocatalytic titanium dioxide on the physical properties were also being conducted. The results of the present research are considered to contribute thedevelopment of new type of soft denture liner.

    The purpose of this research is to develop tissue conditioner with moisture effect kir dry mouth. In 2006, we conducted the research concerning a non-alcohol tissue conditioner to improve the durability. This study was evaluated by means of setting characteristics using the displacement rheometer and dynamic viscoelastic properties using the non-resonance forced vibration method. This tissue conditioner is applied for longer period than the previous one because this material does not contain the ethyl alcohol in the liquids. A part of the results has been published in Journal of Dentistry. We also established the evaluation method of viscosity of oral moisture gel and denture adhesives having lower viscosity. This measurement has been conducted by means of a Sine-wave Vibro Viscometer. In 2007, the water absorption, solubility and compatibility with dental stones of tissue conditioners were evaluated. A part of the results is planned to be publishes in Dental Materials Journal. The relationship between composition and mechanical properties of the heat-polymerized and auto-polymerized acrylic denture liners has been evaluated. These results have been presented in the congress and now the paper is being prepared. The viscosity is very important for the evaluation of these materials in addition to the physical properties after setting. The viscosity of commercial oral moisture gel and cream type denture adhesives was determined. We plan to conduct clinical test using trial tissue conditioner. The evaluation method of masticatory function was established and this has been presented in Journal of Oral Rehabilitation. The suitable composition of trial tissue conditioner has been determined from the experimental results. We are conducting the experiment concerning the effect of moisture materials and evaluating the mechanical properties.

    Subjects in this study are from several facilities, and are elderly with mild, moderate, and severe dementia. These subjects have been examined for oral state, oral care, state of dementia, physical and mental state, diet type, and nutritional state (Body Mass index, and serum albumin, etc.) for several years. Japan is rapidly becoming an aged society, and problems of the elderly with dementia now attract attention. Elderly with dementia need help from other people for daily life. Therefore, not only the elderly person, but also the family and others are greatly affected. It can be expected that Dentistry is a large support for the situation in an aged society, to clarify the relation regarding physical, mental, and oral state for such elderly with dementia. Dementia becomes a more severe condition with age. In the case of the elderly with mild and moderate dementia, if the elderly lacked occlusal support by present molar teeth, they tended to wear dentures. Elderly with moderate and severe dementia, without occlusal support by present molar teeth, tended to wear no dentures. Wearing dentures did not relate to the physical and mental state (N-ADL and NM scale). However, it was clear that caregivers thought about oral care in consideration of the subject's overall status. This indicated that oral care is very important for the overall care of elderly with dementia. On the other hand, in the case of elderly with moderate and severe dementia, the rate of wearing dentures was lower. Nutritional status was a concern, but it became clear that not wearing dentures did not have a large influence on nutritional status if diet type was addressed, and dietary care was performed adequately. To maintain good nutritional status of elderly with dementia, these results indicate that cooperation with the dentist and dental staff is necessary.

    Many elderly patients complaint of dry mouth and discomfort. It has been reported that 56.1% of the people above 65 years old aware of dry mouth. Thus, it is necessary to dissolve this problem as soon as possible. Clinically satisfied results are not obtained in the most of fabrication of dentures for the patients having dry mouth even if hard denture base resin and soft denture liner are applied, because of insufficient retention and stability, and/or masticatory pain. The purpose of this study was to develop a moisturized soft denture liner suitable for thee patients having dry mouth and severe absorbed residual ridge. In 2004, the dynamic viscoelastic properties and bond strength to denture base resins of commercial denture adhesives and saliva replacement gels were determined. In the case of temporary soft lining materials, influence of molecular weight of polymer powders, plasticizer type, ethyl alcohol content and powder/liquid ratio on gelation characteristics (Journal of Dental Research, 2005). In 2005, influence of above mentioned composition and structure on dynamic viscoelastic properties of temporary soft lining materials was evaluated. For the autopolymerized acrylic soft denture liners, the additional experiment concerning relationship between viscoelastic properties and type of monomer was conducted. The paper is being prepared now. On the other hand, relationship between masticatory function and viscoelastic properties of soft denture liners has been determined. It has been found that the application of a soft denture liner having viscoelastic properties to the complete denture leads to more marked improvement in masticatory function than that of a soft denture liner having elastic properties. On the basis of the above results, the composition and structure suitable for the moisturized soft denture liner for a patient having dry mouth were determined. At present, mechanical properties and functional effects of this material is evaluated.

  24. Development of visible light-polymerized, resilient denture liners with high durability

    Recently various soft denture liners were developed and used in the clinical situations. Mainly, acrylic and silicone type materials were available. From the standpoint of masticatory function, acrylic soft denture liners with viscoelastic properties are more advantageous than silicone with elastic properties. However, from the standpoint of durability, acrylic materials were not advantageous compare with silicone. Furthermore, phthalic esters are considered to be Environmental Hormones. From the viewpoint of dimensional stability, the procedure of relining of dynamic impression surface by visible-light polymerization is better than that of the laboratory-processed method. The purpose of this study was to develop the visible light-polymerized, resilient denture liners with high durability and high degree of stress relief using dibutyl sebacate. In 2003, the measuring method of dynamic viscoelasticity was established. Then, the relationship between viscoelasticity, and monomer type and plasticizer content, and influence of monomer type on setting characteristics were evaluated. Analysis of surface characteristics were also determined. In 2004, influence of each factor on gelation characteristics f temporary soft liners was evaluated. Then, influence of monomer type and plasticizer content on glass transition temperature and adhesive to denture base resins were determined. Frequency -dependent properties of visible light-polymerized resins were also evaluated. The results suggested that iso-butyl methacrylate monomer containing 50% plasticizer would be suitable for the liquid of acrylic resilient denture liners. We are now conducting the clinical experiment. The paper concerning study on the mechanical properties of the acrylic resilient denture liners is under consideration.

    Most of definite evidence has been carried in the Western research result in our country though it is long after dentistry medical treatment according to EBM is proposed. It can think that it will probably keep putting Western knowledge into our clinic caused by the internationalization from now on, too. However, fixed consideration is necessary for the therapeutic act which must be evaluated by the patient's recognition with thing prosthetic appliance and so on. When it does so, around Japan during the other countries or others culture, it is very important to verify what kind of influence of fixed therapeutic intervention is given to patient's QOL in this time. But, the evaluated from the patient's recognition is not done. It pays attention to the thing which has the person who has the typical condition of defect of the denture service, and typical prosthetic appliance, and this research is the point which clears the matter whether that oral QOL is different during the different culture how. First, the negative plate (English edition) of OHIP was translated into Japanese, and use validity in Japan was confirmed. The possibility to use as a questionnaire which measured QOL of the dentistry was suggested by that result by Japanese translation edition as well as the negative plate. That next did questionnaire investigation about the knowledge about the artificial tooth stabilizer, the artificial tooth cleaning agent, and so on ; the experience and the education, and the influence that dental care intervention exerts the result of these investigations on the oral QOL in the place, and difference between those countries were analyzed. The significant difference was recognized between the countries as that result. These results are being contributed to the English journal.
