It is common that bluff bodies form complex wake structures and act on themselves with significant influence on aerodynamic forces. A square cylinder was studied as a typical model that makes complex flowfields. A magnetic suspension and balance system (MSBS) was used to support the model with magnetic forces and eliminate the influence of mechanical supports on the flowfield of wind-tunnel testing. The aerodynamic forces and base pressure of the square cylinder models with fineness ratios (L/D) of 1.0, 1.2, 1.68, and 2.0 were measured using the MSBS. The employed Reynolds numbers were from [Formula: see text] to [Formula: see text]. The drag coefficients were independent of the Reynolds number Re and could be divided into two regions between [Formula: see text] and 1.68. The base pressure coefficient decreased monotonically from 1.0 to 1.68. The drag did not significantly change for [Formula: see text] and 1.2 with angles of attack from -2 to 2 deg. In contrast, it quadratically increased from [Formula: see text] and 2.0. The lift–curve slopes were negative from [Formula: see text] to 1.2 and positive from [Formula: see text] to 2.0, confirming the reversal. The moment–curve slopes were negative for all fineness ratios. Notably, these changed linearly from [Formula: see text] to 1.2 and nonlinearly from [Formula: see text] to 2.0. The visualization test using the surface-oil-flow method revealed that the square cylinders had a reattachment position near [Formula: see text] for [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text] for [Formula: see text]. This suggests that the reversal of the lift–curve slope was caused by reattachment.

This study proposes a framework that reduces the calculation cost of sound source localization with the Amiet model, using a data-driven sparse sampling method. This method accelerates the calculation of the steering vector used in conventional beamforming. An aeroacoustic wind tunnel test was conducted in a 2 × 2 m2 low-speed wind tunnel, and the proposed method was verified. During the test, a monopole laser sound source, which does not interfere with the flow, was used, and its acoustic signals were measured using a microphone array. Next, steering vectors were reconstructed by discovering dominant modes and optimized sampling points from the training data based on the Amiet model and the modified data-driven sparse sampling method. Finally, the sound-source positions when the steering vector of the proposed model was used were compared with the positions observed when the steering vector of which all the grid points were calculated was used. The error was less than 2 mm when 16 modes were used, and the calculation time was reduced to ∼1/33 of that of the previous Amiet model.

SUMMARY The ‘big’ seismic data not only acquired by seismometers but also acquired by vibrometers installed in buildings and infrastructure and accelerometers installed in smartphones will be certainly utilized for seismic research in the near future. Since it is impractical to utilize all the seismic big data in terms of the computational cost, methods which can select observation sites depending on the purpose are indispensable. We propose an observation site selection method for the accurate reconstruction of the seismic wavefield by process-driven approaches. The proposed method selects observation sites suitable for accurately estimating physical model parameters such as subsurface structures and source information to be input into a numerical simulation of the seismic wavefield. The seismic wavefield is reconstructed by the numerical simulation using the parameters estimated based on the observed signals at only observation sites selected by the proposed method. The observation site selection in the proposed method is based on the sensitivity of each observation site candidate to the physical model parameters; the matrix corresponding to the sensitivity is constructed by approximately calculating the derivatives based on the simulations, and then, observation sites are selected by evaluating the quantity of the sensitivity matrix based on the D-optimality criterion proposed in the optimal design of experiments. In this study, physical knowledge on the sensitivity to the parameters such as seismic velocity, layer thickness, and hypocentre location was obtained by investigating the characteristics of the sensitivity matrix. Furthermore, the effectiveness of the proposed method was shown by verifying the accuracy of seismic wavefield reconstruction using the observation sites selected by the proposed method.

SUMMARY Reconstruction of the distribution of ground motion due to an earthquake is one of the key technologies for the prediction of seismic damage to infrastructure. Particularly, the immediate reconstruction of the spatially continuous wavefield is valuable for decision-making of disaster response decisions in the initial phase. For a fast and accurate reconstruction, utilization of prior information is essential. In fluid mechanics, full-state recovery, which recovers the full state from sparse observation using a data-driven model reduced-order model, is actively used. In this study, the framework developed in the field of fluid mechanics is applied to seismic wavefield reconstruction. A seismic wavefield reconstruction framework based on compressed sensing using the data-driven reduced-order model (ROM) is proposed and its characteristics are investigated through numerical experiments. The data-driven ROM is generated from the data set of the wavefield using the singular value decomposition. The spatially continuous seismic wavefield is reconstructed from the sparse and discrete observation and the data-driven ROM. The observation sites used for reconstruction are effectively selected by the sensor optimization method for linear inverse problems based on a greedy algorithm. The proposed framework was applied to simulation data of theoretical waveform with the subsurface structure of the horizontally stratified three layers. The validity of the proposed method was confirmed by the reconstruction based on the noise-free observation. Since the ROM of the wavefield is used as prior information, the reconstruction error is reduced to an approximately lower error bound of the present framework, even though the number of sensors used for reconstruction is limited and randomly selected. In addition, the reconstruction error obtained by the proposed framework is much smaller than that obtained by the Gaussian process regression. For the numerical experiment with noise-contaminated observation, the reconstructed wavefield is degraded due to the observation noise, but the reconstruction error obtained by the present framework with all available observation sites is close to a lower error bound, even though the reconstructed wavefield using the Gaussian process regression is fully collapsed. Although the reconstruction error is larger than that obtained using all observation sites, the number of observation sites used for reconstruction can be reduced while minimizing the deterioration and scatter of the reconstructed data by combining it with the sensor optimization method. Hence, a better and more stable reconstruction of the wavefield than randomly selected observation sites can be realized, even if the reconstruction is carried out with a smaller number of observations with observation noise, by combining it with the sensor optimization method.

A reduced-order modelling for fluid analysis and flow control gathers a lot of attentions. With regard to reduced order modelling, proper orthogonal decomposition (POD) is one of the effective methods to decompose the high-dimension fluid data into several significant mode of flow fields. Previous studies show that the limited sensor placed at appropriate positions gives us the approximated full state information. In this study, the extension of the vector-measurement sensor selection of the greedy algorithm was conducted in addition to that of convex approximation. This applied to test and PIV data to reconstruct the full state based on the information given by the sparse vector-measurement sensors.

In this study, the authors conduced ten firings to investigate a hysteresis characteristics in Axial-Injection End-Burning hybrid rockets under throttling operation. Oxidizer mass flow rate and chamber pressure were throttled by two methods, actuating valves in a fluid circuit consisting of two oxidizer supply lines and a motor controlling. Chamber pressure and oxidizer mass flow rate were measured during each firing. The results show that two types of hysteresis characteristics were observed when throttling operation is repeated. One is a hysteresis with respect to increase and decrease of the oxidizer mass flow rate. Another is a hysteresis for the cycle. It is considered that the former hysteresis has the influence of a chamber pressure response time. In addition, the latter hysteresis is not necessarily observed even in the same chamber pressure region.

In this study, the authors conducted twice experiments to verify the throttling characteristics of axial-injection end-burning hybrid rockets. Oxidizer mass flow rate and chamber pressure were throttled by actuating valves in a fluid circuit consisting of two oxidizer supply lines. Chamber pressure and oxidizer mass flow rate were measured during each firing. The results show that oxidizer to fuel ratio remains constant for similar values of oxidizer mass flow rate. However, two weak points were identified in these throttling firing tests. First, a pressure transient was observed when oxidizer mass flow rate was increased (turn-up operation). The pressure transient consisted of two distinguishable first order lags, a fast lag followed by a slow lag, which are treated by separate curve fitting functions. The fast response is explained by a thermal lag in the solid fuel, whereas the slow response requires further inquiry. Second, the chamber pressure history exhibited hysteresis characteristics of oxidizer mass flow rate due to the increasing fuel regression rate. Therefore, in the throttling tests where oxidizer flow rate was turned-up and returned to the initial condition twice back-to-back, the chamber pressure history was higher in the second iteration than in the first.

This study is an investigation of the accuracy of reconstruction techniques for determining instantaneous fuel regression rate. Results of reconstruction techniques are compared with results obtained through the measurement of the pressure drop across the fuel in an Axial-Injection End-Burning hybrid rocket (EBHR). The results of numerous firing tests show that this method allows for the evaluation of the accuracy of the instantaneous fuel regression rates obtained by reconstruction techniques. The error bias of O/F values calculated by the reconstruction techniques were around ±10%, and were mainly caused by uncertainties in the measured values of oxidizer mass flowrate and the definition of firing duration. The instantaneous length of an EBHR-type fuel can be calculated from the measurement of the pressure drop across the fuel. However, the calculated fuel length history obtained by the pressure drop in a port does not coincide with that obtained by the reconstruction technique because of an underestimation in pressure drop.

This study is an investigation of preeminent fuel regression rate in Axial-injection End-burning hybrid rockets under high pressure conditions. The authors overcame a back firing problem at high pressure conditions by redesigning and optimizing the fuel port diameter. The fuel grain outer diameter was 38 mm and the port diameter was 0.4 mm. Firing tests were conducted using gaseous oxygen as oxidizer at chamber pressures range from 0.98 MPa to 1.44 MPa. The results of four static firing tests show that fuel regression rate increases as the chamber pressure increases, which is consistent with previous research results. Fuel regression rate reached approximately 12.6 mm/s at 1.44 MPa. The authors reformulated the relationship between fuel regression rate and chamber pressure based on the results of high chamber pressure region, and showed that the pressure exponent increased from 1.09 to 1.20.

A recently developed reconstruction technique titled nozzle-throat reconstruction technique is used to investigate graphite nozzle-throat-erosion in two scales of hybrid rocket motors, 30N-thrust class and 2000N-thrust class, using oxygen as the oxidizer and high density polyethylene as the fuel. Thirty seven static firing tests were conducted under varying experimental conditions to confirm the validity of the reconstruction technique results, investigate the conditions at the onset of erosion and to formulate an empirical predictive model of nozzle erosion rate. Results show that nozzle erosion increases the convective heat transfer coefficient to upwards of 2-4 times the value predicted by Bartz correlation. Furthermore, an empirical model is introduced that treats the combustion gas as a single oxidizing agent with heterogeneous rate constants that are distributions of equivalence ratio of the bulk fluid flow. This empirical model predicts the nozzle throat erosion histories in multiple tests to within ± 5%.

Copyright © 2016 by the International Astronautical Federation (IAF). All rights reserved. The axial-injection end-burning type hybrid rocket originally proposed twenty years ago by Nagata and Hashimoto et al. recently recaptured the attention of researchers for its virtues such as constant ξ (oxidizer to fuel mass ratio) during firing and throttling operations. Previous studies revealed that, for combustion in a single-port fuel grain, the end-face regression rate in the axial direction is proportional to pressure, with a pressure exponent of 0.95. Accordingly, these rockets were expected to display good throttling characteristics. Given that no ξ shift occurs, keeping the oxidizer mass flow rate within 1% of its initial design point ensures specific impulse will remain within 97% of its design point. There are several requirements for realizing this type of hybrid rocket: 1) high fuel filling rate for obtaining an optimal ξ 2) small port intervals for increasing port merging rate; 3) ports arrayed across the entire fuel section. Because common manufacturing methods were unable to produce a fuel that satisfied these requirements, no previous researchers have conducted experiments with this kind of hybrid rocket. Recent advances in high-accuracy 3D printing have enabled such fuels to be produced for the first time. The fuel grains used in this study were produced by a high-precision light polymerized 3D printer. Each grain consisted of an array of 0.3 mm diameter ports for a fuel filling rate of 98%. Last year, the authors reported the results of multiple firing tests of an axial-injection end-burning type hybrid rocket using 3D printed fuel grains and verified that solid fuel regression rate is linearly dependent on pressure. In this study, the authors conducted a unique set of experiments to verify the throttling characteristics of the axial-injection end-burning type hybrid rocket. Oxidizer mass flow rate and chamber pressure were throttled during firings by actuating valves in a fluid circuit consisting of four oxidizer supply lines. Chamber pressure and oxidizer mass flow rate were measured during each firing. These experimental data were analyzed by a reconstruction technique to obtain ξ history. The results show that ξ remains almost constant during firing, even during throttling operations. Therefore, this study verifies that the axial-injection end-burning type hybrid rocket has superb throttling characteristics. Additionally, the study supports findings in previous research that indicate the pressure exponent is close to unity.

The authors have previously proposed the concept of end burning type hybrid rockets which would use cylindrical fuel grains consisting of an array of many small ports running in the axial direction through which oxidizer gas would flow. Because of difficulty in manufacturing a fuel grain that satisfied requirements such as high volumetric filling rate (above 0.97) and micro-sized port intervals, the end burning hybrid rocket had yet to be achieved. The authors succeeded to verify the novel end burning type hybrid rocket for the first time owing recent progress in 3D printing technology. This paper reports throttling firing tests to verify the excellent throttling characteristic of end-burning type hybrid rockets, that is, virtually no O/F shift during throttling.

The purpose of this joint research is to establish a new concept of flow control theory for controlling flows with large-scale vortex structures and shock-wave oscillations by means of dynamic feedback. In collaboration with a research group at the Florida State University (FSU) in the United States, both parties brought their knowledge and technology to the research and development of three key technologies: construction of an unsteady flow database based on high-precision advanced measurements, understanding of fluid phenomena based on reduced-order models of flow fields, and driving fast-response actuators. By conducting demonstration experiments using FSU's large-scale experimental facilities for a separated flow on the afterbody model and supersonic impinging jet on the ground plate, we have established a research foundation to realize a dramatic improvement in flow control capability, which was considered impossible by conventional methodologies.

The purpose of this study was to clarify the aerodynamic mechanism of locomotion caused by unsteady flow forces on a moving wing surface and to establish the experimental methods necessary for this purpose. By combining a pressure-sensitive paint (PSP) consisting of dye molecules having oxygen quenching properties with a lifetime measurement method and three-dimensional deformation measurement (VDM) using data assimilation, we developed a technique to image unsteady pressure distribution on a deforming wing surface and demonstrated its effectiveness in the benchmark experiments on a rotating wing and a flapping wing. Using the newly-developed techniques, we investigated the relationship between the large-scale separation vortex and the hydrodynamic forces acting on the wing surface, and obtained many insights into the mechanism by which a moving wing surface generates lift and thrust, paving the way to solving design problems that could not be solved by theory alone.
