    <title>Abstract</title>Given the growing demand for environmentally friendly energy sources, thermoelectric energy conversion has attracted increased interest as a promising CO2-free technology. SnSe single crystals have attracted attention as a next generation thermoelectric material due to outstanding thermoelectric properties arising from ultralow thermal conductivity. For practical applications, on the other hand, polycrystalline SnSe should be also focused because the production cost and the flexibility for applications are important factors, which requires the systematic investigation of the stability of thermoelectric performance under a pseudo operating environment. Here, we report that the physical properties of SnSe crystals with nano to submicron scale are drastically modified by atmospheric annealing. We measured the Seebeck effect while changing the annealing time and found that the large positive thermopower, + 757 μV K−1, was completely suppressed by annealing for only a few minutes and was eventually inverted to be the large negative value, − 427 μV K−1. This result would further accelerate intensive studies on SnSe nanostructures, especially focusing on the realistic device structures and sealing technologies for energy harvesting applications.

    <title>Abstract</title>In strongly correlated systems the strength of Coulomb interactions between electrons, relative to their kinetic energy, plays a central role in determining their emergent quantum mechanical phases. We perform resonant x-ray scattering on Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+<italic>δ</italic>, a prototypical cuprate superconductor, to probe electronic correlations within the CuO2 plane. We discover a dynamic quasi-circular pattern in the <italic>x</italic>-<italic>y</italic> scattering plane with a radius that matches the wave vector magnitude of the well-known static charge order. Along with doping- and temperature-dependent measurements, our experiments reveal a picture of charge order competing with superconductivity where short-range domains along <italic>x</italic> and <italic>y</italic> can dynamically rotate into any other in-plane direction. This quasi-circular spectrum, a hallmark of Brazovskii-type fluctuations, has immediate consequences to our understanding of rotational and translational symmetry breaking in the cuprates. We discuss how the combination of short- and long-range Coulomb interactions results in an effective non-monotonic potential that may determine the quasi-circular pattern.

    <p> It is essential to develop an inspection method capable of diagnosis for corrosion of reinforcing steel inside the concrete structure since the aging of reinforced concrete (RC) structures is in progress. However, in the conventional methods, it is necessary to partially destroy the existing structure to measure the corrosion rate of the reinforcing steel. In this work, to develop a non-destructive method to measure the corrosion rate of the steel inside the existing structure using a four-probe AC impedance method, the impedance is measured for mortar and concrete specimens. Also, current dispersion analysis clears the change of the measurement value depending on the probe distance and the rebar depth.</p><p> As a result, we succeeded in proposing a condition capable of applying the method and an index capable of converting into a corrosion rate under the condition. It is shown that we can set a measurement condition according to a targeted concrete structure and evaluate the corrosion rate of the reinforcing steel using the non-destructive method.</p>

    The electric double layer gating technique using ionic liquids which allows to increase the capability of usual field effect doping by two order of magnitude opens a new avenue not only to novel physics of solid-state materials but also to potential applications for dissipationless devices. Here we report high-performance organic field-effect transistors with ionic-liquids electrolytes. With high carrier mobility of 12.6 cm2/Vs in the rubrene crystal that is order of magnitude larger than amorphous silicon devices, pronounced current amplification is achieved at the gate voltage of only 0.2 V, which is two orders of magnitude smaller than that necessary for organic thin-film transistors with dielectric gate insulators. The results demonstrate that the ionic-liquid/organic semiconductor interfaces are suited to realize low-power and fast-switching field-effect transistors without sacrificing carrier mobility in forming the solid/liquid interfaces.

    Organic transistor characteristics of single-crystal phase pentacene were demonstrated. Ionic liquids (ILs) were used as a crystallization solvent in vacuum deposition of pentacene crystals. The crystal sizes were as large as 200 μm and their surface exhibits a molecularly step-and-terrace structure. IL also was used as a gate dielectric material in the organic transistors, as the result, the highest field-effect mobility exceeded 5 cm^2/Vs.

    &lt;p&gt;ルブレン単結晶は異方的で非常に高い正孔移動度を持つころから、有機半導体のベンチマーク材料として盛んに研究されている。この高い移動度の起源がバンド伝導であるとの報告がある一方、ホッピング伝導やポーラロン伝導でも高い移動度を説明できるとの報告がある。本講演では、電荷の伝導機構を解明することを目的とし行った、角度分解光電子分光法による高品質ルブレン単結晶の電子構造の測定結果に関して報告する。&lt;/p&gt;

    本研究では、申請者が考案した新規蓄電固体材料である電気二重層エレクトレットおよび電気二重層界面を利用して、材料に電気二重層エレクトレットを貼り付けるだけで接合した材料の界面の電子状態を大幅に変化させる手法を開拓と、その背景に眠るサイエンスの理解と応用展開を進めて行った。 イオン液体の電気二重層を用いた電界効果を用いた電子状態制御は、材料によっては、イオン液体と電気化学反応を起こしてしまい、静電的な電界効果による効果か、電気化学反応による効果か区別することが困難であった。 本年度は、イオン液体による材料の電気化学反応を防ぐために、酸化物薄膜を保護層として材料の上にのせ、その効果を検証した。具体的には、磁性材料CoFeBの上に 強誘電体であるHfOを保護層として成膜し、イオン液体による電界効果により、CoFeBの電子状態制御を行なった。その結果、電気二重層の形成に伴って、HfO中の酸素の移動が起き、CoFeBの酸化還元が電圧によって制御できることが明らかになった。また、CoFeBの酸化還元反応により垂直磁化と面内磁化が制御できることが明らかになった。

    This study proposed a non-destructive and short-time measurement methodology for the corrosive state of reinforcing concrete. First, we proposed a spatial magnetic field mapping method to narrow down the corroded parts of the reinforcing bars. The proposed method is applied to a real structure with embedded reinforcing bars. As a result, it was clarified that the state of reinforcement inside the concrete wall can be identified. Next, four terminal alternating current impedance method (four terminal method) was proposed, which focused on impedance characteristics changing in the corrosion state of reinforced concrete. The proposed method is applied to reinforced concrete specimens. As result, it was clarified that the corrosion rate of internal reinforcing bars can be quantitatively evaluated in a completely non-destructive manner. Finally, we clarified the issues for practical applications of the proposed methodology.

    The purpose of this study is to create innovative thermomagnetic functions such as giant thermoelectric effect in solid metallic materials. We have attempted to control the electric field of the thermomagnetic effect in single-crystal thin film crystals, and demonstrated that the anomalous Nernst effect can be controlled by voltage. In addition, we found that the anomalous Nernst effect is highly anisotropic in Fe4N ferromagnetic thin films. Furthermore, a large enhancement of the anomalous Nernst angle was observed in the granular structure, indicating that this structure is effective for enhancing the thermal magnetic effect. These results provide a comprehensive understanding of the physics and theories of nanoscale spin caloritronics, creating unprecedented functions and paving the way for device applications.

    I proposed the introduction of a self-assembled monolayer on the interface in order to improve the reliability of the low driving voltage electric double layer transistor (EDLT) using IGZO and IL. From the measurement of the electrical reliability of EDLT introduced with this interface layer, it has become clear that the degradation in long-term driving is suppressed. The degradation phenomenon suppressed by this FDTS is considered to be due to the decrease of In and increase of the relative amount of Zn in IGZO semiconductor layer. Therefore, although the carrier density of IGZO changes with IL, this can be suppressed by the interface layer.

    Improving a magnetic storage technique is crucial for the coming information explosion era. In particular, an efficient manipulation of magnetization is the key to further reduce energy consumption of magnetic storage devices. In this research project, we have mainly focused on improving the way of an electric-field-induced magnetization manipulation and understanding its fundamental mechanism. Various experiments have unveiled the underlying mechanism of the electric field effect on magnetism in ferromagnetic and non-magnetic metals. Using the knowledge from these experiments, we have demonstrated the efficient electric-field-induced magnetization switching and the electrical information writing in a magnetic race track memory. As well as using an electric field, we have investigated other ways for manipulating magnetization and opened up an novel application of magnetic nano-films in addition to the magnetic storage application.

    Light-emitting electrochemical cells (LEC) using ionic liquid are of interest for a new generation light source with high efficiency. We have observed the behavior of the ion distribution in LECs under operation using scanning transmission X-ray microscopy. We found that the operating current actually drives the ion movement, however, observed anion distribution was not fully described by a simple mechanism of self-organized p-n junction. Moreover, heterogeneic ion/polymer distribution due to the phase separation was found in the degraded cells.

    Electric field control of materials properties is one of the longstanding issues in solid-state science. With this technique one can observe disorder-free phenomena upon carrier doping and find novel electric states that are impossible to generate in a chemical way, In this project, we are going to employ an electrochemical concept to control materials properties with an electric field, i.e. electric double layer gating. In this project we have achieved that 1) understanding science of this electrolyte gating 2) developing new type of energy harvester using electric double layer.

    The electronic structures and physical properties of low-dimensional nano-structures formed on solid surface have been investigated both experimentally and theoretically. The addition of valley degree of freedom by controlling the symmetry of the nano-structures, leads to the observation of extraordinary Rashba effect, such as non-vortical valley spin structure and 100 % spin polarized metallic valley structure. These effects, which are concluded to result from the lack of either the rotational symmetry or the mirror symmetry, suppress the backscattering probability of electron spins and thus open a great avenue to realize semiconductor spintronics devices. We also succeeded to form a two-dimensional honeycomb network with cyclic thiazyl biradical molecules, and showed this honeycomb network to have Dirac fermion and thus to behave like a molecular graphene.

    The purpose of this research project is to develop spintronic devices utilizing organic semiconductor single crystals basically consisting of carbon which is an ubiquitous element. We used a micro spin-pumping method as a technique to inject spins into organic semiconductors and nonmagnetic metals, and the injection, the transport and the detection of spins were examined experimentally. We successfully controlled the magnetization dynamics in the microfabricated magnetic element, and injected spins into the Cu nanowire due to the micro spin-pumping. We also observed the change in the spin accumulation in Cu by attaching the Pt wire with Cu. In addition, we fabricated the device with the junction of Rubrene single crystal and ferromagnetic electrode, and evaluated the magnetization dynamics under the gate voltage application.

    Spintronics, which utilize electron and charges, attract much attentions which enable us to operate semiconductor-based electronics with low-energy consumption. In this project we tried to develop spintronic devices made by organic semiconductors. The way to inject spins into organic semiconductors are as follows: 1) Spin pumping-induced spin injection into organic semiconductors, 2) Light-emitting diode structure with ferromagnetic contacts. We observed that there are signatures of spins which is induced to organic semiconductors.

    本研究の根本にある狙いは、電気的に材料の機能開拓を可能にする手段-電界効果-を、材料の枠を超えて活用し、省エネ・高効率な利用展開・材料間の融合的新機能の創発を図るものである。本研究では、中でも磁性体に注目し、特に、身近な金属の磁性を電界効果で自在に操る手法を確立し、その背景に眠るサイエンスの理解と応用展開を目指すことを目的としていた。具体的には、①電界効果により金属元素の電子数を変化させ、磁性が変化するメカニズムを理解すること、②天然には磁石として存在しない金属を電気的に磁石にすること、③磁場や電流に頼らない次世代の電気的磁気記録手法を探索・実証することを目指し、研究を進めた。基盤研究(S)の採択により、本研究が廃止となったため、実際の研究期間は5ヶ月程度であったが、下記の2つの内容について具体的な進展があった。 ●コバルト超薄膜に電界を印加し、その磁気異方性の変化を温度の関数として系統的に測定した。キュリー温度が変化するメカニズムと磁気異方性が変化するメカニズムの関連性を知る上で理解が進んだ。これは上記の①に貢献する結果であると考えている。 ●電界を加えることで、磁壁が移動するスピードを大幅に変えられることをこれまでに報告していたが、間接的な測定で磁壁移動スピードを求めなければならなかった。今回、透明な電極を用いることで、光学的に直接電界印加直下の磁壁移動を観測することに成功し、また磁壁の移動スピードを電界により100倍変えられることも分かった。これは上記の③に貢献する結果であると考えている。 上記に加え、招待講演1件を行った。今後、基盤研究(S)にて②を中心とした展開を精力的に進めていくつもりである。

    Electric field control of materials properties is one of the longstanding issues in solid-state science. With this technique one can observe disorder-free phenomena upon carrier doping and find novel electronic states that are impossible to generate in a chemical way. In this project, we are going to employ an electrochemical concept to control materials properties with an electric field. The purpose of this project is to explore this new window of extreme charge doping that has never been reached so far by field effect, to search for and control novel states of matter in well chosen materials. We have achieved : (1) observation of electric field induced metal-to-insulator transition in variety of materials such as intrinsic semiconductors: VO2, and SrTiO3, (2) observation of electric field control over magnetic ordering and phase transitions in Co, (3) development of new light-emitting diodes with EDL gating technique.

    Using an electronic device to control phase transitions is not only exciting from fundamental view points, but also offers potential applications for sensors, signal converters and memories. We have performed high-density carrier doping by ionic liquid electrolytes used for gate dielectric layers and succeed to make not only high performance organic field-effect transistors but also demonstrate electric-field control of metal-insulator transition in transition metal oxide thin films.

    It is recognized that some sort of electron self-organization occurs in high-Tc cuprate superconductors due to strong electron correlations. Also, it seems likely that in cuprates the electron self-organization phenomena lie behind their peculiar electronic states such as unusual insulating normal state under high magnetic fields or intrinsic inhomogeneity of the superconducting gap. This project has clarified various aspects of the electron self-organization phenomena in cuprates through experiments using high-quality single crystals, in particular their transport properties measurements under extreme conditions. Principal results are the following: 1. We discovered the existence of "magic doping fractions" for charge ordering in La_2-X_Sr_xCuO_4, and showed that a checkerboard model consistently explains the observed fractions. 2. Extensive measurements of ultra-low-temperature thermal conductivity of YBa_2Cu_3O_y, La_2-x_Sr-xCuO_4, and Bi_2Sr_2CaCu_xO_<8+δ> revealed a breakdown of the "universal thermal conductivity", which is generically expected for d-wave BCS superconductors. This breakdown is apparently related to the peculiar superconducting gap inhomogeneity in cuprates. 3. Through the ultra-low-temperature measurements of transport properties of nonsuperconducting YBa_2Cu_3O_y, where a self-organized resistivity anisotropy is known to exist, we elucidated that the electron self-organized state is inherently insulating when it is nonsuperconducting. Moreover, we found that this insulating state is characterized by the peculiar log(1/T) resistivity divergence. 4. We elucidated that the charge transfer energy in the CuO_2 plane can be obtained from the temperature dependence of the Hall coefficient measured up to 1000 K. Furthermore, we showed that the Hall coefficient data can be used for disentangling the phase-separated nature of La_2-x_Sr_xCuO_4 in the superconducting doping regime.
