Profile

Hiroki Takakura is a Professor of Social Anthropology, Tohoku University, Japan. He affiliates to both the Center for Northeast Asian Studies and the Graduate School of Environmental Studies. His main concern is human ecological adaptation and the indigenous knowledge in the Arctic, in particular, in Siberia. After the Great East Japan Earthquake, he started the disaster research and visual anthropology. He is the author of Arctic Pastoralist Sakha: Ethnography of Evolution and Microadaptation in Siberia (Melbourne: Trans Pacific Press, 2015), the coedited the book Global Warming and Human-Nature Dimension in Northern Eurasia (Springer, 2018); and the co-atuhored the book World Anthropologies in Practice (Bloomsbury, 2016), Crisis and Disaster in Japan and New Zealand (Palgrave Macmillan, 2019).

<sec><title content-type="abstract-subheading">Purpose</title>This study examines fisheries affected by the Great East Japan Earthquake and Tsunami in 2011 to explore how the collectivism appears during the recovery process. </sec><sec><title content-type="abstract-subheading">Design/methodology/approach</title>The author questions the context of collaboration after the disaster among independent small-scale fishers in Miyagi by conducting semistructured interviews with more than 50 local fishers with anthropological observations of boat fishing operations and using local documents and statistics. </sec><sec><title content-type="abstract-subheading">Findings</title>The corresponding collaboration among the fishers after the disaster is not a mere “disaster utopia,” but is embedded in the socioecological context of fishing. Fishers have developed individual and group fishing. They have institutionalized competitive distribution for sedentary fish with low resource fluctuation, while outcome-equal distribution is adopted for migratory fish with high resource fluctuation. This forms a fishing continuum that connects competitive individualism with collectivism in the community, which has contributed to resilience for disaster recovery. </sec><sec><title content-type="abstract-subheading">Originality/value</title>The balance between individualism and collectivism is decisively coordinated in socioecological contexts. The multifaceted resource strategy for maritime biodiversity that features family-based occupational differentiation in a community is crucial for disaster recovery of small-scale fishers. </sec>

This paper explores the value of visual records from natural disasters in assisting reconstruction, including photography, single-shot videos, and documentary movies. It considers three types of visual records related to the Great East Japan Earthquake: 1) raw data, 2) edited educational videos, and 3) commercial documentary films. It also considers the nature of disaster records and their repository medium, including digital data archives, public educational websites, and commercial networks. Furthermore, the authors consider the overlaps between these categories. Raw video records certainly meet the needs of either digital archives or documentary movies. However, commercial documentary movies form a category of their own, as copyright and scripts constrain their exploitation and manipulation. In conclusion, this paper identifies the merit of each type of visual record and argues that both are necessary for the social remembering of disasters and to help reconstruct communities affected by such events.

Global warming will likely transform Siberian environments. Future precipitation increase is projected in eastern Siberia. Early evidence also indicates that water cycles are undergoing rapid change, with grave impacts on seasonality of freezing-thawing of surface water bodies. Subsequently, permafrost-forest degradations and waterlogging has been detected in the region. Human inhabitants, who have adapted to great changes in social structure and environment in the past, will be forced to adapt again, but to a cascading series of environmental changes. In this presentation, we clarify whether high precipitation occurred in the past in the Lena river basin, and reveal recent changes in atmospheric- and terrestrial- water cycles using archived precipitation data as well as an atmospheric re-analysis data. Finally, we recommend adaptation strategies to the recent changes of the water cycles in the region.<br>

Introduction: Health professionals and support staff need to be prepared for disasters and know how to respond. This study aimed to examine a one-day “Conductor-type disaster healthcare management personnel” training course and its effect among healthcare professionals. Tohoku University and Fukushima Medical University are experienced in disaster response preparedness and they conducted the one-day course comprising multiple sessions at the World Bosai Forum-2019 (WBF-2019). Method: The course introduced the recent activities of four groups: the Practical Disaster Risk Reduction Research Group; the Natural Science Research Group; the Disaster Humanities Research Group; and the Disaster Medicine Research Group. Unifying four scientific areas based on the theory of the disaster cycle, the research field “disaster science” has been created through interdisciplinary cooperation. The participants completed reports, which were then analyzed using the KJ method. Discussion: The program participants wanted to gain practical knowledge about disasters and have a multifaceted perspective on disaster response. Participants who attended other sessions had an interest in comparing their training with the training provided by other sessions on disaster preparedness. Comparisons included determining the effectiveness of high-level disaster medical preparations from a multilateral viewpoint and involving an interdisciplinary research team in disaster medical preparations to prepare for future disaster events. Conclusion: The participants identified that interdisciplinary activities lead to an improvement in knowledge, skills, or attitudes toward disaster preparedness. There needs to be a greater focus on disaster medicine care teams, including research on both past and future disasters.

This project considers the role the indigenous knowledge in the fishery community after the East Japan great earthquake disaster. As a result, we can ethnographically uncover that both elements of individualism and the collectivism were included in the local fishery activity; a woman brought about innovation to be concerned with occupation; and as for the Shinto shrine and the scene that these were mutual being combined complimentarily, supports of the faith in playing a role. The traditional ecological knowledge, the conventional gender division which were important as memory of the communities. It was suggested that it was necessary to pay its attention to a culture tradition and the relations of the revival policy, that it was necessary to think about interaction with the local culture on revival policy making at the same time to understand a process of the revival.

The joint research aims to conduct multidisciplinary studies on the serious nuclear disasters -Chernobyl and Fukushima- and to create a model of humanitarian reconstruction after nuclear accident, based on the perspectives of the affected residents. The field surveys have been carried for original data and new knowledge. International conferences were held twice (University College of London and Szeged University in Hungary). After the workshops in Tokyo ( University of Tokyo) and Sapporo (Hokkaido University), formulating the reconstruction models, the final outputs of the research project are now in the process of editing a book, titled as "Nuclear disaster and civic model of reconstruction: Chernobyl and Fukushima". Meanwhile, being asked by the EU to give a presentation at an official conference of the EU in Luxembourg in November 2016, the results of the joint research were reported, and the European experts of the issue accepted them with big interests.

This project aimed to help devastated population of Fukushima in the aftermath of 3.11 Great East Japan Earthquake. It was to explore a public anthropological approach, constructed by several cooperative academic research activities contributing to the public spheres. Interviews toward the evacuees of Fukushima in Tsukuba city supported the construction of the safety network necessary there. Moreover, those visual clips of the various interviewees among the actors related to the construction of safety network shows the lessons from the experiences. This will become a precious archive for the disaster reconstruction. Academically, this project clarified that the exploration for public anthropology contributes a lot to the empowerment of devastated population. Through this empowerment, several activities have been realized such as, tourism to the devastated areas, protecting the intangible cultural heritages or visual archives on the construction of safety network in Tsukuba.

1.In order to analyze the influence of disaster to the religious plurality in affected area on macro level, we focused on the transition of the number of the facilities of religions in affected area. We collected the data of Kobe, Miyagi, Fukushima, Iwate (Japan), Aceh, Nias, Sumatra Barat, Yograkarta and Taiwan and clarify the pattern of the transition of religious balance between major and minor religions before and after great disaster. 2.Based on these results, we tried to show the background and the influence of religious aid to these transition in detail by ethnographic studies on each area. 3.In addition, holding international conferences four times, we shared these results with the local research institutions (ex. Gadjah Mada Univ. Indonesia, Sichuan Univ. China, Mimal Sinan Umiv. Turkey) and discussed the role of humanistic and social sciences to facilitate religious aid taking religious plurality into account.

The intangible cultural heritage contributes community recover process after the Great East Japan Earthquake and Tsunami. The purpose of the project is to broadcast abroad the results of the related applied anthropology in Japan and to network international scholarship of the field. Through three years period, we organized four international workshops (or session) in UK, New Zealand, Indonesia, and Japan and participated to read the paper in many international conferences. These activities encouraged international concerns of disaster ethnography in Japan studies. We also contribute to awaken the international scholarship the importance of disaster collaborative humanities focus on local memory and cultural heritage such as festival, ritual and performing arts. We also have plans of publication (in progress) both in English and Japanese involving the scholars in New Zealand.

In the Arctic where a high index of the global warming was seen in in comparison with a middle-low degree zone, the influence of the climate change to the indigenous socio-cultural system was analyzed based on the information of the recent environment history. From the case study of the inland river basin (Lena River), the high humidity is sensed in the region which affected the frequency and larger scale of spring ice-melted floods, snow-melted floods, and summer rain floods increased. The latter two floods brought a crisis for local live stock farming occupation which only had formed as an adaptation to the spring ice-melted flood. On the other hand, from the case study of coastal region (the Alaska coast) which is sensed as a trend of draught the indigenous communities does not intensively use the low land and the flood plain, which resulted no serious damage occurred. The focus on the micro-environment is the clue for the method of the climate change and global society.

200 字程度In the background of the development of the digital visual technology, this project explores the new methodologies and the potential of the anthropological research. As the concrete tasks, (i) the inquiry of the latest knowledge of digital visual anthropology, (ii) the exploration of the general knowledge of the visual anthropology in British-American contexts, (iii) the exploration of the Japanese history of anthropological photography, (iv) the development of the methodology of the public anthropological practice using the digital visual technology. My first finding is that anthropology with the digital technology becomes rather collaborative orientations including the replacing the relations of fieldworkers with informants with the interlocutor. Another finding is the possibility of social engagement of the anthropological knowledge with digital technology much efficiently and persuasively.

The Russian Far East, which is located in the opposite side of the Sea of Japan, is rich in forest. In this research project, we researched and analyzed the culture that has been grown in this area from two sides of adaptation; one was the adaptation to the natural environment and the other was that to political and economic environment, which was historically cleated by human activities. As a result, we could show that the relation between culture and political-economic environment was more intimate, direct, and restrained than that between culture and nature and that, at the same time, it is more fragile and less flexible.

This research project was focused on how the minority people construct their identity as ‘indigenous’ in the climate of international expansion of ideology of ‘indigenous’ and also in the political situations of each countries. As a result of the five year’s cooperative research from comparative point of view, it became clear that the difference of the identity construction, - from the people who identify themselves as indigenous to the people who deny it - is the result of economical globalization, especially neo-liberalism. From this shared understanding, members have presented each papers at the final international symposium heldin the final year. We are now in the process of the publication of the result.

Reindeer Herding Culture in the Far Northern Regions of Russia, after the breakup of Soviet Union has changed with the variation inside each regions and ethnic cultures. The Carriers of this Culture are the Small numbered indigenous peoples of the North. We, the project researchers, have accomplished the participant observation from the aspect of the economical and social structure changes, environmental changes, and cultural reconstruction. The main result is that the Reindeer herding Culture functions well as one of ethnic cultures which adapts resiliently in the various phenomena.

平成18年度は、海外調査を中心として、中国における資源人類学のワークショップを実施するとともに、国内で研究集会を実施し、国内での国際シンポジウムに参加して発表を行った。 1.調査研究特定領域研究のまとめの年にあたるため、成果の取りまとめのために集中的な調査活動を実施した。調査地は、インド南部のタミール・ナドゥにおける津波罹災地域における土地利用と地域社会のレジリエンスに関する調査、極北カナダのイヌイット社会における海獣狩猟と資源配分に関する調査、ロシア・チュコト半島における海獣猟の調査、ラオス南部・カンボアジア・ベトナムにおける池の所有と共有に関する調査、三重県における猿害と地域社会の対応に関する調査、北海道利尻島、新潟県佐渡島における水産資源利用の歴史に関する調査、ラオス中部のビエンチャン平原における資源利用の季節変動に関する調査、バングラデッシュにおける洪水・旱魃と農地利用の変動性に関する調査などを実施した。その成果は、現在準備中の論集にデータとして活用されている。 2.海外シンポジウム 2-1.平成18年6月、中国雲南省の昆明にある雲南大学において、資源利用と生態史に関するシンポジウムを開催し、日本側から5名、中国側から30名が参加し、近年のグローバル化、中国の開発政策が土地利用や交易、住民の移動にどのような影響をあたえてきたかについての討論を行った。 2-2.平成18年6月、韓国の済州島で開催された海女に関する国際シンポジウムに秋道が参加し、沿岸地域における海女の生態戦略についての口頭発表をおこなった。 2-3.平成18年9月、中国の広西チワン族自治区の桂林市で、中国における第1回国際生態人類学研究会の設立ワークショップに参加した。日本側からは3名、中国側からは20数名が参加した。この研究会は、日中の生態人類学の交流を目的として企画され、資源人類学の成果を公表する重要な機会となった。 3.国内研究会と国際シンポジウム平成18年4月、京都において共同研究会を開催し、今年度の研究計画や出版に向けての見通しについて討論を行った。また、平成18年12月には東京外国語大学で開催された国際シンポジウムでは、班代表として口頭発表を行った。 4.研究成果別紙の通り、研究発表、報告集、論文として多数の成果を公表することができた。また、中国、韓国など海外においても生態史に関連するシンポジウムなどで研究交流を達成することができた。

The object of this research is to analyze the correlation between the history of the nothern erea of Japan island including Sakhalin island and the culture zone of the Amur river basin in the 13th〜19th century, especially the correlation between the indineous minority peoples of the lower Amur river basin, Ussuri river basin and Ainu peoples of Sakhalin island. The most important results of our research are as follows. (1)We could reveal a part of the Djurchin society in the Amur river basin and Ussuri river basin before 14th century and the fact that there was the structure built at Tyr hill, which was the lowest Amur river basin, in Yuan Dynasty before Eineiji templle built by Ming Dynasty in 15th century by means of archaeological relics. (2)Nanai peoples, Ul'ch peoples and Nivkhi peoples married each other, and Ul'ch went to Sakhalin island to marry with Ainu as well as to trade with Ainu and Japanese. In other words, Sakhalin island was the region of cultural, human interchange between the indeginous peoples of of the Amur river basin and Ainu peoples as well as the region to trade each other.

本研究は、シベリア・ヤクーチア地域の先住民社会を対象とし、歴史的・政治経済的条件のなかで、先住民の民俗環境知識の生成メカニズムの解明を目的としている。最終年度である2004年度においては、前年度までに収集してきたフィールド民族誌資料を整理すると共に、文献資料を行い、国内の専門家と意見交換を行いながら、研究を進めた。結論から言うならば、当該地域の先住民の民俗環境知識は、畜産学・家畜管理学的な知見に基づく農業政策の影響をうけながらも、放牧活動を実践する牧夫達の経験的知見の相続そして個人的な発見によって生成されている。ただし、その知識はいくつかの相に分類でき、そのことはヤクーチア地域の社会主義化=集団化・定住化と深く結びついている。知識は、(1)家畜の再生産、特に獣医学的な知識にかかわるもの、(2)家畜の群れとしての行動についての知識、(3)牧夫達が家畜管理を行う際の放牧地選定及び宿営地設営にかかわる知識である。類型的に述べると(1)から(3)の順で科学的知識の影響は弱くなり牧夫の経験的な知識が重要性を増すことになる。そのことは、これらの知識が共有される人々の量に関連する。つまり(1)に近いほど、この知識を共有する(あるいは蓄積しうる)社会的階層が人々が多く(3)については牧夫などに限られる。従来、科学的知見は専門家集団に限られ、経験的知識はより幅広い層に認められるという理解であるが、これは歴史的・政治経済的条件のなかで生業という活動に従事する人々自体が先住民コミュニティのなかで少数化していることを示している。主たる成果は、ソ連時代に科学的な畜産技術・家畜管理学的技術が導入されたトナカイ飼育のなかで、牧夫達の移動距離や行動パターンを質的・量的に把握し、群れ管理の技術と知識の位相について論考を出版したことである。第二に、その広い意味での歴史的背景を明らかにした。1920-30年代の初期ソビエト政権においてヤクーチアの民族知識人がみずからの生業の産業化の過程をどのように評価していたのか、民族学史・科学史という視点で考察した論考を出版した。さらに、上記にのべたメカニズムをより具体的な民族誌的文脈に即した論考の出版を計画している。

Terayama visited some Siberian and Russian Far Eastern Archives (Novosibirsk, Irkutsk, Chita, Blagoveshchensk, Khavarovsk) so as to collect documents about interwar period history of this region. In Kahavarosk State (oblast') Library he could get a lot of newspaper, journal articles about the facts uncovered and published afar the collapse of Soviet Union. In the report of this project, using these materials, he summarizes such topics as 1)railway construction (Baika-Amur truck, double track on Siberian railway), 2)development of the defense and gold industries, 3)use of forced labor, 4)many repressed party and governmental leaders, 5)Japanese internees in the Soviet Union after the World War II. He investigates the tendency and direction of historical research of this region. Kuribayashi investigates the exchange of letters in Mongolia from Mongolian to Latin, and from Latin to contemporary Cyrillic. He introduces two articles by professor Damdinslen, who played a crucial role in the formation of the Cyrillic method to write in 1941. One is the article of 1940 by which he proposed not to write weakened vowel in writing of Mongolian language in Latin letter and the other is the article of 1945 that characterizes the Cyrillic writing method with the same principles. Oka visited archives in Ulan-Bator and got materials about the exchange of municipal administrative system of Mongolian republics after the revolution of 1921. Recently he sheds some light on the role of "otog" and "bug", - tribal ruling organization under "taiji"-. He considers that under the new regime these tribal organizations, namely, "otogs" and "bugs" were succeeded to newly formed "soms" and the essential interest of the regime was not to reform the status structure of "ki" formed by "saryo","zuicho" and "taiji". He explained this process by introducing the concrete example of a province. Takakura visited Iakutsk to do field work in Sakha republic. He investigates the history of research on Sakah (Iakutsk) from the late imperial period through the Soviet Union. He pays attention to the period of 1920-1930s when Sakha ethnologists started scientific research and, especially to three typical Sakha intelligentsia - Nikiforov, Krakovskii and Ksenofontov -. He presents the activity and life of these scholars, interaction with other intelligentsia supporting the Soviet regime. By this he defines the meaning of the research of this period for the Sakha ethnology.

The purpose of this research was to analyze the process of the structural transition of ethnic and/or regional communities in the post-socialist nations and areas from a point of view of people's life world. We had two international workshops and two small meetings in these two years, and analyzed cases of Siberian reindeer breeders, minorities in East Europe, and the people in Central Asia. As a result of analysis, we concluded that we should have shared common concepts and recognition to conduct the field research in societies in Post-socialist nations and areas, e.g., 1) the concept of the life world in socialist and post-socialist societies, 2) the recognition of the difference between societies that experienced socialism and those without it, and 3) matters that researchers should pay attention to in their field research. As to the last point, we made a list of items for the field research in post-socialist societies.

シベリア・ヤクーチア先住民の社会経済的戦略を、土地の私的利用・所有に関する法制度の展開をふまえつつ、多面的な自然資源利用の観点から社会人類学的に解明することを目指したのが本研究である。狩猟牧畜民である彼等の重層的自然資源利用と土地所有の関係性を理解するため、本年度は、(1)土地および家畜の所有観に関する民族誌資料を新たに収集する一方で、(2)前年度までに集めた資料を含めて、ヤクーチア先住民社会における土地および民族自然観に対する民族誌事例が導き出せる理論的可能性を検討した。これは特に先住民資源管理論・民俗自然知識論といった領域に関わるものである。(3)同時に彼等の自然観・資源利用の実践を支える民俗知識と近年のヤクーチア社会の民族政治状況との関わり--特に近年の民俗宗教復興との関係--について研究をすすめた。その結果は、日本語・英文双方で出版されつつあり、研究発表欄に載せたとおりである。研究実施状況は下記の通りである。5月16日〜20日にかけてカナダ・ケベックで開かれた第4回国際極北社会科学会議(ICASS)で、前年度までの成果を発表した。その後、国立自然史博物館(アメリカ合衆国ワシントンD.C.)の極北研究センターで資料収集を行う一方で、同所に勤務するI.クループニック教授と面談し、筆者の調査及び理論研究について助言を受けた。さらに6月中旬から7月初頭にかけての3週間、ロシア連邦サハ共和国で民族誌的調査を行った。ここでは主として先住民サハ人の伝統的儀礼馬乳酒祭に対して参与観察を行い、民俗自然観および土地所有観念に関する資料を収集するとともに、これらの儀礼が今日の民族政治状況のなかでもつ意味づけについて調査を行った。また大阪にある国立民族学博物館、網走市にある北方民族博物館において資料収集を行った。

The Sakha in the Yakuts region not only present us a living example of the survival of horse herding peoples in the modern world, but they exemplify a historical account of the adaptation of man toward severe climates. This field survey studied the Sakha during summer soltice festivities, taking in video recordings of their lives, and audio recordings of legends and folk songs. The survey indicated evidence that the younger generation was apt toward maintaining the traditional culture, along with their older generation. Horse herding is conducted on relatively small scale grasslands in Alass, formed by thawing of permafrost ground. Horse grazing is done in small area segments of one male unit, and from this practice, it is apparent that the original Mongol grassland herding developed into herding with the two distinct purposes : one, for raising working animals, i.e. horses trained for riding and working ; the other, for raising livestock for meat and leather products. The Sakha consider both purposes as equally important. Reindeer herding is facing extinction, and this has been accelerated by factors such as the former Soviet policy toward ethnic cultures, environmental destruction, and recent Russian economic crisis. Such factors have presented an extreme challenge toward the survival and maintenance of traditional cultures. However, it should be noted that the Nenets of Gydan Peninsular have been able to maintain their traditional lifestyle, consisting of reindeer herding, fishing, and hunting. With the disappearance of traditional life sustenance activities, such as reindeer herding, hunting, and fishing, hunting for wild animals for the purpose of marketing meat has become increasingly important. Furthermore, the recent onset of Western marketing principles have had a severe impact on the traditional markets for wild meat and fur, established during the Soviet era. Recent environmental protection measures have posed strict limits on hunting and fishing activities, further jeopardizing the continuation of traditional cultures and lifestyles.

2012年3月22日から24日にかけて、ロシア連邦サハ共和国エヴェノ・ブィタンタイ郡サクリール（バタガイ＝アリタ）村で「日本人のみたトナカイ遊牧民：シベリア民俗写真を現地に戻して展示する試み」と題する写真展が行われました。この村は高倉浩樹准教授が、1994-1997年に日本人初の本格的シベリア人類学調査を行った場所です。展示の趣旨は（１）研究資料としての写真を当地の人々に返却することで、彼らにとっての記憶と記録に変換する、（２）2008年にセンターが行った仙台市でのシベリア写真展において、来場者が書いた感想＝「シベリアの手紙」を翻訳し現地に届ける事で、市民の間の文化交流を実施するというものでした。

本企画では，「アフリカ」「中東」などの地域名を掲げた地域民族誌研究を事例としてふりかえつつ，人文学・社会科学における民族誌的知見の位置づけを解明するとともに，人類学の可能性を探求しようとするものである。様々な地域でのフィールドの現場における民族誌的事実を理解するために必要な空間的構想力のあり方を支える方法論や視座がどのようなものかを言語化する。具体的には，各地域に特徴的な議論，研究の手法を紹介しながら地域民族誌の研究史をたどり，当該地域をどのように概念化してきたのか，そこで内包されていた前提や視座を明示する。その上で地域民族誌と地域研究における方法論の共通性と相違に着目したうえで，日本の人類学における地域民族誌の特徴を解明する。

東日本大震災における地震・津波は、祭礼行事や民俗芸能、食料確保に係わる伝統的な生業や工芸などの様々な在来知や技術といった民俗文化を保持してきた地域社会に多大な影響を与えた。とりわけ沿岸部の集落そのものが失われた場合もある。震災からの復興過程にあっては、仮設住宅への移動など、部分的・全面的な集団移転が実施されている。その結果、震災前の地域毎のコミュニティを前提として民俗文化の継承・発展が行われる条件とは異なる事態が生成している。地域経済の変化や支援行政も、当然ながら地域社会に大きな影響を与えている。こうした状況に対して、地方行政とりわけ民俗文化の保護に係わる文化行政からはさまざまな施策が行われている。本企画は、主として宮城県が実施する地域文化復興支援政策の現状とその方向性を把握し、評価・分析することで、民俗学・文化人類学や関連する分野（以下、「民俗学などの分野」）が可能な支援のあり方を方法論的・理論的に探求するものである。すでに民俗学・文化人類学分野も含めてさまざまな形で民俗文化の復興支援は実施されている。それらは緊急的に実施されたものが多い。本企画では、実際に支援に関わった研究者や地方文化行政の実務家にも参加してもらい、それらの支援のあり方が、民俗学などの分野においていかに位置づけられるのか、その問題点と可能性をふくめて検討を行う。また今回のような災害に直面した民俗文化財などの復興支援行政に対して、中長期的展望な立場から民俗学などの分野で可能な支援の方法と組織化について検討する。

本研究は、北方人類学分野において、展示実践を用いた研究成果の社会還元が、異文化理解の実践的文脈においていかなる社会的意味をもつのか、また人類学の方法論においていかなる効果をもつのか、探求しようとするものである。民族誌資料の社会的有用性を検討する公共人類学の問題意識を共有しつつ、実際に何らかの形ですでに展示実践を行ってきた研究者・そしてその実践に関わる職業専門家をメンバーとし、（１）映像資料・民俗資料という媒体が喚起する異文化理解の性質について検討するとともに、（２）それらがいかなる社会の単位においてどのような公共的意義をもつのかについて解明を試み、また（３）展示実践をすることによって見えてくる人類学の現地調査の倫理と方法論への貢献を目指す。

本研究の目的は、シベリアと北米の極北圏において共通して発生する春の氷融洪水に地域社会がいかなる対応をしているか、人類学・土木工学・リモートセンシングの手法を用いて明らかにすることを通して、極北圏の巨大河川の存在を前提にした人間社会の特徴を示すことにあります。シベリアの生態系というと、ツンドラ、タイガを思い浮かべることが多いかもしれませんが、北極海にそそぐ巨大な河川とこれに関わる無数の支流が形成されていることも大きな特徴のひとつです。そして、極北圏の人間社会の特徴には、この大小様々な河川の動態を調整することで成り立っているという側面があります。特に重要なのは川幅数キロに渡るような大河川が冬期に凍結し、春には解凍するが、上流が南、下流が北という特質故に、氷融そして雪解けを原因とした洪水（氾濫）が春期に恒常的に発生していることです。そして、シベリアの都市・農村いずれの場合であっても、そうした河川の生態系を前提として形成されているのです。本研究では、この氷融洪水への社会的対応を、ローカル社会の在来的知識や民俗伝承という観点、さらに道路や水道などの近代的社会インフラ技術という観点から接近することで明らかにしていきます。さらに、リモートセンシングの手法を用いることでその洪水の空間的理解を深めることが可能になります。そして、このことを通して、氷融洪水を前提としたシベリア地域社会にみられる生態的特質と社会技術との関係を明らかにします。さらに、シベリア地域社会の理解を深めるために、本研究では類似した生態条件にある北米極北圏も比較の対象にいれています。そのことで国家体制や民族集団といった相違を踏まえ、極北圏の巨大河川という生態系のなかで形成された人類社会の特徴の解明が可能になると考えています。

本研究の目的は、食糧生産・居住・水道設備・輸送システムなどに関わる伝統的な文化およびこの地域に特有な形で近代化された技術システムに着目しながら、ミクロ環境と人間の社会文化的適応との相互作用を理解することである。歴史的背景およびシベリア以外の極北圏／北方圏との地域比較をもふまえながら、人類生態と社会的技術の関係の今日的プロセスを明らかにすると共に、エネルギー開発が人間環境にいかなる影響をあたえているのか分析を進めていく。

本研究は、旧社会主義圏における「制度としての人類学」の位置づけを解明し、その知識の社会的文脈についての民族誌的分析を行う。欧米人類学とは異なる理論を確立したソビエト民族学に主たる焦点をあて、その知の制度編成のあり方と、そこで実践された「文化（民俗・民族）的差異の対象化」のあり方を解明することを目的とする。この試みは、国家の学術教育制度において確立されてきた近代人類学のあり方を歴史的に分析するものであるが、ロシア及び社会主義体制という変数を設け、そこに焦点をあてることで、非西欧人類学の位相についての考察を深めることになる。具体的には、ロシア・東欧・中央アジア・モンゴル・中国におけるソビエト民族学の求心力の有無・強弱を共通の分析対象とし、社会主義体制において固有に現れる民族学的研究の独自性が存在するのか──を共通の作業仮説とし、（１）学説史（２）隣接分野との関係性（３）今日における知識の位相の三つの視座から研究を進めたい。
