    We have been studying the chiral lanthanide NMR shift reagents (CLSR) which can be used for determination of the absolute configurations of organic compounds. We first reported that Eu(III)-pdta complex can be used for α-amino acids in 1987. However, as the other lanthanide shift reagents, this reagent caused serious line broadening especially when we used the reagents on a high-field apparatus. We solved this problem by use of Sm(III) as a central metal ion. This reagent, Sm-pdta, enables to detect the enantiomer signal separations not only of α-proton signals but also of the side-chain proton signals. The reagent affordded a consistent correlation between the absolute configuration and the relative positions of enantiomeric signals of both α-protons and side chain protons as shown in Scheme 1. The major drawback of this reagent is that the signals due to pdta ligand of this reagent often overlapped with proton signals of substrates. We improved the reagent by replacing the hydrogens of the methylene part of the acetate groups with deuteriums. This removal of the obstructive signals allowed a measurement for a dilute solution of substrate (〜1mM). Moreover, it also allowed the simultaneous determination of absolute configurations of 2〜10 α-amino acids in mixture. Absolute configuration of each amino acid in a mixture was correctly assigned on the basis of the relationship which was observed for single amino acids. We believe that this NMR method must be practical for determining absolute configurations of peptides from natural sources.

    Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) allows students to acquire the knowledge, skills, attitudes and values necessary to shape a sustainable future. The knowledge and attitudes are nurtured through deep understanding of environmental issues such as global warming, energy and resources problems and sustainability. We have developed various microscale chemistry (MC) experiments on these issues. We developed several programs consists of several MC experiments. Through these experiments students understand such concept as conversion of energy, hydrogen society, etc. We organized the 9th International Symposium on Microscale Chemistry in Sendai in August 2017. In the symposium, our recent research was introduced through workshops and papers. Participants were impressed by the wide and diversified applicability of MC from environmental issues, food chemistry, dyeing, to new materials and artistic crafts, as well as to ESD.

    We have developed various microscale chemistry(MC) experiments and a kit for these MC experiments.The kit contains 24 kinds of materials including an eight-well plate and a multifunctional lid. All these materials are accommodated in a plastic box; the size of the box is 28 cm x 20 cm x 3 cm. With this compact kit, enormous numbers of microscale experiments can be conducted. The kits have been used in several junior and senior high schools successfully. The kits were especially useful in schools which suffered from the 2011 Tohoku Earthquake and could not use the laboratory. By the use of our kits, chemistry experiments could have been carried out in ordinary classrooms without laboratory facilities. We have run many workshops for teachers as well as for students in many cities including Berlin. In September 2014, we organized the International Symposium on Environmentally Benign Chemistry Experiments in Tohoku University to disseminate our environmentally benign experiments.

    In Japan, microscale chemistry (MC)is not popular, though it has many merits. In this study, the popularization of microscale experiments has been studied. We have developed MC kits and used them in workshops and in classes. The MC kits have been found very useful. The outcomes have been presented in many international and domestic conferences, symposia and workshops.

    本年度の実施研究計画に基づいて、以下の2種類の巨大ランタニド錯体について学術論文に報告できる精度のX線結晶構造解析を再度行い、総括的に研究をまとめた。 1)キラルな1,2-プロピレンジアミン-N,N,N',N',-四酢酸(pdta)を配位子とするランタニド錯体M^+[Ln(pdta)]-について、中心金属(Ln=La,Pr,Sm,Eu,Gd,Dy)および対カチオン(M^+=Na^+,K^+,Cs^+)を変えて系統的に結晶構造解析を行った。Pdta錯体では、LaとDy以外の金属イオンに対してカルボキシル基を介した3核コアを形成し、さらにカチオンを介して上下に重なった6量体を単位とする構造が形成することが明らかとなった。6量体構造は、結晶中ではカチオンを介して2次元平面状に広がった環状の分子集合体を形成する。ラセミpdta配位子とM=Na^+イオンの結晶では18量体であるが、M^+K^+イオンでは36量体、さらにキラルpdta配位子とM=Na^+イオンの組み合わせた結晶では48量体の環形成のため中心にナノサイズの大きな空洞が形成されることは判明した。 2)キラルなビス(2-ピリジルメチル)-1,2-エタンジイルビスアラニン(bpba)を配位子とする[Ln(bpba)]X^-錯体については、結合半径の大きいLa^+イオン以外は結晶化が困難であった。ハロゲンイオンをCl^-からBr^-に換えた場合2種類の結晶が析出した。結晶系が異なるがいずれも18量体クラスターを形成することが明らかになった。 国内外の色々な学会で上記の結果について発表し、今後の研究の発展性について議論した。なお、すべての構造結果は、結晶データベースへの登録を終了し学術論文へ投稿中である。
