    In white-collar workplaces, individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) traits may experience psychological strain and reduced productivity. This study examined structural relationships among ASD traits, social camouflaging, psychological distress, and work functioning impairment, with a focus on gender differences using a secondary analysis of data from an online survey of 543 Japanese white-collar workers (284 men, 259 women). Validated instruments were used to assess ASD traits, camouflaging, psychological distress, and work functioning impairment. Multi-group structural equation modeling by gender was applied using a NIOSH-inspired model. Men scored higher on the Imagination subscale of ASD traits, whereas women scored higher on Attention Switching and Assimilation. ASD traits were indirectly associated with work impairment through psychological distress, while the direct path between ASD traits and work impairment became negative when distress was controlled, indicating a statistical suppression pattern that was more pronounced among women. Assimilation was significantly associated with psychological distress in women but not in men, although the gender difference was at the trend level. The findings indicate a cross-sectional, context-dependent association between ASD traits and work functioning and highlight the importance of considering both gender and workplace context in non-clinical working populations.

    BACKGROUND: While nurses balancing work and childcare face significant stress, this experience potentially leads to personal growth. However, previous studies on work–life balance have often focused on negative aspects such as an excessive burden of housework and childcare on mothers and the consequent decline in their health, and knowledge about the positive aspects is limited. We aimed to clarify the actual state of personal growth resulting from balancing work and childcare and its correlates among Japanese female nurses raising preschool children. METHODS: A web-based, self-administered anonymous survey was conducted with 200 female nurses whose first child was of preschool age. Hierarchical multiple regression analysis and simple slope analysis were performed using the 25-item Japanese version of the Posttraumatic Growth Inventory Extended and basic attributes (age, marital status, educational background, etc.). RESULTS: Data analysis (199 valid responses, 99.50%) revealed that work engagement and social support from family and others influenced personal growth among female nurses caring for preschool children. Furthermore, nurses who perceived strong social support from family and had high work engagement experienced greater personal growth. CONCLUSIONS: High work engagement and strong family support play a synergistic role in promoting personal growth. These findings emphasize the importance of not only providing support but also fostering a positive work attitude to help nurses grow during the childcare period. To explore this mechanism in greater depth, it is necessary to examine causal relationships with longitudinal changes and related variables. TRIAL REGISTRATION: Not applicable.

    OBJECTIVES: To clarify the conceptual structure of "cultural competence (CC)" among Japanese public health nurses (PHNs), to enhance culturally appropriate support. METHODS: A modified grounded theory approach (M-GTA) was used. A total of 11 municipal PHNs participated in this study. Data were collected through semistructured interviews. Interviews were audiotaped and transcribed. A comparative analysis was performed using M-GTA. RESULT: Five categories were identified. Japanese PHNs supported foreign residents while (1) maintaining a sincere attitude with curiosity and humility toward others regarding CC; (2) deepening their realization of issues arising from awareness of one's own and other cultures; (3) developing their knowledge about clients' cultures and the surrounding environments; and (4) mastering the skills of building a relationship with clients while creating supportive systems surrounding them. As they gained more experience in supporting foreign residents, as indicated in the above categories, their cultural competence grew, allowing them to (5) gain experience while encountering individuals without holding stereotypes and prejudice. CONCLUSIONS: The concepts of CC that emerged are based on cultural humility and are cultivated through supportive activities. The concepts identified in this study can serve as educational guidelines for health nurses and other care providers in Japan.

    Introduction   In low and middle-income countries (LMICs), health care providers known as Community Health Workers (CHWs) are active in preventing and managing Type2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM). However, their specific roles and activities have not been academically reviewed. The purpose of this article is to obtain suggestions for effective appointment and utilization of CHWs by categorizing the approach of CHWs on Type2 diabetes prevention and management programs in resource-limited regions. Methods   Original articles published between 2018 to July 2023 on the database of PubMed and Web of Science were searched. Articles that include all the keywords; ‘diabetes’, ‘community health worker(s)’ and ‘each name of LMICs (total of 54 countries or region)’ in the title/abstract were extracted. Results   From the 71 articles extracted, 20 articles from 11 countries/regions were selected for analysis. CHWs’ approaches towards the prevention and management of T2DM were categorized into: recruitment, screening, referral, follow-up, and others. The most common form of approach that CHWs make was a ‘home visit’. Conclusions   CHWs contributed to improved access to T2DM prevention and management using their knowledge of the community and relationships of trust with residents. A diverse approach by CHWs was identified, and they played important roles in primary and secondary prevention. Their roles are essential for high-quality T2DM prevention and management in LMICs facing a shortage of health care workers.

    In this project, we took an ethnographic approach to obtain a deeper understanding of the culture of network building among nursing professionals in nuclear precautionary zones (PAZ) in Japan. Our objectives were to identify the facilitators and barriers so we can provide evidence-based steps to further promote network building among nursing professionals in different sectors. After selecting 5 target PAZ, we interviewed 25 medical and non-medical personnel, including 13 public health nurses (PHNs) which we eventually focused on. We identified two overlapping domains. PHNs have nursing perspectives and professional skills that are hidden and not utilized in their current role; they are expected to coexist with other co-workers under a specific workplace culture and organizational structure as civil servants. In conclusion, it is important for PHNs to embody their nursing potential and build networks among nursing professionals in different sectors for nuclear disaster preparedness.
