    Abstract Interhalogen compounds, such as bromine monochloride (BrCl), play an important role in aqueous Li-ion batteries. In this study, the interaction of BrCl with graphene nanoflakes (GRs) composed of single and double layers was investigated using the density functional theory (DFT) method. Both monomer and dimeric forms of BrCl were examined as interhalogen compounds. The binding energies of BrCl and (BrCl)2 with GRs were calculated to be 11.0 and 22.1 kcal mol−1, respectively. The diffusion barrier of BrCl on GRs was determined to be 1.9 kcal mol−1, which is significantly smaller than those of Li+ and Li on GRs (9.5 and 11.5 kcal mol−1, respectively). These results indicate that BrCl can easily diffuse across the GR surface, with its movement being faster than that of Li+ or Li. The electronic states of BrCl and (BrCl)2 on GRs, along with intercalation states, are discussed based on theoretical results.

    Abstract Functionalized fullerenes are known as high-performance molecules. Herein, the interaction of C60 fullerene with Phenyl-C61-butyric-acid-methyl-ester (PCBM) is investigated by means of density functional theory method to elucidate the structures and electronic states of C60-PCMB complexes. C60-PCBM blends are typically used in solar cell. Studying the electronic structure of C60-PCBM is important for elucidating the mechanism of solar cells. The intermolecular distances for C60 and PCBM dimers were calculated to be 3.70 and 2.34 Å, respectively. In C60 dimer, the five membered ring of C60 interacted with the six membered ring of neighbour C60. Two hydrogen bonds between side chains of PCBM are connected in the PCBM dimer. The binding energies were 1.4 kcal mol−1 (C60 dimer) and 2.6 kcal mol−1 (PCBM dimer). In the C60-PCBM complex, five different structures were found to be stable. The binding energies were distributed in the range 1.6–3.7 kcal mol−1. The electronic states and excitation energies of C60-PCBM complexes and the basis set superposition error were discussed on theoretical results.

    Objectives: The aim of this study was to assess the microtensile bond strength of three universal adhesives to dentin and enamel. Materials and Methods: Sixty extracted human third molar teeth were chosen and divided into six groups regarding the adhesive (G-Premio Bond, Clearfil S3 Bond or Single Bond) and tooth surface. All the applied bonding agents were universal adhesives. The teeth were polished and the adhesives were applied; then the teeth were restored with composite resin. The samples were mounted in acrylic resin and sectioned. The specimens were subjected to a universal testing machine and the microtensile bond strength was measured. The failure mode of each specimen was determined under a stereomicroscope. Data were analyzed using two-way ANOVA (α=0.05). Results: The microtensile bond strength of G-Premio Bond to enamel and dentin was 11.79±8.27 and 17.55±9.47 MPa, respectively which was not significantly different from the values in Single Bond group (15.59±10.66 and 17.19±10.09 MPa to enamel and dentin, respectively; P>0.05). However, the values for Clearfil S3 Bond were 7.11±4.23 and 7.88±8.83 MPa to enamel and dentin, respectively, which were significantly lower than the values for G-Premio Bond (P<0.05). Scanning electron microscopic (SEM) images showed that the adhesive failure was dominant in both enamel and dentin groups and in all adhesive systems. Conclusion: G-Premio Bond and Single Bond provided higher microtensile bond strength compared with Clearfil S3 Bond. Universal adhesives with their acceptable performance can be applied in self-etch mode on both enamel and dentin.

    The clinical performance of dental composite restoration and its overall success are the result of physical, mechanical, and biological properties of the filling materials. The present study aimed to evaluate surface roughness, flexural properties, and cytotoxicity of two nanohybrids, namely, MI Gracefil and Herculite Ultra, and one nanoceramic dental resin composite DiamondLite. The surface roughness was assessed in two different grinding conditions. Flexural properties were measured by, the three-point bending test and the specimens’ fractured surface was analyzed by scanning electron microscopy. Weibull analysis was performed on the flexural strength data to determine the composites’ reliability. The cytotoxicity test was conducted on MC3T3-E1 cells by the MTS assay. The results showed that grinding conditions had a significant effect on all nanocomposites' surface roughness ( p < .05). Herculite Ultra had a significantly higher flexural strength (125.8 MPa) and flexural modulus (9.8 GPa) as compared to other two nanocomposites ( p < .05). Further, cytotoxicity results indicated that DiamondLite had the lowest cell viability during the incubation period ( p < .05). The current study, therefore, concluded that the evaluated nanocomposites showed satisfactory surface roughness. Herculite Ultra flexural properties and Weibull modulus results make it a reliable choice for direct restorations. The cell viability results also showed that all three nanocomposites had moderate cytotoxicity, making them acceptable for direct application in the mouth.
