Abstract The mechanisms underlying the influence of the surface chemistry of inorganic materials on polymer structures and fracture behaviours near adhesive interfaces are not fully understood. This study demonstrates the first clear and direct evidence that molecular surface segregation and cross-linking of epoxy resin are driven by intermolecular forces at the inorganic surfaces alone, which can be linked directly to adhesive failure mechanisms. We prepare adhesive interfaces between epoxy resin and silicon substrates with varying surface chemistries (OH and H terminations) with a smoothness below 1 nm, which have different adhesive strengths by ~13 %. The epoxy resins within sub-nanometre distance from the surfaces with different chemistries exhibit distinct amine-to-epoxy ratios, cross-linked network structures, and adhesion energies. The OH- and H-terminated interfaces exhibit cohesive failure and interfacial delamination, respectively. The substrate surface chemistry impacts the cross-linked structures of the epoxy resins within several nanometres of the interfaces and the adsorption structures of molecules at the interfaces, which result in different fracture behaviours and adhesive strengths.

Turmeric (Curcuma longa) contains various compounds that potentially improve health. Bisacurone is a turmeric-derived compound but has been less studied compared to other compounds, such as curcumin. In this study, we aimed to evaluate the anti-inflammatory and lipid-lowering effects of bisacurone in high-fat diet (HFD)-fed mice. Mice were fed HFD to induce lipidemia and orally administered bisacurone daily for two weeks. Bisacurone reduced liver weight, serum cholesterol and triglyceride levels, and blood viscosity in mice. Splenocytes from bisacurone-treated mice produced lower levels of the pro-inflammatory cytokines IL-6 and TNF-α upon stimulation with a toll-like receptor (TLR) 4 ligand, lipopolysaccharide (LPS), and TLR1/2 ligand, Pam3CSK4, than those from untreated mice. Bisacurone also inhibited LPS-induced IL-6 and TNF-α production in the murine macrophage cell line, RAW264.7. Western blot analysis revealed that bisacurone inhibited the phosphorylation of IKKα/β and NF-κB p65 subunit, but not of the mitogen-activated protein kinases, p38 kinase and p42/44 kinases, and c-Jun N-terminal kinase in the cells. Collectively, these results suggest that bisacurone has the potential to reduce serum lipid levels and blood viscosity in mice with high-fat diet-induced lipidemia and modulate inflammation via inhibition of NF-κB-mediated pathways.

We investigated properties of lubricants confined between mica surfaces using resonance shear measurement (RSM) which can monitor the rheological and tribological properties of the lubricants as a function of the surface separation distance (D) as well as the normal load (L). The formulations of the five lubricants investigated were; oil A (mineral oil + viscosity modifier (VM) + Antiwear additive + Metallic detergent + Ashless dispersant + Anti-oxidant + Foam inhibitor), oil B (oil A + Molybdenum dithiocarbamate (MoDTC)), oil-C (oil A + Glycerol monooleate (GMO)), oil D (mineral oil + viscosity modifier (VM)), and oil E (mineral oil only). The oil E showed the friction coefficient (µ) of 0.45 at the normal load (L) below 2.0 mN. The oil D, which contained VM, showed significant decrease in the µ value to 0.19. In the case of oil A, B, C, the thickness of lubricant layers became significantly thicker than those of oil E and D, however, the no clear reduction in the µ value compared with oil D was observed. These results have demonstrated that the RSM can evaluate the contribution of the each component on the lubrication in order to optimize their properties and performance.

Quantitative and direct evaluation of the surface potential and charge density of electrodes, determined by the adsorption of ions and chemical reactions has been one of the central questions in electrochemistry. Surface forces measurements have been regarded as one of the promising tools for evaluating them based on an analysis of the electric double layer forces. We developed a new electrochemical surface forces apparatus (EC-SFA), which can perform the measurement on forces between symmetrical electrode surfaces, using the twin-path SFA. Using this apparatus, we evaluated the surface potential, charge density and ion adsorption on various electrodes (Au, Pt etc). The counterion distribution between the Stern layer and the diffused layer of the electric double layer was directly determined using ferrocene-modified Au electrode. The process from the proton adsorption to hydrogen evolution on Pt electrodes was also monitored by varying the applied potential for the first time.

In terms of resource saving and lowering environmental load, understanding and controlling of friction is becoming important. We have been studying the friction across nanometer thick liquid films at the molecular level using a resonance shear measurement (RSM), which we have developed. In this project, we developed RSM to apply solid lubrication. By designing of springs for force detection and the direct measurement of moving parts in the oscillating unit, the accuracy of parameter determination through physical model analysis was improved. We also proposed the procedure to evaluate the friction, sliding amplitude and sliding velocity using obtained parameters. The developed method was applied for friction between polymer hydrogel and silica sphere. It was revealed that the friction of the gel was mainly from the elasticity of the deformed interface, which was not evaluated in previous studies. This knowledge is quite important for designing the gel based lubrication materials.

We have revealed that alcohols and carboxylic acids, which have hydrogen-bonding groups, adsorbed on a silica surface in a nonpolar liquid, cyclohexane, forming ordered structures extending from ten to several tens of nanometers through hydrogen bonding between the surface silanol groups and alcohols (or carboxylic acids) as well as between alcohols (or carboxylic acids), which we call surface molecular macroclusters. We also found that the strong repulsive force appeared at the surface separation below ca. 5 nm when the molecular macrocluster layers were formed. This phenomenon realizes the high resistance to the normal load with low viscosity liquids, which are required for the lubricants. In this study, we aimed to regulate the structure and properties of molecular macrocluster layers based on the kind of adsorbing molecule, and to establish the new lubrication mechanism based on the structuring of liquid adsorbed at the solid-liquid interface.

We aim to elucidate the properties and functions such as molecular recognition of molecular films at the solid-liquid interfaces using the surface forces measurement as a main tool, and contribute to the soft interface science in a flame of biofunctional chemistry. One of the important issue for understanding biological functions is water. Therefore, we have studied the followings: (1) Interfacial water adsorbed on silica surfaces from cyclohexane at different water concentrations. We succeeded to distinguish water adsorbed by chemical interactions such as hydrogen-bonding from one by the phase separation, (2) Poly(ethylene glycol)brushes which are often used as biocompatible surfaces, (3)Specific interactions between proteins:The direct forces measurement provides useful information for nderstanding the interactions between biological molecules.

Rheological and tribological properties of nano-confined liquids are becoming important key factor for lowering the environmental load and energy loss. In this study, we advanced resonance shear method, which have been developed by us, and applied for investigating the properties of nano-confined liquids. The method to prepare the smooth metal surfaces such as gold, silver, was established. The rhelogogical and tribological properties of confined liquid crystal under the electric field were investigated. A procedure to investigate the stick-slip friction by the analysis of resonance curve was also established. We have also developed instruments for the study on adhesion of composite materials as well as the X-ray structural analysis of nano-confined liquids to understand the property of confined liquid based on their structures in confined space.

1.Development of Nano-Shear Resonance Apparatus We have designed a new shear resonance apparatus which enable us to study liquids between two opaque surfaces. This apparatus was build using the so-called "Twinpath surface force apparatus", which uses the "Twinpath" reflective interferometry for the distance measurement. 2.Ordering and Structuring of Confined Liquid Crystal (6CB) : Temperature Dependence We studied the structuring behavior of 6CB (4-cyano-4'hexyl biphenyl) confined between bare mica surfaces as well as between hydrophobized mica surfaces by the Langmuir-Bledgett monolayer by using shear resonance method. It is known that 6CB orients parallel to the bare mica surface (homogeneous orientation) and orients perpendicular to the hydrophobized mica surface (homeotropic orientation). Quite different behavior was observed for these different orientations. We built temperature regulation system into shear resonance apparatus and found that the viscosity of 6CB in isotropic state also increased drastically when they were confined between mica surfaces. We also analyzed the phase shift between input voltage to the piezo and the output voltage measured by capacitance probe, and obtained friction coefficient of 4 nm thick 6CB confined between mica surfaces. We are also investigated the friction and viscosity at various shear velocity as well as in the different orientation of 6CB. 3.Confined Effect in Nanometer Space : Solution and Dye Solution We investigated the 6CB (liquid crystal)-Sudan Black (dye) binary liquid system by using "FECO spectroscopy" which can measure the absorption of confined thin liquid film. It was found that Sudan Black condensed between mica surfaces when the distance decreased lower than 10 nm. The primary investigation of the effect of this condensation of Sudan Black on the frictional properties was attempted.
