We propose a standard search and bargaining model with divisible money, in which only the random matching market opens and the generalized Nash bargaining settles each trade. Assuming fixed production costs, we analytically characterize a tractable equilibrium, called a pay‐all equilibrium, and prove its existence. Each buyer pays all the money holding as a corner solution to the bargaining problem and each seller produces a positive amount of goods as an interior solution. The bargaining power parameter affects the distribution of the money holdings and possibly induces economic inefficiency. We propose a redistributional monetary transfer that adjusts the bargaining outcome and improves the allocation efficiency. Moreover, we analyze a temporary expansion of the money supply that increases social welfare through a redistribution.

Abstract In this paper, I use a simple SIR Macro model to examine Japan’s soft lockdown policies in 2021 under the COVID-19 crisis. As real-time research, this paper consists of two parts written during two different research periods. The first part, which was originally reported in February 2021, studies the Japan’s second soft lockdown policy (state of emergency declaration) from January to March 2021. After the model is calibrated using 2020 data, the results show that a long enough lockdown can avoid future lockdowns, improving both the infection and the economy. In addition, I propose the ICU targeting policy, which keeps the number of severe patients at a constant level, mimicking the monetary policy’s inflation targeting. The model’s prediction is evaluated from an ex-post perspective in the second part, written in July 2021. I find that the model broadly captures the realized consequences of the second soft lockdown and the subsequent paths. Furthermore, the simulation is projected to the end of the pandemic under a revised scenario, incorporating the proliferation of COVID-19 variants. Finally, I discuss the effectiveness of the inverse lockdown (economic stimulus) policy in the fall of 2021 under the dynamic infection externality.

Abstract In response to the COVID-19 crisis, governments worldwide have been formulating and implementing different strategies to mitigate its social and economic impacts. We study the household consumption responses to Japan’s COVID-19 unconditional cash transfer program. Owing to frequent delays in local governments’ administrative procedures, the timing of the payment to households varied unexpectedly. Using this natural experiment, we analyze households’ consumption responses to cash transfers using high-frequency data from personal finance management software that links detailed information on expenditure, income, and wealth. We construct three consumption measures: one captures the baseline marginal propensity to consume (MPC), and the other two are for the lower and the upper bound of MPC. Additionally, we explore heterogeneity in MPCs by household income, wealth, and population characteristics, as well as consumption categories. Our results show that households exhibit immediate and non-negligible positive responses in household expenditure. There is significant heterogeneity depending on various household characteristics, with liquidity constraint status being the most crucial factor, in line with the standard consumption theory. Additionally, this study provides policymakers with insights regarding targeted cash transfer programs, conditioning on labor income, and liquidity constraints.

<p>Large language models (LLMs) are rapidly accelerating scientific production, from literature synthesis to automated analysis. Yet this expansion risks creating a verification gap, in which the volume of scientific claims outpaces the community’s capacity to check their reproducibility. We argue that the same LLM capabilities driving scientific output can be redirected toward scalable verification. As a demonstration, we share insights and lessons from our attempt to reproduce the core results of popular classical papers across disciplines, which yielded not only successful cases but also failures due to underspecified methodological details. This means that automated replication does not adjudicate scientific truth, but it localizes discrepancies and documentation gaps, lowering the cost of computational reproducibility checks. We thereby propose embedding LLM-assisted replication across the research lifecycle, from pre-submission quality check, journal-integrated verification, post-publication audits, to forensic reconstruction of legacy studies. To prevent misuse and preserve trust, we call for transparent standards and community governance. If institutionalized responsibly, AI can serve not only to generate science, but to scale its self-correction.</p>

  2. LLM-Assisted Replication for Quantitative Social Science

The replication crisis, the failure of scientific claims to be validated by further research, is one of the most pressing issues for empirical research. This is partly an incentive problem: replication is costly and less well rewarded than original research. Large language models (LLMs) have accelerated scientific production by streamlining writing, coding, and reviewing, yet this acceleration risks outpacing verification. To address this, we present an LLM-based system that replicates statistical analyses from social science papers and flags potential problems. Quantitative social science is particularly well-suited to automation because it relies on standard statistical models, shared public datasets, and uniform reporting formats such as regression tables and summary statistics. We present a prototype that iterates LLM-based text interpretation, code generation, execution, and discrepancy analysis, demonstrating its capabilities by reproducing key results from a seminal sociology paper. We also outline application scenarios including pre-submission checks, peer-review support, and meta-scientific audits, positioning AI verification as assistive infrastructure that strengthens research integrity.

In this project, I have mainly studied the macroeconomic approach on family economics. My main topic is the long-term trend of the child care market in the United States. I first find a sharp increase in the child care price in the late 1990s. I show that a massive expansion of federal and state means-tested child care subsidies, which were intended to stimulate the market, instead crowded out child care supply. A simple calibrated equilibrium model captures these effects. I also extended it to a rich life-cycle model and incorporate other taxes and benefits. Given the COVID-19 recession hit worldwide, I also started a new project about household consumption behaviors. In particular, I study the marginal propensity of consumption (MPC) to Japan’s COVID-19 unconditional cash transfer program. I used a natural experiment about the timing of transfer caused by administrative procedures. Interestingly, the MPC is almost homogeneous over family size and family type.
