The probability of interstellar contact depends not only on the abundance of technological civilizations but also on their spatial connectivity. Treating civilizations as nodes linked whenever their separation is smaller than the distance a signal travels within a communicative lifetime, we determine the radial structure of Galactic civilization networks. An exponential stellar disc replaces the uniform disc of earlier work, and the fraction of stars hosting civilizations may vary with radius as a Galactic Habitable Zone (GHZ). The isolation, contact and network transitions are frontiers several kiloparsecs wide, not boundaries: the contact frontier is set entirely by the disc scale length, and the network frontier, broadened by gradient percolation, stays near 1.5 scale lengths. The two frontiers overlap over a band containing the Sun, where both transitions proceed at once. Within this factorized GHZ model, the radius of peak civilization density depends only logarithmically on the strength of supernova sterilization, and the wide range of published peak radii, from the Galactic centre to 12 kpc, is reproduced primarily by varying that one parameter. Under the present normalization, the location of the zone has only a modest effect on the local contact probability, whereas the modelled Galactic connectivity is minimized when the civilization-density peak lies near the solar Galactocentric radius, where current determinations place the peak.

  2. Application of Nonspherical Dust Models to Polarization of Zodiacal Light Observed with DIRBE/COBE International-journal Peer-reviewed

The composition, size, and shape of interplanetary dust (IPD) grains record their origin and are inferred from in situ counts and remote sensing of scattered sunlight and thermal emission. We previously reported near-infrared zodiacal light (ZL) polarization measured by the Diffuse Infrared Background Experiment (DIRBE) on board the Cosmic Background Explorer (COBE) at 1.25, 2.2, and 3.5 μ m, finding that absorptive micron-sized spheres reproduce it only partially and provide no plausible model for genuinely nonspherical silicate-carbonaceous mixtures. Here we combine light-scattering simulations of rough, irregular, and aggregate mixed-composition particles with the three-dimensional distribution of IPD cross-sectional area and compare predicted near-infrared ZL intensity and polarization with observations. Using an explicit χ 2 criterion, exactly one of 2520 combinations of shape, size, size-distribution slope, and composition passes, and only marginally: large solid irregular grains at the ecliptic pole, at the largest size in the database. At the pole, the irregular-grain model reduces χ 2 by a factor of 2.9 relative to the best Mie sphere (6.8 versus 19.4), which fails the χ 2  < 7.815 criterion. At the ecliptic plane no model passes; spheres outperform irregular grains ( χ 2  = 9.1 versus 20.8) but still fail, so no single population describes both regions. Compact aggregates, including low-porosity ones that most resemble the pole polarization, fail at both latitudes, and fluffy fractal aggregates fail by the widest margin. The acceptable combination uses the less absorptive composition, pointing to low absorptivity for the IPD sampled toward the ecliptic pole.

  3. Large-scale Morphology of the Optical F-corona from a Total Solar Eclipse Observation during the Artemis II Lunar Flyby International-journal Peer-reviewed

We investigated the structure of the optical F-corona, i.e., inner zodiacal light, using a publicly released wide-field image of a total solar eclipse that was obtained during the Artemis II crewed lunar flyby. In this image, the solar disk is fully occulted by the Moon, providing a rare view of diffuse circumsolar emission over a wide angular extent. Although the dataset is derived from a rendered red, green, and blue JPEG image without full photometric calibration, the gamma correction inherent to the image format was explicitly accounted for and the instrumental response was validated using field stars. The stellar calibration demonstrates a linear response within the unsaturated regime relevant to our measurements, enabling a reliable analysis of the relative morphology and brightness profiles of the F-corona. The observed F-corona exhibits a flattened, nearly elliptical morphology aligned with the ecliptic plane, with flattening indices of 0.52, 0.54, and 0.56 for the red, green, and blue channels, respectively. Radial intensity profiles along ecliptic longitude and latitude are well described by power laws in solar elongation, although the derived slopes are systematically steeper than previous observations. Comparison with the ZodiSURF zodiacal light model indicates that the observed radial profile of the F-corona along the ecliptic longitude is modestly reproduced by the model, supporting a radial dust number-density power-law index of α  ∼ 1.3, even in regions near the Sun. In a broader historical context, these results provide an empirical proof of concept that supports future solar coronal occultation observations from lunar orbit.

The High-z Gamma-ray Bursts for Unraveling the Dark Ages Mission (HiZ-GUNDAM) is dedicated to time-domain and multi-messenger astronomy, focusing on the observation of high-energy astronomical transient events, such as gamma-ray bursts (GRBs). The mission concept of HiZ-GUNDAM has been selected as a candidate for the competitively chosen medium-class mission of the Institute of Space and Astronautical Science, Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency. Conceptual studies of the satellite and its onboard instruments are currently ongoing, with a target launch in the 2030s. HiZ-GUNDAM is designed to deliver rapid alerts of high-redshift GRBs through the use of its wide-field X-ray monitor, the Exploration of Ancient GRBs with Lobster Eye (EAGLE), and a co-mounted 30-cm Multiband Optical and Near-infrared Simultaneous Telescope for Efficient Response (MONSTER), which performs immediate photometric follow-up observations. Upon detecting a transient object, the HiZ-GUNDAM satellite is going to autonomously adjust its attitude toward detected transient events, initiate follow-up observations using MONSTER, and transmit alert information, detailing the object’s position, apparent magnitude, and photometric redshift within 1 h of detection. The MONSTER instrument achieves simultaneous five-band observations in the 0.5 to 2.5 μm range using a beam splitter and a Kösters prism. The incoming light is divided into visible (0.5 to 0.9 μm) and near-infrared components by the beam splitter, with the visible light directed to a visible light detector. The near-infrared light is further divided into four bands (0.9 to 1.3 μm, 1.3 to 1.7 μm, 1.7 to 2.1 μm, and 2.1 to 2.5 μm) by the Kösters prism and detected by a near-infrared detector. To ensure optimal performance, the telescope, beam splitter, Kösters prism, and visible-light detector are cooled to temperatures below 200 K, whereas the near-infrared detector is further cooled to below 120 K through radiative cooling. In addition, all mirrors and structural components of the telescope are constructed from the same aluminum alloy to minimize alignment errors during the cooling process. We provide an overview of the current status of the conceptual study of MONSTER onboard the HiZ-GUNDAM satellite.

Zodiacal light (ZL) is sunlight scattered by interplanetary dust particles (IDPs) at optical wavelengths. The spatial distribution of IDPs in the Solar System may hold an important key to understanding the evolution of the Solar System and material transportation within it. The number density of IDPs can be expressed as $$n(r) \sim r^{-\alpha }$$, and the exponent $$\alpha \sim 1.3$$ was obtained by previous observations from interplanetary space by Helios 1/2 and Pioneer 10/11 in the 1970s and 1980s. However, no direct measurements of $$\alpha $$ based on ZL observations from interplanetary space outside Earth’s orbit have been performed since then. Here, we introduce initial results for the radial profile of the ZL at optical wavelengths observed over the range 0.76$$-$$1.06 au by ONC-T aboard the Hayabusa2# mission in 2021-2022. The ZL brightness we obtained is well reproduced by a model brightness, although there is a small excess of the observed ZL brightness over the model brightness at around 0.9 au. The radial power-law index we obtained is $$\alpha = 1.30 \pm 0.08$$, which is consistent with previous results based on ZL observations. The dominant source of uncertainty arises from the uncertainty in estimating the diffuse Galactic light (DGL).

The background light produced by emission from all sources over cosmic history is a powerful diagnostic of structure formation and evolution. At near-infrared wavelengths, this extragalactic background light (EBL) is comprised of emission from galaxies stretching all the way back to the first-light objects present during the Epoch of Reionization. The Cosmic Infrared Background Experiment 2 (CIBER-2) is a sounding-rocket experiment designed to measure both the absolute photometric brightness of the EBL over 0.5–2.0 μm and perform an intensity-mapping measurement of EBL spatial fluctuations in six broad bands over the same wavelength range. CIBER-2 comprises a 28.5 cm, 80 K telescope that images several square degrees to three separate cameras. Each camera is equipped with an HAWAII-2RG detector covered by an assembly that combines two broadband filters and a linear-variable filter, which perform the intensity mapping and absolute photometric measurements, respectively. CIBER-2 has flown three times: an engineering flight in 2021, a terminated launch in 2023, and a successful science flight in 2024. In this paper, we review the science case for the experiment; describe the factors motivating the instrument design; review the optical, mechanical, and electronic implementation of the instrument; present preflight laboratory characterization measurements; and finally assess the instrument’s performance in flight.

Diffuse Galactic light (DGL) is starlight scattered by interstellar dust. In visible wavelengths, earlier studies observed DGL toward regions of low optical depth in high Galactic latitude, and show marginal consistency with a theoretical model assuming single scattering by dust grains. However, a model for DGL in regions of high optical depth has not been established. In this study, we analyze wide-field imaging data toward a region of high optical depth near the Galactic center, which was obtained with the Optical Navigation Camera on board the Hayabusa2 spacecraft. The data are reduced by dark-current and stray-light subtraction, flat-field correction, and sensitivity calibration for the DGL measurement. In the image, we select dark low-intensity areas where background starlight is highly absorbed by interstellar dust, and extract the DGL component by masking pixels contaminated by stars. As a result, we find that the DGL intensity decreases toward high optical depth, and this trend is reversed from the previous measurements in optically thin regions. To explain the observed trend, we introduce DGL models inferred from a radiative transfer equation in a plane-parallel dusty slab. By assuming literature values for the albedo and scattering asymmetry factor of interstellar dust, the measured DGL intensity can be fitted by a model in which a dust slab without internal emitters is illuminated by backside stars.

We have conducted numerical simulations to reproduce the observed optical energy profile of the 15 October 2021 (UT) impact flash on Jupiter, which was the largest and the most well-observed flash event detected by ground-based movie observations. The observed long-duration (∼5.5 s) optical emission can be reproduced by an impact of an object with an exceptionally small angle of entry relative to the horizontal. The apparent lack of the impact debris feature despite the large impact object was possibly due to the shallower angle of entry (≤12○), which resulted in the lower ablation per unit volume at altitudes higher than 50 km, and the volume densities of the ablated materials were too low to allow the debris particulates to coagulate. The absence of temporal methane absorption change in the observed flash spectrum is consistent with the best-fit results. The model better fits the observed optical energy profile for weaker material (cometary and stony) cases than for metallic ones. Based on the simulation results, prospects for future observations of impact flashes are discussed.

Scattered sunlight from the interplanetary dust (IPD) cloud in our solar system presents a serious foreground challenge for spectrophotometric measurements of the extragalactic background light (EBL). In this work, we report on inferred measurements of the absolute intensity of the zodiacal light (ZL) using the novel technique of Fraunhofer line spectroscopy on the deepest 8542 Å line of the near-infrared Ca ii absorption triplet. The measurements are performed with the narrow band spectrometer (NBS) on board the Cosmic Infrared Background Experiment sounding rocket instrument. We use the NBS data to test the accuracy of two ZL models widely cited in the literature, the Kelsall and Wright models, which have been used in foreground removal analyses that produce high and low EBL results respectively. We find a mean reduced χ2 = 3.5 for the Kelsall model and χ2 = 2.0 for the Wright model. The best description of our data is provided by a simple modification to the Kelsall model, which includes a free ZL offset parameter. This adjusted model describes the data with a reduced χ2 = 1.5 and yields an inferred offset amplitude of 46 ± 19 nW m−2 sr−1 extrapolated to 12500 Å. These measurements elude to the potential existence of a dust cloud component in the inner solar system whose intensity does not strongly modulate with the Earth’s motion around the Sun.

We report the first measurement of the zodiacal light (ZL) polarization spectrum in the near-infrared between 0.8 and 1.8 μm. Using the low-resolution spectrometer on board the Cosmic Infrared Background Experiment, calibrated for absolute spectrophotometry and spectropolarimetry, we acquire long-slit polarization spectral images of the total diffuse sky brightness toward five fields. To extract the ZL spectrum, we subtract the contribution of other diffuse radiation, such as the diffuse galactic light, the integrated starlight, and the extragalactic background light. The measured ZL polarization spectrum shows little wavelength dependence in the near-infrared, and the degree of polarization clearly varies as a function of the ecliptic coordinates and solar elongation. Among the observed fields, the North Ecliptic Pole shows the maximum degree of polarization of ∼20%, which is consistent with an earlier observation from the Diffuse Infrared Background Experiment on board on the Cosmic Background Explorer. The measured degree of polarization and its solar elongation dependence are reproduced by an empirical scattering model in the visible band and also by a Mie scattering model for large absorptive particles, while a Rayleigh scattering model is ruled out. All of our results suggest that the interplanetary dust is dominated by large particles.

Cometary tails visually manifest the solar wind and became an initial hint for its discovery. While the solar wind is being directly monitored with satellites, its time series before the space age has been controversially reconstructed with multiple proxies. Recently, archival reports of cometary plasma tails have been subjected to consideration to indirectly measure the solar wind but brought conclusion that no plasma tails had been reported prior to 1769 probably due to their brightness. However, historical records have occasionally reported comets with two tails even before 1769. These cases have been tentatively associated with visual reports of cometary plasma and dust tails. Therefore, we examined three such cases (C/1577 V1, 1P/837, and 1P/760), and compared the descriptions in historical records with calculated direction of their plasma tails. Our comparisons show that the records and calculations agree in these cases and plasma tails were visually recorded corresponding to these three great comets. These cases certify the capability of plasma tail observations with the unaided eye even before 1769, qualitatively imply their extreme brightness, proximities with the Sun and the Earth, relative enhancements of UV radiations, and interaction of cometary neutral atmosphere with solar wind plasma and magnetic field, while the lack of their detailed length or kink hinders us from their quantitative measuring. Further investigations will likely lead to the re-discovery of even more visual evidence of cometary plasma tails and, hence, improve our understanding on past space climate.

We measure the spatial fluctuations of the Near-Infrared Extragalactic Background Light (NIREBL) from 2° to 20° in angular scale at the 1.6 and $2.2\, \mu \mathrm{m}$ using data obtained with Near-Infrared Spectrometer (NIRS) on board the Infrared Telescope in Space (IRTS). The brightness of the NIREBL is estimated by subtracting foreground components such as zodiacal light, diffuse Galactic light, and integrated star light from the observed sky. The foreground components are estimated using well-established models and archive data. The NIREBL fluctuations for the 1.6 and $2.2\, \mu \mathrm{m}$ connect well toward the sub-degree scale measurements from previous studies. Overall, the fluctuations show a wide bump with a center at around 1° and the power decreases toward larger angular scales with nearly a single power-law spectrum (i.e., ${F[\sqrt{l(l+1)C_l/2\pi }]} \sim \theta ^{-1}]$, indicating that the large-scale power is dominated by the random spatial distribution of the sources. After examining several known sources, contributors such as normal galaxies, high-redshift objects, intra-halo light, and far-IR cosmic background, we conclude that the excess fluctuation at around the 1° scale cannot be explained by any of them.

The near-Earth asteroid 162173 Ryugu, the target of Hayabusa2 sample return mission, is thought to be a primitive carbonaceous object. We report reflectance spectra of Ryugu’s surface acquired with the Near Infrared Spectrometer (NIRS3) on Hayabusa2, to provide direct measurements of the surface composition and geological context for the returned samples. A weak, narrow absorption feature centered at 2.72 μm was detected across the entire observed surface, indicating that hydroxyl (OH)-bearing minerals are ubiquitous there. The intensity of the OH feature and low albedo are similar to thermally- and/or shock-metamorphosed carbonaceous chondrite meteorites. There are few variations in the OH-band position, consistent with Ryugu being a compositionally homogeneous rubble-pile object, generated from impact fragments of an undifferentiated aqueously altered parent body.

  66. Verification of the anecdote about Edwin Hubble and the Nobel Prize

    Kohji Tsumura

Proceedings of the Sixth Symposium on History of Astronomy 2017/05/29

    More details Close

Edwin Powel Hubble is regarded as one of the most important astronomers of 20th century. In despite of his great contributions to the field of astronomy, he never received the Nobel Prize because astronomy was not considered as the field of the Nobel Prize in Physics at that era. There is an anecdote about the relation between Hubble and the Nobel Prize. According to this anecdote, the Nobel Committee decided to award the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1953 to Hubble as the first Nobel laureate as an astronomer (Christianson 1995). However, Hubble was died just before its announcement, and the Nobel prize is not awarded posthumously. Documents of the Nobel selection committee are open after 50 years, thus this anecdote can be verified. I confirmed that the Nobel selection committee endorsed Frederik Zernike as the Nobel laureate in Physics in 1953 on September 15th, 1953, which is 13 days before the Hubble's death in September 28th, 1953. I also confirmed that Hubble and Henry Norris Russell were nominated but they are not endorsed because the Committee concluded thei r astronomical works were not appropriate for the Nobel Prize in Physics.

We constructed a spectral catalog of diffuse radiation of the sky obtained by the InfraRed Camera (IRC) onboard AKARI. There is no precedent for spectral catalogs of the infrared diffuse radiation, thus this is the first infrared spectral catalog of the diffuse radiation in the world. This catalog contains the 278 low-resolution ( λ/Δλ- 20) near-infrared (1.8-5.3 μm) spectra of diffuse sky covering a wide range of galactic and ecliptic latitudes before the exhaustion of liquid-helium. Advanced reduction methods specialized for the slit spectroscopy of diffuse sky spectra have been developed for constructing the spectral catalog. Point sources brighter than mK (Vega)=19 were detected on the slit and masked for deriving the diffuse spectrum, and the brightness due to unresolved Galactic stars under this detection limit is negligible. Using this catalog, the diffuse radiation was successfully separated into three components of the zodiacal light (ZL), the diffuse Galactic light (DGL), and the extragalactic background light (EBL). In this paper, the specialized reduction methods for AKARI infrared diffuse radiation, and the method of component separation of the near-infrared diffuse spectrum are described.

    More details Close

The HiZ-GUNDAM is designed to provide alerts of high-redshift GRBs with an ultra-wide field X-ray monitor and a co-onboard 30-cm telescope for immediate photometric follow-up observations in the visible and near-infrared. The telescope is cooled down to 200 K by radiation cooling, and infrared detectors are additionally cooled down to 120 K by mechanical coolers. We introduce the current status of the development of the telescope including optical, thermal, and structural designs. In addition, the onboard detection algorithm of high-z GRBs by distinguishing them from nearby dusty galaxies in the orbit is also introduced.

We aim to explore the hidden star formation history of the Universe through observation of the Extragalactic Background Light (EBL) by the sounding-rocket experiment, CIBER-2 (Cosmic Infrared Background Experiment-2). CIBER-2, which has been developed through international collaboration funded by this research grant, was successfully launched on June 7, 2021. In addition to acquiring scientific data during the launch, we also succeeded in recovering the observation equipment of CIBER-2.

The Linear Variable Filter (LVF) designed for observation of atmospheric emission in Antarctica has been fabricated. The spectral transmission of the delivered LVF was good, and we expect to obtain the atmospheric spectrum in the K-dark band if the observation in Antarctica can be realized. Maintenance of the refrigerator for the infrared detector has been carried out, and astronomical observations have been continued in Okayama. We gave a poster presentation on this research plan at the international conference Polar2018, and we also visited the University of Nice in France to discuss the feasibility of the observation at the Dome C in Antarctica. However, we were not able to obtain a concrete plan for the realization of the observations with our equipments in Antarctica.

Main objective of this research is to directly see the origin of astronomical objects by observing the cosmic near-infrared background as the redshifted UV field generated by the first stars and primordial blackholes. Since this type of observation requires very high photometric accuracy, we conduct rocket-borne observations beyond the upper atmosphere to avoid the airglow contamination. In this research we have newly developed a telescope with highest ever sensitivity and carried out the rocket experiment with international collaborators under NASA's sounding rocket program. Our instrument have passed various pre-flight tests, including focus, sensitivity and vibration tests, and shipped to the base for launch, but the launch schedule was delayed due to affect of COVID-19.

In the present study, a unique method to observe trans-Neptunian objects (TNOs) with radii of 1-10 km (kilometre-sized) has been developed. Since these kilometre-sized TNOs are too faint to detect even with giant telescopes, monitoring of stars has been performed with two small observation systems to detect a small TNO by observing a moment when it hides a brighter background star (stellar occultation). From the two-year observations of the stellar occultations with newly-developed observation systems, a surface number density of kilometre-sized TNOs is obtained.

The purpose of this project is to analyze the data obtained by many kinds of telescopes to obtain the Cosmic Infrared Background (CIB). In this project, we analyzed the data obtained by the sounding rocket project CIBER, and we successfully obtained the spectrum of the CIB excess based on our preceding results of the Diffuse Galactic Light spectrum and stellar spectra by CIBER. In addition, we published the result by using the Hubble Space Telescope, NASA's astronomical satellite COBE/DIRBE, and the Japanese space infrared space telescope IRTS. In conclusion, we accomplish the goal of this project by obtaining the results of CIB spectra from many kinds of instruments.

Small astronomical and site-test instruments were deployed at the Dome Fuji station of National Institute of Polar Research to study the astronomical environment. The Dome Fuji station was found to be the best site for the studies of the exoplanet atmosphere and for wide field surveys of galaxies in the early universe with infrared telescopes and cameras. The technical and engineering problems to construct mid-size infrared telescope on snow in low temperature of -80 Celsius at inland Antarctica and a multi-object infrared spectrograph dedicated to the study of exoplanet atmosphere were studied. Then a 2.5m infrared telescope and a 3-color infrared camera were designed.

This research aims to detect the first-generation stars in the early universe one billion years after Big-Bang by measuring their lights as the cosmic infrared background radiation. For this purpose, we have carried out rocket experiments (CIBER) and analysis of the AKARI satellite data. By four times of flights of CIBER we first succeeded to measure the radiation spectrum and fluctuations of the cosmic background in the optical to near-infrared wavelength. Combining the CIBER data with the AKARI data, we obtained an important observational constraint on the early universe. We have developed flight instruments for the next rocket project CIBER-2, and proceeded future cosmic infrared background missions EXZIT/solar-power-sail and SPICA satellite.

This research aims to detect the first-generation stars in the universe in one billion years later after Big-bang by measuring their lights as the cosmic infrared background radiation. As the result of our rocket-borne observations with a designated infrared telescope, we first succeeded to measure spectrum of the cosmic infrared background radiation in the visible-infrared wavelength range. This result would give a great impact to the research in the early universe and the first-generation stars.
