Abstract This study discussed the migration of cesium (Cs) ions through porous media under unsaturated conditions in the shallow subsurface for the disposal of low-level radioactive waste. In the flow experiments, the column was packed with sand particles and placed horizontally, considering that the water saturation was distributed as uniformly as possible in the flow direction. From X-ray computed tomography observation, assuming that the unsaturated column had two kinds of flow paths, one of which easily flowed (saturated parts) and the other did not (unsaturated parts), this study combined the numerical solutions of two advection–diffusion equations and estimated the retardation coefficient for Cs ions in the column. The retardation coefficients were estimated to be smaller than those obtained in the conventional evaluation. To correct such differences, this study presented an approximate equation between the retardation coefficient and water saturation. Graphical abstract

Disposal tunnels in geological repositories are ventilated continuously for over 50 years until their closure. Under these conditions, an unsaturated zone of mixed liquid and gas phases forms around the tunnels. Moreover, drying is assumed to progress from the host rock to the tunnels. To understand these drying processes, this study investigated the migration and precipitation of solutes via capillary forces during drying in packed columns using silica sand or glass beads as packed layers and X-ray CT analysis. In addition, the apparent permeability of a column packed with silica sand containing precipitation was examined using a flow experiment. The results indicate that the precipitation and accumulation of solutes were significant near the drying surfaces of the columns. The apparent mass transfer coefficient at a relatively early stage of the drying process indicates that the migration rate of solutes depends strongly on the capillary forces during the drying process. Furthermore, the apparent permeability of the columns with precipitation decreased significantly. These indicate that the precipitation and accumulation of solutes with drying in the groundwater reduce the porosity and permeability, and the advection of groundwater around the repository may be suppressed.

The barrier effect of calcium silicate hydrate (C – S – H), which is secondarily formed around a repository owing to the utilization of cementitious materials, was explored. Eu was employed as a chemical analog of Am (a key radionuclide in high-level radioactive wastes), and its interaction with C – S – H was analyzed via synthesis experiments. For the experiments, calcium oxide, fumed silica, and a Eu solution were mixed to interact Eu with C – S – H that had not undergone drying. Fluorescence Raman spectroscopies were performed to analyze the coexistence of Eu with C – S – H. The results indicated that Eu was mostly undissolved in the liquid phase and that it was incorporated into the C – S – H structure rather than precipitated as its hydroxide species even at the pH conditions for Eu hydrolysis. Additionally, the C – S – H formation at 50°C, as well as its incorporation of Eu, were accelerated compared to 25°C. The findings indicated the possibility of immobilizing Eu and Am by C – S – H formed in the underground environment even under groundwater conditions in which Eu and Am form mobile colloids via the hydrolysis.

Abstract This study discussed the interaction between Eu and biotite in flakes under the coexistence of Na ions, considering saline groundwater. The sorption experiments were conducted by mixing an Eu solution with Na or K ions and biotite flakes at pH 5. Resultantly, the sorption of Eu gradually increased because of the diffusion into the layered structure of biotite flakes. Thereafter, the sorption amount of Eu with Na ions was less than that without Na ions, and Eu was hardly sorbed with K ions. Additionally, the apparent diffusion coefficients were estimated to be in the order of 10−13 m2/s based on a two-dimensional diffusion model. These values were lower than the effective diffusion coefficients in plutonic rock, which are employed to assess the performance of geological disposal systems. This indicates that the sorption of Eu in plutonic rock is restricted by the diffusion process in biotite flakes.

Abstract The sorption behavior of Cs to Mg-containing calcium silicate hydrate (C–S–H) was examined to consider C–S–H formation under the water-saturated conditions around a radioactive waste repository. The amount of Cs sorption was slightly lower for Mg-containing C–S–H than for C–S–H, because Mg leads to a decrease in sorption sites by facilitating the polymerization of silicate chains. However, the apparent sorption distribution coefficient Kd of Cs on C–S–H with a Ca/Si molar ratio of 0.8 and Mg contents up to 20% was estimated to be 3.4–6.1 mL/g. Furthermore, the amount of Cs sorption was not decreased by the presence of Ba. The apparent Kd obtained in this study was about 10 times higher than that conventionally estimated for host rocks in the plutonic repository, indicating that C–S–H retains the effect of Cs immobilization even when it contains Mg.

This study discussed the formation and stability of calcium-silicate-hydrate (C-S-H-gel) in the highly saline water. From the experimental results, the formation of C-S-H-gel was not affected by NaCl concentration with up to 600 mM. In addition, Raman spectrum analysis showed that the polymerization degree of silicate chain in the structure of C-S-H-gel was not remarkably affected by the concentration of NaCl. These mean that, even in the condition saturated with highly saline water, C-S-H-gel forms are stable.

Technical knowledge and information on the geological disposal of radioactive waste should be readily understandable for stakeholders who make decisions on implementation of the disposal so that those would be effectively contributory to the decision-making process. To realise reasonable understanding and decisions on the radioactive waste disposal project, it is suggested to be effective and necessary that producing knowledge and information is carried out interactively with crystallizing variable requirements and concerns from stakeholders, rather than by giving technical information in only one direction even if it can be provided in detail. In this study, a communication methodology of knowledge management on radioactive waste disposal based on analysis of a series of dialogue experiments with citizens and a case study of discussion by political experts on the geological disposal project of high-level radioactive waste and TRU waste in Japan is discussed. It seems reasonable to conclude that there is a common process of stepwise understanding, in which stakeholders need general knowledge and information on the concerned issue in the first step and then obtain more specific knowledge to make decision in the later steps. In the knowledge management concept, it is suggested that the key issues are how to correct and arrange knowledge and information, not only technical ones but also political, economical and so on, by applying the methodology of interactive accumulation of them between stakeholders.

Spatial redistribution of silicic acid occurs around a radioactive waste repository, due to dissolution and deposition with the change of pH. This study focused on the self-restoration of the confinement for radionuclides in the host rock caused by the redistribution of silicic acid, especially deposition behavior. The experimental results showed that the deposition rates of silicic acid are on the same order of magnitude under all conditions in this study, i.e., the conditions using amorphous silica and hydrothermally-altered minerals as the solid phase for the deposition of silicic acid and coexisting various multivalent cations in groundwater. Furthermore, the analysis based on the estimated deposition rates suggests that the deposition of silicic acid in the groundwater flow-field can retard the migration of nuclides because of narrowing flow-paths in the host rock.

A cement-based barrier that retards the leakage of nuclides from the underground disposal facility for radioactive waste in a saturated flow-field with groundwater was developed in this study. The experimental data showed that calcium silicate hydrate (hereinafter referred to as the CSH gels) forms as a secondary mineral under a highly alkaline and flow condition, due to the elution of calcium ions from the cement necessary for the construction of the repository and the dissolution of silicic acid from the groundwater flow-paths. Besides it was figured out that the CSH gels lead a confinement function against iodide and iodate ions which is ten times or more than that conventionally assigned, because of both the decrease in the permeability of groundwater associated with the formation of the CSH gels and the chemical reactions. Moreover, the addition of hydrotalcite (HT) as a fine aggregate of cement can further improve their confinement effect under a freshwater groundwater condition.

  7. Proposal of compact geological disposal system utilizing alteration control function of engineered barrier in unsaturated zone

This study examined the compactification of the geological disposal system by considering the alteration behavior of the engineered barrier in the unsaturated underground space area not filled with groundwater. As a result, although the unsaturated zone cannot suppress the supply of potassium that causes the illiteration (alteration) of the engineered barrier, it raises the temperature of the backfill area and promotes silica deposition due to cement utilization, improving the water barrier property. This makes it possible to improve the water barrier properties of the engineered barrier and to remove the conventional restriction condition of 100 degrees Celsius or less as the suppression temperature for illitization. Therefore, for example, two waste materials can be stacked to reduce the required area of the disposal site to half of the conventional one.

  8. Challenging research in self-contained buffer-barrier stabilized in long term by expression of improvement functions at different time scale

For the new concept of the buffer-barrier which exhibits the higher performance of nuclide confinement at different time scale, this study examined the deposition behavior of supersaturated silicic acid on clay minerals (bentonite) used for the geological disposal system, and estimated the clogging effect of flow-paths with the deposition of silicic acid. The results of deposition experiments showed that the deposition of supersaturated slicic acid on Na-type bentonite, Ca-type bentonite and amorphous silica significantly progressed under some conditions (pH, temperature, salt concentration) of the underground environment. In the estimation of the clogging effect considering the apparent deposition rate constants, the calculation results suggested that flow-paths and porous media for the migration of radionuclides around the repository will be sufficiently clogged by the deposition of silicic acid within 1,000 years assuming as the period guaranteed the performance of waste container.

  9. Development of nuclide confinement cement barrier undergoing a self-repair function under a condition saturated with groundwater

    Niibori Yuichi

In consideration of embedding radioactive waste in the subsurface where the liquid-solid ratio is small and saturated by groundwater, the confinement function of calcium silicate hydrate (hereinafter referred to as CSH) was examined by using mainly iodide ions. While CSH is the main component of cement, it is known that Ca gradually leaches due to alteration. However, even if the Ca/Si molar ratio 1.6 of ordinary cement decreases to 0.4, the results in this study showed that the CSH confines iodine undergoing a form dissolved in the hydration water. Furthermore, such a confinement function also appeared in the flow field of groundwater. This means that in a geological disposal system CSH itself repairs the barrier damaged by crustal deformation and so on.

  10. Compactification of geological disposal system based on dynamics of groundwater saturation processes

This study examined the groundwater saturation processes,in order to compact the geological disposal system, by using the micro-flow cell and the packed bed. Here, high alkaline groundwater due to cement utilization was also considered. As the result, the saturation processes depended on not the mass transfer rate of gas component from gas phase to liquid phase but the diffusion of dissolved gas in groundwater and/or the mixing of the groundwater itself. Besides, considering the permeability distribution due to residual gas, this study calculated the underground area required for the disposal of vitrified radioactive waste, by using a numerical model. The results suggested a compacted case 10% smaller than the area of the present design. Furthermore, the future issues were also discussed.
