Abstract In Southeast Alaska (SE-AK), rapid ground uplift of up to 3 cm/yr has been observed associated with post-Little Ice Age glacial isostatic adjustment (GIA). Geodetic techniques such as global navigation satellite system (GNSS) and absolute gravimetry have been applied to monitor GIA since the last 1990s. Rheological parameters for SE-AK were determined from dense GNSS array data in earlier studies. However, the absolute gravity rate of change observed in SE-AK was inconsistent with the ground uplift rate, mainly because few gravity measurements from 2006 to 2008 resulted in imprecise gravity variation rates. Therefore, we collected absolute gravity data at six gravity points in SE-AK every June in 2012, 2013, and 2015, and updated the gravity variation rate by reprocessing the absolute gravity data collected from 2006 to 2015. We found that the updated gravity variation rate at the six gravity points ranged from −2.05 to −4.40 $$\upmu$$Gal/yr, and its standard deviation was smaller than that reported in the earlier study by up to 88 %. We also estimated the rheological parameters under the assumption of the incompressible Earth to explain the updated gravity variation rate, and their optimal values were determined to be 55 km and $$1.2 \times 10^{19}$$ Pa s for lithospheric thickness and upper mantle viscosity, respectively. These optimal values are consistent with those independently obtained from GNSS observations, and this fact indicates that absolute gravimetry can be one of the most effective methods in determining sub-surface structural parameters associated with GIA accurately. Moreover, we utilized the gravity variation rates for estimating the ratio of gravity variation to vertical ground deformation at the six gravity points in SE-AK. The viscous ratio values were obtained as −0.168 and −0.171 $$\upmu$$Gal/mm from the observed data and the calculated result, respectively. These ratios are greater (in absolute) than those for other GIA regions (−0.15 to −0.16 $$\upmu$$Gal/mm in Antarctica and Fennoscandia), because glaciers in SE-AK have melted more recently than in other regions. SUMMARY The Japan forearc plays a crucial role in modulating the post-seismic deformation in response to the enormous stress perturbation induced by the 2011 Tohoku-oki earthquake. Dense geodetic observations across Japan have revealed coupled interactions between afterslip on the subducting plate interface and viscous deformation within the mantle wedge, and detailed numerical models can provide further profound insights into the forearc rheology. Recent studies have revealed the presence of a stagnant section in the forearc mantle of the Tohoku subduction zone, and here we investigate the associated along-arc variation of the stagnant part of the mantle wedge (cold nose) across Japan. We utilize a newly deployed geodetic network along a corridor in the Fukushima–Niigata region and compare the surface deformation pattern to that of the Miyagi–Yamagata corridor close to the main rupture area. We present a 3-D rheological model using laboratory-derived constitutive laws to simulate the geodetic observations including displacement fields and their time-series. Our results suggest along-arc heterogeneity in the forearc mantle rheology; specifically, we find a narrower cold nose in the Miyagi region and a wider one in the Fukushima forearc. The geodetic inferences on the forearc variation are consistent with along-arc spatial heterogeneity in the cut-off depth for shallow earthquakes as well as comparative measurements of the respective geothermal gradients between the Miyagi and Fukushima regions.

Abstract
An electrical resistivity model beneath Azumayama Volcano, NE Japan, is explored using magnetotelluric method to probe the magma/hydrothermal fluid distribution. Azumayama is one of the most concerning active volcanoes capable of producing a potential eruption triggered by the 2011 Tohoku-Oki Earthquake. The three-dimensional resistivity model reveals a conductive magma reservoir (< 3 Ωm) at depths of 3–15 km below sea level (bsl). The 67% and 90% confidence intervals of resistivity are 0.2–5 Ωm and 0.02–70 Ωm, respectively, for the magma reservoir. We assumed dacitic melt + rock at a shallow depth of 4 km bsl and andesitic melt + rock at a greater depth of 9 km bsl. The confidence interval of resistivity cannot be explained by using dacitic melt + rock condition at a depth of 4 km bsl. This suggests that very conductive hydrothermal fluids coexist with dacitic melt and rock in the shallow part of the magma reservoir. For the depth of 9 km bsl, the 67% confidence interval of resistivity is interpreted as water-saturated (8.0 weight %) andesitic melt–mafic rock complex with melt volume fractions greater than 4 volume %, while the shear wave velocity requires the fluid and/or melt volume fraction of 6–7 volume % at that depth. Considering the fluid and/or melt volume fraction of 6–7 volume %, the conductive hydrous phase is likewise required to explain the wide range of the 67% confidence interval of resistivity. The Mogi inflation source determined from geodetic data lies on the resistive side near the top boundary of the conductive magma reservoir at a depth of 2.7 or 3.7 km bsl. Assuming that the resistivity of the inflation source region is above the upper bound of the confidence interval of resistivity for the conductive magma reservoir and that the source region is composed of hydrothermal fluid + rock, the resistivity of the source region is explained by a hydrothermal fluid volume fraction below 5 volume %, which is the percolation threshold porosity in an effusive eruption. This indicates that the percolation threshold characterizes the inflation source region.

Based on the history of volcanic activity of Zao stage VI, we examined possible courses of future activity of Zao volcano. All activities will start with precursory phenomena. Next, phreatic eruptions from Okama crater or other place inner part of Umanose caldera will occur, and may cause ballistic materials release, ash fall, pyroclastic surge, and lahar. The possibility of small scales edifice collapse and lava flow swelled out is very low but should be included. When the activity progresses, magmatic eruptions will be taken place from Goshikidake, and cause same phenomena as in the phreatic eruptions but larger in scale. The possibility magmatic eruption takes place without preceding phreatic eruption can not be excluded. Rarely, the activity will go up further and resulted in sub-Plinian eruption. Aside from the above sequence, larger scale phreatic eruption from Goshikidake area should be listed, although the possibility of this is very low.

We developed a visualization tool of real-time GNSS time-series for the real-time crustal deformation monitoring. The developed system can draw the real-time GNSS time-series based on the user requirement in Web browser. The user can change drawing range of the time-series by graphical user interface. The drawn time-series is update automatically based on the processed GNSS time-series. These features will be useful for the actual crustal deformation monitoring by the realtime GNSS processing.

The geodetic research group of Tohoku University has been carrying out geodetic observations on shore and off shore of Miyagi Prefecture where earthquakes around M7.5 repeatedly occurred at intervals of about 40 years. We have been measuring horizontal movements of seafloor geodetic stations since 2003, using GPS-Acoustic (GPSA) seafloor positioning systems. We have also been continuously observing vertical crustal movements since 2008 using free-fall/pop-up ocean bottom pressure recorders (OBPRs). Owing to these geodetic observations that were made in the region above the rupture area of the 2011 M9.0 Tohoku-oki earthquake, we succeeded in detecting unexpectedly large coseismic crustal displacements that had never been measured with geodetic systems on the seafloor. We retrieved data from the OBPRs that had been deployed above the rupture area, and to continue monitoring gradual postseismic slips, we installed replacements for these OBPRs at the same observation sites. We presented a model for the coseismic slip distribution on the plate boundary, and it is widely referenced because it is a model that is constrained by the OBPR data as well as the GPSA and the terrestrial geodetic data. We have also developed a method of real-time kinematic analyses of the data from a GNSS array to estimate the approximate magnitude of large earthquakes within several minutes. We developed a procedure to reduce tidal and non-tidal oceanic components in OBPR data. The pressure data analyzed jointly with onshore strain data revealed that there was a slow slip event near the focal zone about one month before the main event. The observed pressure variations also contain information about the coseismic and postseismic crustal movements associated with the M7.3 earthquake that occurred on March 9 and was estimated to be the largest foreshock. These results are important for clarifying geophysical processes that preceded the giant earthquake.

The redundant communication pathway and processing strategy for satellite navigation system such as GPS is extremely important for more reliable quasi real-time crustal deformation monitoring in case of huge interplate earthquake occurrence. We tested real-time kinematic GPS processing (RTK-GPS) via satellite-based mobile phone for redundant communication pathway for address the vulnerabilities of the infrastructure. We succeed to get the stable time series via satellite mobile phone network with almost zero-missing data for short and long baseline RTK-GPS. We also assessed stability, precision and accuracy of StarFireTM global satellites based augmentation system for redundant processing strategy. In order to assess coordinate precision and accuracy, we compared 1Hz StarFire time series and post-processed precise point positioning (PPP) 1Hz time series by GIPSY-OASIS II processing software Ver. 6.1.2 with three different product types (ultrarapid, rapid, and final orbits). We also used different interval clock information (30 and 300 seconds) for the post-processed PPP processing. The standard deviation of real time StarFire time series is less than 30 mm (horizontal components) and 60 mm (vertical component) based on 1 month continuous processing. We also assessed noise spectrum of the estimated time series by StarFire and post-processed GIPSY PPP results. We found that the noise spectrum of StarFire time series is similar pattern with GIPSY-OASIS II processing result based on JPL rapid orbit products with 300 seconds interval clock information. Based on these stability and noise assessment, we suggest that the various communication pathways for RTK-GPS processing and various processing strategy such as global satellites based augmentation system with traditional RTK-GPS processing strategy is important for more reliable quasi real-time crustal deformation monitoring.

We assessed the performance of a permanent displacement detection algorithm, which was developed by the authors at previous study, by using long-term Real Time Kinematic-GPS(RTK-GPS)data processing. False detection of permanent displacement should be avoided for a reliable warning system. We examined the detection rate using RTK-GPS time series with various baselines and different reference sites for a long time period. The false detection rate was ∼0.25% with a 4 sigma confidence level for a single baseline. This false detection rate is inadequate for practical use in a large GPS network consisting of many stations, such as GEONET. We improved the permanent displacement detection algorithm to mitigate the false detection rate. In the improved algorithm, an earthquake occurrence is defined as when the target GPS site and all its neighboring GPS sites detect a displacement. We applied the improved algorithm to an actual data set. With our improved algorithm, the false detection rate decreases to less than 0.002%. When we can use several reference sites for the RTK-GPS data processing and compare results for each reference site, the false detection rate will become almost zero. The improved algorithm is also useful for the detection of small displacements, because it may be possible to lower a threshold value from 4 to 2 sigma while keeping the false detection level to acceptable limit.

The 140 tide gauge observatories located along the coastline of Japan have measured the sea levels for more than 100 years. A number of tide gauge records provide the information of the Earth's crustal activities associated with great earthquakes, e.g., the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake, that occur periodically at the oceanic plate boundaries. The present paper develops an analysis procedure using the particle filter algorithm, which enables us to extract the crustal displacements from monthly means of the tide gauge records. The proposed method results that the plate boundary called "Nankai Trough" offshore west Japan has been rapidly accumulating the stress and strain energies, which will cause a great earthquake eventually. This result supports the hypothesis that the Tokai-Tonankai-Nankai Earthquake may occur in near future.

Spatio-temporal distribution of quasi-static slip on the plate boundary east off Miyagi and Fukushima prefectures, NE Honshu, Japan is estimated by using small repeating earthquake data. The analysis of small repeating earthquakes has advantages of relatively high spatial resolution, especially near the trench, and the availability of long-term data (22 years) compared to GPS data. The results show that the repeating earthquakes are distributed outside the coseismic slip areas (asperities) of large earthquakes, showing that fault creep is dominant outside the asperities. The cumulative slip (slip histories) of small repeating earthquake groups reveal the existence of many non-steady aseismic slip events. Most of the episodic quasi-static slip events are associated with M≥ 6 earthquakes and they are frequently seen in the areas near the Japan trench in particular. Minor afterslip (∼15cm) of the 2005 Miyagi-oki earthquake (M7.2) is also estimated in the area which encompasses the coseismic slip area of the 2005 earthquake.

A typical interplate earthquake with M7.2 occurred on August 16, 2005 on the plate boundary off Miyagi Prefecture. Co- and post-seismic deformations associated with this event were investigated to reveal the causal interplate slips using continuous GPS data and geodetic inversion. The co-seismic slip distribution shows good agreement with that estimated by seismic waveform inversions. The major slip area is limited to the southeastern part of the rupture area of the 1978 Miyagi-oki earthquake (M7.4). The post-seismic slip extended uni-laterally to the southwest of the co-seismic slippage. These distinctive features both of the co- and post-seismic slips might be caused by the existence of the locked plate interface in the northern and southwestern parts of the 1978 rupture area, where seismogenic stress has not released yet.

A dense GPS network was established in 1997 around Ou Backbone Range (OBR), northeastern Japan, by deploying 9 new continuous GPS stations so as to complement the sparse portion of GEONET (GPS Earth Observation Network) operated by Geographical Survey Institute (GSI), Japan. This new observation network is aimed to investigate the present deformation and to understand the relationship between the occurrence of intraplate earthquakes and the deformation process of an island-arc crust.
GPS data are analyzed using a precise point positioning strategy of GIPSY/OASIS-II. Coordinates of the GEONET stations in daily SINEX files have been supplied by GSI. A map of the intraplate deformation field derived by combining the two data sets and by subtracting the motion of the North American Plate demonstrates displacements toward WNW along the Pacific coast. This is caused by the interplate coupling between the Pacific and North American Plates. Displacements along the Japan Sea coast, on the other hand, are considerably small in magnitude, and directed to NW and N in the southern and northern area, respectively. OBR lies halfway between the two coasts and shows the transitional pattern of both deformation characteristics.
By producing grid data of displacement velocities and taking spatial derivatives, we obtained a map of strain rate distribution. We found that the region between 38.8°N and 39.8°N in OBR demonstrates notable concentration of EW contraction. The region coincides with the area of active seismicity and includes the focal areas of 1896 (M7.2), 1962 (M6.5), 1970 (M6.2), and 1998 (M6.1) events. The observed strain is larger than can be explained by the total moment release of earthquakes that occurred in the same period of this study. Possible sources of the strain concentration may be viscoelastic deformation due to the large earthquakes and/or aseismic slip along the deeper extension of active faults.

To monitor the crustal deformation associated with the Usu volcano unrest from 27th March, 2001, we started GPS observations from 28th March, 2001 using Ashtech Z-XII receivers. We succeeded installing 6 new continuous stations around the volcano before the beginning of the eruption at 13:07 (JST), 31st March, 2000. Data were collected via a cellular-phone telemetry system. We carried out automatic rapid data analysis every 3 hours using the Bernese GPS Software Version 4.2, Bernese Processing Engine and IGS predicted ephemeredes. Results were published immediately on the WWW server at Hokkaido University to monitor the volcanic activity. From our GPS observations, we find that: (1) cumulative horizontal displacements from 29th March to noon of 31st March, 2000 exceeded 1 m at the KON, OHD, UVO stations, (2) just before the beginning of the eruption, striking deformation was observed at KON located right above the new crater, (3) after the beginning of the eruption, large scale crustal deformation was generally terminated

The relationship between volcanic and seismic activities observed around Iwate volcano in 1998 are discussed. The first subject is the relation between the seismic activity and the ground deformation, which were simultaneously observed in the period from February to August, 1998. The seismic activity is a characterized by westward extension of the focal region in the western part of the volcano. The ground deformation is explained by moving sources of tensile faults and pressure sources located near the west end of the focal region at each twomonth period considered. The synchronism of these phenomena is explained by the idea that both of the activities are two different aspects of volcanic activity caused by the westward migration of magma in the western part of the volcano. The idea is confirmed by the examination using the temporal change of the Coulomb failure function (ΔCFF). The second subject is the relation between the volcanic activity mentioned above and a moderate earthquake (M6.1) of Sept. 3, 1998, that took place at 10 km SW from the summit of the volcano. The ΔCFF calculated from the source model for the volcanic ground deformation shows no evidence that the volcanic activity triggered the earthquake. On the other hand, temporal changes in seismicity in the volcanic area are explained as the effects of the stress changes caused by the earthquake. Nevertheless, some relations between the seismic activities and the volcanic activity are explained by changes in static stress, but there remain other phenomena that were observed at the same time and whose relationships are not yet understood.

17 people were killed and 6 people are-still missing by the Iwate-Miyagi Nairiku Earthquake occurred in June 2008. Most of the disaster were caused by landslides in mountain side in Miyagi prefecture, North Japan. In order to detect automobiles buried in deep soil, we developed a system combining a metal detector (EMI sensors) for UXO detection with RTK-GPS, which can visualize the metal detector response. Due to the high accuracy of the positioning by RTK-GPS, 3D visualization of the metal detector response on the steep slope of 50m in width by 150m in height at maximum 45 degree was obtained. We found that we can roughly identify the shape of the buried metal objects, and therefore we could discriminate larger objects from metal fragments such as reinforcement bars in concrete blocks. We identified three possible points where cars can be buried in that area.

We investigate crustal deformation in the Japan Islands combining geodetic, seismological, and geological approaches in order to understand the deformation processes in various spatio-temporal scales in a comprehensive manner. We find that long-lasting inelastic deformation is going on almost universally associated with active faults, playing an essential role in generation of inland earthquakes and geomorphic features. For a long time, geological and geodetic observations have been considered contradictory each other. But we have proven that these data can be integrated for better understanding of the whole deformation process of the Japan Islands.

In order to study crustal uplifting and gravity change in southeastern Alaska, United States, we carried out continuous GPS and gravity measurements together with absolute gravity survey three times in the area. From the continuous GPS measurements, the maximum uplifting rate of 3 cm/year, which is consistent with the previous study, was derived. Since the continuous gravity measurements by a superconducting gravimeter demonstrated very small, almost no instrumental drift rate, we may be able to use the gravimeter complementing the absolute gravity survey. Gravity change rates obtained by the survey show -1 to -3 micro-gal/year, which is about a half of those for the period from 2006 to 2008. This discrepancy can be attributed to the effects of underground water and/or loading of precipitation.

In this research, we have been aiming to analyze details of lock and slip on the plate boundary under the Pacific Ocean in NE Japan and to understand the generation mechanism of interplate earthquakes. The main research contents are: 1. analysis of repeating earthquakes, 2. analysis of source process of medium & large earthquakes based on broadband seismic waveform data, 3. GPS data analysis, 4. research on the property of asperities by using numerical simulation. According to the result of 1. analysis of repeating earthquakes, we successfully estimated the time variation of interplate slips around the rupture zone of the 2003 Tokachi-oki earthquake, by identifying the repeating earthquakes in all parts of the plate boundary under the Pacific Ocean from Hokkaido to NE Japan. As for the 2. analysis of source process based on seismic waveform data, we showed that the rupture area of Miyagi-oki earthquake (M7.2) on Aug. 16, 2005 is overlapped with the southeastern part of the rupture area of the 1978 Miyagi-oki earthquake. So, this means that the asperities of the 1978 earthquake located in the north and west part are left unruptured; our research pointed out the importance of continued and careful observation on this area. Moreover, we conducted reanalysis of aftershocks of Miyagi-oki earthquakes with magnitude >7 in 1930s, and found out that three asperities could have slipped separately, in three times, in the case of 1930s' Miyagi-oki earthquakes. With 3. GPS analysis, after 2005 Miyagi-oki earthquake, we detected the after slip which spread toward south of the rupture area of the event. This observation result corresponds with the result of seismic-waveform inversion analysis; the northern and western asperities are left unruptured. The result of 4. numerical simulation analysis shows that, in order to explain the propagation velocity of the after slip observed in the deep plate boundary close to land, pore pressure around the plate boundary should be extremely large. On the other hand, in order to explain the propagation velocity of the after slip observed in the shallow plate boundary close to the trench, large pore pressure is not necessary like in the case above. These results suggest the depth variation in the amount of water supplied to the plate boundary, which was caused by dehydration reaction, or the depth variation in coefficient of permeability around the plate boundary. As mentioned above, through this research, we have achieved substantial results to enhance understanding of the generation mechanism of interplate earthquakes.

The objectives of this research program are to investigate for spatial and temporal variations in crustal deformation induced by the subducting plate motion through seafloor geodetic observation in the vicinity of the subduction plate boundary, and to estimate the repeatability of the seafloor geodetic observation. Repeated precise seafloor positioning based on sea surface KGPS positioning and underwater acoustic ranging has been carried out off Iwate and Miyagi prefectures, and has been initiated off Fukushima Prefecture. Judging from seismic activities off Fukushima, seismic coupling on the plate boundary in the region can be relatively weak. However, land-based GPS observation in these several years suggests strong coupling off Fukushima as well as off Miyagi. Although the estimated error is fairly large in the crustal deformation obtained from two-year observations, the result shows that the seismic coupling off Fukushima is as strong as that off Miyagi. The coupling off Fukushima may possibly show temporal variation. GPS/Acoustic (GPS/A) seafloor positioning off Kii Peninsula detected a large co-seismic crustal movement up to 30 cm associated with the 2004 earthquake (M7.4) off Kii Peninsula. The repeatability of the positioning obtained from an observation for two days is estimated to be about 3-5 cm. This value was larger than the estimated displacements at our GPS/A sites associated with the 2005 earthquake off Miyagi Prefecture. We confirmed that the value can be improved with higher GPS sampling. Long-term ocean bottom pressure monitoring was carried out off Iwate Prefecture under two crossover points of the satellite tracks for altimetry. The results coincide with recent five ocean tide models within 1.3 cm in terms of root sum square of vector differences for eight principal constituents. Although we have acquired know-how for long-term ocean bottom pressure monitoring, we need more research works to get long-term stability of pressure monitoring.

Subduction zones around Japan are covered with sediments, where precise geodetic measurements for observation of seafloor crustal movements can be difficult. This study aims at examining the stability of seafloor geodetic measurements on the sediments: tilt measurements on a platform with pipes installed in sefloor sediments, precise point positioning and observation of ocean bottom pressure variations with self-landing instruments We have developed two sets of ocean bottom tiltmeter system for deployment by a remotely operated vehicle. The tiltmeter was divided into two parts for operation on the seafloor. A procedure for automatic leveling of the gimbals was improved to reduce consumption of the batteries We have confirmed resolution and stability of qaurtz pressure sensor through analysis of ocean bottom pressure data observed by three sensors over a spreading axis of the southern Pacific Rise for 14 manths in 1997-98. All of the sensors recorded pressure increase following the demise of the big 1997-98 El Nino event. The pressure variation suggests an ocean dynamics which can explain an abrupt change of J2 term of the Earth's gravity field. The results also suggest depression of the seafloor near the spreading center In July 2002 we could visually observe how a seafloor instrument for point positioning was deployed on the seafloor covered with thick sedimentary layer. The base of the instrument, 1m square of FRP mesh, looked quite stable and sunk only 1cm or less after deployment of 1year. We could confirm that we can carry out precise pressure monitoring and point positioning on thick sediments by using such a base

Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region is located in the junction zone of Tibet block, North China block and Ordos block. Two GPS campaigns were operated at five newly constructed stations in 1997, which have revealed that Tibet block was moved toward northeast with a rate of about 3cm per year due to the collision between the Indian and Eurasian plates. In 1997, a PC-based data acquisition system for seismographs was installed at the Seismological Bureau of Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region, Yinchuan, China by Tohoku University, which has enabled to locate hypocenters accurately and to record digital wave form data. Preliminaly investigations of waveforms show the existence of some distinctive later phases, which are thought to be reflectors in the crust. The quality of waveform data is so high that it may be possible to be used for future researches of source process of earthquakes, seismic tomography, and so on.

Gravity survey was carried out crossing the Lembang and Cimandiri Faults. Gravity measurements were made with 500n intervals, and GPS observations were also made for precise positioning. A preliminary analysis shows that there is a density contrast between both sides of the faults and that the existence of a layer which tilts to north is expected. A Reconnaissance seismic observation near the Lembang fault was carried out for about 10 days in October 1997. Two seismographs were set near the Lembang fault. The seismograph consists of three component seismometers with a natural frequency of 2Hz, a digital recorder and a GPS receiver for timing. The recorder has an amplifier, a 16 bit AD-converter and DAT recording system. Some small earthquakes were observed during the observation period. According to reports of the volcanic activity, seismic swarms sometimes occur near active volcanoes. Therefore, seismic activity for small earthquake is not so low near the volcanoes, but not so high near the Lembang fault. GPS network extended in 1996 was repeatedly observed with Ashtech Z12 and Leica System 300 receivers. The network consists of 7 stations. The size of the network is about 10km and the prcision of positioning is a few mm in rms in average. From repeated GPS measurements a deformation which seems to indicate the buldge of the body of Guntur volcano was detected. Though the deformation is small compared with the positioning precision, it is in agreement with the result from leveling survey at the southeastern foot of the volcaco. In December 1997 an international symposium was held in Kyoto and investigators of this project participated in the symposium and special meeting in order to discuss the results of this program about the tectonics and structure of Lembang and Cimandiri faults.

A tsunami is ususlly considered to be generated by an earthquake. Once fault parameters are given, the initial tsunami profile is calculated with the elastic theory. It is assumed that the vertical displacement of sea bottom is closely related to the fault movement. However, this assumption is not always true. 1) In case of the 1983 Nihonkai-Chubu earthquake composed of two faults, a secondary fault in the north fault and a non-seismic movement are necessary in order to explain earlier arrival of the actual tsunami than the computed tsunami for the major fault movement determined by seismic data. 2) In case of the 1992 Nicaraguan tsunami, in spite of a large tsunami, the earthquake was very weak, as 2 in the JMA intensity scale. Whether this tsunami was generated by the earthquake or by other mechanism was examined. It is concluded that this earthquake was a tsunami earthquake. 3) In case of the 1993 Hokkaido Nansei-oki earthquake, the first tsunami arrived at the western coast of Hokkaido 5 minutes faster than that generated at the place of the fault estimated from seismic data. This strongly suggests that other tsunami generation mechanism than the earthquake should be found in the area between the fault and the coast. 4)The 1883 Krakatau tsunami which was not generated by an earthquake but by a caldera formation was numerically simulated. A method is developed to stably simulate a sudden fall of water at the initial profile.

    (1) We analyzed SmKS and PKP waves recorded by the GDSN in order to survey the lateral heterogeneity in the lower mantle and at the top of the Earth's core. The spherical harmonic analysis revealed that the hemishperical (degree 1) pattern in the heterogeneities predominants at the top of the Earth's outer core and inner core beneath the African continent. (2) We developed the small and low-power data logger with the precise GPS clock. This equipments were applied successfully to the field observations in the volcanic regions in Africa. (3) The Nyiragongo volcano in eastern Zaire presents the highest potential threat to human lives in Goma region, partly because of the abnormal increasing population fleeing from Rwanda and partly because of the lack of mitigation plan by the local government. (4) The recent volcano-magmatic activity of Nyiragongo and Nyamuragira are summarized as follows ; (a) After the initial episode of eruption in the lava-lake, we observed at least 37 eruptive episodes in the period from June, 1994 to February, 1995. The most significant features in the episodic pattern are not only the intermittent appearance of active periods but also the change of their tempo that happened at the middle of December, 1994. Since January, 1995, the intermittency has declined and continuous features of tremors with small amplitudes became predominant, which suggests that dike-like ocnduit changed to the open conduit system. (b) The seismic activity shows rather concentrated features at the depth of about 15 km just beneath the Nyiragongo carter. The earthquakes with very shallow focal depths were not located closely to the Nyiragongo crater. (c) The pattern of continuously recorded tilt vector indicates that Nyiragongo has slowly inflated since the beginning of eruption. This inflation was probably caused by the storage of excess magma in the very shallow reservoir or in the lava lake.

Inelastic deformation of rocks under uniaxial loading of compresion reflects the stresses that have been previously applied to the rocks. This effects of the previous stresses on the inelastic strain is called the rock property of stress memory. The absolute values of in situ stresses are suggested to be estimated from boring core samples by the method of deformation rate analysis(DRA) which has been developed on the basis of the property of the stress memory. We call the memory of the absolute values of in situ stress as in situ stress memory. In situ stress memory is however an unexpected property from the established knowledge on the deformation of rocks. We carried out this study for the purposes as follows ; 1) to confirm that the stresses estimated from core samples by DRA are regarded as the in situ stresses at the places where the samples were retrieved, 2) to propose a hypothesis for the explanation of in situ stress memory and 3) to prove the validity of the hypothesis. We compared the vertical stresses estimated by DRA on boring core samples up to 842 m depth with the calculated overburden pressures. a) We confirmed by the comparisom that rocks have in situ stress memory. b) We proposed the hypothesis that stress field in rocks has been uniformed at the in situ stresses which are almost constant for a long time and theoretically proved that the in situ stress memory is explianed by the hypothesis. The hypothesis predicts that the compliance of rock specimens decreases to the minimum at an applied stress nearly equal to the constant stress that has been being applied to the specimen for a long time. c) We experimentally found the decrease in the compliance for the rock specimens which have been subjected to a constant stress for a time more than 3 days.

Along the northeastern Japan arc the Pacific plate is subducting beneath the continental plate on which the Japan islands lie. The subduction motion is not uniform either in space or in time. At shallow depths of the boundary between the two plates large earthquakes occasionally take place to produce almost instantaneously a significant amount of slip motion. At large depths, say deeper than 100 km, stable sliding seems to occur at the plate boundary. It may be reasonable to expect that aseismic but episodic slip occurs intermittently at intermediate depths. The present study is thus undertaken to examine the possibility of aseismic slip events propagating at very low speeds in relation to the slip nucleation process. Laboratory experiments were performed on a rock specimen with a pre-existing fault to generate stick-slip events with various propagation velocities. It is found that slip events with anomalously low propagation velocities are easy to occur on a composite fault made from granite and marble. This suggests the possibility of episodic slip events with very low rupture velocities on the inhomogeneous plate boundary. During the slip-weakening process acoustic emissions are found to be generated supposedly by microfractures of asperities on the fault. Their foci are located inside the slip nucleation zone. This implies that microscopically unstable phenomena (microfractures) are involved in a macroscopically stable phenomenon (stable sliding). In 1992 a large shallow earthquake of low-angle thrust fault type with the magunitude of 6.9 took place at the plate boundary in the region off the coast of Sanriku, Honshu, Japan. Following this shock noticeable post-seismic strain changes were recorded by extensometers at two stations, Miyako and Esashi, which are located near the coast of Sanriku. The observed strain changes are well explained by the model in which aseismic slip with a dacay constant of 12 hours is assumed to take place in the hypocentral region of the main shock. The seismic moment of the aseismic slip is found to be nearly the same as that of the main shock.

The aim of this project is to reveal the feature of the crustal movement around the junction of the Kurile and the Northeastern arc, and to understand the difference of tectonics between Hokkaido and Northeastern Japan. In order to achieve the purpose, We established a regional GPS observation network for repeated campaign in Hokkaido, and performed the continuous measurements in Tohoku district. The correction of atmospheric path delay is also studied. The regional GPS network of which baseline's length ranges from 100 to 300 km is established in Hokkaido. Some local network for research on prediction of earthquakes and volcanic eruption is also founded. Repeated campaigns of GPS measurements for the regional network are performed, and Short term repeatabilities are obtained less than 0.3ppm. The regional network detected the crustal deformation associated with the 1993 Hokkaido Nansei-Oki earthquake. Continuous measurements with on site recording at 2 new sites installed just after this event reveals post-seismic deformation. The Continuous measurements carried out by using the network established in Tohoku district. It is confirmed that the continuous GPS array allows to detect variation of baseline with high temporary resolution and is effective to obtain the intraplate deformations. A new correction method of atmospheric path delay based on the numerical weather prediction data have been developed. This study reveals that the data set of perceptible water vapor and temperature obtained by the GPS networks are useful to improve the accuracy of numerical prediction model. A new system combined the numerical prediction with the GPS meteorology through the estimation of atmospheric path delay.
