Novel calcium phosphate cements (CPCs) that can be resorbed into the human body need to be developed. One approach for improving bioresorbability is reducing the content of calcium phosphate in CPCs; however, this may induces difficulties in setting the cement and increases the risk of decay. Adding bioresorbable polymers to a liquid solution can shorten the setting time and inhibit decay during setting. A novel bioresorbable polymer, phosphorylated pullulan (PPL), was recently reported. The effect of adding PPL to α-tricalcium phosphate (α-TCP)-based CPCs was examined and compared to that of adding bioresorbable polymers such as collagen, chitosan, and alginate. Collagen did not significantly inhibit the conversion of α-TCP to hydroxyapatite (HA), and its combination with calcium phosphate decreased the setting time and suppressed decay; chitosan decreased the setting time when combined with calcium phosphate; and alginate inhibited the conversion of α-TCP to HA and contributed to suppressing the decay. In contrast, PPL slightly inhibited the conversion of α-TCP to HA; however, its combination with calcium phosphate decreased the setting time. Thus, selecting bioresorbable polymers can help effectively control the properties of CPCs.

<title>Abstract</title>Among the CaCO3 polymorphs, aragonite demonstrates a better performance as a filler material in the paper and plastic industries. Despite being ideal from the environmental protection perspective, the production of aragonite particles via CO2 mineralization of rocks is hindered by the difficulty in achieving high production efficiencies and purities, which, however, can be mitigated by exploiting the potential ability of chelating agents on metal ions extraction and carbonation controlling. Herein, chelating agent N,N-dicarboxymethyl glutamic acid (GLDA) was used to enhance the extraction of Ca from calcium silicate and facilitate the production of aragonite particles during the subsequent Ca carbonation. CO2 mineralization was promoted in the presence of 0.01–0.1 M GLDA at ≤ 80 °C, with the maximal CaCO3 production efficiency reached 308 g/kg of calcium silicate in 60 min using 0.03 M GLDA, which is 15.5 times higher than that without GLDA. In addition, GLDA showed excellent effects on promoting aragonite precipitation, e.g., the content of aragonite was only 5.1% in the absence of GLDA at 50 °C, whereas highly pure (&gt; 90%, increased by a factor of 18) and morphologically uniform aragonite was obtained using ≥ 0.05 M GLDA under identical conditions. Aragonite particle morphologies could also be controlled by varying the GLDA concentration and carbonation temperature. This study proposed a carbon-negative aragonite production method, demonstrated the possibility of enhanced and controlled aragonite particle production during the CO2 mineralization of calcium silicates in the presence of chelating agents.

<title>Abstract</title>Octacalcium phosphate (OCP; Ca8(HPO4)2(PO4)4 ∙ 5H2O) is a precursor of hydroxyapatite found in human bones and teeth, and is among the inorganic substances critical for hard tissue formation and regeneration in the human body. OCP has a layered structure and can incorporate carboxylate ions into its interlayers. However, studies involving the incorporation of tetracarboxylic and multivalent (pentavalent and above) carboxylic acids into OCP have not yet been reported. In this study, we investigate the incorporation of pyromellitic acid (1,2,4,5-benzenetetracarboxylic acid), a type of tetracarboxylic acid, into OCP. We established that pyromellitate ions could be incorporated into OCP by a wet chemical method using an acetate buffer solution containing pyromellitic acid. The derived OCP showed a brilliant blue emission under UV light owing to the incorporated pyromellitate ions. Incorporation of a carboxylic acid into OCP imparted new functions, which could enable the development of novel functional materials for biomedical applications.

Hydroxyapatite (HA) ceramics are used as artificial bones and adsorbents. The properties of HA particles are dependent on their morphology and composition. To reveal the effects of these factors, tailored HA particles are required. In the present study, HA particles with a controlled morphology and composition were prepared using the hydrothermal treatment of α- or β-tricalcium phosphate (α- or β-TCP) particles in an acidic or basic solutions at 120−240 °C. Plate-like HA particles were obtained when α-TCP was treated with the acidic solution. Rod-like HA particles were obtained when α-TCP was treated with the basic solution or when β-TCP was treated with the acidic solution. Rice-like HA particles were obtained when β-TCP was treated with the basic solution. The HA particles that were obtained under these conditions had a calcium-deficient composition, and the Ca/P molar ratio approached the stoichiometric value when the treatment temperature was increased. The morphology and composition of HA particles were controlled by selecting the starting materials and hydrothermal conditions.

Carbonate-containing hydroxyapatite (CHA) particles were synthesized by the hydrothermal treatment of calcium carbonates with phosphate-containing solutions. The influence of synthesis conditions in the hydrothermal synthesis of CHA from calcium carbonate on the morphology and composition has been investigated. Morphological changes in CHA particles were observed depending on the crystal phase and size of starting materials and the pH of solutions. The character of the starting material and pH of the treatment solution were highly important factors to control the morphology and composition of the synthesized CHA.

For the development of effective utilization techniques for sugi (Cryptomeria Japonica) resources, as a novel reaction medium, superheated steam was used to extract organic substances from sugi leaves in a pressure range below saturated vapor pressure at 100~200°C. The yield with superheated steam at 170°C was about five times as high as that obtained at 100°C, and the yield also increased as extraction time and steam pressure increased. Steam with higher temperature and higher pressure contributed to enhancing the oil yield and extracting more high-molecular-weight compounds such as sesquiterpenes and diterpenes. In addition, to examine the effectiveness of the extracts obtained by superheated steam, their antimicrobial activities against 18 soil microorganisms were examined using the disk-diffusion method. Extracts obtained by superheated steam exhibited significant antimicrobial activity, especially against fungi and actinomycetes. The analysis of the chemical compositions of the extracts by GC-MS and GC-FID suggested that one or more of the monoterpenes and sesquiterpenes were the substances that were potentially responsible for such antimicrobial activity. Superheated steam exhibited some advantages in selectively extracting active antifungal ingredients from natural materials.

Abstract Industrial and anthropogenic activities release heavy metals (HMs) from natural resources, transforming them into toxic elements. HMs can be extremely toxic, even at very low concentrations; their bioaccumulative nature damages ecosystem endurance and human health. Bacterial bioremediation of HMs is an effective, sustainable, and reliable method owing to inherent and adaptive systems of bacteria that facilitate significant HMs removal via adsorption, ion exchange, and bioaccumulation. However, the use of free cells in wastewater treatment compromises bioremediation efficiency. Bacterial immobilization emerges as a promising visionary technique for treating HMs-contaminated wastewater. Therefore, the present review elucidates the potential of various bacterial remediation mechanisms and highlights current research outcomes in the field of metal ion bioremediation. Furthermore, this review explores the importance and potential applications of bacterial immobilization in the context of metal ion bioremediation. A comprehensive literature review was conducted to demonstrate the advantages of immobilized bacterial cells in HM-contaminated wastewater treatment. The groundbreaking relationship between bacterial HM removal mechanisms and immobilization methods has been conclusively established. Future research that integrates bacterial HM removal mechanisms and bacterial immobilization methods could play an instrumental role in the effective treatment strategies and efficient recovery of HMs from wastewater.

We prepared the titanium plates with titanium oxide layer on their surface by various oxidation treatments for the creation of the scaffolds that can control the attachment and detachment of microorganisms. By anodizing the titanium plate, it was possible to form a highly hydrophilic and rough titanium oxide layer. This anodized sample had higher adhesion to yeast than the unoxidized sample. When the yeast attached to the surface-oxidized titanium plate was irradiated with UV, the metabolic activity of the yeast decreased and the photocatalytic activity of titanium oxide was expressed. On the other hand, it was found that the yeast expressing the molybdenum-binding protein loaded on the porous ceramic could also recover molybdenum.

For a critical bone defect, as for two phases of bone reconstruction method (the Masquelet method) proposed by A.C.Masquelet, a good result is provided in clinical practice. However, there were few reports about the biological activity of the bone defect region of clinical practice, in spite of some basic researches about induced membrane. Therefore we evaluated bone defect region environment of the rat critical bone defect model. As a result, in the stroma of the bone defect region of the Masquelet method, the inflammatory granulation tissue and foreign body granuloma formation by the inflammation were controlled by induced membrane. Furthermore, promotion of the osteoclast induction by cytokine leads to bone metabolism activated. It was suggested that the environment of the bone defect region of the Masquelet method was advantageous to subsequently new bone formation.

We tried to show importance of osteoclasts for bone regeneration in the region implanted with bone substitutes and osteoblast progenitor cells. We implanted granules of biodegradable bone substitute, beta tricalcium phosphate (β-TCP) in rat subcutaneous tissue with or without bone marrow mesenchymal cells, which include osteoblast progenitor cells. Implantation of bone marrow mesenchymal cells induced not only osteogenesis, but also osteoclastogenesis. Osteoclastogenesis stimulated resorption of β-TCP. These results showed that implantation of bone marrow mesenchymal cells stimulated replacement of bone substitute to the bone. In addition, we found that hydroxyapatite composed of rod shaped particles induced osteoclast-like multinucleated giant cells without implantation of bone marrow mesenchymal cells. Furthermore, we showed divergence of multinucleated giant cells induced around hydroxyapatite granules implanted in the rat subcutaneous tissue.

We implanted granules of beta-tricalcium phosphate composed of rod-shaped particles in bone defects of ovariectomized rats. In the region, bone defects were regenerated with much amount of bone with physiological trabecular structures. Molecules involved in interferon signaling pathways were thought to induce the normal bone healing. We also found that hydroxyapatite composed of rod-shaped particles had strong interaction with vitamin D binding protein. Macrophage activating factor, an active form of vitamin D binding protein, possessed potent stimulatory effect for osteoclastogenesis and this molecule was thought to induce potent osteoconductivity of hydroxyapatite composed of rod-shaped particles.

We aimed the preparation of bioresorbable bone-repairing materials which promote bone regeneration. We prepared silicate-containing tricalcium phosphate (TCP) and revealed that the sintered silicate-containing TCP showed higher apatite-forming ability in a simulated body fluid than the silicate-free TCP. When the compact of silicate-containingTCP powder was hydrothermally treated, the Ca-deficient HA ceramic composed of rod-shaped particles was obtained. On the other hand, we revealed that the dissolution rate of the Ca-deficient in the acidic buffer solution increased with the Ca-deficiency degree. We established the synthesis process and evaluated the basic materials.

A fabrication process of Ca-deficient HA with controlled composition and morphology of the particles which construct the HA ceramics was established by selecting the starting material and hydrothermal conditions. The possibility that the Ca-deficient composition and morphology of the particles affect the behavior of the HA ceramics in vivo was revealed. Moreover, it was revealed that the rod-shaped particles prevent the brittle fracture. From these results, we obtained the basic knowledge about the creation of bioresorbable bone substitute materials.

A material which shows both bone-bonding ability, i.e. bioactivity, and mechanical properties similar to those of human bone is desired to be developed. In the present study, organic-inorganic hybrids were prepared through organic modification of Si-OH group and Ca^<2+>, and the factors that govern their microstructures, bioactivity and mechanical properties were fundamentally investigated, in order to fabricate a novel bone-repairing material. A type of organic-inorganic hybrids were prepared through modification of 2-hydroxyethylmethacrylate(HEMA), which gives hydrophilic polymer, with 3-methacryloxypropyltrimethoxysilane(MPS)and calcium chloride(CaCl_2), which give silanol groups and calcium ions, respectively. The bioactivity of the obtained hybrids was able to be controlled by the content of CaCl_2 or the addition of catalysts in the synthesis procedure. In this system, some of the obtained hybrids showed Young's modulus and strain at failure similar to those of human articular cartilage. On the basis of these findings, silanol groups and calcium ions were introduced to various organic polymers and their bioactivity was examined. It was found that we can induce bioactivity on the poly(methylmethacrylate) bone cement which is clinically used, if methylmethacrylate was modified with MPS and water-soluble calcium salts we revealed that bioactivity can be induce d on various organic polymers by modification with silanol groups and calcium ions, and the bioactivity and mechanical *erties of the resultant hybrids can be controlled by the kinds of polymer, the way of addition of calcium ions, synthesis conditions and so on.
