Abstract We have developed a measurement system for soft X-ray ambient pressure photoelectron spectroscopy at BL08U of NanoTerasu. An excitation light of 800 eV was introduced by a vacuum tube terminated with a SiN window. Photoelectrons were detected through a ϕ24 μm aperture at the electron lens entrance of a differentially pumped analyzer. The Au 4f core-level spectra of a Au film were measured up to atmospheric pressure (1 bar) with He, to 1 bar with H2, and to 0.4 bar with N2. The system extends applications of operando experiments for the real functional materials.

Abstract Activation of the CH bond is the first step in converting methane into valuable chemicals. Herein, the successful induction and electrical detection of a methane oxidation reaction are reported at room temperature using IrO2 nanosheets, a 2D form of IrO2. A clear decrease in electrical resistance upon exposure to methane is observed by using atomically thin IrO2 nanosheet films. The resistance decrease disappears upon simultaneous exposure to oxygen, suggesting that methane is oxidized by consuming the lattice oxygen of the IrO2 nanosheets and that the oxygen vacancies generated are recovered by oxygen in the atmosphere. The resistance decrease is observed even at 300 K, indicating the high methane oxidation ability of the IrO2 nanosheets. These results are confirmed by a shift of the Ir 4f peaks in ambient pressure X‐ray photoelectron spectra. Furthermore, deposition of amorphous carbon, that is, methane oxidation products, on IrO2 nanosheets is also confirmed by Raman scattering spectroscopy after prolonged methane exposure at high temperatures in the absence of oxygen. This study demonstrates the ability of IrO2 nanosheets to oxidize methane at least down to 300 K and is an important example of the usefulness and simplicity of chemical reaction monitoring using electrical resistance changes.

<title>Abstract</title>An X-ray is the well-known probe to examine structure of materials, including our own bodies. The X-ray beam, especially at the wavelength of nanometers, has also become significant to directly investigate electronic states of a sample. Such an X-ray is called a soft X-ray and polarization dependence of the light-matter interaction further unveils the microscopic properties, such as orbitals or spins of electrons. Generation of high brilliant beams of the polarized X-ray has linked to development of our experimental science, and it has been made by radiation from relativistic electrons at the synchrotron radiation facilities over the world. Recently, we constructed a new polarization-controlled X-ray source, the segmented cross undulator, at SPring-8, the largest synchrotron radiation facility in the world. The operation is based on interference of X-ray beams, which is sharply contrast to the conventional method of regulating electron trajectory by the mechanical control of magnets. The paradigm shift opened the measurement innovations and allowed us to design new experimental approaches to capture signals that have been hidden in materials. The present review describes the novel X-ray source with the principle of operation and the technical details of optimization. Examples of the frontier spectroscopies that use unique optical properties of the source are introduced, followed by the future prospects for next generation synchrotron radiation facilities.

For today's silicon based devices, understanding the SiO2/Si(111) interface on atomic level is an important subject for fabricating superior devices. However, despite of many studies on the SiO2/Si(111) interface, the interfacial valence electronic states have been typically evaluated as the average and not as individual states. In the present study, we successfully observed valence electronic states of particular atoms at the SiO2/Si(111) interface for the first time using soft x-ray absorption and emission spectroscopy. In addition, comparing the experimental results to first-principles calculations revealed local interfacial properties. [DOI: 10.1380/ejssnt.2006.280]

Hydrogenation of carbon dioxide (CO2) on copper/zinc oxide-based catalysts was investigated using near-ambient pressure X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (AP-XPS). An initial hydrogenation step of CO2 to formate was studied using Zn-deposited single-crystal Cu surfaces. CO2 activation on the model catalysts leads to the formation of carbonates (CO3) on the surface in the presence of near-ambient pressure CO2 and hydrogen (H2). The addition of a small amount of water to the feed gas enhances the hydrogenation of CO2 into formate. This indicates that hydroxyl produced through dissociative adsorption of water is a source for the CO2 hydrogenation observed under the present reaction conditions. We also performed operando spectroscopy of an industrial catalyst for methanol synthesis at higher pressure to reveal the chemical states of the catalyst and adsorbed intermediates during the catalytic reaction. In-situ formation of active catalytic sites was detected by operando hard X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Analysis of the reaction products in the presence of CO2 and H2 gases shows the formation of methanol and CO. The rate of methanol synthesis correlates with the dynamic changes in the chemical states of the catalyst, and the reaction intermediates adsorbed on the catalyst.
