    To design functional materials based on composite materials, it is imperative for us to understand the mechanism of adhesion between different materials such as metal and polymer. In this study, we investigated the adhesion between NiCr alloy film with three different compositions (Ni100, Ni90Cr10, Ni60Cr40) and polyimide film using surface forces apparatus combined with optical microscope, which enable the observation of contact area during the measurement of the adhesion. This composite is widely used in the electronic devices as substrates, wiring, etc. The adhesion force measured in air for Ni90Cr10 and Ni60Cr40 decreased by time while that for Ni100 remained constant. In the measurement under nitrogen gas atmosphere, the order of strength became Ni60Cr40>Ni90Cr10>Ni100, and the decrement in adhesion for Ni90Cr10 and Ni60Cr40 was reduced. These results indicated that the Cr has stronger interaction with polyimide compared to Ni, and enhance the adhesion with polyimide. This was also supported by the larger hysteresis in the contact area vs normal load for Ni60Cr40 and Ni90Cr10 surfaces. However, Cr can be oxidized easily by exposure to air, which resulted in the decrease in the adhesion.

    This article reviews applications of surface forces measurement for characterizing interactions of molecular assemblies with overview given in Table 1. Measurement techniques using a surface force apparatus and a colloidal probe atomic force microscope described in a concise manner, and the results of detailed researches on functionalized surfactant assemblies are presented. 1) Surface forces measurement provided evidence for spontaneous vesicle formation of an ammonium surfactant with an acetate counterion. 2) The mechanism of fusion and aggregation of surfactant vesicles in the presence of salt (NaCl) was clarified. 3) Interactions between bilayers of various biological phospholipids were found to be attractive van der Waals and repulsive steric hydration forces in pure water and monovalent salt solutions. 4) Hydrogen-bonding interactions between glycine head groups were directly demonstrated. 5) Interactions between LB films of metal-chelating lipids ; pH dependence reflected different protonation states of iminodiacetic acid groups, and Cu2+ complexation with them. 6) The effects of surfactant on the particle - bubble interactions between hydrophilic and hydrophobic silica particles and an air bubble were examined.

    This article reviews recent advances in the surface forces measurements with an overview given in a table Measurements using a surface forces apparatus and an atomic force microscope are explained in a concise manner, and detailed researches on soft comlex systems are described. 1) The elastic compressibility modulus of polyelectrolyte (ionized poly (glutamic acid)) brush layers was determined by analysing the steric repulsion of the surface forces. Abrupt change in the modules was found at a critical density, which was accounted for in terms of the transition in the counterion binding to polyelectrolytes. 2) Two-dimensionally organized protein layers was prepared utilizing LB films which could bind His-tag (poly (histidine) tagged) proteins through specific interaction between metal-chelating lipids and poly (histidine) stretches via Cu (II) ions. An atomic force microscope was employed to measure the forces between these protein monolayers. 3) Nanorheological behavior of liquid crystal thin films was studied by a shear forces apparatus. Resonance curves of the mechanical system were monitored with changing film thickness and normal load. The rheological as well as tribological parameter, local viscosity and friction coefficient, were obtained from the amplitude and the phase of response signals around the resonance frequencies.

    This review illustrates applications of the surface forces measurement for characterizing interactions of surfactant assemblies. The measurement provided new insights into dispersion properties of surfactants at the molecular level. Phenomena discussed include: (1) spontaneous vesicle formation upon changing counterions of an ammonium surfactant from bromide to acetate; (2) the cloud point of nonionic (polyoxyethylene) surfactant micelles; (3) salt (NaCl) induced fusion and aggregation of vesicles containing the ammonium or the phosphate group as a hydrophilic part; (4) an unusually long-range attraction (>200 nm) between hydrophobic surfaces. The forces measurement was employed also to study the adsorption of polyions. The obtained force profiles revealed that polystyrene sulfonate adsorbed onto the ammonium monolayers at 1:1 stoichiometry in a flat configuration. Another new study used polyelectrolyte-functionalized surfactants to prepare brush layers of polyelectrolytes. The brush layer structures of polyelectrolytes such as poly (glutamic acid) were inferred from the analysis of the steric components of the force profiles. The analysis permitted the determination of the elastic compressibility modulus of an oriented, single polymer brush layer in a solvent.

    Monolayers at the air-water interface provide unique environments for molecular recognition. New host-guest systems utilizing such monolayers have been developed recently. Effective binding of water-soluble substrates by the hydrogen bonding interaction were found for monolayers functionalized at their hydrophilic groups with diaminotriadine, urea, orotate, Kemp's acid, guanidinium and resorcinol groups. These monolayers bind polar substances such as nucleobases, nitrogen aromatics, amino acids, AMP, ATP and sugars from aqueous subphases. Their association constants, in the range of 102-103 M-1, are comparable to those reported for similar systems in aprotic solvents. It is contrasting with a generally held view that the interaction in simple organic receptors is surppressed in the aqueous microenvironment, and should be brought out from unique properties of monolayer surfaces. Characteristics of molecular recognition at two dimensionally arranged monolayer surfaces are discussed.

    Characterization of the solid-liquid interfaces at the molecular level has recently become possible. This review summarizes our recent studies including new observations of liquid adsorption and a novel measurement for characterizing confined liquids. We have found that molecules with the hydrogen-bonding groups such as alcohol and acid form the molecular macroclusters when they are adsorbed on the silica surface in nonpolar solvents. This is caused by hydrogen-bonding between the surface silanol groups and adsorbed molecules as well as between these molecules. We also have developed a resonance shear measurement technique using the surface force apparatus which can control the thickness of the confined liquids at a resolution of 0.1 nm. These studies provide understandings of interfacial phenomena of the molecular level, which are not only important as foundations of interface science but useful for designing nano-and micro-devices and processes for manufacturing nano-materials.

    This article reviews applications of surface forces measurement for characterizing interactions of molecular assemblies with overview given in Table 1. Measurement techniques using a surface force apparatus and a colloidal probe atomic force microscope described in a concise manner, and the results of detailed researches on functionalized surfactant assemblies are presented. 1) Surface forces measurement provided evidence for spontaneous vesicle formation of an ammonium surfactant with an acetate counterion. 2) The mechanism of fusion and aggregation of surfactant vesicles in the presence of salt (NaCl) was clarified. 3) Interactions between bilayers of various biological phospholipids were found to be attractive van der Waals and repulsive steric hydration forces in pure water and monovalent salt solutions. 4) Hydrogen-bonding interactions between glycine head groups were directly demonstrated. 5) Interactions between LB films of metal-chelating lipids ; pH dependence reflected different protonation states of iminodiacetic acid groups, and Cu2+ complexation with them. 6) The effects of surfactant on the particle - bubble interactions between hydrophilic and hydrophobic silica particles and an air bubble were examined.
