Radiometric calibration utilizing the Moon as a reference source is termed as lunar calibration. It is a useful method for evaluating the performance of optical sensors onboard satellites orbiting the Earth. Lunar calibration provides sufficient radiometric calibration opportunities without requiring any special equipment, and is suitable for nano/microsatellites. This study applies lunar calibration to a multispectral sensor, Ocean Observation Camera (OOC), on board a microsatellite named Rapid International Scientific Experiment Satellite. Simulating the brightness of the Moon based on the RObotic Lunar Observatory and SELENE/Spectrum Profiler models, sensitivity degradation was proven to be negligible in any of the four spectral bands of the OOC with the sensor temperature correction. A bluing trend in the OOC’s sensor sensitivity was revealed, indicating a shorter observation wavelength shows larger irradiance. Comparing the top-of-atmosphere reflectance of Railroad Valley Playa with the Radiometric Calibration Network dataset revealed that the derived calibration parameter from the lunar calibration was valid for correcting the bluing trend in the visible range. Although the lunar and vicarious calibration parameters for the infrared band were unexpectedly inconsistent, lunar calibration could potentially contribute toward estimating the contaminated background radiance in the Earth observation images.

The Space Robotics Laboratory (SRL) of Tohoku University and ALE Co., Ltd. have developed a 60-kg-class microsatellite ALE-1, which generates artificial meteors by releasing meteor source pellets towards the Earth. The purpose of this research is to establish a system for ground evaluation and operation training of ALE-1. This satellite requires an accurate orbit and attitude determination technique for operation safety and mission success. A triple redundant system with multiple independent sensors is adopted for ensuring safe operation. A generic ground evaluation system “MEVIμS” is applied to evaluate such a complicated satellite bus system. MEVIμS has a high reliability and flexibility based on the results of its application to past micro-satellite projects. This system contains a satellite simulator with a space dynamics calculator with a high accuracy as well as mathematical models of the space environment and satellite components. A hardware-in-the-loop simulation can be carried out to evaluate the satellite hardware with on-board software by connecting to the simulator virtually. The performance evaluation of the attitude control system and comprehensive mission operational tests were carried out by MEVIμS. The simulation result demonstrated that ALE-1 reached a sufficient level of attitude control accuracy to realize the mission. The result also confirmed that the mission sequence was performed successfully as the mission feasibility and the operation safety were validated. ALE-1 was launched by the fourth Epsilon rocket on January 18, 2019 and initial operation is in progress. Further improvement of the ALE-1 system can be executed by repeated operation training under various conditions to enhance the chance of mission success.

Lubrication of bearings is the most significant element for high-speed rotation of a flywheel in a vacuum environment. This paper proposes a new reaction wheel for cubesats using a solid lubricant bearing. Generally, metal ball bearings and liquid lubricant are used for reaction wheels because liquid lubricant enables stable rotation even in a high-speed range. In contrast, liquid lubricant has a defect that lubrication becomes insufficient when its rotation stops. To protect bearings, it is desirable that a flywheel keeps rotating above a certain speed like momentum wheels. However, this is difficult for cubesats because there is insufficient power supply. To solve this problem, new reaction wheels were developed using polyether ether ketone ball bearings with polytetrafluoroethylene solid lubricant. It can maintain the lubrication effect even if a non-rotational state continues for a long period. Results of this evaluation found that the developed reaction wheel had a maximum torque of 0.189 mNm and a maximum angular momentum of 0.657 mNms. The performance is equivalent when compared to that of conventional-type reaction wheels.

In recent years, microsatellites have attracted great attention for their low cost, rapid development, and utilization capability. Demand for more requirements is increasing, and reliable attitude control is indispensable for secure operation. An Earth sensor is typically used to detect the direction of Earth's center relative to the spacecraft's attitude. Unlike Sun sensors, an Earth sensor can be functional even in the eclipse region in orbit, which enables a spacecraft to determine its attitude regardless of orbital position. The thermopile-based Earth sensor developed in this research is designed to have full sky coverage, i.e., it is operational independent of satellite attitude. Therefore, it can be used in safe-hold-mode operation. As a result of this research, an Earth sensor is realized by utilizing multiple thermopile sensors. The geocentric vector can be determined from the output voltages of thermopiles that are mounted on the entire satellite in a distributed manner and pointed in different directions. In order to establish a data processing algorithm, the output voltage and angle characteristics of the sensors were investigated analytically and experimentally. A numerical model of the sensor was developed, and its performance in orbit was evaluated in a software-based simulation and verification environment.

The Space Robotics Laboratory (SRL) of Tohoku University has been developing micro-satellites for years and has gained experience in their development, verification, integration, and operation. The SRL has recently started the development of model-based simulation, verification, and integration environment to realize rapid and cost-effective development of reliable micro-satellites. The conceptual design and its functionality have been verified through the real-life 50-kg-class micro-satellite projects RISING-2 and RISESAT. The developed environment can be utilized in different configurations such as full-software simulation, hardware-in-the-loop simulation, and even flight operation, depending on demands in each satellite development phase. This environment is designed to be modular and flexible. The minimum hardware configuration can be a single personal computer, which enables low-cost introduction of a satellite system simulator for a wide range of projects in a variety of project phases. It can be utilized for general micro-satellite missions and possibly even much smaller space systems in the future. Micro-satellite RISING-2 is the first satellite tested by means of this environment. Functionality of the developed simulation and verification environment was evaluated by comparing the ground simulation results and flight data obtained by RISING-2.

The 2-unit size cubesat RAIKO is a nanosatellite developed by Tohoku University and Wakayama University. This paper shows the mission and system specifications. The satellite was released to space on October 4, 2012 from International Space Station, which was the 419-km alt. circular orbit. The techniques for 50-kg microsatellites by Tohoku University are transferred to this satellite, so a lot of functions are included although the power and mass budgets are strongly restricted. The primary missions are the photo storage by different 3 optical sensors, the de-orbit mechanism experiment by expandable thin films, and Ku-band downlink communication experiment. The satellite operation was finished by orbital decay on August 6, 2013. The telemetry data were successful received in total 123 passes, in which total 63 photo images were obtained and maximum 100 kbps (200 ksps) downlink was successful. Using color CMOS camera, gradually separating ISS could be confirmed. From analysis of house-keeping data, the solar generation power in sunshine was 3.38 W (no paddles) to 5.77 W (with paddles) in average, the temperature of onboard computer was in the range of 20.8 to 28.7 deg C, and the battery temperature was 4.2 deg C in average. The real flight data from the 10-month operation will be precious information for future nanosatellite projects.

Recently the activities for the development of micro- and nano- satellites like a cubesat are being increased. A lot of satellites are operated at a ground station located in a university, but public orbit information is used. In this paper, the orbit determination system is constructed using observations of Doppler frequency at a low-cost ground station. The traditional batch state estimation filter is used, and the orbital elements of satellite position and velocity in inertia coordinates are determined from the Doppler frequency of receiving signals. The verification tests are conducted using UHF-band signals (about 430 MHz) received at an amateur radio station and S-band signals (about 2.2 GHz) received at a 2.4-m parabola antenna from real satellites, and the valid performance is conformed for tracking satellites not depending on public orbit information. The error is max. 0.3 degrees in direction and max. 3.9 km in position for UHF-band signals, and max. 1.1 degrees in direction and max. 37 km in position for S-band signals. This method is valid especially for low-earth-orbit satellites with large Doppler effect.

The development of 50kg-class micro-satellite RISING-2 was started in 2009 by Tohoku University. At the time of Jun, 2012, the development of flight model of hardware was completed, and the adjustment of software and others is continued aimed its launch in 2013. The satellite has a telescope with 10cm diameter and lm focal length, and it takes images with 5m resolution. It can observe multi-spectrum images using liquid crystal tunable filter as well as RGB color photos. The primary mission is the observation of cumulonimbus clouds in visible near infrared. Also, transient luminous events in upper atmosphere such as sprite are observed using CMOS sensors. This paper shows the latest specifications of FM, and the result of test was carried out so far and task-schedule of future.

The microsatellite SPRITE-SAT developed by Tohoku University was launched in January 2009. Regarding the thermal system of SPRITE-SAT, the mathematical model, the parameter determination for the heat transfer coefficients, and the comparison between the estimate and real temperature in flight mode are shown in this paper. The precision of thermal analysis using the simple 7-node model was solved. The estimate error of temperature in orbit is less than 5 degrees Celsius in panels with most of instruments.

The 50-kg class micro satellite RISING-2 is now under development by Tohoku University and Hokkaido University. The development is at Flight Model phase and some components are tested to evaluate its specifications. In this paper, the endurance tests using vacuum chamber and thermal test chamber in Tohoku University are described. There was no problem in those tests. In addition, the attitude control accuracy of the RISING-2 was analyzed in the simulation. This simulation based on component specifications and also included noise data. The results show the pointing error angle was less than required error angle.

Tohoku University is now finishing the development of its second 50-kg class Earth observation microsatellite RISING-2. RISING-2 is equipped with four camera systems with eight different imaging sensors, including a 5-m ground resolution cassegrain mirror telescope with three fixed wavelength filters in red, green, and blue, as well as a liquid crystal tunable filter. RISING-2 aims to achieve agile high resolution multi-spectral Earth observations. For this mission, Tohoku University has been developing a precise and agile attitude control system including multiple sensors and actuators. The pointing error is required to be less than 0.1 deg and the pointing knowledge shall be better than 0.06 deg. The designed star sensor is based on CCD image sensor which has a flight heritage by the university's first satellite RISING. This system utilizes a pyramid algorithm for secure constellation identification and works with a maximum update frequency of 2 Hz. Its availability is also very high in terms of the satellite's operating angular velocity. In this paper, the system integration of the star sensor as well as the results of its ground based performance evaluation is described in detail.

Tohoku University and Hokkaido University started the development of a new 50-kg microsatellite RISING-2 at July 2009. This satellite inherits the development technique of RISING (SPRITE-SAT) launched on January 2009. The progress is shown in this paper. Using a Cassegrain telescope with 10-cm diameter and 1-m focal length, earth surface is observed with 5-m resolution from 700-km-alt sun synchronous orbit. By 3-axis attitude stabilization using reaction wheels and star sensors, the designated area on earth surface can be observed. In addition to color images, multi-spectrum images of cumulonimbus are observed by using a liquid crystal tunable filter. As a secondary mission, transient luminous events such as sprite are observed, which is same mission as SPRITE-SAT.

A balloon borne telescope is one of the space observation methods by carrying a telescope to the stratosphere with a huge balloon in order to be free from the atmospheric influences on observations. The authors have been developing a balloon borne telescope system for optical observations of other planets in the solar system. The observation aimed to achieve finer images of the planets than those taken by ground telescopes, which required the balloon borne telescope to hold the target star with subarcsec precision during the exposure of the camera. To meet the requirement, the system is equipped three stage pointing system. This article introduces the overview of the flight campaign and the flight system, and reports the pointing performance verified in ground experiments.

SPRITE-SAT is a micro satellite in the size of 50 cm cube and weighing 45-kg, designed and developed by Tohoku University. Its mission objective is to conduct scientific observation of atmospheric luminous emissions called "sprites" and terrestrial Gamma-ray flushes. Both are recently discovered phenomena and their mechanisms are still under the veil. SPRITE-SAT was developed to achieve significant observations to determine clear models of these mysterious phenomena. On January 23rd, 2009, SPRITE-SAT was successfully launched by JAXA's H-IIA rocket as a piggyback payload of Greenhouse Gas Observation Satellite (GOSAT). The spacecraft is now in a sun-synchronous polar orbit with 670 km altitude from the Earth's surface. This paper describes a general overview of the spacecraft and its mission.

The development of Ground Station Network (GSN) was proposed to achieve advanced operation for nano-satellites by the collaboration of university ground stations. GSN is a network of ground stations of universities and colleges and member stations are controlled remotely via the Internet. The service of the receiving station network was used in cubesat operation. GSN in receiving station service showed improvement of the amount of downlink data. The international network with collaboration of ground stations was carried out. The status data and picture data were acquired during the hand-over operation. As the result of international network operation, the collaborative operation with ground station abroad improves visible time and operation data received per one day. Doppler shift was measured using an amateur radio. The maximum difference of predicted frequency and measured frequency was detected for each pass. The correction method of TLE was tested using the frequency difference. The measurement result with corrected TLE from old TLE showed good agreement to the result with the new TLE.

Tohoku University and Rikkyo University are carrying out the project of Venus observation with high precision using a balloon-borne telescope. In this paper, the outline of Balloon-Borne Telescope for the optical remote sensing of Venus is introduced, and the simulation model of three-stage control method is constructed. For this observation, the pointing technology with high precision to restrain the slight moving of image is necessary. The target precision is only 0.1 arc seconds. The dynamics and control model is defined firstly, and the model parameters are determined by the experimental verification. By developing the numerical simulation tool, the motion can be estimated in the simulator, and the control strategy can be more easily optimized compared to the gain adjustment only based on experiments.

Tohoku University is now developing the 50-kg microsatellite named SPRITE-SAT, and this is launched by Japanese H-IIA rocket as a piggy-back satellite in the beginning of 2009. The SPRITE-SAT observes one of transient luminous events (TLEs) in the middle and upper atmosphere, called "sprites", and terrestrial gamma-ray flashes (TGFs). The mission of SPRITE-SAT is to solve the generation mechanism of these events. The satellite has a new-model deployable mast, and the bottom panel loading almost mission instruments is pointing to the earth by the gravity gradient torque. In this paper, missions and the satellite system are explained.

In Kagoshima University, development of a pico-satellite KSAT2 with a size of 10-cm cube is in progress in cooperation with local companies. This satellite is going to be orbited into an altitude of 400 km, and be affected a big orbital disturbance with the atmospheric drag. Therefore, a Ku-band beacon transmitter is equipped in the satellite for exploring a position of the satellite from the ground. The transmitter has an output of 1 mW and is installed separately from a transmitter for telemetry. Pico-satellite RAIKO equipped with a transmitter about the same with KSAT-2 was launched in the beginning of October, 2012. The satellite development group of Kagoshima University is receiving the Ku-band beacon of this satellite to check the orbit change of the satellite. In this report, situations of the Ku-band beacon reception and the satellite orbit change in the low altitude are shown.

This paper briefly summarizes the trend of small satellite development activities in European community. Recently, the importance of small satellite development activity, especially in terms of education, is getting recognized in Europe and a large amount of organizations and institutions are now taking part of the stream. Though the initiation of the CubeSat projects in Europe was relatively late, there are nowadays not only CubeSat projects but also many middle-sized small satellites under development. In this paper some exemplary small satellite projects in Europe both CubeSats and middle-sized small satellites are described. Based on the experience of author obtained through a 5-years-long research activity at the University of Stuttgart in Germany, exemplary system architecture of modern middle-sized small satellites is described. Along the European small satellite development activities future key technologies are becoming available, which can be also of Japanese interest. For example, space plug and play avionics products marketed in Europe are possible targets to be introduced to Japanese future small satellites. The aspect that most of the European products are ITAR-free makes them very attractive to communities outside Europe including Japan. On the contrary, Japanese small satellites-related products and technologies will be highly welcomed by the European community. In this sense Europe can be one of the strong partners of Japan as well as a possible customer of Japanese small satellite technologies. The author strongly recommends that Japan actively cooperate with European community to achieve rapid technology development and demonstrations.

A pico-satellite HAYATO (KSAT) was launched on the piggyback of HIIA 17 from Tanegashima Space Center on May 21, 2010, and put into a circular orbit of altitude of 300 km. The satellite has a 10-cm cube structure, and its weight is 1.43 kg. Uplink and downlink frequencies are S-band and Ku-band, respectively. We had successfully caught telemetry signals with a ground control system at Kagoshima University after eleven days of the satellite launch. This is a first case of Ku-band operation for 10-cm cube satellites. After seven straight day's operation, we had lost signals. Despite of the unremitting work to seek the satellite, the altitude of the satellite rapidly delayed due to drag produced by an atmosphere and disappeared on July 14. In this report, outline of the ground control system and results of satellite tracking are described.

A balloon-borne telescope system has been developed for remote sensing of the planets from the polar stratosphere. In this system, a Schmidt-Cassegrain telescope with a 300-mm clear aperture is mounted on a gondola whose attitude is controlled by control moment gyros, an active decoupling motor, and attitude sensors. The gondola can float in the stratosphere for periods in excess of 1 week. A pointing stability of 0.1"rms will be achieved by the cooperative operation of the following three-stage pointing devices: a gondola-attitude control system, twoaxis telescope gimbals for coarse guiding, and a tip/tilt mirror mount for guiding error correction. The first experiment of the balloon-borne telescope system was conducted on June 3, 2009 in Taikicho, Hokkaido targeting Venus. The balloon was launched at 4:10 JST and the system has been operating perfectly for two hours after launch. During the first level flight at an attitude of 14 km attitude control was activated. Oscillation of the azimuthal angle of the gondola was damped at an expected rate and the gondola was stabilized within an error of 1?rms for a several minutes. Unfortunately capture of Venus images by the telescope was aborted because of failure in the onboard computer occurred at two hours after launch. However, from the video signal from the Sun sensor azimuthal angular velocity of the free gondola is estimated to be 20°/min or slower. These results from the experiments including the ground-based tests suggest that the basic system concept of the balloon-borne telescope, especially the attitude control and tracking technology, is correct. A more robust and a dependable onboard computer is required for a future experiment.

In order to study the generation mechanism of lightning-associated transient luminous events (TLEs) and the relationship between lightning and TLEs, we will carry out the lightning and TLE observation at Exposed Facility of Japanese Experiment Module (JEM-EF) of International Space Station (ISS). In this mission named JEM-GLIMS (Global Lightning and sprlte MeasurementS on JEM-EF) two kinds of optical instruments and two sets of radio receivers will be integrated into the Multi mission Consolidated Equipment (MCE) which is the bus system and will be installed at JEM-EF finally. For the development of the GLIMS instruments, mechanical FEM analysis and thermal analysis are the important tasks to be performed by the mission team. Science group of the GLIMS mission has contacted to professors who belong to the department of engineering in an university and are an expert of the mechanical and thermal analysis. By their tremendous cooperation, GLIMS mission could pass the numerous reviews. Though many science mission using very small satellite will be planned in near future, strong mutual cooperation between science group and engineering group is important.

The circumpolar stratospheric telescope FUJIN-2 has been developed for observations of planetary atmospheres and plasmas. The dynamics, chemistry and identification of an UV abosorber of the Vinus atmosphere are selected as the first scientific target. Development of the hardware of FUJIN-2 has been promoted based on the experimental data obtained by FUJIN-1. Development of the optics, electrical and attitude control systems has been completed. A balloon experiment at ESRANGE in Kiruna, Sweden has been proposed. As an important scientific result about the Venus atmosphere large stationary thermal structures have been discovered by the Longwave Infrared Camera onboard the Venus orbiter Akatsuki. From detaied analysis of the observed data it is suggested that atmospheric gravity waves generated in the lower atmosphere by the solar radiation energy propagate to the cloud-top altitudes forming the structures.

We statistically compared wind data at lower troposphere based on wind profiler radars with precipitation distribution data based on C-band weather radar in order to investigate the effects of interaction between terrain and lower wind on precipitation patterns in the Fukui plain. The results show detailed precipitation patterns in the Fukui plain are classified by wind at altitude lower than 1 km. In particular, localized strong rainfall often occurs in the northern area of Fukui plain in the condition that wind at altitude lower than 1 km is westerly. These results indicate the measurement of lower wind at altitude lower than 1 km is important on local weather forecasting.
