<title>Abstract</title> The Review summarizes much of particle physics and cosmology. Using data from previous editions, plus 3,324 new measurements from 878 papers, we list, evaluate, and average measured properties of gauge bosons and the recently discovered Higgs boson, leptons, quarks, mesons, and baryons. We summarize searches for hypothetical particles such as supersymmetric particles, heavy bosons, axions, dark photons, etc. Particle properties and search limits are listed in Summary Tables. We give numerous tables, figures, formulae, and reviews of topics such as Higgs Boson Physics, Supersymmetry, Grand Unified Theories, Neutrino Mixing, Dark Energy, Dark Matter, Cosmology, Particle Detectors, Colliders, Probability and Statistics. Among the 120 reviews are many that are new or heavily revised, including a new review on High Energy Soft QCD and Diffraction and one on the Determination of CKM Angles from B Hadrons. The Review is divided into two volumes. Volume 1 includes the Summary Tables and 98 review articles. Volume 2 consists of the Particle Listings and contains also 22 reviews that address specific aspects of the data presented in the Listings. The complete Review (both volumes) is published online on the website of the Particle Data Group (pdg.lbl.gov) and in a journal. Volume 1 is available in print as the PDG Book. A Particle Physics Booklet with the Summary Tables and essential tables, figures, and equations from selected review articles is available in print and as a web version optimized for use on phones as well as an Android app.

Our understanding of the fundamental forces in Nature has developed to such a stage that all but one (gravity) of the known interactions can be understood as those mediated by spin-one gauge bosons. On the other hand, generation of the mass of elementary particles requires the existence of yet unknown interactions, the simplest possibility being the Higgs sector of the Standard Model. One of the most important physics aims of LHC is to test if this idea is correct. Other new phenomena are expected to lie in the LHC energy region. Supersymmetry is one of the most attractive candidates among various theoretical ideas of new physics at the LHC.

Helicity amplitudes are useful for processes in high energy physics, especially when parity-violating interactions are involved. We have developed a formalism to evaluate helicity amplitudes of processes including particles with spin higher than one in terms of Wigner's d functions. We examine new physics processes at the LHC collider in models including several scenarios in the supersymmetric standard model. Limits on the scalar top quark mass is derived using ATLAS data from LHC in the natural SUSY scenario. We also study models with pseudo-goldstinos and find that future high-luminosity LHC will be able to detect production of neutralinos/charginos decaying to pseudo-goldstinos emitting W, Z, or Higgs bosons.

Phenomena of flavor mixing of quarks and leptons provide important clue on the physics beyond the Standard Model. This project contains various theoretical studies on candidates of the physics beyond the Standard Model such as supersymmetry and extra dimensions, as well as related cosmology. We have obtained many new insights on each of these and contributed to the development of the field. Suggestions to present and future flavor physics experiments are given.

The head member of this project, M. Yoshimura, has launched a new investigation of how to determine the nature (Majorana vs Dirac) and the absolute magnitude and all mixing angles of neutrino mass matrix by means of new experimental technique. This method uses unstable atomic states and detects a neutrino pair emission, when they are irradiated by a high-quality laser with some tuning condition. The ultimate goal is to verify and elucidate the idea of the grand design of leptogenesis, which is based on the Majorana nature of neutrino and the seesaw mechanism of mass generation. Moroi has discussed effects of gravitino on big-bang nucleosynthesis. The result shows important constraint on the reheat temperature after inflation, and imposes a new challenge both to leptogenesis and baryogenesis. Hisano studied, and greatly refined computation of, dark matter detection in cases of the neutralino dark matter. Tanabashi studied the structure of the electroweak symmetry breaking in TeV scale extra dimension models.

As a consequence of this research program, it became clearer that new physics such as supersymmetry could be investigated by increasing the luminosity of the B factory. Simulation studies were performed to investigate the experimental sensitivities to various theoretical predictions, and we found that the search for charged Higgs particle in B→Dτv decays with 5000fb^<-1> is equivalent to the direct search in LHC experiment with 100fb^<-1>. Also, the FCNC decays of B meson, B→K^*μμ, is found to be sensitive to the contribution of SUSY particles, if the forward-backward asymmetry is measured with 3000fb^<-1>. The research of the accelerator enabled us to identify the fundamental issues that have to be solved to design the storage ring to accumulate much higher beam current. Based on this result and the experience at the KEKB accelerator, it is concluded that a collider with the luminosity higher than 10^<35>. Also the research of the detector enabled us to identify the necessary R&D items to carry out an experiment at the higher luminosity beyond 10^<35>.

    1. Precise determination of the top quark mass may be made by measuring the cross section of the process e^+e^- → tt^^- near threshold. We find that theoretical error in the determination can be made small by using the <MS>^^^- mass instead of the pole mass as the parameter representing the top quark mass. 2. We examine the bottomonium spectrum using higher order perturbative QCD calculation and find that the theory reproduces the data quite well, in contrary to the belief that perturbation theory is not applicable. 3. We study the decay of the top squark in the mass region where the direct decay to the top quark is not kinematically allowed. We calculated the decay to a charm squark a neutralino via flavor-changing neutral current in the supergravity model by solving renormalization group equations. We show that this mode can be dominant when the parameter tan β is large. We further examine the case this mode competes with the charged current decay to a bottom squark and a chargino and propose a method to detect the top squark pair production events at hadron colliders 4. Definition of the mixing matrix is nontrivial at higher orders in perturbation theory. We examine the gauge dependence of the mixing matrix and explicitly calculated the correction in several examples. 5. It is known that the QCD correction for the decay of a Higgs boson to quarks and squarks is rather large. We find that a clever choice of the lowest-order parameter can reduce the size of the correction, leading to more reliable theoretical predictions.

    1. We study three-body decays of charginos in supersymmetry and examine the dependence of the decay rates on the mass of scalar quarks and leptons. We find that a heavy sfermion can influence the rate drastically if the chargino is gaugino-like, even if the two-body decay channel to W is open. Study of the final state leptons and jets will be useful to extract the sfermion mass from the data. 2. Supersymmetric relation between coupling constants receive corrections from soft-breaking sfermion masses and may be useful to obation information on very heavy sfermions. We study its effect in chargino pair production in eィイD1+ィエD1eィイD1-ィエD1 annihilation. 3. We find that the decay of third-generation sfermions to final states containing a gauge or Higgs boson can have a substantial branching fration. 4. Lepton number breaking top quark interaction can appear in R-parity breaking supersymmetric models. We calculate its effect in top pair production at the Tevatron and find that top polarization and forward-backward asymmetry are useful observables to improve the limit on the coupling. 5. We study the distribution of lepton pairs in the decay of the second lightest neutralino at the LHC, as a means to determine the mass difference. We find that the distribution is very sensitive to the model parameters.

1.We study three-body decays of charginos in supersymmetry and examine the dependence of the branching ratios on the mass of scalar quarks and leptons. We find that the ratio of electronic and tauonic branching ratio can have a large deviation from one if the chargino is gaugino-like. This measurement should be useful to obtain information on slepton masses and therefore a key to the mechanism of supersymmetry breaking. 2.In the gauge mediated scenario of supersymmetry breaking, superparticles eventually decay to a gravitino, which has a spin 3/2. We develop a formalism to calculate helicity amplitudes for processes containing spin 3/2 particles. Some decay processes with a gravitino in the initial or final state are calculated. 3.We develop a compute code which generates programs to calculate cross sections for superparticle production processes (with two or three body final states) in e^+e^- collisions. 4.We study the effect of final state interaction due to gluon exchange on the energy and angular distributions of final leptons in top production in e^+e^- collisions. The distributions change by ten percent due to this effect. We also calculate the second order correction to the QCD potential which is related to the top production process. We find that the result changes according to whether the renormalization group equation is solved in the momentum or the configuration space. This ambiguity gives a 6% error to the cross section. 5.We apply the N/D method developed for the strongly interacting Higgs sector to pipi scattering and find a result suggestive of the existence of the sigma meson.

    1) The origin of CP violation While observed CP violation in K decay is only 0.2%, the KM model predicts nearly 100% CP violating effects in B decays. To understand the origin of CP violation it is crucial to discover this large CP violation. To achieve this goal, large number of B mesons must be created and the decay modes must be studied. At present B factory is being constructed at KEK and at SLAC.Both laboratories are competing against each other with the top level technology and physics. As a member of the Japanese high energy community we hope to see KEK discover CP violation first. To achieve this goal, we have initiated a study group to support this activity at KEK. The origin of quark masses A) Within the framework of SUSY GUT,Georgi-Jarlskog mass matrix was studied. The result of this study was that G-J matrix does not adequately explain the values of the KM matrix and the quark mass spectrum. How to get phases in to the mass matrix at the GUT scale is an important topic of the future study. B) The NNI form General quark matrices have 36 parameters. It has been shown that when they are transformed to the NNI form, a general mass matrices can be written in terms of 12 parameters. Out of these, 6 can be fixed with 6 quark masses. We have succeeded in fixing 4 other parameters using the KM matrix.

1.We calculate =(alpha_s) QCD correction to pair production of colored scalar particles (like squarks) in e^+e^- annihilation and compared it with fermion pair production. We find that both total and three-jet rate have significant dependence on the spin of the particle. 2.We study the final state interaction in the reaction e^+e^-*W^+W^- in the presence of strong symmetry-breaking interactions. Two formulations of chiral Lagrangian and a model with a vector resonance are used. We find that the effect of a vector resonance mass up to 2,000-2,500 GeV may be detected at a linear collider of 500 GeV center-or-mass energy. 3.If the top quark mass is generated by an unknown strong interaction, we find that the effect of the interaction is visible in top pair production by photon-photon collisions at linear colliders. 4.The Bern-Kosower rule has been known only up to one-loop. We extend it to arbitrary number of loops in scalar quantum electrodynamics. 5.We construct a new set of equations for Green functions in scalar field theory. Un-like Schwinger-Dyson equations, the new equations form a closed set, which may be solvable with no approximation.

The prompt photon production process is observed in LEP experiments. We have examined the process e^+e^-*qqgamma including one-loop QCD correction. This research is done using different regularization method by Japanese group by French group. In LEP experiments, events with two leptons and two photons are observed, which are suspected to be a new phenomenon. By use of GRACE system, the system to generate Feynman diagrams and to generate matrix elements for a corresponding process,we have calculated the cross section for e^+e^-*ll^^-gammagamma in electro-weak theory, whether the events are conventional ones based on the higher order QED interaction. Though the experimental signal exceeds the above background expectations, the origin of these is still uncertain due to the experimental controversy. Using the GRACE system, we have done systematic computation of the processes with three- and four-particle final states in high energy e^+e^- experiments, e.g., LEPH, JLC and so forth. The estimation of the strong coupling constant is done by studying experimental data by the parton shower model NLLjet and by the analytic calculation including resummation. The formulation of QED parton shower is done, so that the decoration of higher order QED correction for an arbitrary elementary process becomes possible. The numerical method developed for one-loop amplitude is also extended to multi-loop case. A new system for the symbolic manipulation is developed It has the feature to contract the expressions which appear in the calculation in particle physics. Some processes including the production of the super-particles are studied and the possible signal expected in the future colliders is shown. To execute the phase space integration efficiently, a new method for the numerical integration is investigated.

Physics experiments at TRISTAN e^+e^- collider started in 1987.Operations at the beam energy of 25.0,26.0 and 27.5 Gev have been finished by the end of 1987 and experiments at 28.0 Gev are in progress. Under these circumstances, the present research project is organized to study theoretical aspects of TRISTAN physics.Emphasis is put on the study of the radiative corrections and the phenomenology of the supersymmetric theory. As for the radiative corrections, calculations have been done for the processes of lepton-pair productions,photon-pair productions,top-quark-pair productions and jet-pair productions.Corrections to the process of e^+e^- -><nu><nu><gamma>,which is useful for counting a neutrino flavor number, are also estimated. In relation to the supersymmetric theory, various possibilities of detecting evidences of the supersymmetry at TRISTAN are studied.Among them the light scalar top is investigated extensively. From this study,it is found that existing calculations of decay amplitudes contain several errors.Beside the scalar top problem, relation to pp colliders and new types of interactions predicted by the superstring theory are also investigated.
