    Conjugated polymers have recently emerged as a new class of photocatalysts. However, many conjugated polymer photocatalysts are not as effective as inorganic materials due to the limited electronic properties of their LUMO and HOMO and low long-term stability caused by the degradation of the conjugated backbone. In the present study, we have demonstrated, for the first time, the superior Visible (Vis) light-driven photocatalytic activity (photodegradation and hydrogen generation) of conjugated polymer nanocrystals (NCs) of polydiacetylene (PDA) derivatives, especially, polyDCHD NCs for the photodegradation of Rhodamine B (RhB) compared with that of the state- of-the-art P25 TiO2 nanoparticles (NPs). In addition, we have revealed the morphological effects of polyDCHD NCs, long-term stability, and the photocatalytic degradation mechanisms.

    We have successfully fabricated well-defined diacetylene (DA) nanocrystals, and clarified size-dependence of structural phase transition in solid-state polymerization of the DA nanocrystals. In particular, solid-state polymerization of DA nanofibers quantitatively proceeded due to suitable stress-strain behavior, compared with both nanocrystal and bulk crystal. In addition, we found that third-order nonlinear optical susceptibility of polydiacetylene nanofiber was superior to that of bulk crystal.

    Aiming at investigating the structural correlations for physical properties of organic molecular clusters, some dispersion states, for example, molecule state, cluster, and organic nanocrystals, could be experimentally controlled suitably by finely optimizing the rates of phase separation, segregation, and crystallization of organic molecules embedded polymer microspheres that is a so-called extremely limited small space. “Phase separation in polymerization field and subsequent nanocrystallization process” has been developed successfully in perylene and polystyrene (PS) system. Actually, the state of perylene dispersed in polymer microspheres was analyzed and evaluated by the measurements with the conventional fluorescence spectroscopy, near-field scanning optical microscopy, and positron annihilation method. As a result, the intermediate dispersion state would be strongly suggested for the first time in the case of perylene embedded in PS microshperes.

    Nanofibers (NFs) of amphiphilic diacetylene (Am-DA) and DA having carbazolyl moiety (Cz-DA) have been fabricated by using the reprecipitation method, and further solid-state polymerized to convert into polydiacetylene (PDA) NFs. The oriented thin films with highly optical quality have been obtained successfully in any case of PDA NFs, when so-called Tapered Cell process was improved. It is possible to make a process of chemical doping, since hollowed structure exists inside Poly(Am-DA) NF from TEM observation. On the other hand, crystal structure has been partially broken down, due to extremely high rigidity, in the case of iodide doping for Poly(Cz-DA) NF, and the conductivity was measured less reproducibly and unstably in the oriented thin films composed of Poly(Cz-DA) NFs. In addition, the possibility of super conductive PDA NFs was discussed in detail together with Research Collaborators of NIMS.

    The electric field-induced orientation of rubrene single crystals was observed in a nonpolar solvent. Rubrene single microcrystals responded to an AC electric field beyond a crystal-size dependent threshold. The maximum dipole moment induced in the longitudinal axis (b-axis) of rubrene single crystals on a SiO_2/Si substrate was aligned almost parallel to the direction of the applied electric field. Field-effect transistors with these orientated crystals exhibited low variability of the carrier mobility of 0.03~0.07 cm^2/Vs. The orientation technique is expected to be applied to the fabrication of large-area single-crystal FETs.

    We have successfully fabricated doped Cu-TCNQ nanocrystals, using the co-precipitation method involving a chemical reduction process, which took the composition ratio of Cu:TCNQ = 1.3:1 and contained both TCNQ anion and dianion. Interestingly, the doped nanocrystals exhibited a new strong absorption in near-infrared (NIR) region, clearly dependent on the content of the TCNQ dianion.

    Strong photon-molecule coupled field induced by localized surface plasmon (LSP) on organic-metal hetero nano-interface are recently of much interest. However, only a few studies on LSP-excited chemical reaction on hetero nano-interface has been reported so far. Aiming at investigating the general possibility of such kind of chemical reaction, the photo-polymerization was performed by irradiating visible-light on a patterned gold-sputtered substrate and/or on a silica microparticle. Some research results in the present research project would be very useful and provide the fabrication process for a novel nano-structure.

    In the present project, "Photo-catalytic reduction method" has been successfully established to fabricate organic-metal hetero nano-interface as a common technique, e.g., polydiacetylene nanocrystal (core)/metal (Ag.Au, and Pt) hybridized nanocrystals. The nonlinear optical property of these hybridized nanocrystals wereconfirmed to increase, due to the enhancement of optical electric field induced by localized surface plasmon from metal nano-shell structure, when so-called Z-Scan measurement has been carried out.
