    Continuous carbon fiber–reinforced composites (CCFRCs) produced by 3D printing offer design flexibility but often exhibit reduced mechanical performance due to process-induced defects. This study examines the effect of the printing process on the tensile strength of a CCFRC with polyamide 6 as the matrix using both numerical and experimental techniques. The experiment comprises two phases: 3D printing and tensile testing. The first phase is further divided into three stages, referred to as before (Stage 1), during (Stage 2), and after printing (Stage 3), with samples collected at each stage for tensile testing and analysis. Microscopic structure analysis was conducted using powerful X-ray imaging at the synchrotron radiation facility “NanoTerasu,” revealing the effects of the printing process. Based on these observations, simulations are performed using a spring element model (SEM) that incorporates process-induced initial fiber breakage and voids. For Stages 1 and 2, the simulation predicts the strength with high accuracy; however, for Stage 3, a 20% overestimation is observed. This result suggests that Stage 3 may introduce changes in the probabilistic strength distribution of the fibers and may cause degradation of the fiber/resin interface due to the presence of voids, which cannot be modeled using the current numerical approach, leading to a further reduction in the tensile strength. The findings of this study contribute to elucidating the degradation mechanisms of tensile strength induced by the 3D printing process in CCFRCs.

    ABSTRACT This study investigates phase‐separated cellulose filler/poly(lactic acid) (PLA)/elastomer ternary composites to enhance the mechanical performance of bioplastics. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) reveals morphological transitions from sea–island to co‐continuous structures depending on the elastomer type and content. Two‐dimensional fast Fourier transform (FFT) analysis quantifies these morphologies by extracting radial and angular spectral features. A gradient‐based texture‐synthesis framework using Adam optimization reconstructs statistically equivalent microstructures that match the FFT‐derived spectra. These synthetic microstructures serve as models for finite‐element analysis (FEA) of the three‐phase composite system. The FEA results show that high hydrostatic stress near rigid cellulose fillers causes brittle failure in PLA, while elastomer domains mitigate stress concentration and induce localized plastic deformation, leading to ductile behavior. In situ micro‐computed tomography observations confirm these fracture mechanisms, displaying behavior consistent with simulation predictions. This work demonstrates that integrating FFT‐based morphological quantification with synthetic structure generation enables predictive, microstructure‐informed mechanical analysis of complex composite systems. The proposed approach provides a powerful framework for designing sustainable, high‐performance biocomposites through virtual testing and structure–property correlation.

    This study experimentally and numerically investigated the effect of stacking sequences on the open-hole compressive (OHC) and tensile (OHT) strength and failure mechanisms in carbon-fiber-reinforced thermoplastic (CFRTP) laminates. Specimens with stacking sequences containing a higher proportion of 0° layers and those with more ±45° layers were considered, denoted as “hard” and “soft” specimens, respectively. Strength prediction simulations for CFRTP were conducted using the three-dimensional extended finite element method, previously validated for carbon-fiber-reinforced thermosets (CFRTS). In the OHC test, kink-bands formed before matrix-dominated damage occurred for both hard and soft CFRTP specimens, while the opposite was found for CFRTS specimens due to the higher matrix toughness of CFRTP. Consequently, in soft CFRTP specimens, stress redistribution to the ±45° layers after kink-band formation led to gradual damage progression, achieving a strength comparable to CFRTS despite the higher 0°-layer compressive strength in CFRTS. The OHC simulation effectively predicted CFRTP failure using the maximum stress criterion. In the OHT test, CFRTP exhibited a higher strength than CFRTS in both hard and soft specimens due to the higher 0°-layer tensile strength in CFRTP. The OHT simulation accurately predicted abrupt failure in hard CFRTP specimens using the Weibull failure criterion but underestimated the strength of soft CFRTP specimens. This discrepancy arose because CFRTP exhibited less matrix-dominated damage, allowing stress redistribution to the ±45° layers after fiber breakage, leading to gradual damage progression. X-ray micro-computed-tomography observations confirmed that dispersed fiber breakages progressively connected through splitting cracks and propagated perpendicular to the fibers.

    Fiber-reinforced composites are essential in the aerospace industry, highlighting the need for an in-depth understanding of their durability. This study introduces a novel approach that integrates viscoelasticity and damage evolution based on continuum damage mechanics, employing finite element analysis. The method utilizes an anisotropic viscoelastic constitutive law to examine creep behavior under constant stress, decomposing stresses into equilibrium and non-equilibrium components. Moreover, it integrates a transverse crack damage variable associated with crack density. After solving stiffness equations, a detailed analysis of transverse crack propagation is conducted. This technique was applied to creep tests on carbon fiber-reinforced plastics and 3D woven ceramic matrix composites, resulting in strain and crack density profiles. The numerical simulations successfully reproduced experimental outcomes. The developed method offers a comprehensive tool for analyzing transverse crack propagation under viscoelastic creep conditions through finite element analysis, significantly enhancing design considerations by incorporating aspects of long-term durability.

    Abstract The mechanisms underlying the influence of the surface chemistry of inorganic materials on polymer structures and fracture behaviours near adhesive interfaces are not fully understood. This study demonstrates the first clear and direct evidence that molecular surface segregation and cross-linking of epoxy resin are driven by intermolecular forces at the inorganic surfaces alone, which can be linked directly to adhesive failure mechanisms. We prepare adhesive interfaces between epoxy resin and silicon substrates with varying surface chemistries (OH and H terminations) with a smoothness below 1 nm, which have different adhesive strengths by ~13 %. The epoxy resins within sub-nanometre distance from the surfaces with different chemistries exhibit distinct amine-to-epoxy ratios, cross-linked network structures, and adhesion energies. The OH- and H-terminated interfaces exhibit cohesive failure and interfacial delamination, respectively. The substrate surface chemistry impacts the cross-linked structures of the epoxy resins within several nanometres of the interfaces and the adsorption structures of molecules at the interfaces, which result in different fracture behaviours and adhesive strengths.

    Abstract We developed an in-situ shear test system suitable for transmission electron microscopy (TEM) observations, which enabled us to examine the shear deformation behaviours inside soft materials at nanoscale resolutions. This study was conducted on a nanoparticle-filled rubber to investigate its nanoscale deformation behaviour under a large shear strain. First, the shear deformation process of a large area in the specimen was accurately examined and proven to exhibit an almost perfect simple shear. At the nanoscale, voids grew along the maximum principal strain during shear deformation. In addition, the nanoscale regions with rubber and silica aggregates exhibited deformation behaviours similar to the global shear deformation of the specimen. Although the silica aggregates exhibited displacement along the shearing directions, rotational motions were also observed owing to the torque generated by the local shear stress. This in-situ shear deformation system for TEM enabled us to understand the nanoscale origins of the mechanical properties of soft materials, particularly polymer composites. Graphical Abstract

    © 2019 Elsevier Ltd We investigated the characteristics of thermal energy transport over two solid surfaces joined via an extremely thin liquid film where the liquid molecules are under the influence of both solid surfaces simultaneously. Using non-equilibrium molecular dynamics simulations, the thermal resistance between the two solid surfaces was examined for different thickness of liquid film and different alignment (in-plane orientation) of the two solid surfaces. Both solid surfaces were the (1 1 0) plane of face centered cubic lattice, and two different combinations of alignment, i.e., either parallel or crossed to each other, were examined. The thermal resistance between the solid surfaces was decomposed into the thermal boundary resistance at the solid-liquid interfaces and the thermal resistance of the liquid film, which were analyzed separately. The results showed that when the liquid film thickness is equal or less to four molecular dimensions, both the film thickness and the surface alignment have significant influence on the thermal resistance. Specifically, when the liquid film is a single layer of liquid molecules (LLM), the thermal resistance between solid surfaces is extremely low when compared with the cases of more LLM, and increases with increasing liquid density. In contrast, when the film is composed of two or three LLM, the solid-liquid interfacial thermal resistance decreases with increasing liquid density, and a discontinuous increase occurs as the number of LLM changes from two to three. As for the effect of surface alignment, it was found that the parallel surface alignment gives a lower thermal resistance than the crossed surface alignment.

Using molecular dynamics simulation, we investigated the mechanism by which the intercalation of a surfactant solution reduces the contact thermal resistance of two solid surfaces. We constructed a model system where two solid surfaces with a gap were immersed in a surfactant solution, and the gap was filled with permeating molecules to form a molecular thin film. By varying the concentration of the surfactant and the distance between the confining surfaces, factors affecting the intersolid heat transfer were explored. It was demonstrated that the overall thermal resistance of the present system was determined by interfacial thermal resistance between the solid and the solution and can be reduced by increasing the surfactant concentration. The surface separation, i.e., the distance between the two solid surfaces, had a significant impact on interfacial thermal resistance, whether or not surfactant molecules were involved. Interfacial thermal resistance was an oscillatory function of the surface separation and displayed minimum values not at the most adsorption amount of liquid molecules but when the density profile of liquid molecules showed a sharp peak, i.e., when the surface separation was commensurable with the size of the solvent molecule. This tendency was most remarkably seen when the liquid film was composed of a single molecular layer. The findings in this study provide helpful insights into the reduction of interfacial thermal resistance utilizing surfactant solutions.

    © 2019 Elsevier Ltd Molecular dynamics (MD) simulation is a powerful tool for investigating the molecular mechanism of heat conduction in polymers. However, existing MD studies are mostly on monodisperse polymers and the effect of polydispersity, which typically occurs in commercial polymers, remains to be clarified. In this work, various types of polydisperse polyethylenimine (PEI) composed of molecules having different molecular weights and branching structures were constructed by in silico step-growth polymerization. The effect of the polydispersity and molecular structure on heat conduction in PEI was investigated using all-atom MD simulations. The number and weight fraction distributions of the polydisperse purely-linear PEI agreed well with the Flory-Schulz distributions, and therefore it can be concluded that the in silico polymerization used in this work reasonably mimics the step-growth-like polymerization observed in the actual synthesis of PEI. Thermal conductivity increased with increase in the radius of gyration dependent on the degree of branching of the molecules. In addition, thermal conductivity of a polydisperse PEI exhibited a similar value to that of a monodisperse PEI of a representative polymer chain in the polydisperse system. By analyzing in detail the thermal energy transfer among and inside molecules, their microscopic mechanisms could be understood and it was discovered that the average molecular weight is a critical factor in determining heat conduction.

    © 2019 The Authors Molecular dynamics simulations of a liquid layer between solid surfaces under a temperature gradient were performed to investigate the mechanism by which solid-liquid interfacial heat transfer is affected by adsorption of surfactant on solid surfaces with various concentrations of surfactant. The surfactant and solvent were chosen to be single-atom molecules with a contact angle of 0 and 180 degrees to the solid surface, respectively. Density distributions showed that the surfactant molecules formed a layer on the solid surface. The heat flux across the solid-liquid interface and between two adsorption layers closest to the surface was decomposed into energy transport terms based on molecular motions and inter-molecular interactions to examine the molecular mechanism of heat transfer. The interfacial thermal conductance (ITC) was also evaluated, and the molecular mechanism contributing to it was analyzed. It was found that the surfactant molecules that were adsorbed onto the solid surface decreased the interfacial thermal resistance, causing an increase in the heat flux, where the heat path from the solid to the solvent molecules via surfactant molecules became dominant as compared with the direct path from the solid to solvent molecules. It resulted in the temperature of surfactant being closer to the temperature of the solid than that of solvent in the vicinity of the solid surfaces. This indicated that in order to increase heat transfer via surfactants, not only the surfactant affinity with solid surface, but also the surfactant-solvent affinity must be considered. The contribution of each surfactant molecule to the ITC was greater than that of each solvent molecule, and both were proportional to their intermolecular potential with the solid atoms. Also, the contributions of a single surfactant and solvent molecule to the ITC were independent of their concentrations in the adsorption layer.

    本年度は量子化学計算（QM）・分子動力学法（MD）・散逸粒子動力学法（DPD）を連携した，エポキシ樹脂の反応硬化シミュレーションスキームを開発した．従来のQM/MD連携による反応硬化シミュレーションは数百コアの大規模計算機を用いて数十時間要していた．本研究では粗視化手法であるDPDをMDの代わりに用いることで，計算負荷を大幅に低減し，数コアの計算規模で数百秒で計算が完了する．これにより従来のMDによる反応硬化シミュレーションに比べて計算資源・計算時間ともに大幅なコストカットが可能となり，架橋構造の不均一性のようなメゾスケール構造特性を再現するのに必要な大規模系での反応硬化シミュレーションが可能となった． さらにDPDで得られた粗視化系をMDの全原子系へと復元するリバースマッピング手法も開発し，MDによる精緻な物性評価が可能となった．これによって比較的時間を要する反応計算をDPDで高速に行い，精緻な解析が必要な物性評価を全原子MDで行うという，効率的な解析スキームが完成し，多くの樹脂候補から最適樹脂をスクリーニングする場合に非常に有用なツールになり得る．計算から得られた密度・ヤング率・ポアソン比・線膨張係数・ガラス転移点等の熱機械物性およびXRDパターンなどの原子スケールの構造特性は実験結果とよく一致しており，ツールの妥当性が確認できた．これら成果はSoft Matterで公刊されており，カバー論文にも選ばれた．

    本年度は前年度に行った球形粒子をランダムに重なりを許して配置し模擬された多孔質体とは内部構造が異なる多孔質体に対しても提案した理論式が適用可能であるかを検証した。そこで粒子の重なりを許さない粒子充填層を作成し、粒子充填層内の圧力勾配により誘起される気体流れのDSMCシミュレーションを行い，得られた流量と理論式により見積もられた流量の比較を行った。その結果，多孔質体の内部構造に対応する迷路度を採用することにより理論式が良い見積りを与えることを明らかにした。 理論式を用いて適切に流量を見積もるためには、多孔質体の内部構造に対応する迷路度を採用することが重要であり、そのためには迷路度の物理的意味を明らかにすることが必要である。そこで多孔質体の迷路度の物理的意味を分子運動の観点から分析した。前年度提案した理論式では、多孔質体の迷路度は多孔質体の直線距離と多孔質体内部の曲がりくねった流路の長さの比の自乗で定義されている。しかし，高クヌッセン数領域においては，気体分子の移動経路は流線すなわち流管に沿わないため，多孔質体内の流路長さの意味合いが不明瞭である。そこで，まっすぐな円管の中のクヌッセン拡散による分子の挙動と多孔質体内におけるクヌッセン拡散による分子の挙動の比較分析を行った。その結果、円管と多孔質体のそれぞれにおいて一定の直線距離移動するために分子が描く全行程の長さの比が多孔質体内流路の迷路度を表すことを明らかにした。これは多孔質体の内部構造に対応した迷路度を決定する際に重要な知見であり、提案した理論式を完成させるための重要な知見である。
