    Despite the increasing trend of using four-wheeled tractors (TR) and power-tillers (PT) to prepare the land, studies on agricultural mechanization are relatively scant in Sub-Saharan Africa. This study examines the determinants of machinery use by rice-growing households in Tanzania, using a household-level panel data set. We find that farmers who grow rice in areas with high wage rates for hired labor are more likely to use TR. Furthermore, we find that the existence of TR and PT rental markets in the village is positively associated with using them. Improving access to affordable machinery rental services would enhance machinery adoption.

    <p>Microcredit is considered a potential tool for poverty alleviation. This study examines whether microcredit can contribute to an increase in the household income of rural households. We use two-year panel data obtained from a household-level randomized controlled trial (RCT) of microcredit service implemented in Tanzania. Our empirical results show that the provision of microcredit did not have a positive impact on household income. However, when the household income from different sources is examined, we find that microcredit had a positive impact on income from crops other than rice. Our findings are useful in designing microcredit products targeting agricultural communities in developing countries.</p>

    <jats:title>Abstract</jats:title><jats:p>How can we achieve a rice Green Revolution in Sub-Saharan Africa? In this chapter, we evaluate the progress of the rice Green Revolution and discuss potential policy interventions to achieve it in Tanzania. For these purposes, we summarize four studies that have been conducted by the authors. Especially, we focus on the effectiveness of irrigation, agricultural training, and microcredit for technology adoption and productivity enhancement of rice cultivation. We found a high potential for the rice Green Revolution in Tanzania and that it can be achievable with proper policy interventions. We propose irrigation development and agricultural training as effective means to achieve the rice Green Revolution in Tanzania.</jats:p>

    Technology adoption is a necessary step to improve agricultural productivity. However, in Sub Saharan Africa, purchased inputs such as chemical fertilizer and modern varieties of rice, and improved agronomic practices diffuse slowly due to weak public extension systems. JICA and Ministry of Agriculture Training Institute (MATI) sought to establish a farmer-to-farmer training scheme in Tanzania. The purpose of this study was to investigate the impact of this training on the technology adoption and the productivity of small-scale rice farmers. In order to do so, we conducted a randomized control trial (RCT). We conducted a baseline survey before the training in 2017 and collected the detailed information on rice cultivation of 394 households in 8 villages. The training was held in 2017 and we collected end-line data in 2019. We analyzed the effectiveness of the training by using collected data.
