Abstract Phase transitions in solid solutions generally tend to be broadened and diffused, often accompanied by the emergence of disordered phases. In this study, we report a contrasting result in a novel high-entropy compound, ilmenite-type (Mg0.2Mn0.2Co0.2Ni0.2Zn0.2)VO3, which exhibits a sharp structural phase transition accompanied by V–V dimerization, as well as an antiferromagnetic transition. (Mg0.2Mn0.2Co0.2Ni0.2Zn0.2)VO3 was obtained through high-pressure synthesis at 8 GPa and 1373 K for 1 h. At room temperature, the compound exhibited a triclinic ilmenite-type structure associated with V–V dimerization. Synchrotron X-ray diffraction (SXRD) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) measurements revealed that this compound underwent a structural transition to a rhombohedral phase at 510 K, concomitant with the disappearance of the V–V dimer structure. Furthermore, an antiferromagnetic transition was observed at 80 K through magnetic susceptibility and heat capacity measurements. The emergence of sharp structural and magnetic phase transitions, despite the high-entropy composition, represents a particularly noteworthy finding of this study.

We have investigated the changes in the magnetic properties on YbCuS2 by Lu or Se substitutions from a microscopic perspective. In general, it is expected that nonmagnetic Lu substitution dilutes the magnetic Yb3+ concentration, and that Se substitution induces the negative pressure in YbCuS2. The 63/65Cu-nuclear quadrupole resonance (NQR) measurements on polycrystalline Yb0.9Lu0.1CuS2 and YbCu(S0.9Se0.1)2 revealed that the Se substitution leads to larger lattice expansion compared to the Lu substitution. The antiferromagnetic transition temperature TN decreased from 0.95 K in the unsubstituted system to 0.75 K in both substituted systems. Furthermore, the T-linear behavior of the 63Cu-NQR spin-lattice relaxation rate 1/T1, suggesting the presence of the gapless quasiparticle excitations, was observed even in the substituted systems, and the value of 1/T1T increases. These results under the chemical substitutions are opposite to those under pressure as previously reported, and are consistent with the expectation. Our systematic study indicates a clear relationship between the magnetic ordered states and the quasiparticle excitations in YbCuS2.

Frustrated magnetic systems with anisotropic exchange interactions have been recognized as key platforms for discovering exotic quantum states and quasiparticles. In this study, we report the pressure evolution of magnetic structures and quasiparticle excitations in the frustrated semiconductor YbCuS2, characterized by Yb3+ zigzag chains with competing exchange interactions. At ambient pressure, YbCuS2 exhibits a magnetic transition at TN ~ 0.95 K, forming an incommensurate helical magnetic order. Under hydrostatic pressure of 1.6 GPa, TN increases to 1.17 K, and the magnetic structure changes to a commensurate one, which can be regarded as an odd-parity magnetic multipole order. Remarkably, pressure suppresses the gapless quasiparticle excitations. These findings suggest that pressure alters the exchange interactions between the Yb ions, affecting both the magnetic ground state and the quasiparticle excitations. Our results highlight the pivotal role of anisotropic interactions in one-dimensionality to stabilize the complex quantum phases, offering insights into the interplay among frustration, dimensionality, multipoles and emergent quasiparticles.

We have investigated the ground state and the quasiparticle excitations of the frustrated semiconductor YbCuS₂, where Yb forms zigzag chains with competing interactions. Analysis of the ⁶³ᐟ⁶⁵Cu-NQR spectrum reveals the antiferromagnetic phase transition at T_N ~0.95 K and the incommensurate magnetic structure. The ordered moment is significantly smaller than that expected from the crystalline electric field ground state, indicating the influence of frustration. Notably, the nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate 1/T₁ is proportional to temperature below 0.5 K, suggesting the emergence of gapless charge-neutral quasiparticle excitations in the antiferromagnetic ordered state of YbCuS₂. In addition, such gapless excitations are modified by applying pressure and chemical substitutions. Our findings highlight the critical role of the frustration effect with the anisotropy in the emergence of exotic quantum phenomena in this system.

Abstract
We have performed 63Cu-nuclear quadrupole resonance (NQR) measurements using a lump sample of the Yb zigzag-chain compound YbCuS2 with a small surface area to investigate the sample dependence of low-temperature magnetic properties in YbCuS2 by comparing with the previous study with different powdered sample. The line width of NQR signals in the present lump sample is larger than that in the previous powdered sample. In addition, the transition temperature T N ∼ 0.92 K in the present lump sample is lower than that in the previous powdered sample (∼ 0.95 K). These results suggest that the quality of the present lump sample is worse than that of the previous powdered sample. However, the T-linear behavior of the nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate 1/T1 was observed below 0.5 K and the value of 1/T 1 T in both samples is almost the same even though the sample quality and sample geometry are different. This suggests that T-linear behavior in 1/T 1 arises from the impurity-robust bulk gapless excitation inherent in YbCuS2 rather than from sample issues such as the sample quality or geometry.

Journal of the Physical Society of Japanに投稿予定である。
