Observation of the spatial distribution of cloud optical thickness (COT) is useful for the prediction and diagnosis of photovoltaic power generation. However, there is not a one-to-one relationship between transmitted radiance and COT (so-called COT ambiguity), and it is difficult to estimate COT because of three-dimensional (3D) radiative transfer effects. We propose a method to train a convolutional neural network (CNN) based on a 3D radiative transfer model, which enables the quick estimation of the slant-column COT (SCOT) distribution from the image of a ground-mounted radiometrically calibrated digital camera. The CNN retrieves the SCOT spatial distribution using spectral features and spatial contexts. An evaluation of the method using synthetic data shows a high accuracy with a mean absolute percentage error of 18% in the SCOT range of 1–100, greatly reducing the influence of the 3D radiative effect. As an initial analysis result, COT is estimated from a sky image taken by a digital camera, and a high correlation is shown with the effective COT estimated using a pyranometer. The discrepancy between the two is reasonable, considering the difference in the size of the field of view, the space–time averaging method, and the 3D radiative effect.

Abstract. Extensive observational and numerical investigations have been performed to better characterize cloud properties. However, due to the large variations in cloud spatiotemporal distributions and physical properties, quantitative depictions of clouds in different atmospheric reanalysis datasets are still highly uncertain. A radiance-based evaluation approach is introduced and performed to evaluate the quality of cloud properties from reanalysis datasets. The China Meteorological Administration reanalysis (CRA); the ECMWF fifth-generation reanalysis (ERA5); and the Modern-Era Retrospective analysis for Applications, Version 2 (MERRA-2), i.e., those reanalyses providing sufficient cloud information, are considered. To avoid the influence of assumptions and uncertainties on satellite retrieval algorithms, forward radiative transfer simulations are used as a bridge to translate the reanalyses to corresponding radiances that are expected to be observed by satellites. The simulated reflectances and brightness temperatures (BTs) are directly compared with observations from the Advanced Himawari Imager onboard the Himawari-8 satellite in the East Asia region. We find that the simulated reflectances and BTs based on CRA and ERA5 are close to each other. CRA represents the total and midlayer cloud cover better than the other two datasets, and ERA5 depicts deep-convection structures more closely than CRA does. Comparisons of the simulated and observed BT differences suggest that water clouds are generally overestimated in ERA5 and MERRA-2, and MERRA-2 also overestimates the ice clouds over cyclone centers. Overall, clouds from CRA, ERA5, and MERRA-2 show their own advantages in different aspects. The ERA5 reanalysis has the best capability to represent the cloudy atmospheres over East Asia, and the CRA representations are close to those in ERA5.

Abstract. An optimal estimation algorithm to retrieve the cloud optical depth (COD) and cloud particle effective radius (CER) from spectral zenith radiances observed by narrow field-of-view (FOV) ground-based sky radiometers was developed. To further address the filter degradation problem while analyzing long-term observation data, an on-site calibration procedure is proposed, which has good accuracy compared with the standard calibration transfer method. An error evaluation study conducted by assuming errors in observed transmittances and ancillary data for water vapor concentration and surface albedo suggests that the errors in input data affect retrieved CER more than COD. Except for some narrow domains that fall within a COD of &lt; 15, the retrieval errors are small for both COD and CER. The retrieved cloud properties reproduce the broadband radiances observed by a narrow FOV radiometer more precisely than broadband irradiances observed by a wide-FOV pyranometer, justifying the quality of the retrieved product (at least of COD) and indicating the important effect of the instrument FOV in cloud remote sensing. Furthermore, CODs (CERs) from sky radiometer and satellite observations show good (poor) agreement.

<p>&emsp; We developed an atmospheric gas absorption table for the Advanced Himawari Imager (AHI) based on the correlated k-distribution (CKD) method with the optimization method, which was used to determine quadrature weights and abscissas. We incorporated the table and band information of the AHI into a multi-purpose atmospheric radiative transfer package, Rstar. We updated the package so that users could easily specify the satellite and band number. Use of this update made it possible for the optimized CKD method to carry out calculations rapidly and accurately. Rstar is easy for beginners to use and facilitates comparison of results. Cloud retrieval tests using different numbers of quadrature points showed that cloud retrievals could be significantly affected by the accuracy of the CKD model.</p>

In this study, we developed a new ground-based remote sensing system for clouds to study the three dimensional radiative effect of heterogeneous clouds on the surface solar radiation. The remote sensing system is consists of a new whole sky camera and new retrieval techniques to retrieve the cloud optical depth distribution based on the three dimensional radiative transfer model. The intercomparison of the cloud optical depth during the intensive observation experiment showed that the cloud optical depth retrieved by our remote sensing system was consistent with those of the other ground- and satellite-based remote sensing methods. The three dimensional radiative effect was investigated by using the observation and simulation data. Newly, we showed that the illumination and shadowing effects of the cloud on the sun side and opposite side affect the spectral dependency of radiances, and the radiances become more colorful.

Three-dimensional atmospheric radiation models were developed on the basis of Monte Carlo method and explicit solution method. The three-dimensional radiation models were applied to the latest cloud-resolving meteorological simulation data. As a result, in the case of open cell cloud and closed cell cloud, differences in solar radiative heating rate at 1-6 K/hr were shown as a function of spatial grid sizes between 100m and 1km. On the other hand, domain-average of the solar radiative heating rate did not depend on spatial resolution, and there were no significant thermo-dynamical differences in domain-average values. Therefore, it is shown that cloud-radiation interaction at cloud-resolving scale might have different property depending on the spatial resolution.

In order to capture the spatial and temporal variations of the upper clouds, which play important roles in determining the radiation balance of the earth, we have developed methods to retrieve the upper cloud properties from the satellite data. Variations of cloud amount and optical and microphysical properties were investigated. In the tropics, distribution of the optically thick upper cloud is well associated with areas of high convective activity. The distribution of the cirrus cloud spreads to the higher latitudes than that of the convective cloud, and the cirrus cloud distribution also fluctuated corresponding to the seasonal cycle of the convective activity. The interannual variation of the upper cloud is closely related to the ENSO. In addition, we developed a cloud analysis algorithm using the Himawari-8 data, and it became possible to capture the temporal variation of clouds with frequent observation of the Himawari-8.

Three-dimensional atmospheric radiation model has been developed on the basis of the Monte Carlo method and the explicit solution method. The broad-band optical models such as cloud scattering and gaseous absorption have been also developed in order to apply the radiation model to the latest cloud-resolving meteorological simulation data. As a result, in the case of open cell clouds, the spatially-localized differences at a few hundred W/m2 in the solar radiation flux have been shown as a function of spatial grid size. On the other hand, the differences in heating rate of the solar radiation have not depended largely on the spatial grid size and have been locally several kelvins per day. The results indicate that the three-dimensional effect of solar radiation in the local air mass does not affect largely on the cloud evolution.

A relationship between micro and macro physical properties of cloud and heat flux at the sea surface was studied by using satellite observation data, ship-borne observation data, surface observation data, and numerical simulation with a cloud-resolving model. The results show that condensation process is dominant in the growth of cloud droplet over the area where heat flux at the sea surface is large, while collision process is important for the droplet growth in the other area. It was shown from the space-borne lidar and cloud-radar that overlapping clouds suppress the underlying low level cloud development.
