Abstract A polymorph of Cu2OSeO3 with the distorted kagome lattice is successfully obtained using the high‐pressure synthesis technique (Cu2OSeO3‐HP). The structural analysis using X‐ray and neutron powder diffraction suggests that the tetrahedral Cu2+ clusters [similar to those in Cu2OSeO3 ambient‐pressure phase (Cu2OSeO3‐AP)] exist in Cu2OSeO3‐HP but with three symmetry inequivalent sites. No structural change is observed between 1.5 K and the room temperature. The complex magnetic H‐T phase diagram is established based on the temperature‐ and field‐dependent magnetization data, indicating two distinct antiferromagnetic phases at low and intermediate temperatures, in addition to the higher‐temperature spin‐glass‐like phase. The low temperature phase is identified by neutron powder diffraction refinements as a canted noncollinear antiferromagnetic order with a weak ferromagnetic component along the b‐axis. Size of the refined ordered moment is ≈1.00(4) µB in Cu2OSeO3‐HP, indicating a large enhancement compared to that of Cu2OSeO3‐AP (≈0.61 µB). By applying a uniaxial stress, finite enhancement of weak ferromagnetic component in the noncollinear antiferromagnetic phase in Cu2OSeO3‐HP is observed, which is the clear evidence of the piezomagnetic effect. Interestingly, the sign of the induced magnetization changes on heating from the low‐temperature to the intermediate‐temperature phases, indicating a novel piezomagnetic switching effect in this compound.

Abstract
The rotation of polarization at 90-degree domain walls in tetragonal BaTiO3 was directly observed by the STEM-CBED method, which combines scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) and convergent-beam electron diffraction (CBED). The CBED patterns in the domain wall region exhibit continuous changes in intensity distribution within discs and specific features corresponding to the direction of the rotation of polarization. Simulations were performed using hypothetical superstructures created by continuously connecting Ti displacement with a 90-degree rotation and showed good qualitative agreement with the experimental patterns. The quantitative evaluation of the mirror symmetries existing in the tetragonal structure in bulk form revealed the width of the domain wall is approximately 9 nm. While distorted regions with slightly broken symmetry in CBED disks were found to extend further on both sides of the domain wall region in 6-7 nm. This finding can explain the discrepancy in the domain wall widths reported in previous studies.

A local structure analysis method based on convergent-beam electron diffraction (CBED) has been used for refining isotropic atomic displacement parameters and five low-order structure factors with sin θ/λ ≤ 0.28 Å−1 of potassium tantalate (KTaO3). Comparison between structure factors determined from CBED patterns taken at the zone-axis (ZA) and Bragg-excited conditions is made in order to discuss their precision and sensitivities. Bragg-excited CBED patterns showed higher precision in the refinement of structure factors than ZA patterns. Consistency between higher precision and sensitivity of the Bragg-excited CBED patterns has been found only for structure factors of the outer zeroth-order Laue-zone reflections with larger reciprocal-lattice vectors. Correlation coefficients among the refined structure factors in the refinement of Bragg-excited patterns are smaller than those of the ZA ones. Such smaller correlation coefficients lead to higher precision in the refinement of structure factors.

<title>Abstract</title> The accuracy of electron density distribution analysis using large-angle convergent-beam electron diffraction (LACBED) patterns is evaluated for different convergence angles. An orbital ordered state of FeCr2O4 is used as an example of the analysis. Ideal orbital-ordered and non-ordered states are simulated by using orbital scattering factors. LACBED patterns calculated for the orbital-ordered state were used as hypothetical experimental data sets. Electron density distribution of the Fe 3d orbitals has been successfully reconstructed with a higher accuracy from LACBED patterns with convergence angles larger than 15.2 mrad, which is 4 times as large as that for conventional convergent-beam electron diffraction patterns. Excitation of particular Bloch waves with the aid of LACBED patterns has a key role in the accurate analysis of electron density distributions.

<title>Abstract</title> Degradation of the crystalline quality of transmission electron microscopy specimens in silicon prepared with different conditions has been examined using convergent-beam electron diffraction (CBED). The specimens are prepared using focused ion beam (FIB) with different accelerating voltages, Ar-ion milling and crushing method. Symmetry breaking of CBED patterns was quantitatively evaluated by symmetry breaking index S, which has been previously reported. The degradation and inhomogeneity of the FIB specimen were suppressed by decreasing the accelerating voltages of the FIB fabrication in the final process.

<title>Abstract</title> Ferroaxial materials that exhibit spontaneous ordering of a rotational structural distortion with an axial vector symmetry have gained growing interest, motivated by recent extensive studies on ferroic materials. As in conventional ferroics (e.g., ferroelectrics and ferromagnetics), domain states will be present in the ferroaxial materials. However, the observation of ferroaxial domains is non-trivial due to the nature of the order parameter, which is invariant under both time-reversal and space-inversion operations. Here we propose that NiTiO3 is an order-disorder type ferroaxial material, and spatially resolve its ferroaxial domains by using linear electrogyration effect: optical rotation in proportion to an applied electric field. To detect small signals of electrogyration (order of 10−5 deg V−1), we adopt a recently developed difference image-sensing technique. Furthermore, the ferroaxial domains are confirmed on nano-scale spatial resolution with a combined use of scanning transmission electron microscopy and convergent-beam electron diffraction. Our success of the domain visualization will promote the study of ferroaxial materials as a new ferroic state of matter.

The magnetic susceptibility of the 1/1 approximants to icosahedral quasicrystals in a series of Cd85-xMgxTb15 (x = 5, 10, 15, 20) alloys was investigated in detail. The occurrence of antiferromagnetic to spin-glass-like transition was noticed by increasing Mg. Transmission electron microscopy analysis evidenced a correlation between the magnetic transition and suppression of the monoclinic superlattice ordering with respect to the orientation of the Cd4 tetrahedron at T > 100 K. The possible origins of this phenomenon were discussed in detail. The occurrence of the antiferromagnetic to spin-glass-like magnetic transition is associated with the combination of chemical disorder due to a randomized substitution of Cd with Mg and the orientational disorder of the Cd4 tetrahedra.

Nanometer-scale skyrmions are prospective candidates for information bits in low–power consumption devices owing to their topological nature and controllability with low current density. Studies on skyrmion dynamics in different classes of materials have exploited the topological Hall effect and current-driven fast motion of skyrmionic bubbles. However, the small current track motion of a single skyrmion and few-skyrmion aggregates remains elusive. Here, we report the tracking of creation and extinction and motion of 80-nm-size skyrmions upon directional one–current pulse excitations at low current density of the order of 109 A m−2 in designed devices with the notched hole. The Hall motion of a single skyrmion and the torque motions of few-skyrmion aggregates have been directly revealed. The results exemplify low–current density controls of skyrmions, which will pave the way for the application of skyrmions.

Dynamics of string-like objects is an important issue in a broad range of physical systems, including vortex lines in superconductors, viscoelastic polymers, and superstrings in elementary particle physics. In noncentrosymmetric magnets, string forms of magnetic skyrmions are present as topological spin objects, and their current-induced dynamics has recently attracted intense interest. We show in the chiral magnet MnSi that the current-induced deformation dynamics of skyrmion strings results in transport response associated with the real-space Berry phase. Prominent nonlinear Hall signals emerge above the threshold current only in the skyrmion phase. We clarify the mechanism for these nonlinear Hall signals by adopting spin density wave picture to describe the moving skyrmion lattice; deformation of skyrmion strings occurs in an asymmetric manner due to the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction, which leads to the nonreciprocal nonlinear Hall response originating from an emergent electromagnetic field. This finding reveals the dynamical nature of string-like objects and consequent transport outcomes in noncentrosymmetric systems.

Improvement of electron density distribution analysis by convergent-beam electron diffraction using a nano-electron probe was conducted. Diffraction patterns with large convergence angle have advantage for precise determination of electron density and the origin was discussed. Crystal zone axis incidence and the data obtained from slight beam tilting condition were used for structural refinement and the difference were investigated. The twin interface of CaTiO3 was analyzed as an interface-induced polarization structure. From the symmetry change of the convergent-beam electron diffraction pattern at each electron probe position, the breaking of centrosymmetric at the interface was found.

Electron incoherent channeling techniques based on the combined use of electron spectroscopy and electron channeling effect, have been applied to local structure analysis of dopant atom sites in BaTiO3 ferroelectrics. Off-centering of dopant Ca atoms at Ba sites was revealed from characteristic X-ray incoherent channeling patterns obtained from a single ferroelectric domain area for the first time.
