    Abstract B1-type MX ceramics are composed of transition metals (M) and C, N, and/or O (X) occupying the M and X sites, respectively, and having M–X nearest neighbor (NN) bonds and M–M and X–X next nearest neighbor (NNN) bonds. Substitution of the elements and the formation of structural vacancies in B1-type ceramics change the numbers and strengths of the bonds, leading to novel properties. The change in elastic modulus of off-stoichiometric TiC in equilibrium with a Ti–Mo solid solution phase was experimentally investigated based on the rule of mixtures from the Voigt model. The experimentally obtained values agreed well with the results of density functional theory calculations. The bulk modulus (K) of TiC increased from 205.6 to 239.2 GPa as the fraction of Ti sites occupied by Mo increased from 0.11 to 0.33, whereas the Young’s modulus (E) and the shear modulus (G) remained nearly constant. On the other hand, all three elastic moduli decreased with increasing vacancy fraction at the C sites. These results suggest that the M–X bond strength should be the dominant factor in these moduli and the effect of M–M bond on K is greater than that of G and E.

    The solubility of B in Fe was determined by the diffusion-couple method using rf-GD-OES. The maximum solubility of B in γFe was about 60 ppm, while that in αFe was about 10 ppm in the Fe-B binary system. The B diffusivity was estimated from the rate of deboronizing that occurs during annealing in a wet hydrogen atmosphere. The diffusion coefficient of B in αFe at around 1000℃ was almost the same as that in γFe. These coefficients were several orders of magnitude higher than that of the self-diffusion of Fe, but the activation energy of B diffusion in Fe was close to that of the self-diffusion of Fe. It was suggested that the deboronizing reaction was kinetically controlled by the corresponding surface reaction, not by the B diffusivity in Fe.

    TEM in-situ straining measurements for Fe base alloys revealed that dislocations disappear at the grain boundary during deformation, which is not consistent with conventional of pile-up model. In the case of a steel containing carbon with fine microstructures, strain burst is retard due to a high resistance to dislocation motion. The fine structure causes low dislocation mobility and depresses a dislocation multiplication leading to a planar dislocation structure. The size of plastic zone underneath the indenter induced by ex-situ indentation is smaller for Fe-Si alloy that that of IF steel.

    By ab initio calculations we showed that the specific strength of the anelastic relaxation due to stress-induced reorientation of B atoms in solution is close to that of C atoms, and the activation energy is 0.67 eV. In ion-channelling experiments, we successfully observed channelling phenomena with coarse-grained iron samples, and verified that B can be quantitatively detected by (p, alpha) nuclear reaction. In diffusion experiments we have established the method for measuring the concentration profile of B penetrated to iron matrix by secondary ion mass spectrometry. However, we have not yet succeeded in site location nor obtained the diffusion coefficieint. In mechanical relaxation measurements we observed an anelastic relxation effect in a dilute Fe-B alloy, but whether this is the Snoek relaxation is not yet conclusive.

    The goal of this research is to obtain the knowledge of diffusivity and solubility of B in Fe for the establishment of an effective design of boron-doped low alloy steels. The concentration profiles by long range diffusion of boron in the diffusion couples were analyzed by rf-GDOES, by which the solubility was determined. The detection limit and the quantitative limit of boron in Fe by rf-GDOES were found to be 1.7 and 3.3 wt.ppm, respectively. The solubility of B in γ-Fe within the temperature range of 950-1050 C are found to be 20~40 wt.ppm. The diffusivity of B in γ-Fe was found to be so fast that its diffusion mechanism was indicated to be an interstitial diffusion.

    A novel method has been established for the determination of the solubility limits of metallic solid solusion phase. The proposed method includes the sputtering of C and/or B on to the well-polished specimen, followed by aquision of inward concentration profiles from the suface by glow discharge optical emission spectroscopy. A feasibility check was done on a well-established alloy system of the Ni-C binary, and the present method was confimed to be effective, since the obtained data agreed with the data in literature. Based on this knowledge, the solubility limit of C in Pt, which had been unknown so far, was determined in this study.

    This project has focused on designing an effective coating system against carbon based high temperature structural materials. Platinum group metals were chosen as candidates for a diffusion barrier that prevents carbon outward and oxygen inward diffusion. Their applicability was examined on the basis of carbon diffusion behavior. Pt is found to possess quite low carbon diffusivity, suggesting that Pt is promising for this type of application.
