    A two-dimensional resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (2D-RIXS) microscopy system has been developed at beamline BL02U of NanoTerasu. The instrument combines a Wolter type-I mirror for spatial imaging with a varied-line-spacing grating spectrometer, simultaneously achieving micrometre-scale spatial resolution and ultrahigh energy resolution in the soft X-ray regime. Test chart measurements confirm a vertical spatial resolution of 1.0 µm near the field-of-view center, and the horizontal resolution determined by the incident beam footprint is 0.8 µm. RIXS imaging capabilities have been demonstrated by the measurements of a patterned NanoTerasu logo and exfoliated NiPS 3 nanoflakes, highlighting its efficiency in locating specific microscale regions within inhomogeneous samples. These results establish 2D-RIXS microscopy as a position-sensitive probe of elementary excitations in quantum materials and functional devices.

    X-ray magnetic circular dichroism provides a means to identify ferromagnetic, chiral, and altermagnetic orders via their time-reversal-symmetry ( T ) breaking. However, the symmetry properties that govern circular dichroism (CD) in resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) remain poorly understood. We show that, due to the inherent irreversibility of the RIXS process, RIXS-CD does not require T breaking to be present, but reflects the change in unitary symmetries associated with magnetic ordering. Using the altermagnetic MnTe as a model system, we observe an azimuthal-angle dependent RIXS-CD signal in the magnon excitations. Our findings highlight the sensitivity of RIXS-CD to the relativistic symmetry in magnetic systems and its potential application as a probe of magnetic domains.

    Abstract The unconventional superconductor Sr2RuO4 has long served as a benchmark for theories of correlated-electron materials. The determination of the superconducting pairing mechanism requires detailed experimental information on collective bosonic excitations as potential mediators of Cooper pairing. We have used Ru L3-edge resonant inelastic x-ray scattering to obtain comprehensive maps of the electronic excitations of Sr2RuO4 over the entire Brillouin zone. We observe multiple branches of dispersive spin and orbital excitations associated with distinctly different energy scales. The spin and orbital dynamical response functions calculated within the dynamical mean-field theory are in excellent agreement with the experimental data. Our results highlight the Hund metal nature of Sr2RuO4 and provide key information for the understanding of its unconventional superconductivity.

    <title>Abstract</title><italic>α</italic>-RuCl3 is a major candidate for the realization of the Kitaev quantum spin liquid, but its zigzag antiferromagnetic order at low temperatures indicates deviations from the Kitaev model. We have quantified the spin Hamiltonian of <italic>α</italic>-RuCl3 by a resonant inelastic x-ray scattering study at the Ru <italic>L</italic>3 absorption edge. In the paramagnetic state, the quasi-elastic intensity of magnetic excitations has a broad maximum around the zone center without any local maxima at the zigzag magnetic Bragg wavevectors. This finding implies that the zigzag order is fragile and readily destabilized by competing ferromagnetic correlations. The classical ground state of the experimentally determined Hamiltonian is actually ferromagnetic. The zigzag state is stabilized by quantum fluctuations, leaving ferromagnetism – along with the Kitaev spin liquid – as energetically proximate metastable states. The three closely competing states and their collective excitations hold the key to the theoretical understanding of the unusual properties of <italic>α</italic>-RuCl3 in magnetic fields.

    The IRIXS Spectrograph represents a new design of an ultra-high-resolution resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS) spectrometer that operates at the Ru <italic>L</italic> 3-edge (2840 eV). First proposed in the field of hard X-rays by Shvyd'ko [(2015), <italic>Phys. Rev. A</italic>, <bold>91</bold>, 053817], the X-ray spectrograph uses a combination of laterally graded multilayer mirrors and collimating/dispersing Ge(111) crystals optics in a novel spectral imaging approach to overcome the energy resolution limitation of a traditional Rowland-type spectrometer [Gretarsson <italic>et al.</italic> (2020), <italic>J. Synchrotron Rad.</italic> <bold>27</bold>, 538–544]. In combination with a dispersionless nested four-bounce high-resolution monochromator design that utilizes Si(111) and Al2O3(110) crystals, an overall energy resolution better than 35 meV full width at half-maximum has been achieved at the Ru <italic>L</italic> 3-edge, in excellent agreement with ray-tracing simulations.

    Abstract The determination of the symmetry of the energy gap is crucial for research on the microscopic mechanisms of unconventional superconductivity. Here, we demonstrate experimentally that high-resolution resonant inelastic X-ray scattering at the Cu L3 edge can serve as a momentum-resolved, bulk-sensitive probe of the superconducting gap. We studied two optimally doped cuprates Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+δ and Bi2Sr2Ca2Cu3O10+δ, in which we observe a strongly momentum dependent reduction of the spectral weight upon entering the superconducting state, with a maximum for momenta connecting antinodal regions of the Fermi surface. Based on a comparison with the calculated charge susceptibility and electronic Raman scattering data, we interpret our observation as a renormalization of the non-local charge susceptibility due to the superconducting gap opening. Our data demonstrate the methodological potential of resonant inelastic X-ray scattering as a versatile probe of the energy gap of high-temperature superconductors, including buried interfaces in heterostructures which are inaccessible to angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy.

    Abstract Incommensurate charge order (CO) has been identified as the leading competitor of high-temperature superconductivity in all major families of layered copper oxides, but the perplexing variety of CO states in different cuprates has confounded investigations of its impact on the transport and thermodynamic properties. The three-dimensional (3D) CO observed in YBa2Cu3O6+x in high magnetic fields is of particular interest, because quantum transport measurements have revealed detailed information about the corresponding Fermi surface. Here we use resonant X-ray scattering to demonstrate 3D-CO in underdoped YBa2Cu3O6+x films grown epitaxially on SrTiO3 in the absence of magnetic fields. The resonance profiles indicate that Cu sites in the charge-reservoir layers participate in the CO state, and thus efficiently transmit CO correlations between adjacent CuO2 bilayer units. The results offer fresh perspectives for experiments elucidating the influence of 3D-CO on the electronic properties of cuprates without the need to apply high magnetic fields.

    半導体の電荷自由度の操作を利用した既存のエレクトロニクスに磁性体のスピン自由度の操作を融合した新しいエレクトロニクスは、スピンエレクトロニクス(スピントロニクス)と呼ばれ、全く新しいデバイスの開発が期待されている。半導体に磁性原子をわずかにドープした希薄磁性半導体は、半導体と磁性体の両方の性質を示す物質で、スピントロニクスの中核を担う材料として期待されている。強磁性発現の起源として、離れて点在する磁性イオンの局在磁気モーメントが、半導体中を走り回る遍歴キャリアとの交換相互作用を通じて結合することで強磁性が発現するキャリア誘起強磁性が提唱され、より転移温度の高い物質の開発に向け精力的な研究がなされている。代表的な物質として、Ga1-xMnxAsや室温を超えるキュリー温度(Tc)を持つTiCoO2などが知られ、制御性の向上に努力が注がれている。しかしながら、GaMnAs等の既存物質では、Mnの化学的溶解度が低いこと、Mnドーピングにより磁性元素とホールを同時に導入するため、キャリア数と磁性元素量を独立に変化させることができないことなどが大きな問題となってきた。 近年、122型鉄砒素系高温超伝導体と等しい結晶構造を持つ新規希薄磁性半導体Ba1-yKy(Zn1-xMnx)2As2が合成された。本系は高いTc=220 Kを持つことに加えて、BaサイトをKで置換することでホールを注入し、磁性元素MnはZnサイトに導入するため、両者を独立に制御できる。 本研究では、本希薄磁性半導体の電子構造及び磁気構造を角度分解光電子分光、X線磁気円二色性、及び共鳴非弾性軟X線散乱の方法を用いて調べた。
