    In recent years, as human activities have increasingly placed pressure on the marine environment on a global scale, concerns have grown over their concentrated impact on coastal ecosystems and fishery resources. Coastal areas form socio-ecological systems in which human activities and ecosystems interact with one another. Through the "Ecosystem-based management," it is essential to manage resources while understanding the complex interrelationships within ecosystems and the influence exerted by society. This approach integrates ecological, sociological, and policy-related disciplines, and aims to minimize the multifaceted impacts of human society on the marine environment through collaboration among diverse stakeholders - citizens, businesses, researchers, and government agencies - while promoting the conservation of marine ecosystems and the sustainable use of biological resources.

    The ocean has a heat capacity 1,000 times greater than that of the atmosphere and stores 50 times more carbon comparatively, thus, constituting a major sink of anthropogenically released greenhouse gases. Warming effects of human activities on the climate system are now undeniably shown to impact marine life and ecosystems, both directly via warming of the ocean and/or indirectly altering ocean circulation across spatiotemporal scales. Beyond the effect of warming on individual organisms, a changing climate signal has been argued from modeling studies to cause a ripple effect known as trophic level amplification, resulting in changes in the balance of biomass in different size classes. Larger fractional changes in biomass are expected of predator organisms at higher trophic levels, such as fish, due to shifts in the representative phytoplankton at the base of the food web. With a shift towards smaller phytoplankton, trophic amplification scenarios are expected to disrupt fisheries and carbon storage algorithms and negatively affect ecosystem services necessary for a sustainable society. Despite continued advances in monitoring and modeling of ecosystems projecting changes related to trophic coupling, suitable habitat and biogeochemical element cycling remains difficult due to inadequate information on marine ecosystems across spatiotemporal scales. WPI-Advanced Institute for Marine Ecosystem Change (WPI-AIMEC) operates based on five institutional Grand Challenges (GCs). These GCs aim to promote fusion science by integrating observational, analytical, and modeling tools to complement theoretical approaches and advance our understanding of the processes driving marine ecosystem change. By combining the research skills and knowledge of the host institutes Tohoku University and Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology (JAMSTEC) in partnership with University ofHawai'i, we seek transformative solutions to the grandest challenges of addressing marine ecosystem change through diverse perspectives encompassing marine physics, biology, ecology, biogeochemistry, and data science. Overall, the AIMEC Grand Challenges offer unprecedented opportunities for cross­disciplinary fusion science and scientific breakthroughs with the attainable goal of "Planetary Stewardship”—the responsible management and care of the natural systems to ensure a sustainable and healthy planet for future generations.

    Background Driven by the growing world population, aquaculture plays a key role in meeting the increasing demand for food. However, aquaculture facilities in Japan are widely installed in coastal waters where natural disasters, such as typhoons and tsunamis, might wash these facilities away, thereby interfering with maritime navigation safety. Therefore, it is imperative to efficiently monitor the state of aquaculture facilities daily, particularly after a disaster in real time. To this end, several new space-borne L-band synthetic aperture radars (SARs) continue to be launched now and in the future, whose utilizations are expected to increase nationally and internationally. An example is the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency, currently operating a SAR that can be operated day and night, and even under cloudy conditions, called ALOS-2 PALSAR-2. Methods Based on the above facts, this study evaluated the effect of the incidence angle of ALOS-2 PALSAR-2 HH single-polarization data, using 3 m spatial resolution, on aquaculture raft detection. As the study site, we selected Ago Bay, located on the Pacific coast of Mie Prefecture in central Japan since the Nankai Trough Megathrust Earthquake and tsunamis have been predicted to occur in the future around this area. Then, we analyzed the sigma zero (backscattering coefficient) of aquaculture rafts and their surrounding sea surfaces, including the relationships between satellite orbits and aquaculture raft directions. Results Investigations revealed that the optimum incidence angle for detecting aquaculture rafts in this study was 33.8°–45.1°. Differences in the sigma zero values existed between the ascending and descending orbits. However, the incidence angles differed on the orbits. Then, differences in the median sigma zero values across a range of incidence angles were evaluated under the descending orbit. In addition, when the directions of the aquaculture rafts were closely perpendicular to the satellite orbit, aquaculture rafts tended to show the highest values of sigma zero due to Bragg resonance scattering. Hence, this knowledge may allow for the rapid detection of aquaculture rafts during an emergency without going on-site.

    <p>Mapping seagrass and seaweed bed habitats is essential for the implementation of sustainable development in coastal waters. In this study, we attempted to create orthomosaic maps from drone images of seagrass/seaweed beds taken of the Takenoura area in Onagawa Bay, Miyagi Prefecture, Japan. We conducted 8 surveys in 2019 and 2020 and successfully constructed a total of five orthomosaic maps. On these maps, seagrass/seaweed beds were either clearly visible (3 surveys) or visible but not clear (2 surveys), based on visual inspection. We failed to construct acceptable maps of 3 surveys, and in one case, could not create even a fraction of a composite map. We found that, to be able to create successful maps, it was necessary to establish a wide enough survey area to include fixed ground features such as land or rock outcrops, and to have sufficient overlap between drone images. In this study, the overlap ratio was set at 70 % on both the front and the side. Our results also suggest that drone surveys be conducted: (1) during low tide so that the distance between the sea surface and the seagrass/seaweed beds (seafloor) is shorter, and (2) under conditions of low turbidity so that the seagrass/seaweed beds can be seen through the sea surface. Attaching a neutral density and circularly polarized luminescence filter was also considered effective to reduce sunlight reflection on the sea surface. Although drone surveys have been reported to be effective in shallow waters in which the seafloor is clearly visible, in our study, orthomosaic maps could be created even in deep waters in which underwater features could be seen. Finally, underwater surveys by divers were conducted for ground truthing. Habitats of both seagrasses (Zostera marina and Zostera caulescens) and seaweeds (Sargassum micracanthum and Sargassum siliquastrum) were confirmed.</p>
