Scalar-relativistic density functional calculations were applied to some trivalent europium complexes to discuss the covalent interactions in their coordination bonds. Five Eu (III) complexes whose 151Eu Mössbauer isomer shifts vary from −1.77 to 0.57 mm s−1 were modeled by referring previously reported Mössbauer experiments. Geometrical optimizations of their complexes using BP86 functional reproduced the experimental coordination structures. Single-point calculations were applied to their optimized geometries at three different density functionals, namely, BP86, B3LYP, and B2PLYP, to obtain their electron densities at Eu nucleus. A comparison of the linearity between the electron densities and the corresponding 151Eu Mössbauer isomer shifts revealed that the B2PLYP functional shows the best linearity. We also performed electron population and bond analyses of the molecular orbitals in their complexes obtained by single-point calculations using Mulliken’s procedure. As a result, the electron densities of both d- and f-orbital electrons of Eu ion in the complexes were found to be correlated to the experimental 151Eu Mössbauer isomer shifts. This result indicated that the d- and f-orbital electrons in the Eu ion are involved in the covalent interaction of the coordination bond between the Eu ion and the ligands.

<title>Abstract</title> Four new alkyl-pyridinedicarboxyamides (R-PDA; R = butyl, octyl, decyl, dodecyl) were synthesized and used as extractants for partitioning minor actinides from high level radioactive waste using extraction chromatography. The R-PDAs were successfully impregnated into XAD resins (Amberlite). The prepared adsorbents, R-PDA/XAD, exhibited moderate adsorptions of both Am(III) and Eu(III), and separation between Am(III) and Eu(III), over a high HNO3 concentration range (3–5 M). Deterioration of the prepared adsorbent as a result of contact with HNO3 solution was prevented by using R-PDAs containing longer alkyl groups. The equilibrium data for Eu(III) were analyzed using Langmuir and Freundlich isotherm models. The adsorption of Eu(III) ions onto the R-PDA/XAD was fitted better to the Langmuir isotherm than to the Freundlich isotherm. The maximum adsorption capacity was determined to be 24.2 mg Eu/g (R-PDA/XAD).

    The reaction of tetramethylthiuram disulfide with a methanol solution containing CoCl2·6H2O and 4,6-diphenyl-4,6-diphosphanonane-1,9-diamine (313NPPN) gave complexes of [Co(dtc)2{rac(P)- or meso(P)-313HNPPNH}]3+ (313HNPPNH = diprotonated form of 313NPPN, dtc = dimethyldithiocarbamate ion). The crystal structure of the perchlorate salt of the meso(P) isomer was determined by X-ray analysis. Crystal data: monoclinic, P21/c, a = 10.789(2), b = 30.325(9), c = 12.888(2) Å, β = 102.06(1)°, V = 4123(1) Å3, Dx = 1.55 g cm−3, Z = 4, and R = 0.077 for 3347 reflections. The 313HNPPNH ligand in the complex coordinates to the Co(III) center through two phosphorus atoms as a didentate four-membered chelate ligand. The crystal structure of [Co(dtc)2{NH2(CH2)3P(CH2OH)(C6H5)}]B(C6H5)4, which formed as a by-product in the preparation of the above Co(III)–313HNPPNH complexes, was also determined. Crystal data: triclinic, , a = 13.817(2), b = 15.277(3), c = 10.737(2) Å, α = 109.90(1), β = 94.14(2), γ = 101.00(1)°, V = 2068.8(7) Å3, Dx = 1.31 g cm−3, Z = 2, and R = 0.053 for 4303 reflections. [NiCl{rac(P)-343NPPN}]PF6 (343NPPN = 4,9-diphenyl–4,9-diphosphadodecane-1,12-diamine) was prepared by the reaction of 343NPPN with NiCl2·6H2O, and the crystal structure was determined. Crystal data: monoclinic, P21/n, a = 8.367(2), b = 24.058(2), c = 13.988(2) Å, β = 106.17(1)°, V = 2704(1) Å3, Dx = 1.54 g cm−3, Z = 4, and R = 0.053 for 3043 reflections. The geometry of the complex is a distorted square pyramid with a chloride ion at the apical position, and the 343NPPN ligand functions as a tetradentate chelate ligand.

Since Prussian blue (PB, or FeHCF) and its analogues (PBAs or MHCF (M=Ni, Zn, Co, Cu, etc.)) are well known as adsorbents of some ions or small molecules, especially, alkali metal cations such as Na^+, K^+, and Cs^+, these materials had been regarded as promising adsorbents to remove a radioactive Cs^+ from radioactive wastes. However, to adsorb a radioactive Cs^+ with MHCF causes the increase of radioactive wastes, so it is important to develop a reusable new system, or a controllable Cs^+ adsorbing/desorbing system. We succeeded in preparing nanoparticle inks of MHCFs, which are able to disperse into several solvents, and able to form films with the nanoparticle inks by conventional wet processes. Then we prepared the CuHCF nanoparticle films on Au/quartz substrates by a spin-coating method, and attempted to control the adsorption or desorption of alkali metal cations electrochemically. The electrochemical redox by cyclic voltammetry (CV) and adsorption/desorption measurement by electrochemical quartz crystal microbalance (EQCM) were carried out synchronously. For example, a copper substituted PBA, CuHCF films showed stable reversible redox signals for Na^+, K^+, and Cs^+ in the aqueous solution dissolving the corresponding nitrate salts (NaNO_3, KNO_3, and CsNO_3) as electrolytes. The redox potentials were different to each other, +0.55 V, +0.65 V, and +0.90 V (vs. SCE) for Na^+, K^+, and Cs^+, respectively. According to EQCM measurement, the mass changes followed by a cation adsorption/desorption occurred at the above-described potentials respectively and the ratios of mass showed almost 1:1:6 for Na^+:K^+:Cs^+. The difference of redox potentials and good duplicability of CV and EQCM signals suggests the possibility of electrochemically controllable cation adsorbing/desorbing systems.

The mechanism of the complex reaction combining the two reaction of reduction and aggregation of actinide in solution was elucidated by electrochemical analysis. It has been observed that the reduction rate of uranium(V) ion increases when the colloid of a tetravalent uranium formed by reduction precipitate is present. It was clarified that this catalytic effect can be observed also when zirconium tetravalent hydroxide colloids coexist in addition to uranium. It was also clarified that there is a clear difference in the electrolytic deposition behavior between uranium and neptunium, and that this difference is due to the electrochemical characteristics of the deposited chemical species.

Many of the important issues in the field of nuclear energy are deeply related to chemical reactions occurring at the two-phase interfaces of solid, liquid and gas. However, it is difficult to directly obtain microscopic information on the chemical reactions occurring at the interfaces with conventional experimental methods. In the present study, we adopted an advanced second-order nonlinear vibrational spectroscopic technique, i.e., heterodyne-detected vibrational sum-frequency generation spectroscopy (HD-VSFG), and this enabled us to study the atomic and molecular structures at the interfaces related to solvent extraction separation and actinide chemistry, etc. that are significant in the field of nuclear energy.

In this study, we had focused on the adsorption of metal cation onto diamond surface. Objectives of this study is to elucidate the mechanism on the adsorption of rare earth cations, which is contained into the high level liquid waste generated by reprocessing spent nuclear fuels. Based on the dependence of acidity on the distribution coefficient of rare earth cations, and analysis of the adsorption isotherms and/or adsorption capacity, the adsorption of rare earth is mono-layer plain adsorption and the 1:1 stoichiometric proportion of the adsorption with ionic bonding nature. The investigation by XPS, FT-IR and TRLFS indicated the consistent results with the mechanism which stated above.

MIDOA(2,2'-(Methylimino)bis(N,N-dioctylacetamide)), whose structural formulae is CH3N-(CH2CON(C8H17)2)2, has a high solubility in n-dodecane, and shows the very high distribution ratio over 100, for Pd(II), Tc(VII) and Re(VII) from diluted HNO3 to n-dodecane. The D values decrease gradually with HNO3 concentration. The EXAFS suggests that, the chemical state of M(VII)O4- is kept during the extraction process. The results of 1H-NMR and EXAFS assured the formation of the M(VII)O4-vs.H+MIDOA complex in the organic solution.Comparison of the observed and calculated IR spectra elucidated that an intramolecular hydrogen bond was formed in H+MIDOA and the M(VII)O4 ion interact with H+MIDOA through multiple C-Hnvs.O hydrogen bonds. The transmutation feasibility of highly radioactive FP(e.g.,Ba) to non radioactve rare earth(e.g., La) was suggested by neutron capture reaction.
