Abstract Recent sea ice changes in the Antarctic affect the radiation budget at the top of the atmosphere (TOA), especially the TOA upward shortwave radiation (TOA SW ). The effect of sea ice changes on TOA SW is also affected by clouds. However, there is no quantitative evaluation of the effect of sea ice and clouds on the interannual variation in TOA SW over the whole Antarctic. Focusing on a monthly scale, we investigated the interannual variation in TOA SW over the Antarctic using the Clouds and the Earth’s Radiant Energy System (CERES) observation from July 2000 to June 2023. The annual mean TOA SW over the Antarctic showed a decreasing trend (−0.7 W m −2 decade −1 ) with relatively large interannual variability. Sea ice cover from November to January mainly explained TOA SW variability, but clouds over ocean from November to January partially attenuated the effect of sea ice cover. Unlike over ocean, TOA SW variability over the Antarctic was less related to TOA SW variability over land. The annual mean TOA SW over land showed relatively small interannual variations. These interannual variations were mainly related to cloud fraction from October to December, which was associated with the Antarctic Oscillation. Our results suggest that the amount of sea ice melt and the cloud effect in spring and summer are essential factors for the interannual variation in TOA SW over the Antarctic.

Abstract The post-monsoon agricultural biomass burning activities in Northwest India have been recognized as a significant socio-environmental problem in recent years, primarily due to their severe impacts on air quality degradation across a wide area, including the capital New Delhi. Although these biomass burning activities have been extensively studied from an air quality perspective, their potential impacts on the climate system, particularly through their influences on cloud and radiation fields, have been largely overlooked. In this study, we aim to address this research gap by analyzing fire, meteorological parameters, aerosol, cloud, and radiation data spanning nearly two decades (2002–2021), obtained from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) aboard the Aqua satellite, Modern-Era Retrospective Analysis Research and Applications, Version 2 (MERRA-2), and the Fifth Generation of European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) Reanalysis (ERA5). Our analysis reveals a notable increase in agricultural biomass burning intensity in Northwest India over the past two decades, contributing significantly to air quality degradation. Our analysis further indicates a delay in peak burning time (day of the year) and a shortening of the period of intense burning, reflecting changes in farming practices and agricultural biomass burning in Northwest India over the past two decades. These agricultural biomass burning activities substantially elevate total and light-absorbing aerosols, thereby affecting cloud properties and altering the radiation budget. The intensification of these burning activities can cause an increase in cloud droplet size and a decrease in cloud optical thickness, suggesting an enhancement of the cloud droplet collision-coalescence process during the period of intense burning. Similarly, the intensification of burning activities leads to increased cooling effects at the surface and top-of-the-atmosphere across shortwave and longwave spectral ranges, while inducing a heating effect within the atmosphere. These findings highlight the potential impacts of agricultural biomass burning activities on the regional climate system and hydrological cycle, emphasizing the need for more detailed studies in the future.

Abstract
Aerosol‐cloud interaction remains one of the least understood processes in climate science arena, despite its profound impacts in radiation and water budget perturbations. The aerosol effects on clouds largely depend on aerosol characteristics. Here, we implemented 17‐year (2003–2020) data set of aerosol, cloud, and meteorological factors collected over East Asia—a highly polluted region with recent decreasing trend of air pollution due to control measures—to elucidate atmospheric regime‐dependent aerosol effects on water cloud properties by simultaneously accessing the response of air pollution control measures in cloud field. The study found a very close relationship between aerosol loading and cloud properties modifications in the continental region of East Asia with a significant response of air pollution control measures in the cloud field. The study further revealed that aerosols of the polluted continental atmosphere affected cloud micro‐ and macro‐physics differently than aerosols of the clean maritime atmosphere: in the former, increased aerosol loading increased the stability under cloud base and then enhanced cloud droplet collision‐coalescence process, resulting to increase cloud droplet size by decreasing cloud top height; whereas in the latter, increased aerosol loading decreased cloud droplet size without notable influence in the atmosphere thermodynamics and cloud top height. This study further showed a complex aerosol‐cloud interaction process in the polluted maritime atmosphere due to the mixed effect of polluted continental and clean maritime atmospheres. In all atmospheric regimes, cloud fraction was found to increase with the increase of aerosol loading.

Abstract To understand the climate impact of the wildfires, it is essential to monitor the aerosol emissions from biomass burning and to estimate their optical properties and radiative forcing. This study analyzed wildfires in Brazil, Angola, Australia, California, Siberia, and South‐east Asia that occurred after 2018 using data obtained with the Second‐generation GLobal Imager (SGLI) onboard Global Change Observation Mission—Climate which is a polar‐orbit satellite launched by JAXA on 23 December 2017. We showed the SGLI‐based 4‐year variation of the aerosol optical properties, Aerosol Optical Thickness, Ångström Exponent (AE), and Single Scattering Albedo (SSA) for each region complemented with other satellite‐ and ground‐based data. From the SSA and AE relationship analyses, we confirmed that their optical properties depend on the relative humidity and type of burned vegetation, which is consistent with the previous studies. Moreover, we estimated the net incoming radiation at the top of the atmosphere during the intense fire periods to understand the impact of the direct effect of biomass burning aerosols on radiative forcing. The estimates show a significant negative radiative forcing (i.e., a cooling effect) over the ocean (−78 and −96 Wm−2 in Australia and California, respectively). In contrast, small values are observed over land (∼−10 Wm−2 for all six regions). Therefore, taking the regional characteristics of the optical properties and surface reflectance into account is necessary to estimate the effect on radiative forcing and future impacts of a short‐lived climate forcer from wildfires.

Abstract We investigated the interannual variations in the annual mean and seasonal cycle of upward shortwave radiation at the top of atmosphere (TOA SW) over the Arctic using the Clouds and the Earth’s Radiant Energy System (CERES) observation data during 2001–2020. The annual mean TOA SW over the Arctic showed a decreasing trend from 2001 to 2012 (−2.5 W m−2 decade−1) and had a large interannual variability after 2012. The standard deviation of detrended TOA SW increased from 0.4 W m−2 in 2001–2012 to 1.1 W m−2 in 2012–2020. Over land, TOA SW variation was related to snow cover in May, snow cover, cloud fraction, and cloud optical depth (COD) in June, and cloud fraction and COD in July. Over ocean, TOA SW variation in June and July was linked to sea ice cover. TOA SW variation over ocean in June and July after 2012 was highly related to the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO). This study suggests that changes in the large annual mean TOA SW variability after 2012 is explained by the timing of land snow and sea ice melt in spring and summer, and cloud variability over land in summer.

This study presents a comprehensive comparison of Level 2.0 cloud properties between a Second-generation Global Imager (SGLI) aboard the GCOM-C satellite and a Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) aboard the Terra satellite, to better understand the qualities of cloud properties obtained from SGLI/GCOM-C launched on 23 December 2017. The cloud pixels identified as water phase by both satellite sensors are highly consistent to each other by more than 90%, although the consistency is only ~60% for ice phase cloud pixels. A comparison of cloud properties—cloud optical thickness (COT) and cloud particle effective radius (CER)—between these two satellite sensors reveals that water and ice cloud properties can have different degrees of agreement depending on underlying surface. The relative difference (RD) values of 22% (18%) and 37% (24%) for water cloud COT (CER) comparison over ocean and land surfaces and respective values of 35% (42%) and 35% (62%) for comparisons of ice cloud properties, and also other comparison metrics, suggest better agreements for water cloud properties than for ice cloud properties, and for ocean surface than for land surface. Though cloud properties differences between MODIS and SGLI can arise from inherent features of cloud retrieval algorithms, such as differences in ancillary data, surface reflectance, cloud droplet size distribution function, model for ice particle habit, etc., this study further identifies the important roles of cloud thickness and Sun and satellite positions for differences in cloud properties between SGLI and MODIS: the differences in cloud properties are found to increase for thinner clouds, higher solar zenith angle, and higher differences in viewing zenith and azimuth angles between these satellite sensors, and such differences are more distinct for water cloud properties than for ice cloud properties.

Abstract Aerosols play important roles in modulations of cloud properties and hydrological cycle by decreasing the size of cloud droplets with the increase of aerosols under the condition of fixed liquid water path, which is known as the first aerosol indirect effect or Twomey-effect or microphysical effect. Using high-quality aerosol data from surface observations and statistically decoupling the influence of meteorological factors, we show that highly loaded aerosols can counter this microphysical effect through the radiative effect to result both the decrease and increase of cloud droplet size depending on liquid water path in water clouds. The radiative effect due to increased aerosols reduces the moisture content, but increases the atmospheric stability at higher altitudes, generating conditions favorable for cloud top entrainment and cloud droplet coalescence. Such radiatively driven cloud droplet coalescence process is relatively stronger in thicker clouds to counter relatively weaker microphysical effect, resulting the increase of cloud droplet size with the increase of aerosol loading; and vice-versa in thinner clouds. Overall, the study suggests the prevalence of both negative and positive relationships between cloud droplet size and aerosol loading in highly polluted regions.

<title>Abstract</title>Low-level cloud plays a key role in modulating air–sea interaction processes and sea surface temperature (SST) variability. The present study investigated the evolution process of oceanic low-level cloud cover (LCC) and related air–sea interaction processes on an intraseasonal time scale in the summertime (June–October) North Pacific (30°–40°N, 165°–175°E) based on satellite observational and reanalysis datasets from 2003 to 2016. The intraseasonal time scale (20–100 days) is dominant not only for the LCC, but also for LCC controlling factors, that is, SST, estimated inversion strength (EIS), and horizontal temperature advection (Tadv). To reveal the lead–lag relationship among these variables, we conducted phase composite analysis with a bandpass filter based on the intraseasonal variability (ISV) of LCC. It suggests that ISV of LCC leads to that of SST and that horizontal dry–cold advection from the poleward region leads to increasing LCC and decreasing SST. The increasing LCC corresponds to a positive relative humidity (RH) anomaly in the lower troposphere, which is due to adiabatic cooling with shallow convection, vertical moisture advection, and meridional RH advection associated with the anomalous cold Tadv. Heat budget analysis of the ocean mixed layer suggests the importance of anomalous dry–cold advection for cooling SST, not only via enhanced latent heat release but also via decreased downward shortwave radiation at the sea surface according to cloud radiative effect with a positive LCC anomaly. Determining the detailed lead–lag relationship between LCC and its controlling factor is a good approach to understand mechanisms of the local processes of both low-level cloud evolution and air–sea interaction.

    More details Close

Whole-sky images taken during April 2012 at Sendai, Japan by a sky camera with a fish-eye lens were used to validate cloud fractions derived from data obtained by the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) onboard the Terra satellite. We developed an algorithm to estimate the cloud fractions from the sky camera JPEG data with 8-bit low color depth, and applied this algorithm to have the cloudiness as seen from the ground. The existence of cirrus, thin clouds, and broken clouds yielded large ambiguities in a comparison between these cloud fractions. How wide a view of the whole-sky image taken at an observatory is suitable for the validation of the MODIS cloud fractions was also examined, and the results indicate that cloud homogeneities strongly affect the size of the area in which the cloud fractions given as an indicator at the site. The cloud fractions from the MODIS with average radii of 0.04° (about 3km), 0.08° (≈6km), 0.2° (≈15km), 0.3° (≈20km), and 0.4° (≈30km) around the site were compared with the image-based cloud fractions at the site. Consequently, the cloud fractions observed at the site had values that were generally closer to the average of the MODIS cloud fractions with a radius of 0.08° (about 6km). Throughout this study, we assumed that the subsidiary whole-sky pictures taken at adjacent sites encircling the main observatory at a radius of about 5 ~ 7km would be very helpful for more accurately validating the cloud fractions derived from satellite observations.

Observations of cloud liquid water path, columnar water vapor amount, and downward flux of infrared radiation in the Arctic region Inuvik, Canada and Kiruna, Sweden, during winter were carried out with a microwave radiometer and a pyrgeometer. The algorithm used in this study for the retrieval of liquid water path and columnar water vapor amount from measured intensity of microwave radiation requires the atmospheric temperature profile and the cloud temperature, which were obtained from radiosonde measurements. It was shown from microwave radiometer measurements that the columnar water vapor amount changed between 1-13kgm^<-2> during about a month in both observation points, and supercooled liquid water existed on several days. At Inuvik liquid water path reached about 0.25kgm^<-2> at most; this is comparable to a typical value of summer clouds in mid-latitude. It was also shown that the downward flux of infrared radiation on the ground surface changed between 130 Wm^2&acd;300Wm^<-2>. Finally, the downward flux of infrared radiation was calculated using the liquid water path retrieved from the microwave radiometer and water vapor and temperature profiles obtained from radiosonde observations. A comparison between the calculated and the measured values shows that both are in good agreement and the downward flux of infrared radiation in the Arctic region is primarily dependent on the water vapor amounts and temperature profile.

  100. Land cover classification over the Yellow River domain using satellite data

Yellow River Studies News Letter = Yellow River Studies News Letter (4) 15-26 2005/04/01

Publisher: Research Institute for Humanity and Nature(RIHN)

    More details Close

Land cover classification is implemented in the East Asian region using 250 m MODIS land surface reflectance product in combination with MODIS snow cover product and OLS human settlements product. This classification map is used as one of the input data of hydrological model applied to the Yellow River in China. The classification method is based on the decision tree classification by means of 11 kinds of land surface features derived from time series of two MODIS products and OLS data in 2000. The province based comparison of classification result with Chinese digital land cover map shows the good agreements in forest, agricultural field, grassland and barren categories. Another comparison with Chinese census resulte in the slight overestimations in forest and agricultural field. Agricultural sub-categories as paddy, dry field, and irrigated field shows relatively low agreements in both comparisons.

The WANTS (Water vapor, Aerosol and Nuclei Transportation and Snow crystals) Arctic Experiment was carried out in Inuvik, NWT, Arctic Canada during the mid-winter of 1995/96. Many organizations participated in this research program. A vertical pointing Doppler radar, and microwave radiometer were set up on the roof of the Inuvik Science Research Center, and precipitation and aerosol particle observations by microscope, replica method and filter method were also conducted on the ground surface. Valuable and successive data over 40 days were obtained in the Arctic mid-winter. Two different major vapor routes were classified by synoptic weather analysis. One route was from the Gulf of Alaska across the mountainous region near the west coast of the North American Continent. The other was from the Arctic Ocean or Northern Alaska directly. Precipitation features between them were quite different. In the former the warm air mass was intruded aloft, a convective radar echo was observed and a high amount of liquid water was observed by microwave radiometer. Densely rimed dendrites, small graupel particles, needles and supercooled liquid water droplets were observed on the ground surface. The precipitation intensity was strong, however, the precipitation period was short. The latter was a windy and cold air mass, the radar echo was stratiform and the liquid water path was very small as observed by microwave radiometer. The crystal shapes of combination of bullets, columns and crossed plates type were observed. The precipitation intensity was characterized by weak intensity and long period.

The changes of the shape, composition, surface coating and optical properties of haze and dust particles which originated from the inland urban and desert areas in the Asian continent and dispersed widely within the continent and down to Kyushu areas were quantitatively studied. As dispersing within the continent, the scattering coefficient of the particles substantially increased while the absorption coefficients decreased a little. In contrast, the particles being transported to the western coast of Kyushu usually turned into aggregated shapes in core-shell structures with thick liquid coatings, and their ability of absorbing and backscattering solar radiation energy increased during the trans-boundary movement. By the comparison of the particles observed in the continent and at the western coast of Kyushu, the increases were quantitatively evaluated and the mechanisms responsible for the increases were addressed.

A comprehensive analysis was performed using various satellite observation data, reanalysis data, ship observation data, and Argo float observation data. In addition, the simulation of the relationship between sea surface temperature and clouds was performed using the regional meteorological model WRF. As a result, it was shown that the low clouds in the summer North Pacific, which have been analyzed from relatively simple viewpoints such as sea surface temperature and atmospheric stability, have different fine structures in the western and central regions. In the western part of the North Pacific Ocean, the Kuroshio and Kuroshio Extension are dominant, and cloud fluctuations have little effect on the sea. On the other hand, in the central part of the North Pacific Ocean, it is suggested that the ocean mixing layer is shallow and the sea surface temperature affects the clouds, but the fluctuation of the clouds also influences the ocean mixing layer.

In order to capture the spatial and temporal variations of the upper clouds, which play important roles in determining the radiation balance of the earth, we have developed methods to retrieve the upper cloud properties from the satellite data. Variations of cloud amount and optical and microphysical properties were investigated. In the tropics, distribution of the optically thick upper cloud is well associated with areas of high convective activity. The distribution of the cirrus cloud spreads to the higher latitudes than that of the convective cloud, and the cirrus cloud distribution also fluctuated corresponding to the seasonal cycle of the convective activity. The interannual variation of the upper cloud is closely related to the ENSO. In addition, we developed a cloud analysis algorithm using the Himawari-8 data, and it became possible to capture the temporal variation of clouds with frequent observation of the Himawari-8.

A relationship between micro and macro physical properties of cloud and heat flux at the sea surface was studied by using satellite observation data, ship-borne observation data, surface observation data, and numerical simulation with a cloud-resolving model. The results show that condensation process is dominant in the growth of cloud droplet over the area where heat flux at the sea surface is large, while collision process is important for the droplet growth in the other area. It was shown from the space-borne lidar and cloud-radar that overlapping clouds suppress the underlying low level cloud development.

The cloud is one of the most important factors controlling the Earth's climate change. The low level cloud has a large reflectance and is affected by anthropogenic aerosols, that is, the indirect effect. However, the basic properties of low cloud is not sufficiently investigated. The intent of the present study is to investigate the mechanism of diurnal variation of low cloud microphysical properties. We used satellite data such as GOES and NOAA/AVHRR. The stratiform low clouds off the coast of California were investigated by using GOES data. The reflection property of the cloud was used to estimate optical thickness and effective particle radius of cloud. It is found that cloud optical thickness decreased from morning to afternoon while effective particle radius increased during the same period and then decreased. The variation of optical thickness may ascribed to heating due to absorption of solar radiation. On the other hand, effective particle radius might change as a result of condensation, evaporation, coagulation, and gravitational fall out. It should be noted that the properties observed here is limited to cloud top because we used the reflected solar radiation in visible and near infrared spectral region. In addition, NOAA/AVHRR data were used. The NOAA is polar orbital satellite, but diurnal variation can be observed because the orbit of NOAA satellite drifts and then equator overpass time slightly delay. It is also shown from the analysis of NOAA/AVHRR data that effective particle radius of low cloud decreased from noon to evening. This is consistent with the result obtained from the above GOES data analysis and ground based measurements with microwave radiometer and pyranometer carried out by other research group. There are several different mechanisms of cloud forming, maintaining and disappearing, so that we need further studies involving satellite remote sensing, ground based observation, and meso-scale modeling with cloud microphysical processes.

In the present study, the comparison and analysis of surface shortwave irradiance over China were carried out by using pyranometer data, satellite-derived data, and parameterized data with meteorological factors. The new quality control method was developed to check the pyranometer data obtained for the past several decades. The application of the quality control method showed that the pyranometer data used in this study, which were obtained by the Chinese Meteorological Administration, were reliable for long-term trend analysis. The comparison of the pyranometer data with the satellite-derived data such as ISCCP-FD and GEWEX-SRB indicated systematic bias particularly in the urban and desert areas. It is suggested from radiative transfer calculations that the bias is ascribed to aerosols in the satellite-derived data even under the cloudy sky conditions. The surface shortwave irradiance pyranometer data analysis suggested a decreasing trend for the period 1960-1990. The decreasing trend may be ascribed to changes in optical thickness of aerosols and that of clouds while the cloud amount was decreasing in this period. It is also suggested that the surface shortwave irradiance appears to change from decrease to increase around 1990. It is consistent with the previous studies for the North America and Europe, that is, so-called "global dimming and brightening" phenomena. The study on this matter will be more important in the future climate studies.

(2)これらの過程をアジア域において観測するために、UNEP/ABC、JAXA/SKYNET、NASA/AERONET、GEWEX/BSRN等を組み合わせることが有効である。

It is well known that the Norwegian Sea region is very important to understand the energy and water vapor transformation in the northern hemisphere because the Norwegian Sea does not freeze in the midwinter seasons. Therefore, the baroclinic zone is formed among a warm air-mass which is originated in the mid-latitude and a cold air-mass which is originated in a high latitude region. Under such conditions, the polar lows are generated around the zone frequently. To investigate the structures, activity and precipitation phenomena of the atmospheric disturbances, the X-band vertically pointing Doppler radar of the Graduate School of Science, Hokkaido University was set up at the Bear Island (Bjornoya) Weather Observatory in Norway (74°30′N, 19°01′E). Continuous observations had been conducted through three years from September 2001 to August 2004. The radar observations in this region is the first time till the present. To estimate the spatial distribution of precipitation intensity from the radar data obtained, the relationship between radar reflectivity (Z) and precipitation intensity (R), and precipitation intensity (R) and falling velocity of precipitation particles (V_p) were investigated. As a result, the actual circumstances of the precipitation intensity and water contents over the Norwegian Sea region were clarified. Furthermore, the radar data which was obtained at Ny-Alesund station (78°55′N, 20°25′E) in the Svalbard, Norway, of National Institute of Polar Research of Japan, was analyzed. As a result, the radar echoes showed distinct seasonal variations with respect to height, and clarified into four patterns. The observations of snow crystals and aerosol particles were conducted through four winter seasons at the Arctic Research Center, Sodankyla, Finland, and a number of interesting results were obtained. The densification phenomena and compressive viscosity of the depth of snow cover at the Arctic regions were investigated and compared with the temperate regions.

In the present study, ground based measurements of cloud were carried out to evaluate the accuracy of satellite remote sensing of cloud microphysics and radiative properties. Comparisons among the ground based measurements, aircraft measurement data obtained in the past, and satellite remote sensing were also performed. Radiaitve properties of inhomogeneous cloud were simulated with Monte Carlo method to evaluate the retrieval of loud microphysical properties such as optical thickness and effective particle radius. Application of satellite remote sensing to GCM was also discussed. It is suggested that optical thickness and effective particle radius retrieved from satellite remote sensing are consistent with those measured in situ by aircraft. Accuracy of remote sensing of inhomogeneous cloud is worse than that of homogeneous cloud because of roughening and smoothing effects, which are dependent on the geometrical relationship between the sun and satellite. Statistical approach in the comparison of observed results obtained by different methods is quite effective particularly for the large size of data, and it is applicable to parameterization of cloud in GCM.

In this project, various aspects of atmosphere-land interaction have been investigated. As the one-dimensional study, observed fluxes are compared with fluxes given by several models. As there exists biases in the observation, definite conclusion cannot be obtained. It may be difficult that this kind of comparison gives us a definite conclusion to the GCM. As the meso-scale model study, diurnal variation of precipitation over the Bankok has been investigated by using the 2-dimensional non-hydrostatic model. It is concluded that the midnight maximum of precipitation over the Bankok. is due to the eastward propagation of a squal line excited over the mountain slope westward to the Bankok. This study shows it is important to consider a detailed orography in the Monsoon Asia. For 3 dimensional GCM, 1998 Asian Monsoon was simulated and flux differences due to model horizontal resolutions were examined. With respect to monthly mean fluxes over the large domain (500km x 500km), these differences are small except for the southern part of the Himalaya mountain. It is concluded that only large-scale mountain can exert an influence to fluxes in the range of T42 and T106.

In order to investigate the water circulation, structures of weather systems, and clouds and precipitation formation mechanism in the Arctic region, ground based observations were carried out using remote sensing instruments in the Scandinavian Arctic region and over the Norwegian Sea. An X-band vertical pointing Doppler radar was installed at Kiruna, Sweden and collected the data for 4 months from January to April in 1999. It was found that precipitation was strongly affected with the topography of the Scandinavian mountains. To understand the water circulation in this area, it is necessary to understand of the interaction between the topography and weather systems. Meteorological observations were also carried out from October 1999 at Bear Island in the central Norwegian Sea and Ny-Alesund, Spitsbergen. These data set would contribute to understand weather systems and water and energy circulation in the Arctic region.

The following successful results have been attained after the three year effort of the project : 1. Aerosol product : The world's first global distribution of aerosol size index was retrieved. Middle latitude industrial aerosols and a tropical belt of biomass burning aerosols were found. 2. Cloud product : Unique global distributions of cloud microphysical parameters were obtained. It is found that the cloud particle radius systematically decreases around large continents. 3. Through the products (1) and (2), the strength of cloud-aerosol interaction phenomenon on global average was obtained for the first time. This result is extremely useful for better modeling the cloud-aerosol phenomenon. 4. Surface energy budget product : The surface radiative energy budget was estimated from the GMS satellite for every one hour. Such a product showed better performance than the ISCCP (International Satellite Cloud Climatology Project) products. 5. Better understanding of energy flow, especially relationship between diabatic energy flow and atmospheric structure, was obtained. It is found that an estimation of poleward energy transportation from NCEP objective analysis data and ERBE satellite data is better than that of 80's, but still not sufficient for accurate evaluation of the surface radiative energy flux. It is also found that the long-term energy transport by low frequency and high frequency eddies vary complementarily contributing to the middle latitude winter dynamical field. 6. Satellite data archive : CCSR (Center for Climate System Research, the University of Tokyo) and CeRES (Center for Environmental Remote Sensing, the Chiba university) have constructed ten year scale satellite data bases of GMS, AVHRR, SSM/I etc.. The database can be used in the network environment. 7. Future heritage : Several young promising scientists and students have been raised for performing further development of the subjects in this study.

The WANTS-ARCTIC : Sweden Experiments (1997/1998) were carried out from December 14,1997 to January 20,1998 at the Swedish Space Physics Institute, Kiruna, Sweden. An X-band vertical pointing Doppler radar, Laser ceilometer, Microwave radiometer, Pyranometer, Aerosol sampling and Mesonet station were set up at the institute. Snow crystals were also observed using a polarization microscpoe and a replica solution method on the ground surface. During the obsevation period, as a whole, it was a relatively warm in this winter season in Scandinavia area. It was warm and calm in December and cold and stormy in January. We had a couple of snow storms in the middle of January. We could, therefore observe various types of snow crystals. For instance, there were a weak and steady snowfall which was effected by mountains and a heavy snowfall with deep radar echoes when a low pressure system was approaching from the Norwegian Sea. Throughout the observation, the radar system collected the data more than 600 hours. It was clarified using the microwave radiometer that the water vapor contents integrated vertically were 0.4,0.7 and 1.0cm in the fair weather, during snowfalls and falling graupel particles, respectively. And, the liguid water contents recorded 0.01 and 0.04cm in the falling of rimed crystals and graupel particles, respectively. Their values changed largely depending on the types of disturbances. Microphotographs using a polarization microscope were taken more than 3000 frames and 500 slide glasses were used to collecting snow crystals. These data were analyzing energetically now.

    (1) NOAA/AVHRR LAC data sets were purchased and analyzed for retrieving cloud and aerosol microphysical parameters. We have developed an algorithm for getting cloud optical thickness and effective particle radius by making use of AVHRR channel 1,3 and 4 radiances. We also developed an algorithm for retrieving aerosol optical characteristics from AVHRR channel 1 and 2 and GMS band 1. (2) We have found examples of cloud modifications over areas such as the western coastal region of the North American Continent, the Amazon area, the Yellow Sea area, and the western coastal region of the African Continent. General characteristics for the modifications are that the clouds in the continental air mass have large liquid water path and small effective particle radius ; the clouds in the maritime air mass have small liquid water path and large effective particle radius. (3) The effect of the obtained cloud modification on climate has been estimated by a simple energy budget model. We found a cloud system which has drizzle particles can cool the climate system effectively. (4) We have developed an accurate yet efficient radiation code which can treat scattering/absorption/emission processes by clouds and aerosols as well as absorption/emission by gaseous constituents. This code has been successfully implemented into our numerical climate model. (5) In order to improve our description and prediction ability of radiative convective equilibrium states, the thermal convection theory of Boussinesq fluid is reconsidered aiming at constructing a basic theory for radiative convection which should replace the current theory basically developed for Benard convection. The focus is placed on examine the difference in the appearance of circulation structures caused by thermal conditions imposed to the system. Numerical calculations of two dimensional fluid show that the wavenumber one circulation structure and asymmetry of upward and downward motions, which are the characteristics considered generic to the moist convection, widely appear in the convection driven by internal cooling in general. Those features are also recognized in the calculations of three dimensional spherical convection.

Climate changes of both natural and anthropogenic origins are now important issues not only in scientific community but in public because of their great(potential)impacts on human life and industry. For this reason an international cooperative research program "World Climate Research Program(WCRP)" is now going on. Japanese climate science community has been participating in this international endeavor through individual projects carried out by group of scientists organized by the sponsorship of Japanese funding agencies. In order to conduct these national research projects in a coherent manner with international ones it is necessary for representative scientists to communicate with international groups by participating in Working Groups and Science Steering Groups of the WCRP. The present project is organized to keep such an interface between Japanese and international groups.
