Aims and objectives: Masked priming lexical decision research involving relatively high-proficient Japanese–English bilinguals suggests that past-tense and present-tense morphological connections (e.g., fell-FALL and looked-LOOK) are represented in their L2 (English) lexicons in a way that is similar to how they are represented in L1 (English) lexicons. The goal of the present research was to determine whether the same is true for low-proficient Japanese–English bilinguals. Methodology: Seventy-seven low-proficient Japanese–English bilinguals were tested in the masked priming lexical decision task. We manipulated the morphological or orthographic similarity between L2 English prime-target pairs. Data and analysis: We analyzed response latencies and error rates using (generalized) linear mixed-effects models. Findings: Although participants responded significantly faster to targets preceded by past-tense primes (e.g., fell-FALL and looked-LOOK) when compared to unrelated primes (e.g., slow-FALL and danger-LOOK), those priming effects were the same size as priming effects produced by orthographically similar primes (e.g., fill-FALL and lonely-LOOK), suggesting that the facilitation from past-tense primes is likely orthographic in nature. Nevertheless, the low-proficient bilinguals showed significant L2-L2 repetition priming (e.g., fall-FALL and look-LOOK), suggesting that, for those individuals, L2 (English) words are at least represented at the lexical level. Originality: The present study empirically confirmed a prediction, derived from a post hoc exploratory analysis in our previous research, that masked morphological priming effects are no larger than orthographic priming effects in low-proficient bilinguals. This indicates that a certain level of functional proficiency is required to observe morphological priming effects for Japanese–English bilinguals. Implications: Our results suggest that morphological connections in L2 are not yet established for low-proficient bilinguals, even when L2 words are lexically represented in their mental lexicon.

In attempting to understand mental processes, it is important to use a task that appropriately reflects the underlying processes being investigated. Recently, Verdonschot and Kinoshita (Memory & Cognition, 46, 410-425, 2018) proposed that a variant of the Stroop task-the "phonological Stroop task"-might be a suitable tool for investigating speech production. The major advantage of this task is that the task is apparently not affected by the orthographic properties of the stimuli, unlike other, commonly used, tasks (e.g., associative-cuing and word-reading tasks). The viability of this proposal was examined in the present experiments by manipulating the script types of Japanese distractors. For Romaji distractors (e.g., "kushi"), color-naming responses were faster when the initial phoneme was shared between the color name and the distractor than when the initial phonemes were different, thereby showing a phoneme-based phonological Stroop effect (Experiment 1). In contrast, no such effect was observed when the same distractors were presented in Katakana (e.g., "くし"), replicating Verdonschot and Kinoshita's original results (Experiment 2). A phoneme-based effect was again found when the Katakana distractors used in Verdonschot and Kinoshita's original study were transcribed and presented in Romaji (Experiment 3). Because the observation of a phonemic effect directly depended on the orthographic properties of the distractor stimuli, we conclude that the phonological Stroop task is also susceptible to orthographic influences.

We aimed to develop a semantic network analysis method based on natural language analysis and to elucidate the effects of brain damage and aging on the network structure. First, quantitative semantic structures of animal words were obtained from LDA analyses of Japanese and Norwegian Wikipedia. Second, we developed a visualization method to interpret the performance of Japanese and Norwegian subjects in a verbal fluency task based on their semantic structures. Furthermore, we found a strong relationship between word production interval and semantic association in both populations. Finally, we quantified the effects of aging, brain damage, and cognitive decline on semantic structure change through a patient study.

In this research project, we demonstrated that the script types of Japanese word distractors (kana vs. romaji) modulated the results in the color-naming Stroop task. In addition, we also found that, when learning novel Japanese words, the data patterns in picture naming tasks using those novel words changed depending on the script types (kanji vs. kana). These results indicate that phonological and orthographic processing systems are interacting with each other.

The present study aimed to reveal the underlying mechanism how bodily movements influence cognitive processing of written language by using young and elderly healthy individuals and brain damaged patients. The series of experiments consistently showed that kusho behavior positively affected cognitive task performance (Kanji construction task) only when the visual feedback of the finger movements was available. In addition, we showed a positive correlation between the task performance and vocabulary score only in the condition that target stimuli were presented for 3 seconds. Further, we confirmed that the facilitation effects of kusho behavior for the elderly individuals and a patient with a parietal lobe lesion. These results together supported the hypothesis that the visual aspects of kusho behavior assist cognitive processing regardless of the general cognitive ability.

In order to address the issue of whether Japanese kana and kanji words are read differently, I attempted to examine 1) whether automatic phonological activation arises for kana and kanji words, 2) whether different semantic activation routes are used for kana and kanji words, and 3) whether the nature of phonological-orthographic (P-O) relationships is different for kana and kanji words. The results suggested that, for both kana and kanji words, 1) automatic phonological activation arises early in processing and 2) semantic activation arises directly from orthography when the orthographic forms are familiar, whereas semantic activation arises via phonology when the orthographic forms are unfamiliar. When the P-O relationships and the effect of P-O consistency were examined, however, the difference did emerge for kana versus kanji words. These results indicate that P-O consistency must be taken into account when considering the processing difference for kana and kanji words.
