    Abstract Heterogeneous noble metal catalysts exhibit various functions. Although their redox functions have been extensively studied, we focused on their soft Lewis acid functions. Supported Au, Pt, and Pd catalysts electrophilically attack the π‐electrons of soft bases such as alkynes, alkenes, and aromatic compounds to perform addition and substitution reactions. Hydroamination, intramolecular cyclization of alkynyl carboxylic acids, isomerization of allylic esters, vinyl exchange reactions, Wacker oxidation, and oxidative homocoupling of aromatics are introduced based on a discussion of the active species and reaction mechanisms. Furthermore, the adsorption of sulfur compounds, which are soft bases, onto the supported AuNPs is discussed. The adsorption and removal of 1,3‐dimethyltrisulfane (DMTS), which is the compound responsible for the stale odor of “hine‐ka” in alcoholic beverages, particularly Japanese sake, is described.

    The oxidation of alcohols to aldehydes is a powerful reaction pathway for obtaining valuable fine chemicals used in pharmaceuticals and biologically active compounds. Although many oxidants can oxidize alcohols, only a few hydrogen peroxide oxidations can be employed to continuously synthesize aldehydes in high yields using a liquid-liquid two-phase flow reactor, despite the possibility of the application toward a safe and rapid multi-step synthesis. We herein report the continuous flow synthesis of (E)-cinnamaldehyde from (E)-cinnamyl alcohol in 95%-98% yields with 99% selectivity for over 5 days by the selective oxidation of hydrogen peroxide using a catalyst column in which Pt is dispersed in SiO2. The active species for the developed selective oxidation is found to be zero-valent Pt(0) from the X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy measurements of the Pt surface before and after the oxidation. Using Pt black diluted with SiO2 as a catalyst to retain the Pt(0) species with the optimal substrate and H2O2 introduction rate not only enhances the catalytic activity but also maintains the activity during the flow reaction. Optimizing the contact time of the substrate with Pt and H2O2 using a flow reactor is important to proceed with the selective oxidation to prevent the catalytic H2O2 decomposition.

    The present study investigates the decomposition of ammonia (NH3) over Ni and Ru catalysts using a kinetic model based on a reaction mechanism consisting of kinetically important elementary steps. Experimental results obtained over a wide range of reaction conditions were reproduced by the model. Recombinative N2 desorption was the rate-limiting step on the Ru catalyst; whereas, the overall rate of NH3 decomposition was controlled by the NH3 dehydrogenation step on the Ni catalyst.

    CO酸化触媒として注目を浴びている金チタニア触媒の活性点と反応メカニズムを、触媒表面の局所的な電子状態に着目して明らかにすることを目的とした研究である。金とチタニアの接合界面に着目して、Au(111)表面にTiOx微粒子を蒸着し触媒のモデルとしてTiOx/Au(111)を作成した。モデル表面の局所電子状態を、走査トンネル顕微鏡STM、走査トンネル分光STSを用いて観測した結果を本講演で報告する。

    A process simulator was developed for the synthesis of bio-propylene from bio-ethanol with a zeolite catalyst by determining the reaction mechanism and the reaction rate constants that simulate the experimental data. The reaction mechanism thus determined consisted of 28 reactions involving 16 chemical species. The values of the reaction rate constants (the frequency factors and the activated energies) were determined by use of a genetic algorithm to solve the non-linear optimization problem of minimizing the differences between the simulated values and the experimental data. As a result, the behavior of experimental data, especially for the major species such as propylene and ethylene, was well explained by the output of the simulator developed in this work. Therefore, the simulator should be useful for optimizing the design and the operation of reactor in this process.

    To synthesize polymer-grade propylene from bioethanol containing an organosulfur compound such as dimethylsulfide (DMS) or dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO), we examined the adsorptive desulfurization of propylene by employing commercial activated alumina. It was found that both DMS and DMSO were converted predominantly to hydrogen sulfide during the catalytic conversion of ethanol to propylene over HZSM-5 zeolite. The performance of the adsorbent was evaluated by measuring a packed-bed breakthrough curve for the adsorption of hydrogen sulfide in gaseous propylene. Because of the adsorptive desulfurization, the concentration of hydrogen sulfide in propylene could be reduced to less than 10 ppb.

    Ir/SiO2, Ir/WO3-SiO2 and Ba doped Ir/WO3-SiO2 powder catalysts have high activity for the selective reduction of NO with CO in the presence of O2 (CO-SCR). The present study investigated the activity of these three Ir/SiO2-based catalysts in monolithic form for industrial applications. The catalytic activity was evaluated during heating and cooling cycles between 200°C and 600°C. All monolithic catalysts showed low activity for NO reduction during the first heating cycle but high activity appeared from the next cycle. The active temperatures for the monolithic catalysts are different to those for the powder catalysts, probably because of the differences in heat and mass transfer. The activities for CO-SCR gradually decreased with the number of cycles. The activity and durability of the monolith catalysts were consistent with those of the powder catalysts. Ba doped Ir/WO3-SiO2 monolith catalyst was the best catalyst. XRD spectroscopy showed that catalyst deactivation was caused by oxidation of iridium metal, which is the active species, because the activities of the aged catalysts were recovered by hydrogen reduction. The presence of SO2 in the reaction gas increased the activity of Ir/SiO2 catalyst, but had little effect on the activities of Ir/WO3-SiO2 and Ba doped Ir/WO3-SiO2 catalysts.<br>

    Formate species synthesized on Cu(111) by the hydrogenation of CO2 at atmospheric pressure in a reactor was observed by UHV-STM. The ordered structure of the formate species changed in the order of p(2×4), c(2×8), (7×7), p(2×3), (5×5) and c(2×4) with increasing coverage, indicating that various ordered structures appeared corresponding to a small change in the formate coverage. The coverage of formate species in the c(2×4) structure corresponded to ΘHCOO= 0.25, which was in good agreement with a saturation coverage measured by XPS at the same reaction condition; thus, particles seen in the STM images indicate each formate species. Further, at a low formate coverage (ΘHCOO= 0.02), formate chains were observed.

    The steam dealkylation of various methylquinolines was investigated over several supported metal (Ni, Pd, and Rh) catalysts in the temperature range of 300-400°C. An alumina-supported palladium catalyst exhibited the highest selectivity for quinoline. Indole and methylindoles were also formed during the dealkylation of methylquinolines.

    The preparation of active carbon from vacuum residual oil (VRO) was investigated using alkaline solution as an activator. The prepared active carbon was tested for measurements of specific surface area and pore size distribution. The liquid-phase adsorption ability of the active carbon was estimated using methylene blue and iodine.<br>The active carbon activated by sodium hydroxide (twice the weight of NaOH to VRO) at 500°C had a high specific surface area (1, 400m2/g) and a large adsorption ability for iodine (1, 200mg/g) as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. From X-ray diffraction patterns (Fig. 4) and scanning electron microscopy measurements (Fig. 5), the formation of graphitizing carbon was inhibited by use of sodium hydroxide as an activator. Further, both the specific surface area and the adsorption ability of the active carbon activated by alkali significant increased with the rise of activation temperature as shown in Figs. 6, 7 and 8. The pore sizes of the active carbons obtained at high activation temperatures were mostly about 20Å. It was proved that the growth of pores about 20Å were greatly promoted by activation with alkali at high temperatures. The activation mechanism was also discussed.

    The effects of the pretreatment of WO3-Al2O3 and WO3-SiO2 catalysts with various gases and their physical properties on the disproportionation of propylene have been investigated with a flow type micro-reactor. The reaction was carried out in the temperature range from 300 to 600°C. Each catalyst was activated previously with dry nitrogen gas or dry hydrogen gas at 600°C, after preparing the catalysts by an impregnation method. The catalytic activity of WO3-Al2O3 pretreated with hydrogen was very high at the beginning of the reaction time, but the activity decreased rapidly with the process time. Further, when the catalyst was pretreated with nitrogen, no catalytic activity was revealed at low reaction temperatures (Figs. 1, 2, 3). On the other hand, the activity of WO3-SiO2 catalyst pretreated with nitrogen was very high and remained constant at above 500°C of the reaction temperature. No promotional effects of hydrogen reduction of the catalyst on the reaction was observed at low reaction temperatures (Figs. 4, 5). It was found from the TPR (Temperature programmed reduction) behavior of the catalyst that the SiO2 supported WO3 was completely reduced to tungsten metal with hydrogen at 650°C, whereas the Al2O3 supported WO3 was partially reduced to low valence state of tungsten under the same condition (Fig. 6). The results of X-ray diffraction pattern and also SEM indicated that large tungsten oxide crystallites were present over the silica support, although they were highly dispersed over the alumina support (Figs. 7, 8). From these results, it seems reasonable to assume that the WO3-Al2O3 catalyst has two kinds of active centers for propylene disproportion. One is the low valence state tungsten (WOx) produced by the hydrogen reduction of tungsten oxide and it shows high activity at low reaction temperature. The other is the lower valent tungsten such as produced by the adsorbed propylene at high reaction temperatures. On the other hand, the active centers of tungsten oxide supported on silica are produced by reduction with adsorbed propylene and they can be assumed to be identical with the active centers produced by the hydrogen reduction.

    The disproportionation of propylene over molybdenum oxide supported on alumina was investigated on the effects of adding ternary metal oxide to increase catalytic activities. The reaction was carried out by means of an usual continuous flow type micro reactor. The reaction products were analyzed by gas chromatography, while the catalysts were prepared by impregnation method. The catalytic activity of molybdenum alumina was found to increase by addition of a small amount of ternary metal oxide such as Co or Fe (Figs. 3 and 6). It was found from the results of TPR (Temperature programmed reduction) behavior and X-ray diffraction pattern of the catalyst that the reduction of MoO3 was promoted by the addition of a small amount of Co ions existing in the vicinity of Mo atoms, in the case of low content of Co (Co/Mo=1/8), but the formation of CoMoO4 (Fig. 5) resulted in a lowering of the catalytic activity, in the case of high content of Co (Co/Mo=1/4). In the case of Fe, the reduction of MoO3 was found to be accelerated by addition of a small amount of Fe ions at high temperature (Fig. 7), and, the catalyst obtained revealed high initial and constant activities, as shown in the pattern of changes in catalytic activity on the process time (Fig. 8).

    Levulinate esters, intermediate compounds produced by solvolysis of sugars, can be converted to γ-valerolactone (GVL) via a catalytic transfer hydrogenation and the subsequent intramolecular dealcoholization reactions. ZrO2 catalysts supported on mesoporous silicas exhibited superior catalytic activities and reusabilities compared with the conventional bulk ZrO2 catalyst. Based on several characterization techniques, activity-structure relationships and the associated reaction mechanism were investigated.

    The decomposition of ammonia (NH_3) over Ru catalysts was investigated by using a flow reactor, temperature programed desorption and in-situ FT-IR. Ru/MgO catalyst prepared by coprecipitation method exhibits high catalytic activity. The NH_3 decomposition activity over Ru/MgO reached equilibrium conversion at the reaction temperature of 500℃. We found that the catalytic activity did not depend on the Ru surface area, but strongly depended on the binding energy of Ru-N.

    Liquid phase oxidation of glycerol over Au-Pd nanoparticle catalysts prepared by ion exchange method in anion exchange resin was studied. Glyceric acid and tartoronic acid were main products in the oxidation. Also, nanoparticles with a diameter of about 2nm were found in the catalyst by transmission electron microscope observation.
