    Abstract Bose–Einstein condensation (BEC) in quantum magnets, where bosonic spin excitations condense into ordered ground states, is a realization of BEC in a thermodynamic limit. Although previous magnetic BEC studies have focused on magnets with small spins of S ≤ 1, larger spin systems potentially possess richer physics because of the multiple excitations on a single site level. Here, we show the evolution of the magnetic phase diagram of S = 3/2 quantum magnet Ba2CoGe2O7 when the averaged interaction J is controlled by a dilution of magnetic sites. By partial substitution of Co with nonmagnetic Zn, the magnetic order dome transforms into a double dome structure, which can be explained by three kinds of magnetic BECs with distinct excitations. Furthermore, we show the importance of the randomness effects induced by the quenched disorder: we discuss the relevance of geometrical percolation and Bose/Mott glass physics near the BEC quantum critical point.

    The ilmenite-type CoVO3 undergoes an antiferromagnetic transition below 140 K, and the tetravalent vanadium ions form V–V dimers below 550 K. This paper presents the magnetic spin structure and the phase transition induced by a magnetic field in CoVO3. Neutron powder diffraction at 50 K reveals that the spins of Co2+ arrange in a zigzag order on the honeycomb lattice with no external magnetic field. This magnetic spin structure does not exhibit spontaneous magnetization, corroborating previous magnetic measurements. Magnetization measurements in a pulsed-magnetic field revealed a transition to a weak-ferromagnetic phase at 37 T (100 K) and above 50 T (4.2 K), with spontaneous magnetization approximating 0.3–0.5 μB/f.u. This phase transition could potentially be attributed to a transition to a canted antiferromagnetic phase, which is brought about by the reduction in structural symmetry due to magnetostriction.

    We systematically synthesized perovskite-type oxides Sr1−xCaxCoO3 containing unusually high valence Co4+ ions by a high pressure technique and investigated the effect of systematic lattice change on the magnetic and electronic properties. As the Ca content x exceeds about 0.6, the structure changes from cubic to orthorhombic, which is supported by the first-principles calculations of enthalpy. Upon the orthorhombic distortion, the ground state remains to be apparently ferromagnetic, with a slight drop of the Curie temperature. Importantly, the compounds with x larger than 0.8 show antiferromagnetic behavior, with positive Weiss temperatures and nonlinear magnetization curves at the lowest temperature, implying that the ground state is non-collinear antiferromagnetic or helimagnetic. Considering the incoherent metallic behavior and the suppression of the electronic specific heat at the high x region, the possible emergence of a helimagnetic state in Sr1−xCaxCoO3 is discussed in terms of the bandwidth narrowing and the double-exchange mechanism with the negative charge transfer energy, as well as the spin frustration, owing to the next-nearest neighbor interaction.

    The strength and sign of superexchange interactions are often predicted on the basis of the bond angles between magnetic ions, but complications may arise in situations with a nontrivial arrangement of the magnetic orbitals. We report on a novel molecular tetramer compound [Cu(H2O)dmbpy]2[V2O2F8] (dmbpy = 4,4'-dimethyl-2,2'-bipyridyl) that is composed of triangular "CuV2" fragments and displays a spin gap behavior. By combining first-principles calculations and electronic models, we reveal that superexchange Cu-V interactions carry drastically different coupling strengths along two Cu-F-V pathways with comparable bond angles in the triangular "CuV2" fragment. Counterintuitively, their strong disparity is found to originate from the restricted symmetry of the half-filled Cu dx2-y2 orbital stabilized by the crystal field, leading to one dominating antiferromagnetic Cu-V coupling in each fragment. We revisit the magnetic properties of the reported spin-gapped chain compound [enH2]Cu(H2O)2[V2O2F8] (enH2 = ethylene diammonium) containing similar triangular "CuV2" fragments, and the magnetic behavior of the molecular tetramer and the chain compounds is rationalized as that of weakly coupled spin dimers and spin trimers, respectively. This work demonstrates that fundamentally different magnetic couplings can be observed between magnetic ions with similar bond angles in a single spin motif, thus providing a strategy to introduce various exchange interactions combined with low dimensionality in heterometallic Cu(II)-V(IV) compounds.

    This study investigates the crystal structure, martensitic transformation behavior, magnetic properties, and magnetic-field-induced reverse martensitic transformation of Co64V15(Si21–xAlx) alloys. It was found that by increasing the Al composition, the microstructure changes from the martensite phase to the parent phase. The crystal structures of the martensite and parent phases were determined as D022 and L21, respectively. Thermoanalysis and thermomagnetization measurements were used to determine the martensitic transformation and Curie temperatures. Both the ferromagnetic state of the parent phase and that of the martensite phase were observed. With the increasing Al contents, the martensitic transformation temperatures decrease, whereas the Curie temperatures of both the martensite and parent phases increase. The spontaneous magnetization and its composition dependence were also determined. The magnetic-field-induced reverse martensitic transformation of a Co64V15Si7Al14 alloy under pulsed high magnetic fields was observed. Moreover, using the results of the DSC measurements and the pulsed high magnetization measurements, the temperature dependence of the transformation entropy change of the Co-V-Si-Al alloys was estimated.

    YbB12 is the only one Yb-based Kondo semiconductor. We have succeeded in electrical resistance measurements on single crystal of YbB12 at ultra high pressure of up to 195 GPa. The electronic state in YbB12 is discussed from analysis of an activation energy in electrical resistance measurements under high pressure.

    In Pt films, unusual strain dependence of elastic stiffness has been reported. In this study, we investigate elastic property of Pt films at high pressures to evaluate strain dependence of elastic stiffness. Pt film deposited on Si substrate is strained in a diamond anvil cell by applying hydrostatic pressure, and resonance frequency of longitudinal standing wave in Pt film is measured with picosecond ultrasound at up to 2.4 GPa. Strain dependence of elastic stiffness calculated using acoustoelasticity with elastic stiffness of bulk Pt predicted that the resonance frequency decreases with increasing pressure. However, significant strain dependence of the resonance frequency was not observed. This result indicates that in Pt films strain dependence of elastic stiffness is different from that of the corresponding bulk.

    The purpose of this study was to achieve a quantitative understanding of chirality driven phenomena by introducing a concept of "chirality strength" that quantifies the chirality (handedness) of the crystal structure. We have successfully synthesized single crystals of isostructural chiral materials whose chirality strength can be tuned by a chemical substitution. We have found that the occurrence frequency of mono- or multi-chiral domains in these materials are clearly correlated with the chirality strength. We have also revealed that the temperature dependence of the chirality strength and an optical rotatory strength is correlated near a so-called gyrotropic structural transition, in which the chirality strength can be regarded as an order parameter. Moreover, we have demonstrated that the chiral materials discovered in this study are highly interesting systems in terms of their magnetoelectric properties, and obtained various results that exceed expectations.

  6. Development of quantum oscillation measurements using plastic pressure cells under pressure and in pulsed magnetic fields

    In order to avoid heating due to eddy current in pulsed magnetic fields, we have developed pressure cells using insulating plastic materials having high tensile strength. The diamond anvil cell having a pressure chamber of 0.3 mm in diameter and 0.1 mm in height can apply pressure above 10 GPa. We have also developed the system rotating the pressure cell in cryostat. As an application of these systems, semimetallic black phosphorus under pressures have been studied. A clear pressure-induced semiconductor to semimetal transition around 1.5 GPa was confirmed through the direct observation of quantum oscillation. We also studied the metamagnetic behaviors in f-electron systems at ambient pressure.

    Solid oxygen is the only simple homonuclear diatomic molecule having a magnetic degree of freedom, and shows various magnetisms and crystal structures as a function of temperature and pressure. Although there are several suggestions of pressure-temperature phase diagram through mainly optical experiments, the diagram is still controversial. In this research project, we have tried to determine the phase boundary of solid oxygen thermodynamically. We have established the diagram of solid oxygen up to 5 GPa and below room temperature via thermodynamic quantities, such as specific heat and magnetic susceptibility under pressures, developed in this project, and discovered a possible new solid phase.

    本研究ではダイヤモンドアンビルセル、ピストンシリンダー型の圧力発生装置を用いた高圧力下物理量測定技術の開発によりスクッテルダイト化合物などの強相関電子系物質における圧力誘起相転移の機構解明を目指す。今までに圧力下での電気抵抗、比熱、熱膨張測定技術の開発を行い、以下のことが明らかになった。 微小な試料に複数の電極を取り付けることで、電気抵抗と交流比熱を同時に測定することに成功し、金属絶縁体(MI)転移を示す充填スクッテルダイト化合物PrRu_4P_<12>の圧力下での電子状態の変化について研究を行った。電気抵抗測定により、11GPa以上で金属絶縁体転移が抑制され室温から低温まで金属的な振る舞いを示すこと、磁気抵抗、交流比熱測定により、加圧に伴い低温での結晶場基底状態が変化することが分かった。これらは提唱されている反強十六極子秩序の理論でよく説明でき、圧力下で十六極子モーメントの秩序化が抑えられ、MI転移が消失したと考えられる。 歪みゲージとピストン・シリンダー型圧力発生装置を用いて圧力下での熱膨張測定開発を行った。測定精度の比較のため熱膨張がよく調べられている弱強磁性体MnSiの高圧力下での格子定数の温度依存性を測定した。過去の結果に比べて相転移に伴う熱膨張係数、格子定数の変化が小さいものの、転移温度、自発磁歪の圧力依存性はよい一致を示した。また加圧に伴い熱膨張係数異常が、非常にシャープなピーク状の異常を示すようになり、2次相転移から1次相転移に移り変わっていることを示す結果を得た。
