    <p>A media grain with graded anisotropy is expected to have a shorter magnetization reversal time than a single layer grain due to the lower uniaxial anisotropy at one end of the grain. Here the magnetization reversal time of graded anisotropy grains is examined as a function of the anisotropy gradient and applied field and compared with single layer grains. Using graded anisotropy media the magnetization reversal time can be reduced to about 2/3 that of a single layer grain with the same damping constant. If the anisotropy gradient is increased the damping constant of the lower anisotropy part of the grain has a significant effect on the magnetization reversal time.</p>

    The effect of head field gradients and thermal gradients in heat assisted magnetic recording is investigated. When recording at a constant temperature, or in a constant external field, clear correlations between the recording performance and the head field gradient or thermal gradient can be found. Thermally assisted recording with a write head is much more complex and higher gradients do not necessarily translate into higher SNR.

    The magnetic properties of perpendicular magnetic recording media after ion irradiation modification were studied. CGC (Coupled Granular and Continuous) PMR media with a line-and-space pattern were dosed with Ar ions at a density of 1e+16 ions/cm2. A nano-imprint technique was used to fabricate precise minute nano-scale patterns. Examination of the Kerr loop of the line-and-space pattern after ion irradiation revealed that the coercivity and nucleation field were reduced, and the loop shape was similar to the sum of the loops between the magnetic film has ion irradiated and the resist stopped ions was observed by MOKE. As expected, the interactions were quite small between the ion-irradiated area, where magnetic modification was applied, and the non-ion-irradiated area. This indicates that the exchange coupling between the track, which preserves its magnetic properties, and the groove, which is magnetically modified, was significantly smaller than that expected in the continuous layer. To evaluate the read/write characterization, a spin-stand was used. There was no abnormal head flying. It was confirmed that there was no abnormal noise, such as Barkhausen noise, in the line-and-space pattern, except at the edge of the pattern. Analysis of the readback waveform signal in FFT showed that the patterned (ion-irradiated) area has several peaks that can be observed at lower frequency than the harmonics peaks, unlike the non-patterned (non-ion-irradiated) area.

    A micromagnetic analysis of single-pole-type (SPT) heads with side and trailing shields, which are indispensable for obtaining higher values of both track and linear densities, was carried out. First, quasi-static recording field distributions were obtained for various SPT shield structures and compared with those obtained from a static finite element method (FEM) analysis. The recording fields under the main pole were in good agreement, while some discrepancies were found below the shields and the return yoke. Next, time variations of the head field and magnetization processes were obtained for a high-frequency recording current and for various shield structures. Magnetization rotation in the main pole tip, which is the origin of the dynamic recording field, was strongly affected by the magnetization in the side and trailing shields.

    Discrete track media consisting of soft magnetic fillings were modelled. Using a recording head with practical dimensions, the groove permeability was varied from 1 to 100 to investigate the effect on the head field and head field gradient. As the groove permeability was increased, head fields in the groove were decreased, resulting in a significant increase in the field gradient. This phenomenon also occurred when side shields were attached to the recording head. The calculated head field distributions were used to record tracks on discrete track and granular media. Tracks recorded on media with soft magnetic fillings showed a significantly higher signal-to-noise ratio and narrower written track width than tracks recorded on a normal, granular medium.

    The assignment of bit-patterned media (BPM) with high recording density is to reduce interference of magnetostatic interaction and adjacent track eraser (ATE). Therefore, it is effective to have the large space between adjacent dots. In this report, write margin and magnetostatic interaction of staggered bit-patterned media (BPM) with array of half bit shifted dot in down track direction were investigated and compared with square bit patterned media with regular dot array. There is no distinguished difference in both magnetostatic interactions, however, distributions of magnetostatic interaction depend on dot arrays. Staggered BPM could reduce ATE and get the larger effective margin than square BPM.

    Four types of perpendicular magnetic recording media were compared using simulations to determine the most suitable candidate for use in future, high density storage products. Assuming a 75 nm track pitch, the minimum Ku values for no adjacent track erasure were determined. Roll-off curves provided an estimate of the maximum linear density. Exchange-coupled composite media appeared to be the most promising candidates, due to their high resolution and SNR and, if produced under well controlled conditions, could support areal densities of 600 Gb/in2.

    Recording simulations were used to determine the factors which influence the recorded track width in perpendicular media. Reducing the width of the main pole and adding side shields to the head are effective methods to write narrower tracks, whilst trailing shields can increase the SNR. Exchange coupling in the recording layer increases the track width, but erase bands are narrowed. However, the magnetisation of a pre-recorded track can influence the switching of grains at the edges of adjacent tracks if the exchange coupling strength is large.

    We discuss the effect of exchange coupling on written bit stability in perpendicular media in terms of resistance to thermal fluctuations. The optimum value of exchange coupling appears to coincide with a medium in which overall interactions, as measured by the δM curve, are close to zero. We calculate the upper limit of the areal density that can be supported by our typical medium and find values of between 80 and 400 Gb/in2, depending on the bit aspect ratio.

    Magnetization transitions, readback waveforms, and transition jitter are formulated for Voronoi modeling using error functions. Suitable coefficients for the error functions are provided by the parameters of the granular media, i.e., average grain diameter and grain size distribution. TEM images of real media are used to confirm the fitted results. Random grain positions and uniform SFD are assumed. Readback waveforms for isolated transitions are calculated by reciprocity. The pulse width, T_<50>, is formulated from the medium parameters and readback conditions. An error function with the same T_<50> and slope at the transition center is a good fit. An analytical expression for jitter noise is presented comprising grain size and track width parameters

    The spin-torque oscillator (STO) is the most important component in microwave-assisted magnetic recording (MAMR). Some requirements for the STO are: large amplitude and stable oscillation, small injected current and oscillation at a frequency that excites resonance in a recording medium. It is also necessary for the STO oscillation to closely follow the head coil current. In this paper, STOs were integrated into write heads and micromagnetic analyses carried out to obtain a write head structure with stable STO oscillation that could follow a high frequency head coil current. STO materials were also investigated for small injected currents.

    Simulations of recording in perpendicular media were carried out to determine the optimum parameters for supporting an areal density of 1 Tb/in^2. Single layer and exchange-coupled composite (ECC) media [1] were considered. Magnetic properties of the hard and soft phases were optimised for thermal stability and signal to noise ratio (SNR). The ECC media had 50% higher energy barriers than single layer media with the same SNR and could operate at a track pitch of 68 nm, compared with 80 nm for the single layer media. Areal densities of around 900 Gb/in^2 appear feasible using such media.

    Spin-torque oscillator (STO) and write head used for microwave-assisted magnetic recording (MAMR), one candidate for the future perpendicular magnetic recording, was investigated by using a computer simulation called micromagnetic simulation. We found that (1) once STO was inserted into write head main pole and trailing shield gap, it was hard to obtain a stable oscillation. Therefore, obtaining a stable STO oscillation is the key to realize the MAMR technology. To obtain a stable STO oscillation (2) small area STO had comparably large high-frequency field for its small area and oscillated stably, (3) STO tilted with regard to the medium surface oscillation stably, (4) non-parallel write head gap lead to a stable STO oscillation.

    For heat-assisted magnetic recording (HAMR), write head structure with dent for optical element, short yoke, and soft magnetic underlayer was proposed, which worked for high-frequency recording current. The maximum areal density of 8 terabit per square-inch was predicted with the write head. For microwave-assisted magnetic recording (MAMR), tilted, not perpendicular to the media plane, spin-torque oscillator (STO) inserted into the tilted write head gap was proposed. The head had a large recording field and stable STO oscillation.

    The representative researcher investigated and proposed recording write heads in perpendicular magnetic recording system in the next generation : two-dimensional magnetic recording with shingle writing, thermally-assisted magnetic recording, microwave-assisted magnetic recording and bit-patterned magnetic recording. The shielded planar heads are superior to conventional heads with regard to obtaining a faster response and a larger recording field, and even a smaller adjacent track erasure(ATE) field.
