ABSTRACT We calculate polarized Raman intensity of diamond and zinc‐blende crystal structure for arbitrary surfaces in a backscattering geometry using both linearly and circularly polarized light. Rotated Raman tensors are applied to the phonon mode of diamond and the (LO/TO) phonon modes of zinc blende to evaluate how the Raman intensity evolves as the surface orientation is varied from (100) toward (110) and (111). Polar plots versus sample rotation angle or analyzer angle show distinct behaviors for parallel (VV) and cross (VH) configurations under linear polarization, as well as helicity‐dependent configuration. Helicity‐dependent Raman spectroscopy reveals surface‐dependent tilts of the polar pattern. We derive the analytical expressions for the Raman intensities and for the angular positions of maxima and minima as explicit functions of . These surface orientation‐sensitive signatures enable identification of unknown , including sample miscut, and allow predictive modeling of polar‐plot evolution, improving the precision of polarized Raman surface metrology.

Abstract In-plane optical properties of two-dimensional bismuth oxychalcogenides Bi2O2X (X = S, Se, and Te) are reported for a wide spectral range of 0.73–6.42 eV and at temperatures of 4.5–500 K by spectroscopic ellipsometry. At room temperature, Bi2O2S, Bi2O2Se, and Bi2O2Te exhibit an indirect band gap of 1.18 ± 0.02, 0.95 ± 0.01, and 0.60 ± 0.01 eV, respectively. As the temperature decreases, the indirect absorption edge of Bi2O2S undergoes a blueshift, while the indirect band gap of Bi2O2Se shows a redshift, and Bi2O2Te remains independent of temperature. The chalcogenide-dependent behavior as a function of temperature may be relevant to electron–phonon interactions in Bi2O2X materials. The observed pseudo-isotropic complex dielectric function and optical absorption coefficient by spectroscopic ellipsometry are directly compared with the first-principles calculations with a hybrid functional approach.

<title>ABSTRACT:</title>Thermoelectric (TE) materials, or materials that can generate an electrical energy from temperature gradient, are promising for renewable energy technology. One fundamental aspect in the TE research is the demand to maximize the TE power-factor, PF = S2 σ, by having as large Seebeck coefficient (S) and electrical conductivity (σ) as possible. In the early 90s, Hicks and Dresselhaus proposed the PF enhancement by using low-dimensional materials, in which electrons are confined in certain directions and they move freely in the other directions. This quantum effect is known as the confinement length (L) effect, in which L is the thickness or diameter of the two-dimensional (2D) or one-dimensional materials, respectively. However, a key challenge is to understand the critical value of L, at which the PF can be significantly enhanced. Recently, we reevaluated the confinement theory of the low-dimensional materials to solve this issue. We showed that electrons are fully confined only when L is smaller than an intrinsic length Λ, the so-called thermal de Broglie wavelength, which depends on the materials and can be experimentally measured. Monolayer 2D materials naturally satisfy the condition of L &lt; Λ since their confinement length is ∼ 1 nm, while their thermal de Broglie wavelength is ∼ 5-10 nm. Therefore, they could be a good candidate for TE materials. In this review article, we first review the TE materials with low dimensions. Then, we show the basic concept of the confinement effect and the consequence of such an effect. Finally, based on this effect, we turn our attention to the progress achieved recently in the TE properties of the 2D materials such as monolayer InSe, GaN electron gas, and SrTiO3 superlattices.
