Low-cost and low-alloy dual-phase (DP) steel with a tensile strength (TS) above 1000 MPa and high ductility is in great demand in the automobile industry. An approach to using a medium-carbon and fibrous DP structure for developing such new DP steel has been proposed. The microstructure and mechanical performance of fibrous DP steel obtained via partial reversion from martensite in Fe-C-Mn-Si low-alloy steel have been investigated. The TS of the as-quenched DP steel is above 1300 MPa, while the total elongation is less than 6%. The total elongation was increased to above 13%, with an acceptable loss in TS by performing additional tempering. The fibrous tempered-martensite/ferrite DP steel exhibits an excellent balance of strength and ductility, surpassing the current low-alloy DP steels with the same strength grade. Plate-like or quasi-spherical fine carbides were precipitated, and the relatively high-density dislocations were maintained due to the delay of lath recovery by the enrichment of Mn and C in martensite (austenite before quenching), contributing to the tempering softening resistance. In addition, nanotwins and a very small amount of retained austenite were present due to the martensite chemistry. High-density dislocations, fine carbide precipitation, and partially twinned structures strengthened the tempered martensite while maintaining relatively high ductility. Quantitative strengthening models and calculations were not included in the present work, which is an interesting topic and will be studied in the future.

Abstract Essential understanding of the pearlite growth kinetics is of great significance to predict the lamellar spacing and the resultant mechanical properties of pearlitic steels. In this study, a series of eutectoid steels with Mn addition up to 2 mass pct were isothermally transformed at various temperatures from 873 K to 973 K to clarify the pearlite growth kinetics and the underlying thermodynamics at its growth front. The microscopic observation indicates the acceleration in pearlite growth rate and refinement in lamellar spacing by decreasing the transformation temperature or the amount of Mn addition. After analyzing the solute distribution at pearlite growth front via three-dimensional atom probe, no macroscopic Mn partitioning across pearlite/austenite interface is detected, whereas Mn segregation is only observed at ferrite/austenite interface. Furthermore, in-situ neutron diffraction measurements performed at elevated temperatures reveal that the magnitude of elastic strain generated during pearlite transformation is very small. Based on the thermodynamic model, these experimental results are used to estimate the contribution of various factors to the total energy dissipation. Compared with the Mn-free alloy, the retardation effect of Mn addition on pearlite growth kinetics, which is partly due to the reduced driving force for pearlite growth, can be well explained by further considering the solute drag effect of Mn.

Abstract The solute clustering behaviors in Fe-1.0mass%Cr-0.3mass%N tempered martensite were comparatively studied by using three atom probe instruments, i.e. LEAP 4000 HR, 5000 XR, and 5000 XS. The microstructural features of nanoclusters were measured under the same conditions in voltage pulse mode, while statistical analysis including nearest neighbor distribution, radial distribution, frequency distribution, and cluster size distribution of Cr atoms were performed on the reconstructed datasets. The results revealed the superior capability of the LEAP 5000 XR to detect Cr nanoclusters in tempered martensite compared with the LEAP 4000 HR as a result of the improvement in detection efficiency and hit detection performance, whereas the high level of background in the mass-to-charge spectrum measured by the LEAP 5000 XS in voltage pulse mode limits its application in the detection of solute nanoclusters.

<title>Abstract</title>The current understanding of the microstructural features and mechanical properties of micro-alloyed low carbon steels strengthened by interphase precipitation of nano-sized alloy carbides are critically reviewed in this paper. The experimental results obtained via advanced quantitative characterization have revealed that interphase precipitation is promoted at the ferrite/austenite interface with a relatively lower degree of coherency caused by the deviation from the exact Kurdjumov–Sachs orientation relationship. Its dispersion becomes refined by enlarging the driving force for its precipitation, as adjusted by changing the transformation condition and chemical composition. The occurrence of interphase precipitation can significantly increase the strength of steels due to its large precipitation strengthening, and maintain good ductility as a result of enhanced work-hardening and dynamic recovery in different stages of tensile deformation. Finally, the application of interphase precipitation to ferrite/martensite dual-phase steels, together with our outlook on the challenging points in future research, are briefly explained.

    More details Close

Acicular ferrite (AFα) formed on oxide particles in steel weld metals has a positive effect on toughness at low temperature. Good lattice coherency between AFα and oxide is one of the proposed reasons for promotion of AFα formation. Lattice coherency is affected by crystal structure of oxide and crystal orientation relationship (OR) between oxide and AFα. In the present study, ORs among AFα, oxide and γFe are investigated in a low carbon steel weld metal. Cube-cube (C-C) OR is observed between γFe and the oxide. It is probable that the oxide liquefied at high temperature, and then crystalized having the C-C OR with the surrounding γFe during cooling in welding process. Near Kurdjumov-Sachs (K-S) and near Baker-Nutting (B-N) ORs are observed between γFe/AFα and oxide/AFα, respectively. The misorientation from the B-N OR is larger than that from the K-S OR just after nucleation of AFα. This implies that AFα forms satisfying a near K-S OR with γFe essentially. It is supposed that formation of both the C-C (γFe/oxide) and near K-S (AFα/γ) ORs results in apparent formation of the near B-N OR between oxide and AFα.

Focusing on the interaction between interstitial and substitutional elements, the clustering behaviors by competition and coupling of ordering and phase separation during tempering of carbon/nitrogen martensite and nitriding process were investigated experimentally and theoretically. With the addition of substitutional elements, the kinetics of low-temperature tempering of high-carbon martensite was found to be delayed, while the resistance to temper softening occurs due to the formation of alloy carbide/nitride and nano-cluster, as well as the suppression of dislocation recovery. Moreover, the clustering behavior inducing the formation of nitride can enhance surface hardening during nitriding process. Such a precipitation sequence was reproduced by the combination of first-principles thermodynamics and kinetic Monte Carlo calculation.

The effects of C and Mo additions on equilibrium grain boundary segregation behaviors of P in ferritic model alloys were investigated by using three-dimensional atom probe. In annealed Fe-P binary alloy, the segregation amount of P at high-angle grain boundary was found to be higher than that at low-carbon grain boundary. Based on this, the grain boundaries in C-added alloy and Mo-added alloy with similar boundary characters were selected for analysis. Even with small amount of addition, C is severely segregated at grain boundary, which reduces the segregation amount of P. On the other hand, the segregation amount of P is not changed by the segregation of Mo. The effects of these alloying elements can be understood by considering the thermodynamics in terms of their interactions with P.
