    Abstract The iron and steel industries generate large amounts of unavoidable CO2 emissions as well as considerable quantities of slags. More than one-half of the emitted CO2 is produced in blast furnaces during ironmaking, and thus it is meaningful to use blast furnace slags to capture CO2 while addressing the byproducts and flue gas of ironmaking. Mineral carbonation of slags is a promising route to achieve carbon neutrality and effective slag utilization. To exploit slag more effectively and capture CO2 in flue gas, an in-depth investigation into the carbonation of blast furnace slags generated with different cooling methods was conducted. The effects of the solid–liquid ratio and introduced CO2 concentration on carbonation were determined. The CO2 uptake capacity of air-cooled slag (0.04 g/g) was greater than that of water-quenched slag. The CO2 uptake capacities of the two slags were comparable with those of slags in previous works, indicating the potential of the two slags for CO2 sequestration and utilization even with low-energy input and this fact suggests that this process is feasible.

    Abstract Mineral carbonation (MC) using alkaline waste material has become an effective CO 2 mitigation method to reduce the dire effects of global warming. Process developments for carbon mitigation systems indicate MC may be promising; however, the utilization of carbonated products requires attention. Previously, CaCO 3 generated from MC has been suitable as additive in commercial precipitated calcium carbonate (PCC). Hence, the current review focuses on the potential to utilize calcium carbonate (CaCO 3 ) from MC by determining the characteristics suitable for enhancing the properties of paper (printing, writing, and paperboard), plastic (polypropylene (PP), polyvinyl chloride (PVC), cement, and concrete materials based on the desired properties of commercial PCC. It was found that replacing CaCO 3 of a purity > 99% and refractive index (i.e., 1.48 − 1.7) in wood fiber and pulp improves the opacity of paper materials to enhance their whiteness and brightness up to 99%, with particle sizes of < 2 μm required to improve paper strength. The brightness and strength of plastic materials are improved using PCC with > 99% purity and particle size 0.02 – 0.1 μm, respectively. For cement and concrete cases, PCC particles ranging between 0.1 – 7.45 μm are normally suitable for improving the strength and workability. Comprehensive characterization of CaCO 3 from MC is necessary, and products can be tailored to match certain properties of commercialized PCC based on its proven benefits. High-purity CaCO 3 from MC can secure economic leverage through CO 2 sequestration cost reduction while also promoting resource circulation for environmental benefits.

    本研究は、セメント産業を核とする脱炭素社会構築に向けて、循環型経済の概念を導入した塩基性廃棄物の炭酸塩鉱物化による炭素循環システムを開発することを目的とする。二酸化炭素(CO2)を鉱物固定させ、そのプロセスで得られた副生成物はセメント製造に資源循環し、さらに循環が不可能な資源については環境浄化材として新たな循環ループを形成させる。具体的には、南アフリカ共和国で入手可能な各種の塩基性廃棄物を用いて、直接あるいは間接的にCO2と反応させる、途上国においても機器の調達・稼動・メンテナンスが容易で低コストのCO2削減技術を開発する。このように、セメント産業特有のプロセスCO2排出の削減に向けて、同国の主要産業である鉱業の重要課題となる酸性坑廃水の処理技術を含めた炭素循環の開発も行いながら、数々の炭素循環ループを重ね合わせ、脱炭素モデルの社会実装に向けた検討を行う。
